Opening day of maxi racing at Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez
Voiles St Tropez With a light wind forecast for this entire second week of Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, the race committee from the Societe Nautique de Saint-Tropez, aided by the International Maxi Association's race officer Ariane Mainemare, worked miracles to get a first race started and finished on the opening day of maxi racing, in just 5-7 knots from the east.

From the centre of the Golfe de Saint-Tropez, amid a mass of spectator craft and with more watching from onshore, the four classes were sent off in size order, with the superyachts in Maxi 1 first. However on the first upwind it was Dario Ferrari's 75ft Cannonball, racing in Maxi 2, that made the best of the shifts and, after a long leg out to left, tacked back on to port, crossing all of Maxi 1.

While the course got shortened at the end of the return leg back into the Golfe de Saint-Tropez, finally Cannonball was overhauled by Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones' Wallycento Magic Carpet Cubed winning on the water by 18 seconds. However the trio of former Maxi 72 thoroughbred grand prix racers, excelled in the ultra-light conditions compared to their heavier, longer opponents and under IRC corrected time Cannonball, which won by 12 minutes, was followed by Peter Dubens' North Star and Sir Peter Ogden's Jethou, ahead of Magic Carpet Cubed and the other 100ft Wallys, Claus-Peter Offen's Y3K and David M Leuschen's Galateia.

While half of Maxi 2 had overtaken them by the finish, first across the line in Maxi 1 was Francesco de Santis' Southern Wind 100 Morgana, only to be beaten under IRC corrected time by the McKeon-Vitters 108 Pattoo.

Racing is scheduled to start tomorrow again at 1200. The wind will still be from the east but marginally stronger. -- James Boyd / International Maxi Association

Rekindling History
The legend of the Rhum begins in 1978 and since that very first edition boats of all categories take part. On a diminutive 11m yellow trimaran Canadian Mike Birch beat Michel Malinovksy on a 21m monohull after over 3,500 miles of racing by just 98 seconds at the finish line. Now 44 years on there are 30 solo racers - 16 in the Rhum Monohull and 14 in the Rhum Multi - classes making ready to challenge in what are always the classes with the most diverse range of designs and sizes and skippers with the broadest range of experience and ambitions.

The Monos
Visitors to Saint Malo during the build up period will be able to go to the Rhum Mono dock and admire Pen Duick III which will be sailed by Arnaud Pennarun, Kriter VIII (Wilfrid Clerton, Cap au Cap Location) or the famous Red Cigar of Catherine Chabaud (Fomatives ESI Business Schoof for Ocean As Common). Among the faces familiar to offshore racing enthusiasts will be Vendee Globe racer Jean-Pierre Dick will race his JP54 renamed 'Notre Mediterranee - Ville de Nice'.

Rhum

The Rhum Multis, "the most eclectic class"
In the Rhum Multi division, the race promises to be both exciting and competitive. Charlie Capelle, is preparing to compete on his sixth Route du Rhum in this most eclectic division which has boats between 39 and 63 feet. Capelle, skipper of ACAPELLA-La Chaine de l'espoir says: "There is a nice line-up with former racers and enlightened amateurs". Among them, is the legendary Philipe Poupon who won in 1986 and has four participations under his belt. He is going to race Pierre-1er, the boat that Florence Arthaud raced to win in 1990.

Rhum

The Route du Rhum departs Saint Malo, France on November 6.

Boats will be weighed and measured Nov. 5 through 7; races around inflatable marks run from Nov. 8 through 11. Start time is scheduled for 10 a.m.

Alinghi Red Bull Racing goes flying in Barcelona
After months of preparation, and a short delay following a capsize in a storm on 31 August, the Alinghi Red Bull Racing AC75 training boat has spent the last few days sailing in Barcelona on the waters that will host the 37th America's Cup in 2024.

Seeing BoatZero fly after months of work was an important step for the whole team and marked the starting point for the Sailing Team's work on the water. The sailors are learning to manage and handle the AC75 with the aim of being successful by 2024. This is a key period as it allows Alinghi Red Bull Racing to train in the same conditions as those expected for the Cup races.

Although the Swiss sailors are new to the AC75, they are drawing on the experience of two Sailing Team advisors: Dean Barker, a helmsman during the last America's Cup, and Pietro Sibello, a trimmer. Both are bringing their huge experience to bear for the Swiss challenger.

The team will continue to sail the AC75 as much as possible in Barcelona, notching up a maximum number of hours on the water. Meanwhile, some of the sailors will fly to Scarlino in Italy this week for the final leg of the 2022 TF35 Trophy, which Alinghi Red Bull Racing has already won with one event to go.

Cape Town, Auckland and Punta del Este confirmed ports for the 2023 Ocean Globe Race
Sir Francis Chichester made his groundbreaking one stop solo circumnavigation in 1967 chasing the original clipper ship sailing times around the world. That led to the first ever around the world yacht race in 1968 called the Sunday Times Golden Globe. It was single handed, so in 1973 it was decided to hold the first ever fully crewed yacht race around the world. The legend of the Whitbread Race was born. On Sept. 10th next year, the inaugural 2023 Ocean Globe Race will set sail around the world in the Spirit of that original Whitbread to celebrate its 50th Anniversary. Today the three stopover ports were finally announced.

"Following years of negotiations with many ports, compounded by covid issues and tough economic times, we are excited to finally announce that Cape Town, Auckland and Punta del Este are marks of the course, all cities rooted into the DNA of the original Whitbread. We couldn't be happier with the result." Said Don McIntyre, Founder and Chairman of the Ocean Globe Race. " We are particularly excited to be stopping in Auckland at the halfway mark, an absolute favourite stopover for many Whitbread and later Volvo ocean race crews".

Starting in Europe in September 2023, the OGR is a 27,000-mile sprint around the Globe divided into four legs, taking in the Southern Ocean and the three great Capes.

The fleet is divided in three classes and two discretionary invitations for a total of 30 entries, making the OGR possibly the biggest fully crewed round the world race of the last 29 years. Stopovers will include Cape Town in South Africa, Auckland in New Zealand, and Punta del Este in Uruguay, before finishing back in Europe in April 2024.

Sheila Patrick Sailor & Journalist

Sheila Patrick From the 1930's Sheila was an accomplished Sydney sailor, boat owner, sailing journalist and writer. With a few other women, she pushed through the prejudice and assumptions about women and boats to become an important figure on and off the water.

Sheila is best known for her long association with Seacraft magazine. I'm guessing the launch issue of Seacraft in July/Aug 1946 was of great interest to her. A column headlined 'Women and Sailing' by their correspondent Nymph, set Seacraft's agenda for women's sailing.

'Although for many years sailing has been wholly a man's sport, in these enlightened times, women are taking an interest in it, and no yachting magazine would be complete without at least a column devoted to their activities' The article continues ... 'in Victoria, women sailing enthusiasts are joining the newly formed Victorian Ladies' Yacht Club. The Secretary tells Nymph that they have about 150 keen members who sail in anything to gain experience', and,

Women Should Own Boats. Women are very enthusiastic about sailing, but comparatively few of them own and sail their own boats. This is a great pity as many are very keen sailors and also quite efficient. If a few more women owned boats they would be placed on the same footing as men in yacht clubs, as are the women in England and the United States'.

New dates announced for Ramsgate Week
Ramsgate Week We are pleased to provide an early update on our Ramsgate Week Regatta.

In order to run the regatta on neap tides and as a result of competitor feedback the dates have moved into August from 2023 onwards and this coming year the Regatta will take place between 7th and 11th August.

This move puts the regatta firmly back into the school holidays and supports our plans to include something for everyone in our family regatta.

The format will be generally in line with the 2022 regatta with the inclusion of an additional Performance Cruiser class catering for those with asymmetric and code 0 sails.

We have taken the Round the Goodwins race out of Ramsgate Week and the regatta now runs from Monday to Friday. A further announcement will be made once we have a new date for the Goodwins race.

We are also promoting a classic cruiser class and providing we see 2 or more entries this will be the first time classic boats will be seen racing off Ramsgate for many years.

Our trophies will be reallocated to ensure the most prestigious trophies are presented to the winners in the largest classes in 2023, this will include the QEII Cup and the Gold Cup.

To help with rising costs we have opened our entry and are offering an early early bird for confirmed entries prior to 31st January.

Whaling Ship From Rhode Island Found Off Patagonia
Scientists investigating an old shipwreck off the coast of southern Argentina are nearly confident that it contains the remains of the long-lost Dolphin, a globe-trotting whaling ship from Warren, Rhode Island, that succumbed to the seas in 1859. After years of researching the sunken ship's origins, a new analysis by Argentinian and American researchers of the tree rings in the vessel's timbers lead to the breakthrough in its identification.

Scientists are near confident that it contains the remains of the long-lost Dolphin, a globe-trotting whaling ship from Warren, Rhode Island, that succumbed to the seas in 1859. Ignacio Mundo of Argentina's Laboratory of Dendrochronology and Environmental History and scientists from the Columbia Climate School's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory compared the rings to a database of North American trees to determine that the timbers were taken from New England and the southeastern U.S. before 1850 when the Dolphin was built. Their conclusion is also based on artifacts (such as "try-works" cauldrons and bricks used for boiling blubber) found near the wreck as well as historical records from Rhode Island and Argentina.

In 2004, shifting sediments revealed the partial remains of a wooden vessel in the intertidal flats just off Puerto Madryn. They were excavated by marine archaeologists during low tides a couple years later. Speculations that the wreck may be that of the Dolphin started popping up in 2012, and Murray published a paper suggesting the same in 2019.
