Plattners’ Phoenix keep the pressure on

52 Super Series Barcelona Sailing Week After a challenging three race day at the 52 Super Series Barcelona Sailing Week which saw the Tina Plattner steered South African flagged Phoenix score a third, first and a second while the American Quantum Racing netted 14pts, Doug DeVos’ world champions crew have seen their lead on the season standings now cut to only three slender points by title rivals Phoenix with only two days of the season left.

Phoenix’s top-drawer consistency in the very light, streaky breezes is all the more impressive considering Tina Plattner has not been able to sail at all for more than two years because of acute back pain problems and just returned to racing this week.

But over a long, tough, mentally exhausting day under acute pressure she retained both her cool and her trademark laser focus, keeping Phoenix fast to allow afterguard Tom Slingsby, Cameron Dunn and navigator Shane Elliot to work their particular alchemy.

52 Super Series Barcelona Sailing Week Provisional Standings:
1. Platoon (GER), Harm Müller-Spreer, 4+2+5+1 = 12 pts
2. Alegre (GBR), Andy Soriano, 2+5+2+3 = 12 pts
3. Phoenix (RSA), Hasso & Tina Plattner, 7+3+1+2 = 13 pts
4. Quantum Racing (USA), Doug DeVos, 1+4+4+6 = 15 pts
5. Provezza (TUR), Ergin Imre, 3+1+7+5 = 16 pts
6. Sled (USA), Takashi Okura, 5+6+6+4 = 21 pts
7. Vayu (THA), Whitcraft Family, 8+10+3+8 = 29 pts
8. Interlodge (USA), Austin & Gwen Fragomen, 6+7+8+9 = 30 pts
9. Gladiator (GBR), Tony Langley, 9+9+9+7 = 34 pts
10. Paprec (FRA), Jean-Luc Petithuguenin, 10+8+10+10 = 38 pts

Young French Show Their Seniors The Way
A change of wind direction and race course format produced a change of fortunes on day four of the 470 World Championship in Sdot Yam, Israel. Race victories went to two teams that have been well outside of the top 10 but who seized their opportunity when it came along.

After the first race of the day, yesterday’s stand-out team, Camille Lecointre & Jeremie Mion (FRA) briefly moved into the overall lead thanks to a 4th place finish. The Germans in the yellow bibs faltered with a 15th place, but in the next race the tables were turned. Luise Wanser & Philipp Autenrieth (GER) rallied with a 2nd place while Lecointre & Mion slipped to 23rd. So Germany retain the yellow bibs yet again, while it’s the young French up to 2nd overall and the older French down to 3rd. Not that Lecointre was concerned. “Plenty to play for, we are in the battle,” she smiled.

Only a point away from the podium are Jordi Xammar & Nora Brugman (ESP) whose 2nd place started to make them a threat for the overall lead, but whose subsequent 18th place dropped the Spaniards down again. It was a typically inconsistent set of scores that most teams could relate to, the yellow bibs included.

Friday’s two scheduled races will conclude gold fleet competition, after which the top 10 will go forward to the double-points medal race on Saturday. First start on Friday is set for 1300 hours. For live tracking and live broadcast of the racing, go here -- Andy Rice

Results - Top 3 Overall (after seven races)
1. Luise Wanser & Philipp Autenrieth (GER), 38 points
2. Matisse Pacaud & Lucie de Gennes (FRA), 45 points
3. Camille Lecointre & Jeremie Mion (FRA), 50 points

Nations Trophy
France has overtaken Germany in the 470 Nations Trophy ranking after day four.
Germany was leading since day one, but now the battle is still on as only one place separates the two nations. Spain is in third with Great Britain and Italy in close range.

Dock talk is cheap and broken dreams are very expensive. When you need to replicate actual working loads, HarkenLab provides a solution. When grand prix yachts gather in port it's an opportunity for skippers and owners to check out the latest innovations on their rivals' boats, and for crews to compare notes on how well the new stuff actually works.

Fresh look
The better the instrumentation the more important the quality of the inputs upon which the system depends... which is why the engineers at A+T decided it was time to turn their attention to the once humble wind sensor.

Unstoppable force
While Class40 design moves forward apace parallel improvements in materials and build techniques are adding a further layer to the relentless improvements in sailing performance and reliability that we are seeing.

How so?
Bigger yachts, greater loads, fewer crew yet easier sailing. One reason that in 2022 such a bizarre and seemingly conflicting combination of features is possible can simply be described as 'Reckmann'

Not long to wait
Next year's Rolex Fastnet Race will be the last edition before the 'big one'... when the 100th Anniversary event starts off Cowes in 2025, so a good time to look back at the journey to date

The Famous Project
The Famous ProjeCt, launched by Alexia Barrier aims to enter the first all female crew into the Jules Verne Trophy, the fastest round the world non stop sailing race.

There are two phases. Phase One: acquiring a multicoque and training and phase Two: none other than setting the record for the Jules Verne Trophy in 2025.

It was at 00:32:38 UTC on Tuesday, that the MOD70 Mana, skippered by Alexia Barrier and her mixed crew composed of Riccardo Pavoncelli the current owner, Jonny Malbon, Paul Larsen, Tom Dawson, Jeff Mearing, Evan Walker and Kai Weeks crossed the finishing line of the Rolex Middle Race first to win their category.

October 22nd saw the start of the Rolex Middle Sea in the Grand Harbour of Valette in Malta. The competitors embarked on the 606 nautical miles race around Sicily and the Pelagie Islands before returning to Malta. 120 competitors were on the starting line of which 8 multicoques, amongst which the MOD70 Mana. This race enabled Alexia to launch her training phase of The Famous Project aboard the MOD70 Mana (ex-Spindrift) which is in the process of being acquired and which will serve as the training boat for the next two years. A fine promising start!

“The project is officially launched and I am honoured to have skippered this boat surrounded by such talented sailors including Paul Larsen and Jonny Malbon. This was the first step and next time, the female crew will all be by my side” explains Alexia

Thanks to the “Palatine Women Project”, the trimaran Mana, proudly navigating under the colors of the Alice Milliat foundation, welcomed aboard more than 80 women business leaders and journalists.

It was alongside Brian Thompson and Jonny Malbon that Alexia Barrier, skipper and founder of The Famous Project and Marie Tabarly, crew member of the project, that the guests were able to discover our ambitious project and its training equipment! Elodie-Jane Mettraux and Dee Caffari, both members of the 100% female crew for the world record attempt of the Jules Verne Trophy in 2025, were also part of the occasion during the speed tests in the Bay of Saint Tropez.

The Alice Milliat foundation is the first European foundation favouring women sports.

INEOS Britannia reveal new ‘T6’ test boat

INEOS Britannia The British America’s Cup team, INEOS Britannia, today launched their first test boat for the 37th America’s Cup code-named T6, designed and built-in collaboration with Mercedes-AMG F1 Applied Science, a division of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team.

The 40-foot test boat will play a vital role in the team’s programme through to the next America’s Cup, to be raced in Barcelona in the summer 2024. T6’s work will commence with an extensive testing period, primarily aimed at validating the team’s design tools and testing key componentry ahead of the design deadline to start the build of the team's race boat.

T6 was built at Carrington Boats in Hythe, at the same site where the original ‘Empire’ Flying Boats were built back in 1937. The new age flying boat was then transported to Brackley, UK, the home of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team for its fit out. T6 has been a key to bringing together the two teams, defining common working practices between the worlds of America’s Cup and F1.

T6 will operate throughout the winter from the team’s new base in Palma de Mallorca. Live test data and results will be streamed back to the design, engineering and performance teams at the team’s UK headquarters in Brackley, where work is already underway on the research and design of what will become the team’s AC75 race boat, competeing for the 37th America’s Cup.

Rudder Cup Cancelled
Melbourne, Australia: The ORCV Race Committee made the difficult decision to cancel this weekend's Melbourne to Devonport race as a matter of safety due to the forecast of gales and 3-5-metre waves in Bass Strait for the race and days following, making returning to Melbourne difficult. We know there’s been a lot of planning and preparation by skippers and crews for this race.

For the boats entered in this year's Melbourne to Hobart race, please see the NTC5 for your options for how to complete your qualifying passage. We invite your boat to join the West Offshore Products Coast Sprint Race 2 starting on December 3rd at 9:45am. After the race your boat will be able to continue sailing to complete a non-stop 24 hour passage as a qualifying passage. Note a detailed log of the passage is to be kept and submitted.

Please have a look at your crew lists for Safety and Sea Certifications. We have a few places available in the Safety & Sea Survival certifications course on November 20 and would prefer the remaining places go to those doing Hobart. Please note for compliance it's an ORCV requirement that 50% of crew, including the skipper for fully crewed boats and 100% when sailing double handed are Safety & Sea Survival certified.

The office will be in contact with skippers regarding refund or crediting of boat entry fee. For those that did order crew shirts, these have will be distributed to your club prior to the weekend.
