Britannia Rules The Waves But France Wins The Day
Day three of the 470 World Championship in Sdot Yam, Israel, marked the start of gold fleet competition. As a national effort, two different teams from Great Britain each won a race but for individual effort the best day went to Camille Lecointre & Jérémie Mion (FRA) who finished behind the Brits but scored a remarkable two second places.

No one else could come close to the French level of consistency, with this new pairing growing stronger by the day. At the end of the first day of the Worlds the French were in 24th place. By the end of day two, up to 10th place. This evening their two 2nds lift them to 2nd overall on the leaderboard, an incredible comeback from a difficult start.

Currently the top 10 shows an even distribution of female/ male and male/ female combinations in the new era of Mixed 470 competition. The experiment seems to be working.

For the continuation of gold fleet racing on Thursday, first start time has been set for 1400 hours. -- Andy Rice

Results - Top 3 Overall (after seven races)
1. Luise Wanser & Philipp Autenrieth (GER), 21 points
2. Camille Lecointre & Jérémie Mion (FRA), 27 points
3. Jordi Xammar & Nora Brugman (ESP), 37 points

Melges 24 European Championship
Genoa, Italy: On the second day of the 2022 Melges 24 European Championship when Strambapapà (ITA, 4-15) confirms himself as a leader of the provisional ranking, the Croatian crews came to occupy four of the top ten places, demonstrating extreme confidence sailing on fast one-design of Melges 24, of which the Croatian fleet has reached significant numbers during last a couple of seasons.

In fact, during the Race Five Michele Paoletti's crew wasn't performing so bright than in the previous ones, but despite the fifteen place obtained, it was still able to defend the lead in the ranking, followed by Andrea Racchelli's Altea (ITA, 8-12), seven points behind, and Ante Botica's Mataran 24 (CRO, 1-4): boat of the day, top performer of the Corinthian division and a new holder of the third place of the overall ranking.

The Melges 24 European Championship will resume tomorrow at 9am to take advantage of the morning gusts of the northerly breeze: thanks to this, the fleet will sail on a different racecourse, positioned in front of the Lanterna, the world famous lighthouse of Genoa.

Aegean 600 Race

Rolex Middle Sea Race Overall Winner
At 1600 CEST on Wednesday, 26 October, the winner of the 43rd edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race was announced as Eric de Turckheim's French NMYD 54 Teasing Machine.

The Royal Malta Yacht Club has confirmed that none of the remaining yachts still racing is able to better Teasing Machine's corrected time under IRC.

"It is a huge emotion winning the Rolex Middle Sea Race," said de Turckheim. "It is our first 600 (nm) race overall, after making several podiums around the world. On top of that, it is certainly our favourite 600nm race because of the complexity of the course, the complexity of the winds."

"I have a passion for the 600nm races," he continued. "It's like running a marathon. It's a mixture of being competitive 24 hours after 24 hours, and having the resistance and the teamwork. It was our seventh race and experience counts a lot."

Teasing Machine Crew: Eric de Turckheim, Laurent Pages, Christian Ponthieu, Quentin Le Nabour, Tony Brochet, Gabriele Olivo, Betrand Castelnerac, Paco Lepoutre, Aleandre Degrival, Jerome Teillet, Quentin Bouchacourt

The Royal Ocean Racing Club Vice Commodore, Eric de Turckheim is a force to be recokoned with in any offshore race. Teasing Machine's record at the Rolex Middle Sea Race was already exceptional before this overall win. A class winner and third overall in 2017, on the NMYD 54's debut, was followed up with second in class in 2019, third in class in 2020, and second in class in 2021. Teasing Machine is the fourth French yacht to have won the Rolex Middle Sea Race following in the footsteps of Antares (1981), Spirit of Ad Hoc (2008) and Courrier Recommandé (2018).

Fresh look - A&T Instruments
A&T Instruments The better the instrumentation the more important the quality of the inputs upon which the system depends... which is why the engineers at A+T decided it was time to turn their attention to the once humble wind sensor

It does not need stressing that fully accurate and fast wind measurement is critical to all aspects of a racing yacht's performance and equally important for the ever more complex sail systems on superyachts. Many companies have looked at novel ways of measuring wind including acoustics, but the spinning cup for speed and the vane for apparent wind angle are still the most accurate and reliable method. The A+T 500 series is a new design that moves this technology forward. It's in full production and provides compatible upgrade parts for the large installed base of existing B&G systems even dating back to the 1980s.

The main attributes of a "perfect" wind sensor include resolution, accuracy and fastest possible response time. Dynamic response is particularly important if masthead motion is compensated which is crucial both for raceboats and, with ever taller masts, superyachts.

No Racing Today - The Season End Looms Closer
Although the ten boat fleet went afloat for most of the afternoon and a race course was set up, in the end there was not enough wind off the Barcelona waterfront today for competition to take place at the 52 SUPER SERIES Barcelona Sailing Week.

As the five regatta season nears its conclusion scheduled for Saturday it was an especially frustrating situation for the crews who need races and good results to improve their standings.

The forecast looks better for the final days and Principal Race Officer Maria Torrijo has set a three race schedule for Thursday in order to try and catch up on lost races after only one race could be sailed on the opening day of the regatta, Tuesday.

The IMOCAs parade and conclude the pre-race arrivals into Saint-Malo
With a few exceptions, all the of the solo skippers who are set to take part in the 12th edition of La Route du Rhum – Destination Guadeloupe will have arrived safely in Saint-Malo by the end this Wednesday evening. There are already 37 out of the 38 IMOCAs already and were due to take part in a parade of sail before entering the locks and taking their place in the Duguay-Trouin basin.

The whole community in Saint Malo was set to share a moving minute's silence as a tribute to Mike Birch, the first winner of the event in 1978, who passed away last night. That was to followed by the official inauguration of the race village.

Today largely belongs to the IMOCA class which finally took their place at the docks in Saint Malo complementing the Class40, Ocean Fifty, Ultim 32/23, Rhum Mono and Rhum Multi entrants which are already lined up to wait for the start on Sunday 6th November.

A total of 38 IMOCAs have entered this 12th edition of La Route du Rhum – Destination Guadeloupe, a record. But "only" 37 will a priori be present this evening in Saint-Malo. The reason ? One of the skippers, Nicolas Rouger (Demain c'est loin), has had to sort out a technical problem. A change of keel was only completed this Wednesday morning in Port-la-Forêt. He should arrive around 1700hrs Thursday.

Route du Rhum

Mike Birch
Mike Birch Legendary Canadian ocean racer Mike Birch who won the first edition of the Route du Rhum by just 98 seconds passed his final finish line when he died peacefully at the age of 90 during the night of Tuesday into Wednesday at his home in NW France.

The entire Route du Rhum community, preparing in Saint-Malo for the start of the 12th edition of the race, is in mourning. The famous solo Transatlantic race owes a huge debt of gratitude to Birch who at the age of 47 started it all when in 1978, his little yellow trimaran won the race by 98 seconds ahead of Michel Malinovsky's bigger, more powerful monohull.

Anyone who has ever raced or dreamed of multihull ocean racing remembers the image of Mike Birch. That of his Olympus Photo first, fighting against the trade winds in the Canal des Saintes to snatch victory from a monohull twice its size in the first edition of the Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe. "98 seconds for eternity" proclaimed the newspapers at the time, "Only victory is pretty" Michel Malinovsky said in his book and they were right. The revolution was started and the Canadian's diminutive Walter Greene moulded wood plan was the detonator.

Before offshore racing, Mike Birch learned his trade as a sailor which was far from being his first vocation. Born in Vancouver, he was in turn a miner, an oil worker, a cowboy, before taking another look at the horizon. "A character from a novel" summed up Thomas Coville this morning, who had sailed with him on the ORMA Fujicolor trimaran in the 1990s. "I discovered very late that he had had this life before and rode the great outdoors. I read his book, one of the rare seafaring books that I read to the end, as if I had read a story by Jack London. This gentleman has always been young.

At the age of 44 that Mike Birch lined up at the start of his first transatlantic race, the formidable 1976 edition of the OSTAR between Plymouth and Newport. He followed up on his victory in the 1978 Route du Rhum and then built several multihulls to Nigel Irens designs. First the small 50-footer Vital then Formula Tag, a large 26-meter catamaran which gave him victory in Monaco New York in 1985. Then came the ORMA years, these 18.28 m trimarans on which Mike won twice third place on the Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe.

Raceboats Only YYACHTS Y7. POA EUR.

The Y7 was created in collaboration with US designer Bill Tripp, considered one of the world's best naval architects. Our goal was to combine comfortable sailing performance with competitive sailing performance, even on the regatta course.

In conditions where other yachts still use their engines, the sails are already set on the Y7. A displacement of only 29 tons and almost 300 square meters of sail area at wind make move the yacht even in light winds; Y7 owners don't have to worry about the perfect weather all the time.

All halyards, sheets and stretchers run hidden to the steering columns - so the helmsman can operate the Y7 alone at any time. This is not a matter of course for a 70-foot yacht and allows the owner to sail with a very small crew or even on his own.
