470 Worlds Sdot Yam, Israel: Germany enjoyed an exceptional end to qualifying after a dominant performance on day two of 470 World Championship in Sdot Yam, Israel. With the wind shifting unpredictably, few teams were able to string together a consistent performance, but somehow two teams from Germany bucked the trend.

Overnight leaders Luise Wanser & Philipp Autenrieth (GER) surged further into the overall lead when they won their opening heat of the two-race session. Although a 7th in the next race was not quite so stellar, it was respectable enough to keep the Germans in the overall lead with a 3 point gap to an Austrian team, Lara Vadlau & Lukas Mahr (AUT) whose metronomic performance lifts them to 2nd overall.

No team has quite managed to keep all five qualifying race scores in the top 10, but the Austrians have come closest with results of 11,2,4,3,5.

The biggest rising stars of day two were another German team, Simon Diesch & Anna Markfort (GER) who scored two bullets on their side of the qualifying split. This tall, powerful team are always fast in the stronger breeze but today was also about sailing smart and this German crew sailed fast and smart to earn their two race victories. This lifts them to third overall, 2 points back from the Austrians.

For Wednesday, principal race officer Nino Shmueli is once again prepared to wait for conditions to settle down tomorrow afternoon before sending the gold and silver fleets out for two races. Wednesday is also the first day for live tracking and live broadcast of the racing, which you can find here -- Andy Rice

Driven by real test data - Harken
Harken Dock talk is cheap and broken dreams are very expensive. When you need to replicate actual working loads, HarkenLab provides a solution

When grand prix yachts gather in port it's an opportunity for skippers and owners to check out the latest innovations on their rivals' boats, and for crews to compare notes on how well the new stuff actually works. At the bleeding edge of sailing, new technology isn't always subjected to rigorous physical testing in the controlled conditions of an engineering lab. Only a few companies like Harken have the resources to build full-scale prototypes and design test benches that accurately replicate the complex, dynamic load cycles of a regatta or ocean race. It's more usual for a new custom cylinder, winch or traveller design to go from finite element analysis to production and straight into sea trials, tentatively at first and then incrementally towards what has been calculated or estimated to be its theoretical maximum working load.

Italian duo sweep the 2022 Rolex World Sailor of the Year at World Sailing Awards
The unstoppable Nacra 17 duo of Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti have added more awards to their impressive collection after being named Male and Female Rolex World Sailor of the Year 2022, respectively, at the World Sailing Awards at the Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi, tonight.

The pair struck Tokyo 2020 Olympic Gold and continued to dominate the event, winning both the European Championships and World Championships by impressive margins.

Also celebrating after the World Sailing Awards were Greenboats, who won the World Sailing 11th Hour Racing Sustainability Award for pioneering the design and manufacture of natural fibre products and components, demonstrating and establishing sustainable alternatives to conventional composite materials.

Team Australia SailGP was named Team of the Year after winning back-to-back SailGP titles, and the Vortex Pod Racer won Boat of the Year.

David Tillett AM awarded World Sailing's Beppe Croce Trophy

David Tillett Prominent Australian sailing administrator David Tillett AM has been awarded World Sailing's prestigious Beppe Croce Trophy, which honours an individual for their outstanding voluntary contribution to the sport of sailing.

Tillet was presented with the Trophy at the World Sailing Annual Conference in Abu Dhabi, becoming just the second Australian to receive the honour after David Kellett AM was recognised in 2014.

Tillett, 68, has spent the last 30 years making the big calls at the top rungs of international sailing as both an umpire and jury chairman.

His list of accomplishments is long. He has been involved in eight America's Cups, five Olympic Games and five Volvo Ocean Races as an Umpire, Jury member and/or Jury Chair.

He has also made a significant contribution to World Sailing, having sat on their Racing Rules Committee (2000-12), Constitution Committee (Member 2012-present, Chairman 2020-present) and as a Council Member from 1998-2017.

Tillet has not slowed down, as he remains actively involved in the sport including his roles as Chair of the international Jury for the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race and Chair of the Australian Sailing Hall of Fame Selection Panel among many others. -- Michael Martin

Seahorse Sailor Of The Month
This month's nominees:

Deutschland Dominates at 470 Worlds Roberto Lacorte (ITA)
Without performance sailing enthusiasts like Roberto Lacorte who are fortunate enough to have sufficient resources to follow their dreams we would still be back around the time of the first canting keels. America’s Cup figures like Matteo de Nora and Larry Ellison believed it when told their giant Cup boats could fly and barely 10 years later we take flying big boats for granted. So thank you, Roberto, and also for giving Seahorse such cool stuff to write about!

Deutschland Dominates at 470 Worlds Johnny Cooper (GBR)
When Mark Mills answered Irvine Laidlaw’s request for a fun turnkey design for Cape Town he had no idea what would happen. Twenty-one Cape 31s raced the UK Nationals, 10 more are expected in 2023. In barely two years the UK title has become one of the Solent’s big prizes and this year Johnny Cooper’s team coolly saw off a fleet dripping with pro trimmers and tacticians. As they all walked down each morning you could hear the medals clanking from Southampton...

Deutschland Dominates at 470 Worlds October's winner:
Peter Duncan (USA)
Andrew Palfrey: Great to see Peter recognised in this way, although he’d be embarrassed about the nomination. Getting to know Peter quite well now, I’ve learnt that his true passion is simply racing in competitive classes against the best there is. He has zero interest in self promotion. His key strength is his ability to drive a boat with incredible accuracy. Peter surrounds himself with good people, trusts them completely then ensures he fulfils his part of the puzzle.

Quantum Racing carry winning momentum into Barcelona Day 1
Photo by Max Ranchi, www.maxranchi.com. Click on image for photo gallery.

52 Super Series Light winds prevailed for the first day of the 2022 season title deciding regatta, the 52 Super Series Barcelona Sailing Week, which saw a comfortable win for Doug DeVos's Quantum Racing. With De Vos steering they started sharply and with speed at the favoured left, offshore end of the start line and led all the way to the finish gun. Andy Soriano's Alegre team held off a spirited final leg attack from Ergin Imre's Provezza to earn second place.

Racing this week back in Barcelona where the 52 Super Series was born in May 2012 with just four boats completing that inaugural regatta, here there is an excellent fleet of 10 TP52s underlining the continued success of what remains the world's leading grand prix monohull circuit. The return of the French Paprec team for the first time since they raced their previous boat in Cape Town in February 2020 augments the fleet back to the full strength, auguring well for 2023 and beyond.

52 Super Series Barcelona Sailing Week Provisional Standings
1. Quantum Racing (USA), Doug DeVos, 1 pt
2. Alegre (GBR), Andy Soriano, 2 pts
3. Provezza (TUR), Ergin Imre, 3 pts

Finn Class launches new World Ranking with more than a thousand sailors
After months of development, the Finn Class is excited to announce the launch of its new World Ranking list. The new ranking platform includes more than one thousand sailors from 37 nations, and provides an excellent illustration of the spread, popularity and energy within the class at the moment.

Laurent Hay, from France, becomes the first Finn World No.1 using the new platform, with a very small points margin over Filipe Silva, from Portugal, with The Netherlands' Bas de Waal in third. In the top 20 alone there are 11 nations.

This first list includes results from 58 events in 21 countries worldwide in the 12 months up to and including September 2022. A total of 1,054 sailors from 37 nations took part in at least one of these events, with 500 sailors taking part in three or more regattas. There were a total of over 2,000 individual race positions included on this first release.

The new Finn World Ranking list is part of the class's longer term global event strategy that will be designed around inclusivity, cross border cooperation with calendars and with a focus on supporting national associations across the world. It also provides the class with a unified platform to promote events, sponsors and sailors.

The Finn World Ranking list is based on each sailors best five events over a two year rolling system and aims to include results from as many events around the world as possible along with the major class championships. A full explanation of the platform can be found here.

Finn World Ranking 001 - October 2022 (top 20 from 1,054 sailors) Full list can be be downloaded from the class website as a PDF here or as an Excel file here.
