M32 Worlds Day 1 - Five Races Five Winners
The first day of four in the championship gave a good taste of the excitement ahead. Five different winners in the five races and 1 point separating the top 4 teams tells the story of an incredible close fleet.

Tied at the top of the leaderboard is defending World Champions Convexity with skipper Don Wilson and Extreme2 with Dan Cheresh immediately followed by Pieter Taselaar's Dutch team, Bilksem, and PJ Postma's China One Ningbo a point behind.

At the end of the day, Pieter Jan Postma, helm of the Chinese team, praises the good performance of his team "today we had a new guy on board, so on our boat it was a bit of getting used to each other and I'm really happy how all the team performed, it's good to be in the mix" and highlights the fierce competition "We are all tight together, the top 4 boats, so there's a lot to play for. It's tight racing with this bigger fleet".

Friday 5 more races are scheduled, with conditions similar to today, promising another great and close sailing day.

Barnacles are back! 23,000 miles to go as GGR hits the equator on a voyage of attrition
Starting with a rough exit of the bay of Biscay, testing sailors and boats to the limit, with Damien Guillou's (FRA) PRB returning for repairs, Edward Walentynowicz (CAN) pulling the plug on his GGR campaign, Guy deBoer (USA) grounded in Fuerteventura and Mark Sinclair (AUS) mooring his Coconut in Lanzarote for good. Now thirteen sailors battle the doldrums seeking tradewinds and a fast passage south.

Entrants can only call Race Control, not family and friends. Some demoralised GGR sailors called to chat, share their frustrations and trump the isolation after a month alone. A few are questioning why they are there, others if it is even possible to continue with severe lack of family contact.

The entrants, who felt overloaded with public and media attention in the weeks leading to the start, now welcome the weekly safety and media calls as a change in their routine and only chance to chat to the outside world.

One sailor not suffering mentally or physically, and working hard to get back at the front is French favourite Damien Guillou, who has been gaining places ever since he left Les Sables d'Olonne with a 6-day delay after repairing and reinforcing his windvane. He has gone from last to 6th, leading the mid-fleet pack earlier this week, although the doldrums make the ranking change several times a day.

Many wonder if the obvious speed, talent, hard work and determination of the Finisterian sailor that enabled his comeback will be enough to catch-up on Simon and the leaders. Michel Desjoyeaux who won his second victory on the 2008-2009 Vendée Globe, after going back to Les Sables d'Olonne, 200 miles after the start, for repairs and leaving with a 40-hour delay, gave us a hint on twitter earlier this week : "He is doing a "Desjoyeaux', only better! If you don't mind me saying it!"

2022 GGR entrants to date:
1. Abhilash Tomy (43) / India / Rustler 36
2. Arnaud Gaist (50) / France / BARBICAN 33 MKII (long keel version)
3. Damien Guillou (39) / France / Rustler 36
4. Elliott Smith (27) / USA / Gale Force 34
5. Ertan Beskardes (60) / UK / Rustler 36
6. Guy Waites (54) / UK / Tradewind 35
7. Ian Herbert Jones (52) / UK / Tradewind 35
8. Jeremy Bagshaw (59) / South Africa / OE32
9. Kirsten Neuschäfer (39) / South Africa / Cape George 36
10. Michael Guggenberger (44) / Austria / Biscay 36
11. Pat Lawless (66) / Ireland / Saga 36
12. Simon Curwen (63) / UK / Biscay 36

Greystones' Pam Lee At Front Of Fleet In French Classics
Photo by James Robinson Taylor, www.jrtphoto.comClick on image to enlarge.

Greystones Multi-talented offshore sailor Pamela Lee of Greystones has been at the heart of it in the annual late season Classics racing on the French Riviera, crewing on Richard Matthews' 1898-vintage 48ft William Fife-designed-and-built cutter Kismet in a notably successful programme which included winning the Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy 2022 at St Tropez.

Richard Matthews of West Mersea, a familiar figure at Cork Week over the years, is renowned for his association with the Oyster range of performance cruisers, and a succession of top offshore racers under the Oystercatcher name. He first acquired a taste for classic restoration when he brought his late father's Holman-designed Stella OD back to life. She was one of the first of the successful class when new, and he still sails her - he raced the Stella at Ramsgate Week in Kent in 2022.

Also in the Matthews stable afloat is the America's Cup-targeted 12 Metre Crusader, but when he decided to go down the pure classics restoration route, it was with a boat that was a familiar sight in the neighbourhood. The originally hundred per cent Fife cutter Kismet was in a local mudberth, and had been used as a houseboat - with a large "living shed" on deck - for sixty years. -- WM Nixon

Harken New Zealand Match Racing Championship
The best of New Zealand's match racing sailors are ready to do battle over 4 days of world-class on water duels for the Harken New Zealand Match Racing Championship, from the 6th to 9th of October on Auckland's Waitemata Harbour.

The Harken NZMRC kickstarts the 2022-23 domestic sailing season and is always a highly coveted prize with plenty of Kiwi sailing royalty lifting the title during their careers - including Dean Barker, 3 time World Match Racing Champion Chris Dickson, Olympic gold medallist Rod Davis, Olympians Josh Junior and Gavin Brady, AC36 commentator Chris Steele and current Canada SailGP sailors Phil Robertson and Graeme Sutherland. the Pacific Islands - but can't wait to renew local rivalries.

Both of last year's finalists return after a nail-biting 5 race final, with reigning champion Nick Egnot-Johnson's KNOTS Racing beating RNZYS Sailing Manager Reuben Corbett in what came down to a matter of inches and a better tack on the finish line by Egnot-Johnson's crew.

World Sailing's number 3 ranked team, and 2019 Governor's Cup and Match Race Germany winners KNOTS Racing re-emerged onto the world scene at this year's Congressional Cup field earlier this April. Nick will be looking to win his 3rd NZMRC on his return to home water after his KNOTS team was part of a Saudi Arabian sailing development mission.

The club of five Class 40 skippers taking on the Rhum
Five of the sailors competing in the upcoming Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe are based in the Mediterranean, between Sete and Marseille. Kito de Pavant (HBF - Reforest'Action), Mathieu Claveau (Prendre la Mer, Agir pour la Foret), Jean-Pierre Balmes (FullSave), Mikael Mergui (Centrakor) and Laurent Camprubi (Glaces Romanes) have been hard at work preparing their Class40 campaigns with a packed schedule of time on the water, training and competing in well-known races. The newly launched championship for the region, the Class40 Mediterranean Trophy, has brought good sailors together, boosted offshore racing in the region, and enabled teams to combine resources and thoroughly prepare for the challenge ahead.

While offshore racing is highly developed in Brittany, the Mediterranean-based sailors have been putting in a lot of effort to develop the discipline in their part of the world. "This is where we live, work, and play, so it is logical for us to be based here", Marseille-based Mathieu Claveau emphasises.

The sailors all cite the benefit of more time spent training and racing in the Mediterranean, where conditions are far more variable and very different from those found in the Atlantic.

Geographic proximity, the need to be organised to compete in the big offshore races and the fact that they compete against each other regularly has strengthened the bond between these five sailors.

Sarimanok - The Reincarnation of a Goddess
While Researching Last Week's Article About The Dhows That Traded From The Arabian Gulf To The East African Coast, We Came Across This Wonderful Short Video Made In 1986.

I grew up reading Thor Heyerdahl's "Kon-Tiki", (no less exciting for his theories being proven to be rubbish!) and Tim Severin's "The Brendan Voyage" which set out to prove that an Irish monk in the sixth century might have sailed all the way across the Atlantic in a small leather skinned currach, thus beating Columbus to the New World by almost a thousand years. David Lewis' journeys also fall into this genre.

Being an avid reader and watcher of experimental expeditions, I'm surprised I had never heard of the Voyage of the Sarimanok.

In 1985, Bob Hobman and a crew of six sailors set out to cross the Indian Ocean, from Bali to Madagascar on a bamboo trimaran, to follow the direct east-west Indian Ocean track which the first Austronesian settlers of Madagascar may have taken.

The Sarimanok was entirely made of vegetal elements, not a single nail was used, and was modelled upon the Filipino Vinta. T

Raceboats Only Pata Negra - Marc Lombard IRC 46. Located in Caribbean and UK 2023

Pata Negra is a prototype IRC 46 design by Marc Lombard and built by CSC Composites in 2016. Marc Lombard is renowned for designing some great offshore racing yachts, including IMOCA 60ʼs, Class 40ʼs and Mini’s. Pata Negra has a proven track record of podium results when racing offshore or around the cans. With an Axon carbon rig, asymmetric sail plan and continual investment in the boat, she is a fantastic yacht that ticks a lot of boxes. Pata Negra came 1st in class at Les Voiles de Saint Barth & 2nd in class in Antigua Sailing Week 2022.

Her twin rudders give her phenomenal control off the wind, her foredeck layout with hank on forestay, inner forestay and bow sprit gives crews flexibility on sail plan. Pata Negra isnʼt simply a great offshore boat she can also perform inshore; her carbon rig and asymmetric sail allow her to perform on any race course, with 10 sea berths make Pata Negra an exciting package that ticks a lot of boxes.

Pata Negra is available for whole boat race charter with an owners rep/ skipper to help you get the most from the boat and the regatta.
