Monaco In a few days, 90 international teams from 23 nations will be descending on the Principality for the J/70 World Championship being organised for the first time by Yacht Club de Monaco. Designed by Alan Johnstone and first built in 2012, the J/70 is one of the most popular one design classes among sailors.

The event is being held in partnership with the Monegasque Sailing Federation, FxPro, Xerjoff and technical sports clothing brand Slam which is supplying garments for all crew members on the podium, as it has been doing for the Primo Cup for over 30 years.

Among the 90 crews are World Champions in this class, such as Luis Bugallo, Marshall King, Ian Wilson, Peter Duncan, Jud Smith and Paul Ward. Alongside are stars on the European scene set to put up a fight with the likes of Italian Luca Domenici, the Dane José María Torcida Seghers and British sailor Jonathan Calascione.

Most teams comprise well-known professionals, men like Pietro Sibello in charge of the mainsail on the Italian Challenger Luna Rossa at the last America's Cup. Anglo-Saxons will be out in force with a dozen American boats and no fewer than seven British teams.

Monaco can expect to find 400 experienced sailors roaming the quays, including YCM's Vice-President and founder of Team Malizia, Pierre Casiraghi who will be sailing alongside Jean-Baptiste Bernaz, current ILCA 7 World Champion.

After registrations and rating inspections, crews will attend the opening ceremony on Monday 17th October, a highlight that officially kicks off five days of top level racing.

Around The World: A New Attempt By The Maxi Trimaran Sails Of Change

Sails Of Change Yann Guichard, Dona Bertarelli and nine other sailors will make up the crew of 'Sails of Change' for their next attempt on the Jules Verne Trophy, an award for the fastest non-stop and unassisted circumnavigation of the world. Several years of hard work will culminate in this ultimate sporting challenge. The crew also aims to raise awareness of the need to preserve ocean and land ecosystems. From October 24th, the team will be on standby, ready to set sail on a new adventure.

The objective is to win the Jules Verne Trophy by beating the round-the-world record held since 2017: 40 days, 23 hours, and 30 minutes. "It's the ultimate sporting goal, an extraordinary time to beat, that has been halved in the space of 30 years", said skipper Yann Guichard.

Once standby begins, the maxi trimaran, based at La Trinité-sur-Mer, will be ready to set off for Brest at the first favourable weather window.

Joining Yann Guichard and Dona Bertarelli, the onboard reporter, will be nine crew members. "Some have been part of the project for years and others have joined us this year," said the skipper. "We have an experienced team who enjoy competing and who are ocean enthusiasts. We share the same appreciation of effort and solidarity".

AEGEAN 600 2023 to be held between 7-15 July
AEGEAN 600 Dates have been set for the 3rd AEGEAN 600 edition.

The sea of myths and legends. The sea of Homer, Seferis and Elytis. The sea of painters and philosophers. The sea of sailors. 600 miles of sailing in this sea.

An offshore race designed by sailors for sailors. A race where the wind god, Aeolus, will make his own game to control sailors' seamanship. A race where the dolphins will accompany the boats to drive them faster to the finish. A race with enchanting sunrises and sunsets. A race where mythology rewards sport in a unique water track. All this and much more is the "Aegean 600". A non-stop race.

The Start is given by Homer's sanctuary, in front of the columns of Poseidon's temple, and with the wishes of the mythical god of the sea the boats sail for Milos, the home of the Venus of Milos, the prize of the Louvre de Paris. Surrounded by Cycladic white, they reach the scenic Caldera of Santorini, where the white of the houses blends with the volcanic rock creating unique contrasts and images. They continue towards the southernmost island of the Aegean Sea, Kassos, and leaving Karpathos on the left, the nativity island of Athena, and the residence of Prometheus, reach the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights in Rhodes. The course continues towards scenic Kos and Kalymnos, the island of sponge divers, while on the way they meet, besides dolphins, beautiful small islands, each with its own history.

The fleet sails next to the full color islands of Pharmakonisi and Agathonisi, and continue to Ikario Pelagos, a sea that offers strong sailing excitement. The sailors meet Patmos, the island of Saint John and the Cave of the Apocalypse, and head to cosmopolitan Mykonos and Delos, the birthplace of Apollo. The last islands of the route are Giaros and Kea. Slowly Finally the contestants face the Temple of Poseidon that will mark the end of the sailing adventure and the race.

ORC Sportboat European Championship starts Wednesday
After two days of preparation and measurement, racing is ready to start tomorrow for the 2022 ORC Sportboat European Championship being held at the Diporto Nautico Sistiana.

Twenty-one teams from six nations have come to compete in two classes, A and B. They represent mostly popular series-built designs that are raced throughout Europe. The complete scratch sheet of entries here.

There are a couple of relatively new designs from designer Matteo Polli featured here in Sistiana this week.

One is Ott Kikkas's Corsa 915 SUGAR from Estonia built by Magnani in Italy and raced by members of his 2022 ORC Class C World Championship team.

The other is Fabio Bignolini's new Eco Racer 25 ECORACER BY NMG EUROPE (shown above) built by Northern Light Composites, also in Italy. This innovative design is the first fully recyclable flax fiber boat in the world. Bignolini and team made a strong impression by winning today's practice race, but only by 3 seconds in corrected time over Ugo Guarnieri's veteran Delta 84 CHARDONNAY, a past champion at this event.

The Harken Press Briefing: At The Front of the United States Sailboat Show
Harken The more things change at Harken, the more we hope they feel the same. That's what we work to balance. How do we grow and improve without losing sight of the most important reasons two brothers became the much larger 'we' in the first place?

Thursday morning October 13, at 10 a.m., as you hear the opening bell at the United States Sailboat Show, Harken will be back in front of that red tent, (land spaces 17 and 18) doing our 'State of Harken' press briefing. There will be information on a new Harken product and a new initiative. There will be Peter Harken. It will all be fantastically familiar, brief, and if nothing changes…fun! We very much hope you'll join us.

Tom Dolan and crew fifth in Beneteau Figaro 3 French National Championships
Irish solo offshore sailor Tom Dolan and his French crew sailed to fifth place in the Figaro Beneteau 3 French National Championships which were raced over the weekend off Lorient, Brittany. Racing Dolan's Smurfit Kappa-Kingspan the crew were lying in second place overall going into the last race for the 18 boat fleet but a tenth dropped them down the fleet.

Dolan called up French former Match Race world champion Bertrand Pace - a multiple America's Cup sailor and coach who is one of the coaches for his solo offshore training programme in Lorient - to steer for the crewed championships, with Gildas Mahé sailing as tactician. Benoit Hantzberg and Dolan trimmed and did the pit.

"We were just a little disappointed to have been in the frame near the end then finishing up with that one bad result. But in this fleet fifth is fine. Inshore, windward-leeward racing is not really my forte but it was great to sail with Bertrand and learn a lot which I can put to good use in the future." Enthused Dolan.

The annual championships were contested over eight windward-leeward races and a 25 mile short inshore around the Groix island. "It was a lot of fun to do and a nice way to end the racing season." Concluded Dolan who will now step in to help with the on shore weather routing for a giant French Ultime on the upcoming Route du Rhum. -- Sabina Mollart Rogerson

Congratulations to Fred Duthil and his crew for the victory, as well as to all the riders involved.

PlanetSail: Oyster 495 On Test - 3 Days , 200 miles
She might be the smallest in Oyster's range but there has a been a great deal of fuss made about this boat. She even has her own documentary series! So, to find out what she's really like, we set off on a 200mile, 3 day test to see what she's be like on a typical long weekend cruise.

Not only was it great to settle into finding out what made her tick without the pressure of a tight deadline, but we got to cruise some of my favourite areas in the Channel Islands.

How To Sail The AC40
The first AC40 has been put through a rigorous but ultimately satisfactory commissioning process by Emirates Team New Zealand over the past few weeks since it’s maiden sail on the 21st of September.

It has the America’s Cup and wider sailing community tuned in and eager to understand its design and performance when considering its core purpose to provide the pathway into the America’s Cup for the next generation of Women and Youth sailors. It is these sailors who have no doubt been most intrigued as they can now begin to visualise themselves onboard racing the exciting new foiling monohulls.

But where do you start in learning how to sail such a cutting-edge and high-performance yacht?

A good place is this ‘How to sail the AC40’, video with Emirates Team New Zealand Helmsman Nathan Outteridge.

With the second AC40 already on its way to Ineos Brittania and the third only weeks away from heading out the door, the fleet is growing steadily.

Rolex Middle Sea Race
With the start of the 2022 Rolex Middle Sea Race just three weeks away, another fascinating contest beckons. The entry list currently stands at 120 yachts representing 25 countries. While Covid is no longer so much in the headlines, there are plenty of other uncertainties in the world but, yet again, the 606 nautical mile classic is proving its global appeal. Starting from Grand Harbour, Valletta on Saturday 22 October to the crash of cannon fire from the Saluting Battery high above the water, the stage looks set for another cracking race.

The range and breadth of the fleet has been well-rehearsed in previous releases. Here are just a few of the facts: 112 monohulls, eight multihulls (including five 21 metre racing trimarans), largest yacht: Leopard 3 at 30.48m, smallest yacht: Cuorematto at 9.5m, most entries from Italy with 27 followed by France with 19, furthest travelled entries: High Five from New Zealand and Maverick from Australia; and 11 double handed entries including two-time Olympic medallist Jonathan McKee on Red Ruby from the USA. Multihulls

An almighty clash is expected between Giovanni Soldini's Maserati Multi 70, former line honours winner; Riccardo Pavoncelli's Mana, former MOCRA handicap winner skippered by speed sailing record holder Paul Larsen; Zoulou (FRA) skippered by Erik Maris, currently leading the owner-driver standings on the GC32 circuit and who mixes sailing with endurance motorsport; Frank Slootman's American entry Snowflake and Cosimo Malesci's Axciss.

As one would expect, the monohull fleet is a true mix of professional and Corinthian crews, cruiser/racers and all out fliers, those with the ambition to win the Rolex Middle Sea Race trophy on IRC Time Correction and those just participating for the challenge. Marton Josza's Reichel/Pugh designed 18.28m Wild Joe, is one of the more experienced crews. "The Wild Joe Sailing Team is competing in the race for the eleventh time," according to Josza. "The same Hungarian crew has also completed the distance twice in a different, smaller boat, so this is the 14th Rolex Middle Sea Race we are starting with this crew."

The 43rd edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race will start on Saturday, 22 October 2022. It will be streamed live on both Facebook and YouTube, and broadcast on TVM (Malta), from 10.30 CEST.
