Globe40 3rd Leg: 34' Difference At The Finish For 34 Days At Sea
At 09.18 hours local time, it was the Dutch crew on SEC HAYAI which took line honours and leg three victory in the GLOBE40 at the entrance to the Auckland Bay. Spanning some 7,000 nautical miles in all, it proved to be a particularly gruelling leg for the crews due to its lengthy duration, the ever-changing weather conditions alternating between zones of calm, a lot of headwinds and depressions, and a course which involved a relentless sequence of very different navigation zones. At the front of the fleet the duelling was virtually constant with MILAI Around The World, and SEC HAYAI won with a tiny credit of 3, 5 Milles.

After setting sail from Mauritius on 11 September, Frans Budel and Ysbrand Endt sailed an outstanding course, which equated to 34 days 18 hours at sea in all for this leg. Already second in the overall ranking, the Dutch team clearly stepped things up a gear in this third leg, despite sailing a boat which is not of the more newest in the fleet. Thanks to great speeds out on the water at all times with no major damage, a particularly well-prepared boat technically, excellent tactical decisions throughout and very strong cohesion aboard, the winners boasted all the ingredients for success. First to Cape Leeuwin, first to enter the Pacific in the Bass Strait, first to Cape Reinga to the north of New Zealand, final victory seemed inevitable. In reality though, they faced stiff opposition throughout from the Japanese and Italian crew on MILAI Around the World, Masa Suzuki and Luca Rosetti, with seldom more than twenty miles or so between the two adversaries.

To date, three different winners have been crowned in the first three GLOBE40 legs, which just goes to show the standard of the competition in this event. The American team AMHAS is expected in the evening in Auckland and GRYPHON SOLO2 and WHISKEY JACK should end their duel next Wednesday.

With this latest victory, SEC HAYAI secures the top spot in the overall ranking. A first place which the crew will have to defend on 29 October as the fleet sets sail on the 4th leg, which will lead the competitors to the beautiful Papeete in French Polynesia, a key stage in this first edition of the GLOBE40.

BEUGEN II and SUGAR are new ORC Sportboat European Champions

ORC Sportboat European Trieste, Italy: After a wait of 6 hours from mid-morning through mid-afternoon, the lack of wind in suitable strength and stability today in the Gulf of Trieste prompted race managers to cancel racing for today at the 2022 ORC Sportboat European Championship hosted by Diporto Nautico Sistiana.

For the 21 participating teams representing five nations (Germany, Estonia, Great Britain, Slovenia and Italy), the program continued ashore with the prize-giving ceremony on the terrace with a beautiful panoramic view of the Gulf of Trieste at the new headquarters of the Diporto Nautica Sistiana.

For scoring the fleet was separated into 11 Division A boats and 10 Division B boats yet raced together with the same start and on the same race course. Six races were held: one 22-mile distance race and five shorter windward/leeward races, with the worst score for each team discarded.

Winner in Division A is Liam Pardy's carbon SB4 BEUGEN II from the Royal Southern Yacht Club in Hamble, England. On board with Pardy was helmsman John Pollard, a past Melges 24 world champion and recent SB20 Class silver medallist, and tactician James Grummett, a 49er dinghy sailor.

Division B was won by Estonian owner Ott Kikkas's SUGAR and his team on his Corsa 915, repeating last year's success in Istanbul, Turkey. The Pärnu Yacht Club's member benefited from the contribution of Olympians Sandro Montefusco at the helm and Matteo Ivaldi as tactician. Sugar's victory was clear-cut, with four first and two second places among six races sailed. sh AD

AEGEAN 600 2023 to be held between 7-15 July
AEGEAN 600 Dates have been set for the 3rd AEGEAN 600 edition.

The sea of myths and legends. The sea of Homer, Seferis and Elytis. The sea of painters and philosophers. The sea of sailors. 600 miles of sailing in this sea.

An offshore race designed by sailors for sailors. A race where the wind god, Aeolus, will make his own game to control sailors' seamanship. A race where the dolphins will accompany the boats to drive them faster to the finish. A race with enchanting sunrises and sunsets. A race where mythology rewards sport in a unique water track. All this and much more is the "Aegean 600". A non-stop race.

The Start is given by Homer's sanctuary, in front of the columns of Poseidon's temple, and with the wishes of the mythical god of the sea the boats sail for Milos, the home of the Venus of Milos, the prize of the Louvre de Paris. Surrounded by Cycladic white, they reach the scenic Caldera of Santorini, where the white of the houses blends with the volcanic rock creating unique contrasts and images. They continue towards the southernmost island of the Aegean Sea, Kassos, and leaving Karpathos on the left, the nativity island of Athena, and the residence of Prometheus, reach the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights in Rhodes. The course continues towards scenic Kos and Kalymnos, the island of sponge divers, while on the way they meet, besides dolphins, beautiful small islands, each with its own history.

The fleet sails next to the full color islands of Pharmakonisi and Agathonisi, and continue to Ikario Pelagos, a sea that offers strong sailing excitement. The sailors meet Patmos, the island of Saint John and the Cave of the Apocalypse, and head to cosmopolitan Mykonos and Delos, the birthplace of Apollo. The last islands of the route are Giaros and Kea. Slowly Finally the contestants face the Temple of Poseidon that will mark the end of the sailing adventure and the race.

Three In A Row For Charisma As Poons Is Crowned RC44 World Champion
While racing in 44Cup events usually goes to the wire, decided in the last few metres of the final race, this hasn't been the case this year when the dominant force has been Monaco-based Dutchman Nico Poons and his Charisma team.

Winning two bullets from two races on Friday put Charisma into the lead of this 44Cup Portorož World Championship, the pinnacle event of the season for the tweaky high performance one designs. Local Slovenian favourite Igor Lah and his Ceeref powered by Hrastnik 1860 was top scoring boat yesterday, but going into the final day still trailed Charisma by five points, albeit with a more comfortable eight point lead over third-placed Team Aqua.

The outlook for the final Sunday looked un-sailable with every forecast predicting sub-five knot breeze. Waiting out on the water Chris Bake was deserted on board Team Aqua, left to sail his RC44 singlehanded to much woops and hollering of encouragement from his crew in the support RIB. Several other brave singlehanded owner-drivers lined up against him in a mini-race.

Ultimately the wind did stabilise and, with anemometers barely rotating, a final race was started deep into the Bay of Piran, a stone's throw from Portoroz Marina.

The 2022 44Cup concludes in Muscat, Oman over 7-11 December.

Corentin Douguet takes the Class 40 European Trophy
Photo by Thierry Martinez / DRHeam cup 2022, thmartinez.com. Click on image for photo gallery.

Corentin Douguet The Class40 European Trophy has this year been awarded to Corentin Douguet, racing on his Lift v2 Queguiner – Innoveo. He takes over the title from 2021 winner Antoine Carpentier (Redman). Having scored podium finishes in every race he competed in this year (two victories and two second place finishes), Corentin Douguet wins the title for the first time on board his Class40 Queguiner – Innoveo in the face of an ever more competitive fleet. Axel Trehin (Project Rescue Ocean) finishes in second place. The pair of Matthieu Perraut / Vincent Lancien (Inter Invest) complete the podium.

The European Class40 season kicked off at the beginning of April with the 1000 milles des Sables, a qualifying race for the upcoming Route du Rhum destination Guadeloupe. This was Corentin Douguet's first race on his red and grey Lift v2 and his first victory, finishing ahead of Ian Lipinski (Credit Mutuel) and Axel Trehin.

Just over a month later, the hotly contested CIC Normandy Channel Race, a 1000 mile loop in the English Channel and Celtic Sea, was won by Ian Lipinski and Ambrogio Beccaria. Corentin Douguet, this time racing with Yoann Richomme, took second place, with the duo of Matthieu Perraut / Kevin Bloch finishing third.

The following week, it was the turn of Nicolas d'Estais (Happyvore) and his crew who won the Armen Race. In June, the SSE Round Ireland Yacht Race gave Andrea Fornaro (In Fluence) his first victory on the Class40 circuit.

The second solo race of the season, the Drheam Cup, saw 37 Class40s take on the 1000 mile course between Cherbourg and La Trinite sur Mer. This time around, it was Xavier Macaire (Groupe SNEF) who finished first, ahead of Corentin Douguet and Simon Koster (Banque du Leman).

In August, complicated weather made for challenging racing in the Sevenstar Round Britain & Ireland Race, with victory going to Irish sailor James Mac Hugh (Tquila).

The six different races to count thus far had provided six different winners!

18ft Skiffs Spring Championship, Race 1
Click on image for photo gallery.

18ft Skiffs The Shaw and Partners Financial Services team of Jim Colley, Charlie Wyatt and Tom Quigley, took out the opening race of the Australian 18 Footers League's 2022-23 season when it came from behind to win Race 1 of the 18ft Spring Championship, in a thrilling finish, on Sydney Harbour today.

Shaw and Partners won the 3-buoys style race by just 7s from Lazarus (Marcus Ashley-Jones, Keagan York and Joel Turner) with Yandoo (John Winning, Fang Warren and Josh Porebski) only a further 8s back in third place.

Burrawang-Young Henrys (Simon Nearn) finished in fourth place ahead of Smeg (Michael Coxon) and The Oak Double Bay-4 (Alex Marinelli).

A fleet of 15 boats faced the starter for the race, which was sailed in a 10-12knot Easterly breeze with the back marker Smeg leading the fleet on the first windward leg to the 3-buoys mark rounding in Rose Bay.

It was an excellent start to the season for the spectator fleet and more exciting racing is expected to come over the next 3-4 weeks as the new boats and last season's Giltinan champion Andoo join the fleet.

The 7-race Spring Championship has a cumulative, NO DROP pointscore, with the 2022-23 champion not being determined until after Race 7 on Sunday, November 20. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

How Jean Le Cam Has Set Up His New 2024 Vendee Globe Project
On Monday in his hometown of Port-la-Forêt, Jean Le Cam unveiled his 2024 Vendée Globe project. It will feature a brand new boat with daggerboards designed by David Raison and he will be backed by the Finistère department (region), Armor-lux and a group of partners for a budget totalling 4 million euros over 4 years. Tip & Shaft tells you how this project came about.

It was back on Thursday January 28, 2021 that Le Cam was welcomed as a hero back to Les Sables d'Olonne at the end of his fifth Vendée Globe as he took fourth place overall. Jean Le Cam immediately delivered his analysis of the race, considering in particular that "in the end, foiling boats, it's a lot of money and energy for not much." These remarks are at the core of the new four-year project which was unveiled on Monday in Port-la-Forêt where Jean Le Cam announced that he was starting a sixth Vendée Globe campaign with a new boat with daggerboards and with a scow hull shape. "What I'm doing now is what I said when I finished the Vendée," "King Jean" told Tip & Shaft.

This project actually began just a few weeks after the end of this Vendée Globe 2020 in particular taking on the impetus set in train by Eric Bellion who was ninth and first rookie on the previous one in 2016 and wanted to return in 2024 with more serious sporting ambitions. "When I went to see Jean, it was with the idea of creating a Vendée Globe team with several Imocas pooling resources." says Bellion. "At first, I thought of buying second-hand boats but I could clearly see that the market was starting to close down so with Jean we started to talk about a simple boat, at a lower cost, but capable of competing with the best."

In the spring of 2021 the two men agreed on the project with the initial ambition of building three or four boats. They went in search of a designer and set their sights on a newcomer to the Imoca class, David Raison. "We went to see Sam Manuard who was busy with Charal, Guillaume Verdier was not interested. We also spoke with VPLP and finally, we chose David Raison, first because he is a designer who had the audacity to make the first scow Mini and also because he is very diligent" explains Jean Le Cam.
