Route du Rhum
Delayed Route du Rhum start will be rewarded by favourable conditions but early dynamic decisions will hold the key to winning

A record sized armada of 138 solo skippers set to race in six different classes should be blessed with brisk but very manageable wind and sea conditions when the 12th Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe starts Wednesday at 1415hrs off Saint Malo. After waiting for the start rescheduled from Sunday lunchtime due to a big storm which blew through Monday, the reward seems set to be W'ly winds of between 13 and 15kts with a bumpy, choppy sea made difficult by the residual swell of between 1 and 1.5m. There should be some breaks in the cloud maybe with some sunny interludes.

From the start line to the Cape Frehel gate it will be almost dead upwind. With the massive fleet starting off the same line, maximum concentration and anticipation will be required. After the gate the objective is to get out of the Channel as efficiently and safely as possible, avoiding the no-go areas such as a large wind-farm to the SW of the main westwards course. As they progress towards the tip of Brittany the seas will build to 3 to 4.5 metres. By the end of Wednesday evening the fastest Ultim 32/23s should already be into the Atlantic in a lifting breeze.

Thereafter the strategic choices are fairly open. The first decision is whether to go south or north of the Ushant traffic separation scheme. As usual the option to head west and north will encounter the toughest conditions through a front set to lie between the Azores and Ireland. The conservative option is going south across the Bay of Biscay, increasingly for the fast foiling boats like the newer IMOCAs and the Multi 50s it is the optimum sea state rather than wind strength which will affect the routing.

Tomorrow morning (Wednesday) the Rhum Multi category will be the first to leave the dock from 0620hrs, followed an hour later by the Rhum Mono and the final three Rhum Multi boats. Finally, the Class40 monohulls will go through the locks at 0820 and 0920hrs. The whole fleet will then remain at sea until the start at 1415hrs.

You can follow the tracker on the website with updates every five minutes until 5 miles west of Cape Frehel, then every 15 minutes until midnight. After that, the tracker will be updated every hour until they near Guadeloupe.

There is a live English feed of the start on the website and on the social networks

English rookie Harayda ready to rhumble
At 24 years old the British rookie James Harayda is the youngest skipper in the IMOCA class. He is setting off on his first major ocean race armed with a well founded, strong and reliable 2007 Finot Conq design which was previously Stephane le Diraison's A Time for Oceans and an ample supply of confidence

After two seasons sailing double-handed with Dee Caffari on a SunFast 3300, collecting the British national two handed title along the way and benefiting from Caffari's decades of deep ocean experience, Harayda is doing all he can to fast track his way to the 2024 Vendee Globe.

Since he acquired his boat in the spring Harayda has sailed nearly 5000 miles including his Route du Rhum qualifier, "I'm not feeling a huge amount of pressure at the moment. I'm looking at it more as a learning experience." He says, " These are useful qualifying miles for me. I'm feeling very comfortable with the boat now and have got my head around most of it. I'm trying to get to the next level in terms of performance, which is something I'm working on. I've been fortunate to go out and do a lot of sailing this season. The Route du Rhum qualifier was the first time I'd been out on the boat by myself. I had a knee injury before that and there was the refit of the boat. I had 25 knots gusting to low thirties for several days, so I feel good with the boat."

2023 Aegean 600 Race
AEGEAN 600 The relationship of the Greeks with the sea has been measured for millennia. Since ancient times, with their small sailboats or rowing boats, they were bold seafarers and explorers. In modern times, our sailing athletes are amongst the world's leading and compete in international events in Olympic classes as well as inshore and offshore regattas.

The Aegean Sea, known from philosophy, literature and fine arts to all civilized world, is one of the most beautiful sailing venues for racing and leisure sailing. The Hellenic Offshore Racing Club, a yacht club with extensive experience in organizing international events, decided to give sailors the opportunity to take part in a 600 nm non-stop race. AEGEAN 600 is a race with many challenges as the participants will need to come "face-to-face" with the famous Aegean Northern winds while, at the same time, enjoy the beauties of the Aegean islands.

As a member of the International Olympic Committee, president of the Hellenic Olympic Committee and a former Olympic athlete, I would like to invite sailors to take part in the "AEGEAN 600", wish them to enjoy the sailing race as well as the parallel onshore events planned by the organizing committee, always taking into consideration the principles and values of Greek hospitality.

Spyros Kapralos
President Hellenic Olympic Committee

The 2023 edition of the Aegean 600 takes place 7-15 July. For information on how to register, marina and accomodation details, contact us at or call (+30) 210411 3201

Ireland's Women On Water Are Doing Fine - It's The Men Who Need Help
Anyone with a basic knowledge of the development of sailing in Ireland - particularly from 1890 onwards - will be aware that women sailors played an active role afloat in this country's sailing boat sport for a long time. For how could it be otherwise in an island nation which produced the great sea queen Granuaille? Admittedly, most of the ancient organisations in sailing appeared to have a sometimes totally male dominance in their membership requirements and general administration. But nevertheless, a significant element in the more forward-thinking sectors in the sport provided women with an at least equal role, even if some of the dinosaurs on the male side liked to think that their gender - and they themselves in particular - were the all-powerful hubs of the universe.

Recent national developments in sailing regarding female participation are frankly bewildering for anyone with the slightest knowledge of the everyday history of our sport.

Thus It looks to us as though today's maritime-minded women of Ireland are getting a very raw deal. They're being treated as some sort of inferior species that can't even think of going near a boat without the support of various well-meaning initiatives, of which the apparently well-resourced and doubtless well-meaning Women-on-Water movement is the most conspicuous.

Yet it seems to exist on the hypothesis that our sailing women, or would-be sailing women, are delicate flowers who need to be nurtured, cosseted and encouraged in every way possible in order to get them into a boat. And to add further insult, its existence suggests that those many women sailors from throughout Ireland who have already made it to the top on their own abilities over many decades are some sort of freaks.

Latest 18ft Skiff For The Rag & Famish Hotel
The original Rag & Famish Hotel skiff in 1996. Photo by Frank Quealey. Click on image for photo gallery.

Rag & Famish The latest in a line of Rag & Famish Hotel 18ft skiffs, dating back to 1996, was launched in the rigging area alongside the Australian 18 Footers League clubhouse in Double Bay on Sunday October 30 and continues the unbroken, highly successful 26-year association between the hotel and the club.

The North Sydney hotel and the iconic Australian 18 footers, both go back to the 19th Century, but still remain prominent features of Sydney and both have a strong family tradition, particularly since the late George Calligeros purchased 'The Rag' in May 1975.

Since George's passing, the hotel has continued to develop the strong family values through Peter and Anna Calligeros, who continue to run the business under the Calligeros Hotel group.

The continuation of the association with the club is a great tribute to the memory of George Calligeros.

During the early years of sponsorship, George Calligeros was a regular in the Double Bay Park rigging area, speaking with his crew, then following the team as an on-the-water supporter, from the cockpit of 'Bonito', where he would sit, with a beer in hand, watching his crew go around the track and screaming at the top of his lungs "Go The Rag".

One problem for George was eyesight and he was concerned that he couldn't always see where his boat was on the track. A problem he solved when The Rag started carrying a bright fluro-yellow spinnaker, which could be seen all over Sydney Harbour in the 1999-2000 season.

Fortunately, George got to see his dream of winning a JJ Giltinan world Championship before he passed away in 2005, but his memory is still large at each JJs regatta when the George Calligeros Memorial trophy is presented to the winning team of Race 1 in the championship. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.
