Record line-up for maxi week at Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez
'Maxi week' at Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez gets underway tomorrow for the record-size fleet of 46 yachts. For a third year Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez continues its two week format: Week one focussed on the classics and giant schooners for which the event is famous, plus the smaller 'modern' boats. Week two is exclusively for the maxi yachts (ie 18.29m/60ft and above). Racing this week takes place over 4-8 October (layday on Thursday).

Besides bringing expertise in running maxi racing, helping to divide the fleet into four Maxi classes, etc, the IMA also supplies the event with its own race officer in Ariane Mainemare. This has improved the standard of race management here for the maxi classes and is one reason that the fleet here has grown to rival that of the IMA's pinnacle event, the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup.

Significantly this week's racing will also allow IMA members to score final deciding points in the Association's 2022 Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge (MMIC), the six event annual series that began in May with Palmavela. When this was last held in 2019, the series went to the wire here, decided on the last leg of the last race, with IMA President Benoît de Froidmont's Wallyno prevailing. At present Alessandro Del Bono's Reichel/Pugh 78 ILC maxi Capricorno leads the MMIC by a single point from Wallyno, which has sadly had to withdraw from racing here. This will leave Capricorno's main competition coming from the Wallycentos Galateia and Magic Carpet Cubed.

The forecast ahead is for tomorrow to be sailable, but for light winds until at least Friday. -- James Boyd / International Maxi Association

Golden Globe fleet dive into doldrums
A week after the fleet crossed the Lanzarote gate, Simon Curwen (UK) is leading the fleet into the Doldrums through the 10th parallel, where the elastic fleet expands and compresses depending on the conditions.

This week, it's been mainly compression for the leaders Simon Curwen (UK) and Tapio Lehtinen (FIN), who after making most of their time west of the stormy low-pressure system are now hitting the windless wall of the Doldrums. With the wind strengthening from the North, the back of the fleet has made good progress on the leaders, and the mid fleet pack. This benefited Damien Guillou (FR) in his chase back to the top, reducing the gap from 700 miles in Lanzarote to 500 today.

There were a few changes in positions for Kirsten Neuschäfer (SA), 5th in Fuerteventura and her compatriot Jeremy Bagshaw, a close 6th then. Kirsten, spending long hours at the helm posted the best daily average with several days around 170 miles, enabling her to close on Abhilash Tomy (IND), eventually stealing 4th place from him before chasing Pat Lawless (IRL), himself catching Tapio Lehtinen (FIN), 200 miles to the east of him.

Meanwhile in Fuerteventura, Guy deBoer (USA) has reunited with his Tashiba 36 Spirit, which has been lifted off the rocks where he landed on September 18th. Spirit's salvage involved building a sand road for the mobile crane and the low-bed truck to get to the boat, getting the mast off and lifting the boat onto a low-bed truck. Driving it out was easy without extra damage. Sadly, the boat has been visited in the meantime, with a significant amount of material including the Hydrovane, Watt & See generator, winches and other material were stolen for a value exceeding USD 50,000.

The Globe 40 Reaches Cape Leeuwin
On Friday September 30, the Dutch crew on SEC HAYAI, Frans Budel and Ysbrand Endt, passed the longitude of Cape Leewin in south-west Australia, a 3,580-mile (6,630 km) sea passage from Mauritius, which took them 16 days and 12 hours. They were followed just 8 hours later by the Japanese/Italian crew on MILAI Around The World. SEC HAYAI was also the first to negotiate the gate at Eclipse Island, the course mark close to Cape Leeuwin.

Cape of Good Hope, Cape Leeuwin, Cape Horn... In the legendary trilogy synonymous with round the world races, the GLOBE40 has now played its first two cards. This passage via Australia more or less marks the halfway point in the event's second longest leg, which spans nearly 7,000 miles (13,000 km) in all and rounds of in New Zealand.

Having set sail from Mauritius on Sunday 11 June, the competitors quickly plunged southwards in a bid to avoid a very wide zone of high pressure and light winds at the centre of the Indian Ocean and track down the steady W'ly winds that they hoped would push them towards Australia. The descent proved to be very tactical, with the crews positioning themselves further north or south, west or east than their rivals, according to their progress. As a result, 4 teams were constantly jockeying for the top spot, crossing and recrossing one another's wakes just a mile apart at times, slap bang in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

Waitangi-Where She Belongs
The relaunch of the 1894 Logan Gaff cutter on her 100th birthday, was a turning point in Australian perceptions, of what was possible, and more importantly worthwhile, when it came to the restoration of our sailing heritage.

Following a brief visit to New Zealand (on a cargo ship) in 2000 to witness the Americas Cup defence, the seed was sown for her permanent return to the New Zealand in 2002. It seems entirely "right" that a boat called WAITANGI, made of Kauri and designed by a man called Logan, should these days be sailing on the Waitemata rather than Port Phillip!

I've sailed on the back hulled, clipper bowed, cutter many times, and its always a fascinating experience. Everything on board is labour intensive , from hoisting the sails, to handling the miles of mainsheet, to two handedly helming the rarely balanced boat with its massive tiller. So when an Auckland friend sent me the link to the short video above I was delighted to see that she's still out there every Classic Race, with an interesting ownership and crewing model that is worth considering by any organisation looking to find the magic formula of how to run a big old yacht!

Alone at the Edge of the World
In the heaving seas of the Southern Ocean, a small, red-hulled sailboat tossed and rolled, at the mercy of the tail end of a tempest. The boat's mast was sheared away, its yellow sails sunk deep in the sea. Amid the wreckage of the cabin, Susie Goodall sloshed through water seeping in from the deck, which had cracked when a great wave somersaulted the boat end over end. She was freezing, having been lashed by ocean, rain, and wind. Her hands were raw and bloody. Except for the boat, her companion and home for the 15,000 miles she'd sailed over the past five months, Goodall was alone.

The 29-year-old British woman had spent three years readying for this voyage. It demanded more from her than she could have imagined. She loved the planning of it, rigging her boat for a journey that might mean not stepping on land for nearly a year. But she was unprepared for the attention it drew—for the fact that everyone wanted a piece of her story.

The thing was, her story was a fantastic one. Goodall was the youngest of the 18 skippers resurrecting the Golden Globe Race, a so-called "voyage for madmen," and the only woman.

British Virgin Islands Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival
Registration is now open for the 50th edition of the BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival March 27- April 2, 2023 © BVISR

The seven day event starts on Monday March 27th with the Sailing Festival opening day festivities and skipper pack collection. The Sailing Festival, a warm up event, runs Tuesday March 28th and Wednesday March 29th, offering friendly and fun racing to island destinations, including Scrub Island. The Scrub Island Invitational, hosted by Scrub Island Resort, is an approximate 12NM upwind ride for the CSA Cruising, Bareboat, and Multihull fleets, and a longer course for the CSA-Racing fleet.

Located off the northeast end of Tortola, Scrub Island is a beautiful private resort island with classic Caribbean white sand beaches and docks at the ready. The relatively short race to Scrub Island gives sailors plenty of time on island to enjoy the outstanding Scrub Island hospitality.

Following a lay day on Thursday March 30th, crew and boats will be set for the ever-competitive BVI Spring Regatta, three days of the Caribbean's best racing starting Friday March 31st. The Regatta has traditionally attracted a diverse fleet of boats in addition to a strong bareboat fleet, and whether sailors participate in all five races of the BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival, part or all of the Festival, or the three-day Regatta, the event is flush with 50 years of great stories and experiences that keep sailors, and their families and friends, coming back year after year.

Committed to a clean and green sailing festival, since its inception, the BVI Spring Regatta has made it a priority to protect the pristine waters and lush vegetation that surrounds this Caribbean territory comprising of more than 50 islands and cays. Sailors for the Sea, a leading conservation organisation awarded the organisation's first Gold level of certification to the Regatta in 2009, and the event has worked diligently to maintain that certification ever since. In 2014, the BVI Spring Regatta was recognised as the first carbon neutral regatta in the world as recognised by Sailors of the Sea. -- Michelle Slade

Third consecutive GC32 Racing Tour overall victory for Swiss team
Appropriately, given it is the longest-standing and most successful catamaran racing team on the planet, Alinghi Red Bull Racing has been confirmed as the 2022 winner of the GC32 Racing Tour. This continues the success of Ernesto Bertarelli's team, which also won the last two editions of the World Sailing-approved flying catamaran one design circuit in 2021 and on its first participation in 2019. (The GC32 Racing Tour did not take place in 2020 due to the pandemic).

While this season Ernesto Bertarelli's team has been largely focused on its challenge for the 37th America's Cup in Barcelona in 2024, its continued participation on the GC32 Racing Tour has been no less effective. For their latest challenge, the Alinghi team merged with Red Bull and for 2022, the new Alinghi Red Bull Racing initially fielded two teams for the GC32 Racing Tour.

The RWYC 'allspars Final Fling' - 4th Edition
On the weekend of the 15th and 16th October, The Royal Western Yacht Club Of England hosts the fourth year of the Allspars Final Fling Dinghy Regatta. After another successful event back in 2021, seeing more than 50 dinghies take to the water in Plymouth Sound from all over the country the club is excited to get the weekend underway in two weeks' time.

This regatta alone highlights the huge interest that still exists for dinghy sailing around the UK and how great Plymouth Sound is for accommodating racing for a variety of boats and sizes with a large racecourse and ever-changing winds and tides which brings Plymouth into a league of its own.

The Final Fling requires huge manpower, which brings many clubs around Plymouth to get together to ensure safe and smooth racing afloat with a dedicated shore team which allows flexible, seamless and safe launch/recovery where everyone can benefit. The Royal Western welcomes all dinghies sailors near and far to join us for a weekend of great racing.
