Barcolana54 Trieste, Italy: A dream come true. The Barcolana Cup is flying to the United States, to the New York Yacht Club, the same club that has held the America's Cup for 132 years. American entrepreneur and philanthropist Wendy Schmidt and her Deep Blue have won the 54th edition of the Barcolana presented by Generali, which was held in Trieste yesterday on a perfect sunny day, with the Bora and gusts of wind up to 25 knots. 1614 boats took part in the race, with the Amerigo Vespucci ship symbolically kicking off the regatta. Wendy Schmidt has also won the 'Women in Sailing' Generali Cup, awarded to the first female skipper in a mixed crew, and it is the first time that a single team has won both cups.

Deep Blue crossed the finish line in 57'47", beating Furio Benussi's Arca by 59 seconds. Portopiccolo Prosecco Doc came in third, with Mitja Kosmina at the helm.

* The two protests lodged by EWOL - Way of Life against Arca and Furio Benussi have been rejected. The first one referred to the sail left at sea during the first part of the Barcolana 54 presented by Generali, while the second one concerned rule 69 (serious misconduct).

As far as the first protest is concerned, the International Jury declared the protest invalid, since the protestor had not informed Arca of its intentions at the first reasonable opportunity, as set out in the Racing Rules of Sailing. Therefore, judges did not further analyse the protest, which referred to rule 41 and rule 47 (competitors should not put trash in the water nor receive help from any outside source during the regatta). As far as the protest referring to rule 69 (serious misconduct) is concerned, the International Jury claimed to have insufficient evidence to sanction the behaviour of skipper Furio Benussi towards a member of the Ewol team.

Therefore, Arca remains in second place, leaving the Barcolana's classification unchanged.

Huge IMOCA Fleet for the Route du Rhum
There have never been so many IMOCA class entries in the La Route du Rhum – Destination Guadeloupe in the IMOCA class. With 37 boats set to take the start line, there are certainly more contenders for the podium than in any previous edition and there is strength and depth all the way through the field.

For the top IMOCA skippers, winning this mythical solo race is the obvious goal. It is very much a extended sprint. It is contested at a unique, high level intensity with very little time to rest. The transition between what is often a tough Bay of Biscay crossing to the foot to the floor, relentless high speeds of the trade winds is often key. For many the race lasts around two weeks whilst the course record for the IMOCAs was set in 2014 by François Gabart, then 31 years old, who completed the race in 12 days, 4 hours and 38 minutes.

The 2018 edition saw a dramatic finish with Paul Meilhat taking the IMOCA title. He returns with a new boat in the colours of his new sponsors Biotherm. His is just one of seven new IMOCAs which have been launched over the last four months. There are four pairs of sisterships now. Maxime Sorel V and B – Monbana – Mayenne is a Verdier sistership of the current APIVIA. Meilhat's Biotherm is a Verdier sistership of LinkedOut. Yannick Bestaven's new Maitre Coq V is a Verdier sistership of 11th Hour Racing-Mâlama and Sam Davies' new Initiatives Coeur 4 is sistership of the Sam Manuard designed L'Occitane en Provence.

Three boats come from completely new moulds. There is the Verdier Holcim – PRB by Kevin Escoffier, Manuard's Charal2 by Jeremie Beyou and the VPLP designed new Malizia – Sea Explorer of Boris Herrmann ). All these new boats are expected to be on starting line on November 6 off Saint-Malo.

18 Footer The 2022-23 Sydney 18 footer racing season starts next Sunday (October 16) when the Australian 18 Footers League conducts Race 1 of the annual Spring Championship on Sydney Harbour.

A fleet of up to 18 boats will line up for the opening race which will be raced over a 3-buoys course with all teams having a maximum opportunity under the handicapping system being used in the seven-race series.

Racing in the Spring Championship will then continue each Sunday with points accumulating over each race to determine the winner after Race 7 on November 20.

New boats and new team combinations will join last season's established teams to provide the usual early season action for the spectator fleet and patrons on board the League' spectator ferry.

The 2021-22 Spring champion The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines team members have retired from the 18s this season and are replaced by a young crew of Alex Marinelli, Matt Doyle and Darcy McCracken

One of the pre-series favourites for the series is John 'Woody' Winning and his Yandoo team of Fang Warren and Mike Kennedy, who were narrowly beaten in last season's club point score. The experienced team will compete in the same skiff, which performed so consistently in the 2021-22 season.

Other established teams which are expected to produce good early season form include Smeg (Michael Coxon), Lazarus (Marcus Ashley-Jones), Burrawang-Young Henrys (Simon Nearn), Fisher & Paykel (Jordan Girdis), Finport Finance (Keagan York), The Kitchen Maker (Lachlan Steel), Noakes Youth (Tom Cunich) and 18 Footers Bar & Restaurant (Pedro Vozone). -- Frank Quealey Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

Roland Jourdain: "The Route Du Rhum Is The Cornerstone Of My Career"
At 58, Roland Jourdain will start his fourth Route du Rhum in a month's time. He is a double winner in Imoca (2006 and 2010). He now devotes most of his time to his company Kaïros and to the Explore fund but is setting off this time in the Rhum Multi class on the We Explore catamaran, a variation of the Outremer 5X, built partly in flax fibre. Tip & Shaft spoke with "Bilou".

Have you had the time to prepare for this Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe?
No, I haven't prepared like I was able to do in previous editions. We only launched the boat at the beginning of June. We sailed a bit in the Mediterranean, then I brought her back. She has 4,000 miles on the clock - that's not a lot - but everyone is struggling with their own situations! But really that doesn't bother me so much as this is a bit like the entire history of the project, in the sense that it is centered around the message of doing things differently, about limiting the environmental impact, whereas in the Route du Rhum the objective is to go faster than the others. So, if you like, there are several different Bilous in my head right now!

For you, this Route du Rhum is more a technological challenge than a sporting one?
Basically, yes. But personally it makes me very happy to compete in another Route du Rhum, but the objective is to take advantage of the size and scale of the event to shed light on We Explore, to ask questions. Originally, we had sworn with Sophie [Verceletto, co-founder of Kairos and the Explore fund] that we would never use Explore, a general public cause and interest group for which we are volunteers, to fulfil my personal desires. But in the end we finally let ourselves be convinced by the patrons and partners who support the fund.

Wagner Cup Dragon Class
Photo by Elena Giolai. Click on image for photo gallery.

Wagner Cup Dragon Lake Garda, Italy: A very tight finish for the 18th edition of the Wagner Cup-9th Bertamini Trophy, an event reserved for the splendid Dragon class: a revolution in the general classification and therefore the final podium, after the last three of the seven races held from Thursday to Saturday.

Almost summery temperatures on Garda Trentino and medium-light winds characterised the event, which on Saturday ended with the three races held early in the morning in a northerly wind of 12-14 knots. It was a very exciting final because the first four finished within two points, with equal scores between the first and second crews (27 points), and between the third and fourth crews (29 points).

In the end, the winner was the one who had not only a Dragoon World Championship title on board, won just this year in Germany, but also the Star Class title: Englishman Klaus Diederichs, with his crew made up of Italian Diego Negri (two-time Star world champion) and Jamei Lea, changed gear in the last three races, moving up from eighth overall to first overall by posting a 1-4-1, which enabled a wonderful comeback. T

The Portuguese Zanchel Michael, crewed by Joao Rosa and Diogo Pereira, also made a leap forward in the standings to second place, moving up three places.European champions, Swiss Wolf Waschkuhn (with Nankin-Vidinha on board, tied on points with the Hungarians Kisszolayemi-Karck-Denes, first in the sixth and penultimate race, fell to third place.

2022 RS Venture Connect World Championship Event Entries At Capacity

RS Venture Connect In September 2021, RS Sailing and Oman Sail agreed to host the RS Venture Connect Worlds in November of the following year. Deciding where and when to host a sailing event is always a challenge, especially when considering distance and expense for participants, combined with the fact that Para Sailing represents the most niche category of sailor within the sport.

At the time of the agreement, there was no guarantee that enough teams would sign up for the event to be run. However, both organisations believed that the Oman Sail venue in Mussanah would be accessible for international travel, providing a beautiful location for the participants to not just sail at but a place where those accompanying them can relax and unwind. Fast forward 12 months, and the event registration website says, "Due to capacity, the event entry is now closed." From November 23rd to 27th, 36 teams representing 19 nations will come together to sail in the RS Venture Connect, a current World Sailing Paralympic sailboat class which features an award-winning 'Seated Control System' the benefit of both the helm and their crew.

For more information on the event, including how you can keep up to date with all of the on and off-water action, visit the RS Venture Connect Facebook page.

Cup Spy: Defenders put on Game Face now AC40-OD commissioning completed
The America's Cup Defenders, Emirates Team New Zealand say they have completed the commissioning of the AC40 in one design mode.

The team say they will now morph their first AC40 into a LEQ12, or test boat, and will start testing new components as part of their design program for the 2024 America's Cup defence in Barcelona, Spain.

The Kiwis have stolen a march on the Challengers, through being the first to start on the water design testing. They have gained a two-month jump given that the Defenders don't have to start America's Cup competition until eight weeks after the Challengers, who start their Challenger Selection Series probably in mid-August 2024. Although no dates have been announced for the America's Cup Match it is expected to start two months later in mid-October 2024.

The teams were allowed to start test sailing three weeks ago on September 17, 2022. Alinghi Red Bull Racing, being a team that did not sail in the 2021 America's Cup was permitted to start sailing earlier in their first generation AC75 on July 17, 2022 for a maximum of 20 sailing days, using eight days in that allowance.

Today's final commissioning session took place in 6-12kt SW (offshore) breeze, the first reasonable sailing conditions of a week, in which New Zealand has been subject to the coldest weather for over 50 years, with heavy snowfalls in the lower North Island and South Islands. -- Richard Gladwell
