Capricorno fights back at Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez
Once again, the race committee of Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez showed the patience of Job as they and the 46 maxi yachts competing waited for the wind to defy the forecast and fill in on the Golfe de Saint-Tropez. Finally a light easterly from 070° arrived and, after almost an hour and a half's wait, racing got under way for the maxi fleet's four classes, ranging in size from the Swedish-owned Swan 115 Yasi to 60 footers from manufacturers such as CNB, Nautor's Swan and Mylius.

Week two of Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, run by the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez with assistance from the International Maxi Association (IMA), is the final event of the IMA's 2022 Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge. Leader going into this event was Alessandro Del Bono's Capricorno. The 27-year-old ILC maxi further asserted her position in this today by winning the Maxi 3 class ahead of Terry Hui's Wally 77 Lyra, a past winner here.

Showing that their win yesterday wasn't an aberration, Walter Pizzoli's Swan 601 Les Amis was fourth today, leaving her just one point behind Capricorno and Lyra, which are tied on points at the top overall.

The most star-studded class is Maxi 2, in which there is a unique fight between the 'hot 100s' - such as the trio of Wallycentos, Leopard 3 and Claus-Peter Offen's Y3K (plus the highest rated in the class, George David's Rambler 88) - and the grand prix racer former Maxi 72s - Cannonball, Jethou and North Star. Yesterday owner Dario Ferrari, afterguard Michele Ivaldi and Vasco Vascotto and the crew of the 75ft Cannonball gave the fleet a light wind racing masterclass. Today, in a fraction more pressure, the winner was Peter Dubens' Judel/Vrolijk 72 North Star. -- James Boyd / International Maxi Association

44Cup Portoroz World Championship
The 44Cup Portoroz World Championship, taking place in Slovenia next week over 12-16 October represents the 'big one' of the year; the world champion's trophy the one that all eight owner-drivers would like to be admiring on their mantlepiece this winter.

Going into the Slovenian stopover, the fourth and penultimate event of the 2022 44Cup, the local heroes on Igor Lah's Ceeref powered by Hrastnik 1860 hold a commanding five point lead in the season's championship leaderboard. Showing their usual impeccable consistency, the team on which British ace Adrian Stead calls tactics, has posted a 2-1-1 scoreline so far in Puerto Calero, Cascais and Marstrand. However on a roll since their dire 8th place finish at the start of the season in Lanzarote is Nico Poons' Charisma. The Dutchman's team, led by Kiwi tactician Hamish Pepper, has finally bucked their 'zero to hero' trend of the last seasons and won both the last two events back-to-back, the first in Cascais by a massive 12 points.

When the 44Cup was last in Portoroz at the beginning of 2021, Team Aqua finished third behind CEEREF and Team Nika. Bake would clearly like to make it the 44Cup's first ever World Championship hat-trick but warns that "Portoroz is a difficult venue. We prefer windier venues like Marstrand or Cascais. But perhaps in October we could get wind there."

The only other occasion the RC44 World Championship was held on the Adriatic was at the Adris 44 Worlds in Rovinj, Croatia, some 30 miles to the south of Portoroz in 2012. On that occasion it was won by John Bassadone's Peninsula Racing.

Racing starts at 1200 Thursday, 13 October and runs until Sunday, with up to three races scheduled each day.

Harry Price & 'The Rag' - A winning 18 footer combination
Click on image for photo gallery.

18 footer One of the highlights of the Australian 18 Footers League's 2021-22 season was the performance of the talented rookie Rag & Famish Hotel team of Harry Price, Josh McKnight and Harry Hall against the world's best and most experienced teams in the 18s.

Now, the team is about to take the next step towards its aim at becoming world #1 in 2022-23 with the acquisition of a brand new Van Munster hull for the League's upcoming season, which begins on October 16, with the annual Spring Championship.

There was never any doubt about the team's ability to adapt to the extremely difficult boats, but to achieve the success it did, throughout a tough season of predominantly strong southerly winds during 2021-22, was outstanding and certainly marked it down as a potential Giltinan World champion outfit.

The team's third place in the 2022 Giltinan World Championship on Sydney Harbour in March showed the level of it's ability, however it only re-enforced the knowledge of followers who had seen what happened earlier in the season when a severe storm hit Sydney during a race in the NSW Championship.

When the storm hit on the afternoon of Sunday, December 19, causing major damage right across the city, it whipped up strong WNW winds which produced extreme conditions for the teams competing mid-way through the League's championship race.

The young Rag & Famish Hotel team was one of only a few which survived (without a capsize) when a 30+ knot squall battered the race course as the fleet was racing downwind on the long spinnaker run from Kurraba Point on the northern side of the harbour to the bottom mark in Rose Bay on the south. -- Frank Quealey, 18 Footers League, www.18footers.com

Sailing holidays have become increasingly popular among in recent years, with a new record set this summer.

Bookings for boat holidays are up 25 per cent this summer in the UK compared to last year, according to figures released by boat holiday platform Zizoo. The platform confirms that "most ships are already booked out" for September and October 2022.

The pandemic caused a shift in behaviour that spurred growth in the boat rental market over the last two years, as people sought out socially distanced alternatives to traditional holidays. Statistics from Future Market Insights indicate the global market will this year grow to over US$17 billion, far exceeding the cruise ship market, which is worth US$7.25 billion.

But the trend has caught on, and shows no signs of slowing down post-pandemic. By 2031, the yacht charter market is expected to exceed US$28 billion at a CAGR of 5.3 per cent, with Europe taking the lion's share at 31.9 per cent.

Rising fuel costs mean that some charter holiday expenses now cost as much as the charter itself, according to competing boat charter platform Borrow a Boat. Despite this, demand remains strong, with Borrow a Boat CEO Matt Ovenden recently predicting the firm's revenue will double in 2023.

Meanwhile, bespoke yacht charter broker Helm - part of the Borrow a Boat Group - reports a 975 per cent increase in bookings from the US in 2022, and says it expects the trend to continue in 2023.
