44Cup World Championship
Official racing starts at the 44Cup Portoroz World Championship in Slovenia Thursday; on Wednesday the eight boat fleet enjoyed some warm-up competition.

Wedged between Italy and Croatia, Slovenia has a coastline measuring just 10 miles across, but they pack it in. This week the 44Cup fleet is based in Portoroz Marina, by the peninsula upon which is perched the ancient town of Piran, today a major tourist attraction. Six miles up the coast, Koper is a medieval town doubling as Slovenia’s commercial port complete with a new container terminal. Among others, Port of Koper is a key supporter of the 44Cup Portoroz World Championship.

While several early events were held here (the RC44 was designed by Slovenian Andrej Justin in conjunction with Russell Coutts), this is the third time it has visited in the high performance one design’s recent history, the last being in 2021 when it opened the season. Significantly it is the first time Slovenia has hosted the class’ World Championship.

A significant development here is the debut of the first new RC44 in eight years. Swiss sailor Christian Zuerrer’s new Black Star Sailing Team, hull #27 was launched a month ago in the UK. This week her shore team has been busy commissioning her.

This 44Cup Portoroz World Championship will also be the first time since the pandemic that the class has returned to having its guest program.

Ocean Fifty : an added dimension
Always spectacular, always fast, always demanding, the Ocean Fifty are growing in competitiveness and reputation and are one of the most evenly matched divisions of the upcoming Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe 2022. The eight skippers entered look set to have an engaging race across the Atlantic which could well see the final outcome decided on the last miles around Guadeloupe. They should take around ten days for the course from Saint Malo to Pointe-a- Pitre.

Since the launch of the Pro Sailing Tour two years ago interest in the Ocean Fifty class has grown. The boats can be sailed fully crewed, double handed or solo. High speeds are relatively easily achieved but the element of risk is always there and the skippers have to be extra vigilant all the time.

Four years ago, the top three arrived with the space of one day: Armel Tripon (1st, currently skipper of Les P'tits Doudous), 2014 winner Erwan Le Roux (2nd, currently on Koesio) and Thibaut Vauchel -Camus (3rd, Solidaires en peloton - ARSEP). All the three skippers will on the starting line again and will do everything to repeat their podium successes. But competition looks fierce. The winner of the last Transat Jacques Vabre, Sebastien Rogue (Primonial) will also be racing across the Atlantic as will the two skippers who won the first two editions of the Pro Sailing Tour, Sam Goodchild (Leyton) and Quentin Vlamynck (Arkema).

Gilles Lamire (Groupe GCA-1001 Sourires) already has four Route du Rhum races under his belt whilst eric Peron (Komilfo) has been discovering the circuit this year. Both will be serious contenders.

More than 100 yachts entered for 2022 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race
More than 100 yachts are set to compete in the 2022 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, with just over two weeks still to go until entries close.

The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, organiser of the race, has welcomed entrants from around Australia and across the world, with a high calibre and diverse fleet assembling for the historic race.

Boats range from the smallest boat in the line-up, Sean Langman’s 9-metre Ranger, Maluka, skippered by his son Peter, to the four 100-foot maxis – Andoo Comanche, Black Jack, Hamilton Island Wild Oats and LawConnect.

With 18 two-handed boats already entered, more than the total number of two-handed starters in the 2021 race, the 77th edition of the Rolex Sydney Hobart promises to deliver plenty of entertainment.

The 100-boat milestone was reached as Tony Levett entered his Sydney 38, TSA Management (previously known as Eleni).

Levett has campaigned TSA Management in every Rolex Sydney Hobart since 2004, barring the 2016 race, winning the Sydney 38 division in 2010 and 2011.

The boat was one of many to succumb to the conditions in the 2021 race and Levett is eager to get back on the race track.

Tropical storm steals the wind at the ILCA 6 World Championships

ILCA 6 World Championships Tropical Storm Karl, which has formed in the Gulf of Mexico, played havoc on Galveston Bay for day two of the ILCA 6 World Championship. It was a waiting game in Kemah, Texas, with just one race completed in the late afternoon.

After a three-hour on-shore postponement, the fleet was sent out onto the racecourse with high hopes of sneaking in some racing. Unfortunately, due to the instability of the weather pattern, the breeze did not build as expected. Finally, after a two-hour wait on the water, a race was underway in fickle conditions.

A light southerly had pushed in when the sailors finally got on the water today. However, not only was this predominant wind unstable, but large storm clouds were building into the afternoon due to the high humidity levels in the region.

It was a mixed day for the Australian sailors battling it out in Texas. The majority of the squad held on to their overall positions, with most finishing in the top twenty in today’s race. Frustratingly for Western Australian Zoe Thomson despite a rocketing start she ended up on the wrong side of the fleet for a large right-hand shift that essentially decided the race.

The storm is expected to still be in the area and could interfere with the weather patterns again tomorrow. However, forecasts are hard to predict in this instance, and the Australian coach shared, “Best to just look at in the morning and figure out what we are in store for.”

Smeg 18ft Skiff Racing - Sponsorship with style
Click on image for photo gallery.

18ft Skiff When the Michael Coxon-led Smeg 18ft Skiff Racing Team takes to Sydney Harbour for the Australian 18 Footers League’s 2022-23 season it will become the 26th consecutive season of boat sponsorship by the “technology with style” company with the League.

Joining Coxon in the Smeg team are Ricky Bridge, on the sheet, and Tom Anderson, who is making a return to the 18s, in the bow.

Smeg Australia’s reputation for high quality whitegoods products has been matched throughout its 26 years record of achievement on the harbour, and the company has been represented by some of the greatest 18 footer skippers in the 130-year history of the iconic Australian sport.

Smeg-sponsored 18 footer teams have won five JJ Giltinan world Championships, two Australian Championships and three NSW Championship titles.

The Smeg Australia company’s first sponsorship in the 18s began in the 1996-97 season when the Trevor Barnabas-led team raced a skiff named Omega Smeg-2UE.

Trevor had previously won two JJ Giltinan world Championship titles, with Chesty Bond skiffs in 1987 and 1988, before going into ‘retirement’ to support his son Trent, who was beginning to move through the junior sailing classes.

The Smeg-Barnabas team was an instant success when the combination won both the JJ Giltinan world Championship and NSW Championship in 1997 and 1998.

The team actually had two Giltinan world Championship wins in 1997 when, for the only time in the championship’s history, two regattas were raced in the one calendar year, when the second regatta was sailed in Italy. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

The Hatman Story Competition Prize worth €350

WHAT Over the years of exhibiting at various international shows I gave out Hatmen as freebies. The idea came out of losing hats while sailing, we sailors are smart and use a piece of cord to tie the hat to the jacket, we don't trust the crocodile clip! So then I though how can I make it look more attractive and so I created a cord with personality: A body, a head, eyes and the cord can be fluffed to create hair! - The Hatman ! All handmade here at home with assistance from the my family.

I think I gave away about 3000 and now I am wondering what happened to them? Did they end up as book marks?. Did they go sailing? Tell me your Hatman story and I will give a price for the best one. Contact Me

The Prize will be an ORIGINS 3D chart of your location including delivery to anywhere in the world, value €350. -- Bobbie Nash
