Swiss on top of J/70 Worlds in Monaco
J/70 Worlds 23 nations, 90 boats, 400 sailors and a field worthy of the wildest dreams heralded the J/70 World Championship, organised for the first time by Yacht Club de Monaco, in collaboration with the J/70 International Class and partnered by Monegasque Sailing Federation, FxPro, Xerjoff, Sebago and SLAM.

There were no shortage of superlatives to describe the mastery, helmsmanship and tight mark roundings achieved by the crew on Killian Wagen’s Decouvertes. The Swiss boat, winner of the 2022 Primo Cup, blew the competition away in the Open category with characteristic Swiss consistency in the light airs.

With more than 50 trophy-winning sailors from the Olympics, America’s Cup and other one design circuits, the level was so high it was impossible to make predictions. But another team that did spectacularly well was Monaco boat Leonteq led by Pierrik Devic who emerged this Worlds vice-champion at home, with the Americans on Peter S. Duncan’s Relative Obscurity completing the Open podium.

The level was such that gaps never widened. Everyone understood that if they got the start right, the race was half-won; and while a dozen impatient boats paid the price, others showed great skill like Australian Tim Ryan’s crew (Vamos) in the One Pro (one professional aboard) category who beat the Monaco-based Ludovico Fassitelli (Junda) 2nd, and Spaniard Mon Canellas (Outlier) in 3rd.

After the victory in the Open, it was another win for the Swiss this time in the Corinthian (amateur) group with a well-deserved first place for Nick Zeltner’s Quarter2eleven. He snatched victory from under the nose of Spaniard Luis Bugallo (Marnatura), while the French Team Youth FFV led by Timothe Rossi was 3rd.

The next meeting in the Principality is Act 1 of the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series (3-6 November 2022), not forgetting the two YCM boats competing in the Route du Rum (Malizia-Seaexplorer with Boris Herrmann and Oren Nataf’s Rayon Vert) which starts in St Malo on 6th November.

Rolex Middle Sea Race
The story so far of the 43rd Rolex Middle Sea Race is one of determination and true grit, grinding out the miles one by one, sometimes taking more than hour to do so. Accepting pats on the back and slaps on the face from the wind is par for this edition. The fleet is currently spread between the Aeolian Islands north of Sicily, 220nm along the track, back to just north of Syracuse, a mere 83nm into the race. If it makes for hard watching from the shore, imagine life onboard.

Currently, the MOD70 Mana, just north of Filicudi, is doing just over 7 knots, 2nm ahead of Maserati Multi70. Meanwhile, Zoulou, another MOD70, looks to have dived south towards Snowflake, perhaps to stay in or find better pressure. All four are well north of the rhumb line. The leading monohulls are right among them. The monohull maxi Bullitt, sailing parallel with Maserati at a similar speed, leads the larger Leopard 3 by about 3.5nm. According to the tracker, the French Ker 46 Daguet 3 - Corum - at Stromboli - is leading overall in the battle for the Rolex Middle Sea Race Trophy under IRC time correction, but this is really just an indication with so much of the race still to run.

Yesterday’s start from Grand Harbour was a foretaste of the 24 hours that would follow. The wind continually dropped in and out. Some boats were able to make fast progress out through the breakwater into open water. For others it was more miss than hit. The 55nm passage north to Capo Passero, on the southeast corner of Sicily, followed a similar pattern among all classes: head northeast out of the harbour for about 20nm before choosing the right moment to turn north to Sicily.

470 Worlds About To Start In Israel
Sdot Yam, Israel: Sixty international teams are ready to contest the 470 World Championship in Sdot Yam, Israel, from 22 to 29 October. With less than two years to the Olympic Games in Paris 2024, the 2022 World Championship is an important regatta for teams to find out where they stand in the new era of mixed competition.

Male helm/ female crew and female helm/ male crew combinations will be competing at the event. In terms of the form book, Anton Dahlberg & Lovisa Karlsson (SWE) will start as the favourites for the world title. Having won the European Championship in Turkey six weeks ago and a few days ago winning a warm-up regatta at Sdot Yam, the 470 Open Israel National Championship, the Swedes have set a benchmark for the rest to follow.

Dahlberg, who won Olympic silver last year in the men’s fleet, is one of a number of Olympic medallists from Tokyo 2020. The women’s 470 Olympic Champion crew Eilidh McIntyre (GBR) finished fourth at the Israel Nationals with helmsman Martin Wrigley. Olympic bronze medallist and SailGP helmsman for Spain, Jordi Xammar (ESP) with crew Nora Brugman, was only seventh at the warm-up event but the Spaniards proved their credentials with a silver medal at last month’s Europeans.

Perhaps the most experienced sailor in the fleet is Fernando Oliveira (BRA), who has represented Brazil in the 470 at every Olympic Games going back to Sydney 2000 and won a bronze medal in Beijing 2008. While Oliveira is racing the Worlds with Rodolfo Streibel on trapeze, two of Oliveira’s former Olympic crews, Isabel Swan and Ana Luiza Barbachan, are also racing in other Brazilian boats.

Sunday 23 October is practice race day and opening ceremony in the evening. The first race of the Championship is scheduled for 1200 hours local time on Monday 24 October. -- Andy Rice

18ft Skiffs: Spring Championship, Race 2

18ft Skiffs The young Oak Double Bay-4 Pines team of Alex Marinelli, Matt Doyle and Darcy McCracken won their first 18 footer race when they led home the 16-strong Australian 18 Footers League fleet in Race 2 of the Spring Championship on Sydney Harbour today.

Today was a day for the young teams as The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines took the victory by 15s from the Noakes Blue team of Nathan McNamara, Peter McLeod and Conor Hay who were having only their second start in an 18 footer race.

The third placed team of Cam Gundy, John Waltin and Markus Sampson, sailing the former Ilve skiff, finished a further 1m41s back in third place. Cam is experienced in the 18 footer fleet however it was only his second start as a skipper.

It was a far different situation for the fourth placed Yandoo, whose skipper John Winning is presently having his 37th season as skipper in the 18s.

Fifth today was 18 Footers Bar & Restaurant (Pedro Vozone), followed by Birkenhead Point Marina (Kirk Mitchell).

After the first two races of the championship, The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines and Yandoo share the point lead on seven points, followed by Ilve on 11, Noakes Blue on 13, then Birkenhead Point Marina and Burrawang-Young Henrys (Simon Nearn) tied for fifth place on 16 points.

Race 1 of the Club Championship will be sailed next Sunday. Points for Race 3 of the Spring Championship will be scored based on the handicap section of the Club Championship.

The 7-race Spring Championship has a cumulative, NO DROP pointscore, with the 2022-23 champion not being determined until after Race 7 on Sunday, November 20. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

2022 WMRT Final Moves to Sydney
Organisers of the World Match Racing Tour have announced the 2022 WMRT Final has been re-scheduled to 13-18 December in Sydney, Australia. The event will be co-hosted with the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) and the winner will be crowned official 2022 Match Racing World Champion.

The change of venue for the 2022 WMRT Final follows the ongoing border closures in China, where the WMRT Final was previously scheduled to take place in Shenzhen from 6-11 December. Strict travel restrictions for international visitors to China have been in place since the start of the global pandemic in 2020

“It is unfortunate we have been unable to host the WMRT Final in Shenzhen again this year due to the continued travel restrictions to China” commented WMRT Executive Director James Pleasance “however, to ensure we can still host the tour final this year, we are very pleased to partner with the CYCA to host the event in Sydney - the club has a great deal of experience in running world class match racing events and sailing conditions in Sydney in December should be ideal as well.”

Up to 12 teams are being invited to the event including defending match racing world champion Taylor Canfield (Stars + Stripes Team USA) and six-time world champion Ian Williams from Great Britain. The event will be sailed in the CYCA fleet of Elliott 7m keelboats with crews of 4 or 5. Racing will take place over 5 days with a single round robin stage followed by a repechage, Quarter Finals, Semi Finals and Final on Sunday 18 December.

The MOD70, A Rebirth Of The Class
The original ambition of the MOD70 one-design series of multihulls was to “build a unique boat which would be the reference for the next ten years (2010-2020)”. And while the beginnings were promising, the series subsequently collapsed due to the lack of sponsors and then participants. But now, more than ten years after the launch of the first boat, Race for Water, five of the seven original boats which were designed by VPLP will be at the start of this Middle Sea Race.

Two competed here a year ago: Maserati (Giovanni Soldini) - ex Gitana XV - and Mana – the ex Spindrift – which has been owned since 2020 by the Italian Riccardo Pavoncelli. But Mana is set to change hands, as Alexia Barrier will take over the boat. She says, "I am going to announce a first sponsor during the start of the Route du Rhum and then formalize the acquisition of the boat which will serve as a training platform for two years before moving to an Ultim in 2025 as part of my Jules Verne Trophy project (see our article).”

Three other MOD70s will compete in this Mediterranean classic in their new colours, as they have all changed hands over the past year. The former Foncia, which later became Phaedo 3 and then Beau Geste, has been bought by the Dutchman Frank Slootman, boss of Snowflake, a major player in computer data management.

The other two are owned under the French flag like Barrier’s boat will be: Erik Maris, already a player on the GC32 circuit has bought the old PowerPlay (the last MOD built originally under the name of Paprec Recyclage), renamed Zoulou; Eric Defert, with the financial support of Thibaut George, founder and managing director of Drekan Groupe, which has supported him since 2010, took over the former Race for Water which now carries the name of Axciss (whose Drekan is one of the subsidiaries).

"World on Water" October 21.22 Global Sailing Highlights
The Luna Rossa prototype was conceived, designed and built at the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli base and it is a highly innovative and complex project from an engineering and technological point of view, which adopts experimental solutions in every sector and latest generation materials.

This is the Sailing World on Water for October 21, 2022. Here are highlights of the global sport released in the last seven days.

An ultra-light onshore breeze at the 44Cup Portoroz World Championship should have made for a straightforward opening day to the high performance one design’s pinnacle event of the season. In fact it demonstrated how the nimble RC44 can race meaningfully in practically no wind, but still scores were high with all eight teams suffering at least one big result.

Lighter winds on day 21 make for a great day off the Barcelona coastline for Alinghi Red Bull racing.
