Rolex Middle Sea Race Multihull Line Honours
Riccardo Pavoncelli's MOD70 Mana (ITA) crossed the finish line of the 2022 Rolex Middle Sea Race at 00:32:38 CEST on Tuesday 25 October to take Multihull Line Honours in an elapsed time of 61 hours 32 minutes 38 seconds.

Mana crew: Riccardo Pavoncelli, Alexia Barrier, Paul Larsen, Jeff Mearing, Tom Dawson, Jonny Malbon, Kai Weeks, Evan Walker.

In an electrifying finish Mana crossed the line less than one minute ahead of Zoulou (FRA), skippered by Erik Maris, after two and a half days of racing and 606 nautical miles. Giovanni Soldini's Maserati Multi 70 (ITA) finished third, ten minutes after Zoulou. How to follow

470 World Championship
Sdot Yam, Israel: Three races in a building breeze sees Luise Wanser & Philipp Autenrieth (GER) leading at the end of day one at the 470 World Championship in Sdot Yam, Israel.

With the 60-boat fleet split into two qualifying groups, the aim is always to be as consistent as possible. With all three scores counting, it was Keiju Okada and Miho Yoshioka (JPN) who enjoyed the best day on the water with scores of 1,7,5. By contrast, Wanser and Autenrieth began their campaign with a lowly 21st place but bounced back with a 2nd and 1st place in the next two heats. With teams able to discard the worst of their scores, this puts the Germans in the lead, even if they'd probably rather trade places with the Japanese who are in fourth place overall.

A common theme in the post-race conversations was the wind shifts, being able to pick them when you wanted. There wasn't a clear side that was favoured, it was a game of patience, waiting for the right moment to tack on the shift. Consistency was hard to find, and in second place overall are Jianyong Xu & Yahan Tu (CHN) who started out the day perfectly with a bullet, but followed up with an 18th before recovering with a third in the last race of the afternoon.

Principal race officer Nino Shmueli expects the breeze to take a while to settle down on Tuesday afternoon, so has set a start time of 1400 hours local time for the two races to complete the qualifying phase of the competition. Wednesday will be the start of the gold fleet racing for the top half of the fleet.

Starting Wednesday, there will be a livestream of the racing available here-- Andy Rice

Sail fast with confidence - Cyclops Marine
WHAT Want to know optimal rig loads for maximum speed? Cyclops has the answer

Cyclops load-sensing technology is designed to tell you how hard and fast you can safely push your boat for maximum performance without fear of breakage. As Cyclops CEO Ian 'Chips' Howarth puts it: 'For decades, sailors have been given these amazing engines - these beautifully designed and created sails - to drive their boats as fast as possible. Now, you wouldn't thinking of driving a fast car without a rev counter, but that's effectively what we've been doing on sailing boats. With Cyclops technology, we're giving sailors the opportunity to fit that missing rev counter, which means they can run their engines - those hitech sails - at optimum performance and much more safely too.'

2023 Aegean 600 Race
AEGEAN 600 The relationship of the Greeks with the sea has been measured for millennia. Since ancient times, with their small sailboats or rowing boats, they were bold seafarers and explorers. In modern times, our sailing athletes are amongst the world's leading and compete in international events in Olympic classes as well as inshore and offshore regattas.

The Aegean Sea, known from philosophy, literature and fine arts to all civilized world, is one of the most beautiful sailing venues for racing and leisure sailing. The Hellenic Offshore Racing Club, a yacht club with extensive experience in organizing international events, decided to give sailors the opportunity to take part in a 600 nm non-stop race. AEGEAN 600 is a race with many challenges as the participants will need to come "face-to-face" with the famous Aegean Northern winds while, at the same time, enjoy the beauties of the Aegean islands.

As a member of the International Olympic Committee, president of the Hellenic Olympic Committee and a former Olympic athlete, I would like to invite sailors to take part in the "AEGEAN 600", wish them to enjoy the sailing race as well as the parallel onshore events planned by the organizing committee, always taking into consideration the principles and values of Greek hospitality.

Augie Diaz Wins 2022 International. Masters Regatta
And there you have it! Augie Diaz has officially been named the 2022 International Masters Regatta Champion. It's only ever so often that a regatta stays this unpredictable down to the last leg of the last race. All four of the top players went into the final race of the day with the chance to come out on top. Diaz, however, was the one of eleven skippers just talented enough to take home the coveted blue blazer. Some say a sprinkle of luck, too, can go a long way.

The final standings have Augie Diaz with 46 points in first, Terry McLaughlin with 50 points in second, and Tad Lacey with 51 points in third.

"It was all about our team. We had a great team. Mark Reynolds did a great job, Benny Mitchell, Craig Leweck, Chuck Sinks, and Al Pleskus kept us going. It was very exciting, and it was really tough. I feel very fortunate to be able to prevail," explained Diaz.

This is Augie Diaz's second time as Masters Regatta champion.

Royal Western Allspars Final Fling Regatta
October 15th weekend saw the Royal Western Yacht Club host the annual event for the Allspars Final Fling Dinghy Regatta. The regatta, now in its fifth year saw dinghies congregate to Plymouth to enjoy and be challenged by the forever changing wind and tide that Plymouth Sound has to offer. With a drop in entries due to the weather forecast, we saw 35 boats take to the water.

The weekend presented many challenges with the high winds and spring tides. The first day, Saturday we saw a break in the weather and managed to run one windward leeward before the wind speed increased and a weather front came in where we retreated back to the warmth and safety of the Royal Western Club House for a sponsored Happy Hour and daily prizes.

Sunday was a much better day which meant we were able to run with three back-to-back races South of Drakes Island. Winds gusting around 25 mph and an offshore swell coming into the sound, the fleet was split into a Fast and Slow Handicap and managed by the in-house Race Management team onboard Fulmar. The weekend finished with food, drinks and overall prizes back at the Club House.

The dates for the sixth year has been released as October 14th and 15th 2023 and we'd like to welcome all to come and join us.

Top Three Fast Handicap Results
1. VXOne - Andy Couch / Martin Couch, 19 points
2. Cherub - Paul Croote / Andrew Whapshott, 21
3. 4000 - Matt Reynolds / Ollie DiBartolo, 21

Top Three Fast Handicap Results
1. GP14 - Jason Culmer / Caspar Barton, 10
2. Phantom - Jon Rickard, 16
3. Phantom - Mark Spruce, 21

IRC rating races positively into 2023
This year's international IRC Congress was held in Malta ahead of the Rolex Middle Sea Race, giving delegates the opportunity to see some of the impressive fleet arriving for the race.

The meeting was chaired by Michael Boyd, also Chairman of the IRC Board, and representatives of several countries were present along with the IRC teams from the UK and France, while others around the world participated by video conference, including some new national representatives who will further strengthen IRC.

Technical developments of the IRC rating rule
The trial launched this year in the southern hemisphere to introduce the ability for any boat to hold a secondary valid certificate met with great success, and Congress agreed to extend this rule worldwide from 2023. The Secondary certificate incorporates the short-handed certificate and its potential is wide ranging, from inshore/offshore to crewed/short-handed, or simply a different configuration for a single race. Also, in future the IRC certificate will include a page 2 which will include a basic drawing including the rated data to help owners and competitors easily see the rated configuration.

Double-handed racing is on the rise and those who also race fully crewed can hold two valid certificates in different configurations. The new Secondary Certificate incorporates the short-handed certificate with a wider variety of configuration options.

The IRC Congress Minutes and papers are published here

The 2023 agreed rule changes and full rule text will be published on https:/ircrating.org when finalised.

Record numbers for Australia's oldest yacht race
A change of start date and the large numbers taking part in the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria's (ORCV) 50th Melbourne to Hobart Yacht Race (Westcoaster) has prompted record numbers for the Club's annual Melbourne to Devonport Race - or 'Rudder Cup' as it famously known.

Starting on Friday 28 October at 4pm local time, the ORCV made the decision to move the Rudder Cup's start date to honour its history and let it stand out from the 50th Westcoaster. In doing so, it left the door open for competitors to contest both races and the opportunity has been embraced with open arms.

Vertigo took line honours in the 2021 Rudder Cup, but with larger yachts opposing her this year, repeating that feat is unlikely. However, an overall win is not out of the question. Her owner, Tim Olding, remains cautiously optimistic.

"I don't ever make predictions," he said. "We just go and do our best. We have a mainly young crew again. As usual, there is a large contingent of female sailors; some doing their first Bass Strait crossing. Clare (Olding's 22-year-old daughter) is co-skipper and she's organising the crew. I'm organising the boat. We've been training and doing our MOB drill to prepare."

Among those prepped to chase line honours are Extasea, Hartbreaker, Rush and MRV. Extasea's owner, Paul Buchholz, who won the 100th anniversary race with his DK46 in 2007, is buoyed up for this year's race.

Buchholz will again be chasing the race record of 19 hours 32mins 56secs, held by Joe Westerlo's Prowler since 1998. Now 23 years-old, it is Australia's longest held offshore race record.

Nick McElwee's Hick 35, Honey Pot, is the lone Tasmanian entry in the fleet. She arrived in plenty of time from Port Dalrymple Yacht Club. It is hoped others from Tassie join the fleet over the coming years.

The Rudder Cup is Australia's oldest ocean race and the fifth oldest in the world. Inaugurated in 1907, it is a tactical 195 nautical miles from Portsea in Melbourne to Devonport in Tasmania and has been won by fully crewed, double-handed and 4 Plus Autohelm yachts. Recognised as being ahead of its time, the race is open to fully crewed, double-handed, Four + Autohelm and multihull boats. -- Di Pearson/ORCV media
