Cup Spy: American Magic sails with cyclors for the first time
Cyclors reappeared for the first time in an America's Cup since 2017, when American Magic gave a practical demonstration of their just announced partnership with SRAM, claimed to be the world's most innovative bicycle component manufacturer.

The use of cyclors by the New York Yacht Club's team, is not a surprise given their announcement of the partnership two days ago. However using the bikes to provide onboard power for the hydraulic control systems, just three days after re-launching the AC75 shows the team have been working hard over the last six months.

After the training session Kirk Jordan, a structural engineer on the American Magic design team did a dockside interview, with a member of the AC37 Joint Recon team assigned to American Magic.

Jordan explained that the cycles were just one "of the features that we're experimenting with now. We put them on for the first time today. We're just at the beginning of that learning curve."

He was unable to say whether the cyclors met the power requirements of the AC75, which is the first to have been near-converted to the Version 2 of the AC75 Class rule - which incorporates many changes that will apply to boats sailed in the next America's Cup.

Team Spirit
Life for Holcim - PRB IMOCA skipper Kevin Escoffier has been moving at a frenetic pace since this August the 42-year-old French yachtsman announced his return to The Ocean Race for the third time.

Escoffier had originally planned his campaign around competing singlehanded in the Vendee Globe 2024, but when his commercial partner - the French building products company PRB - was purchased by the Swiss multinational organisation Holcim, the opportunity to add The Ocean Race to his schedule presented itself.

Holcim was already committed to promoting its sustainability message around the world and had funded Circular Explorer - a 100 percent solar-powered catamaran in the Philippines designed to recover and recycle plastic from the world's oceans and rivers.

The company quickly recognised the potential for PRB's partnership with Escoffier - part of the French organisation's 30-year commitment to sailing and ocean racing in particular - to help amplify their circular economy messaging via an entry in The Ocean Race 2022-23.

Newly branded in its blue and green GO CIRCULAR livery the Holcim - PRB IMOCA was originally commissioned and part-built for an early American-backed campaign which ultimately did not come to fruition.

PRB bought the Guillaume Verdier designed-boat from the Carrington Boats yard in England and shipped across the Channel to the French team's base in Lorient for completion.

19 maxis and five MOD70s for Rolex Middle Sea Race

The classic 600 mile offshore race with certainly the most exotic course - the Rolex Middle Sea Race will this Saturday launch the latest edition of the International Maxi Association's Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge (MMOC). Running into 2023 the MMOC comprises seven events culminating in next August's Palermo-Montecarlo. Its silver perpetual trophy is awarded to the winner at the IMA annual dinner at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo every September.

Maxi participation in the race has been strong since the first race, in 1968, was won by Dutch plywood pioneer Kees Bruynzeel's 74ft ketch Stormvogel. This year, of a provisional 124 starters from 24 nations, 19 are maxis and five more are MOD70 trimarans.

Mana MOD70

Winner of the IMA's MMOC for 2021-22 was Frenchman Jean-Pierre Barjon and his Botin Partners 65 Spirit of Lorina. He returns with a bigger program this season that starts with the Rolex Middle Sea Race. Remarkably this is Barjon's first time competing here.

Favourite for monohull line honours this year is the Farr 100 Leopard 3, which claimed this prize in 2009. For her Dutch owner it too will be his first time.

Leading the high performance 60 footers will be Marton Jozsa and his DSS canting keel Reichel/Pugh 60 Wild Joe. This will be the team's 11th Rolex Middle Sea Race.

The first start will be at 1100 CEST on Saturday, 22nd October. -- James Boyd / International Maxi Association

30th China Coast Regatta
2022 marked the 30th edition of the China Coast Regatta. Based out of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club's Middle Island water sports training centre; 29 boats competed in a variety of windward/leeward, geometric and island courses in the waters south and east of Hong Kong Island, in the most superb sailing conditions that Hong Kong has to offer.

In the most competitive fleet, eight boats competed in IRC Racer Div 1, including an impressive variety of new lightweight yachts including: Andrew Taylor and Denis Martinet's newly imported Cape 31Capitano, which made the journey to Hong Kong just in time to compete against other strong local contenders of Glenn Smith's Grand Soleil 44 Wild Card, Eddy Lee's full carbon Neo Roma 430 Next and Dennis Chien's Mat 1245 Arcturus+.

However, it was to be 2021 division winner Nick Burns' Witchcraft who took three bullets on Day 1, setting her up for the title again in 2022. Witchcraft successfully defending her lead on the final day by only one point after a tight tussle with Capitano, who had taken the win in the Island Race on Day 2, and two more bullets on the final day. Third place overall went to Albert Cheung's Full Tilt.

In the IRC Racer 2 fleet, there was neck-to-neck competition between Stephen Jones and James Verner's Nightshift and Nicolas Cohen-Addad's Jinn throughout the regatta - they were both tied in Race 5 with exactly the same corrected time, however in the end it was Nightshift who took the overall win - two points clear of Jinn.

Competition was also tight in ICR Racer 3 among the three strong teams of Dexter II, Admiralty Harbour Whiskey Jack, and Juice. At the end of day two, the three yachts held an extremely tight score card with only one point separating each of the teams. Skipper Simon Wong took Dexter II to an impressive win in the final race, securing 1st place overall, and with one discard in effect, was two points clear of Nick Southward's Admiralty Harbour Whiskey Jack.

In the HKPN division, Niccolo Manno's Trimaran Carbon 3 stole the show with a massive lead in the Day 3 Island race, finishing one hour ahead of the other competitors and taking one bullet in the final day of racing to put them in 2nd overall, three points behind Sunny Leung's Jibulai.

Multiplast and the Route du Rhum, what a story!
With 17 boats (including 14 complete builds, see the list below), Multiplast will be one of the best represented yards at the start of the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe, on November 6th. And that represents a timely opportunity to catch up with Multiplast general manager Yann Penfornis to reflect on the importance of the event for the Vannes boatyard.

Multiplast have been present on the Route du Rhum since 1986. What is your greatest memory?
Certainly it is the victory of Groupama 3 in 2010. Franck Cammas had just won the Jules Verne Trophy with the crew, we were preparing Groupama 4, which was the Volvo 70 with which he went on to win the Volvo Ocean Race 18 months later. And between these two, he took on the Route du Rhum on a boat which was not in any way designed for solo racing. And winning showed the trimaran was decidedly well designed and well founded. Four years later, Loick Peyron won (by then the trimaran was then called Banque Populaire VII). I remember a morning call from Loick when he was off the Azores. He had spotted cracks in the front beam fairing and was asking us if it was reasonable to continue. In a few minutes, you have to find the design elements, analyze the problem calmly and give an answer and that fully engages you. Four years later, in 2018, when I went to bed, François Gabart was still leading the race ahead of Francis Joyon. But then we all know the rest with the boat's third consecutive victory. That was a short night!

But it is a double-edged sword when things go wrong isn't it?
Yes, when the boat wins it is the skipper who in the spotlight. When the boat breaks we look at builders and architects, that is just the way of it. That is why reliability is so important!

A new 60 footer on order... but a day boat! After three Imoca 60-footers, built in part (hull and deck for V and B-Monbana-Mayenne ) or in full ( Malizia Seaxplorer and Paprec Arkea , delivered next January), the Multiplast yard will tackle by the end of the year to another 18-metre monohull, but for a completely different use than a solo round the world race. It is indeed a day boat , commissioned by an owner, Jacky Setton , a Franco-American businessman - former president of Pioneer France in particular - who has been loyal to the yard for nearly 15 years now.

Multiplast

" We are always honored to have him come back to us, this is the fifth boat he has ordered from us ," rejoices the managing director of Multiplast, Yann Penfornis. In particular, we transformed the former Innovation Explorer, which took part in The Race, into a (very) fast cruiser, under the name of Swift; we have also built a 36ft Roll Jack, a 30ft Paja and a 60ft first day boat, Ciao Gianni (photo above). The next one, based on Rolf Vrolijk plans, is in line with Ciao Gianni, it is intended for the same program: day trips , with however a slightly different design. "

In charge of the project after having worked on Boris Herrmann's Imoca, Samuel Napoleoni explains: " Compared to an Imoca, it is very different: this 60 footer is four times less structured and much narrower, with a rather high mast, 24 meters, it is quite steep to the canvas. And its particularity is that it is extremely simple for a boat of this size , very sleek, no frills, with a very flat deck and just enough to put your legs in the T-shaped cockpit. Inside, it is almost empty, there are only the captive winches, the systems, the thrusters, the engine… It is the owner's desire to have an efficient boat, easy to operate and maintain."

Dehler 30 OD: the most fun you can have on the water

While we cruised along at a relaxed 10 knots, flying the A5 asymmetric spinnaker with 13-14 knots of wind on the beam, I couldn't help thinking that this was a very efficient way of getting around the Solent.

It was efficient in terms of both manpower and size of boat, because we weren't on a 40ft grand-prix racing yacht with 10 crew on the rail.

Neither were we on a multihull. We - and there were just three of us - were on a 30-foot monohull, and only the helmsman and trimmer were doing any work.

Yes, it was a race boat, but as easy to sail as most cruisers and going about twice as fast.

Whichever way you look at it, our speed-to-effort ratio wasn't bad.

Aperio - from the Latin "to reveal" - is a sailing yacht inspired by the notions of duality and metamorphosis. Carrying a pair of 40-metre-high wingsails, she is a 151' catamaran created by several architects and designers at VPLP Design in collaboration with Patrick le Quement, a reference in the design world with whom VPLP has been working for over a decade. What makes Aperio distinct is her ability to take on two very different appearances, one when sailing, the other at anchor. "At sea, the boat's powerful physique expresses her desire for motion. She is very sculptural. The marvellous fluidity of the manta ray was the main influence for her design," says Patrick le Quement.

Aperio

"Aperio is as elegant as she is fast," says Yann Prummel, VPLP designer whose notable contributions include, in addition to this latest yacht, the firm's previous concept boat, Seaffinity, which went on display at Monaco last year. We don't want Aperio to impose herself on the natural world, but instead we want her to be coherent with her environment. She has a very pure silhouette. Her lines, sometimes marked, sometimes blurred, constitute a bridge between a natural, biological world and one that is purely technical."

Aperio is designed to accommodate up to ten people aboard, as well as five crew members. Who would be interested in a yacht like this? Yann Prummel sees her as "a boat for sharing, where several families embark together. Installing a coworking space was an important consideration for us, because it allows the boat to be used as a workplace."

Hanse 460: first test of this luxurious cruiser

This latest Hanse is the first to be designed by Berret-Racoupeau.

After the earliest models, which used the moulds of discontinued, slim-hulled Scandinavian designs, every Hanse has been designed by Judel/Vrolijk in what became one of boatbuilding's most enduring and successful partnerships.

Hanse 460

Inevitably, in line with modern trends, each new wave of Hanses has been higher, wider and more voluminous than the last.

Hanse's founder, Michael Schmidt, never lost sight of the performance side, however. Once upon a time he did do rather well in the Admiral's Cup.

For all their growing girths and towering topsides, Hanses have always been boats that sail. They also reached a stage a while ago when I for one - and I wasn't alone - reckoned I had a pretty good idea of what to expect when a new model was announced.

At a glance, the 460 looks sleeker and sportier than earlier models. More angular too, with a reverse rake to the bow and a pronounced knuckle running to about halfway aft.

In Hanse tradition there are no hard-angled chines but the 460 has a pronounced soft chine towards the stern.

On the wallywind150, the cabin is always aft to provide access to the owner's private cockpit. It is hard to overstate the majesty of this feature, which can be left open to maximise al fresco living, or closed off to create an indoor/outdoor space between the owner's quarters and the exterior. With room for walk in wardrobes, a private office and multiple seating areas, the breath-taking owner's cabin is more akin to those found on larger 60m (200') yachts. The TV or playroom forward can also be easily converted for kids or a nanny to create a fifth cabin.

Wally 150

Finish is a matter of taste for the eventual owner, but Wally's renderings show vividly what can be achieved with the sort of clean, natural styling for which the brand is famous. Teak, fine woods and neutral upholstery combine to create a sense of space, wellbeing and casual sophistication.
