Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe records ready to tumble
With the time and date now set for the start of the 12th Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe on Wednesday 9th November at 1415hrs, it looks like being a fast race. After a rather tricky start, the models suggest that the fastest classes will be able to take advantage of favourable conditions allowing them to make fast miles on a course close to the Great Circle Route. Although finishing first is the aim of the competitors, smashing the race record would be the icing on the cake.

7 days, 14 hours, 21 minutes and 47 seconds
That is the outright record for the Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe set in 2018 by Francis Joyon aboard IDEC Sport, a trimaran launched in 2006. Since then, there has been a lot of progress made to the Ultim 32/23 boats. On paper, Joyon's record could be smashed, if the weather patterns allow that, which may well be the case looking at what lies ahead after the start on Wednesday 9th November.

Less than six days for the first Ultim 32/23 boats?
Alongside Franck Cammas, Morgan Lagraviere is part of the weather unit working with Charles Caudrelier (Maxi Edmond de Rothschild). "If we had set off on Sunday, chances were slim of beating the record, as the very heavy weather would have impacted the way we managed the boat and her speed. There were a lot of uncertainties about the first few days of the race," explained Morgan. "With the start postponed until Wednesday, the situation has changed considerably. Today, both weather models we use (CEP and GFS) agree. When we launch routing plans, we come up with some very interesting race times for an Ultim 32/23, beating the record and possibly finishing in less than six days. Finishing in less than a week and achieving such a record would be a bonus."

Christian Dumard, who has helped Francis Joyon (IDEC Sport) in particular with his routing, also imagines a fast race. "Its not going to be that brilliant at the start with a front to cross and some heavy seas, but this is after all the start to the Route du Rhum," he explained. "After that, it should be very fast for all the different classes and particularly for the Ultim 32/23 multihulls. If they don't break, we are looking at six days or even five and a half."

Astronaut Christens Sam Davies' New Boat
The French astronaut, Thomas Pesquet and French news reader, Nathalie Renoux christened the British sailor's new IMOCA, Initiatives-Cœur, which was launched on 30th July.

French actor François Damiens and the winner of the 1990 Vendée Globe, Titouan Lamazou were also present. Pesquet and Renoux did not however smash the usual bottle of champagne. It was a young child saved by the Chirurgie Cardiaque charity, Dibi, who smashed a balloon full of water on the boat.

Race to Hawaii - Transpac
Transpac The classic and legendary Transpac Race is a challenge in three stages with an epic ride downwind to the finish line

For more than a century the lure of sailing to paradise has inspired thousands of offshore sailors to take on the 2225-mile challenge of racing to Hawaii. Since 1906 the Los Angeles to Honolulu Transpacific Yacht Race (more commonly known as Transpac) has been organised by the Transpacific Yacht Club to give offshore sailors the opportunity to realise this dream.

The 52nd edition of this classic ocean race will have its first starting gun fired on 27 June 2023. On this date and two successive dates - 29 June and 1 July - waves of monohulls and multihulls will set off from the start, off Los Angeles' Point Fermin. From here they will sail upwind 26 miles west to clear the first mark of the course at the west end of Catalina Island with the next mark being the finish line buoy off Honolulu's famous volcanic crater at Diamond Head - 2,200 miles to the southwest.

Legends of The Ocean Race invited to celebrate in Genova, Italy
Genova, host of the Grand Finale of the next edition of The Ocean Race, will see a distinguished line-up of race legends descend on the iconic Italian port to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the race. All boats and sailors who have previously competed in the race are invited to participate in the Legends festivities.

The Legends regatta will be part of the host city activities during the finish to the 14th edition of The Ocean Race at the end of June 2023.

Born as the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1973 and continuing as the Volvo Ocean Race from 2001 through 2018, The Ocean Race has become the reference fully-crewed around-the-world race in the sport of sailing.

For the past fifty years, the race has been a proving ground for the best sailors, yacht designers and builders in the sport, creating five decades of icons and legends.

The Legends event is among a suite of activities Genova will activate as the Official Destination Marketing Partner of The Ocean Race, in addition to its role as host city of The Grand Finale, the finishing leg of 14th edition of The Ocean Race.

Cup Spy What happened in the Cup - November 4/5, 2022:

Luna Rossa stayed ashore on Saturday.

American Magic sailed the AC75 off Pensacola, again with Tom Slingsby on the helm and cyclors back in operation. Moderate to fresh winds made a refreshing appearance in Pensacola, Fl.

INEOS Britannia are yet to sail their newly launched LEQ12 from Mallorca

Alinghi Red Bull Racing sailed their AC75 from Barcelona - only sailed for an hour - but it was quality time.

Emirates Team New Zealand did not sail - it was Saturday in NZ, and the team do not usually sail on weekends..

Both Swiss and US America's Cup teams had good days on November 4 (American Magic) and November 5 (Alinghi Red Bull Racing). American Magic got a moderate to fresh breeze and began turning in numbers that would have been very competitive in Auckland 2021. The Swiss were on their 27th Day out of the shed, and are in their first real block of testing with a focus on getting the most out of their new clew sheeted mainsail. After an initial period of light winds, they got going with some sustained foiling bursts to round out a good, if not a long day.

Jangada Wins 2022 RORC Yacht Of The Year
The 2022 RORC Season's Points Championship featured 16 offshore races held in nine different countries. The exciting programme included: the Rolex Middle Sea Race, the RORC Transatlantic Race, the RORC Caribbean 600, the SSE Renewables Round Ireland Yacht Race, the inaugural Roschier Baltic Sea Race, and the Sevenstar Round Britain & Ireland Race.

For 10 months, over 400 boats and 5000 sailors raced an astounding variety of offshore certified keelboats. Ranked under the IRC Rating Rule, jointly administered by the RORC and the UNCL, competition was thrilling and close, right through the classes. The RORC Season's Points Championship also awards prizes to Multihulls and Class40s.

Winning the RORC Season's Points Championship is an achievement desired by any serious offshore sailor. The Overall winner of the 2022 championship, lifting the Jazz Trophy was Richard Palmer's JPK 1010 Jangada, which was raced Two-Handed with two co-skippers during the season; Jeremy Waitt and Rupert Holmes.

Jangada completed 12 races, accumulating a massive haul of points for overall victory. But perhaps the best indicator of Jangada's performance was that the team was victorious in two classes, IRC Two-Handed and IRC Three, where the winner is decided by the best five races in the series. Jangada was also the winner of a new trophy; The Gordon Applebey Trophy for the best six races in IRC Overall.

In IRC Three with 71 entries, Jangada narrowly beat Sun Fast 3200 Cora, raced by Tim Goodhew & Kelvin Matthews. Cora's impressive season was rewarded with The Assuage Trophy. Mike Yate's J/109 JAGO was third. In IRC Two-Handed with 99 teams, runner-up to Jangada was Cora and third was Sun Fast 3300 Chilli Pepper, raced by Jim & Ellie Driver.
