Quantum Racing are crowned Royal Cup champions in Scarlino, Italy

Royal Cup Doug DeVos' Quantum Racing won the Royal Cup 52 Super Series Scarlino title today in Tuscany, Italy, their third regatta triumph of the five event 2022 52 Super Series season. They overturned a one point deficit to triumph by five clear points ahead of Takashi Okura's Sled and now carry a five points lead forwards to the 2022 season big finale in Barcelona in three weeks time.

After four days of southerly winds, Saturday showdown on Scarlino's Golfo de Scarlino was contested in a NW'ly Mistral direction, presenting a new challenge to the afterguards. Quantum Racing stayed consistent with a second and fourth whilst title rivals Sled had their worst day of the week.

After finishing fifth in the first race of the day, Sled did seem to have resuscitated their title challenge as they lead Quantum Racing on the approach to the windward mark in the second race. But they were then judged to foul Quantum during their tack. And the negative effect of their resulting penalty turns was then exacerbated as they gybed into lighter air and the 2021 chamoions ended up ninth down the first run.

The Italian victory for Quantum Racing comes after a disappointing fourth placed at the last event in Puerto Portals, Mallorca when charismatic owner-helm DeVos was absent and Hutchinson steered.

Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez
Photo by Ingrid Abery, www.ingridabery.com. Click on image for photo gallery.

Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez The particularly boisterous conditions that greeted today's fleets prompted the Race Committee and the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez's teams to turn the programme on its head from the crack of dawn to make the most of a lively but manageable weather window early this morning.

For this final day of competition, the gulf served up some stunning racing on calm to rough seas, blown by a moderate to strong W'ly wind. Between the Mistral at the start of the week and Thursday's Challenge Day, the Classics completed two races, each of them contested in very different contexts: moderate wind yesterday and a building Mistral today.

There were many momentous occasions, including the three 12mRs Il Moro di Venezia, France and Ikra embroiled in the most spectacular of speed runs. France just got the better of Ikra, albeit it by just a few seconds, but she didn't have quite enough of a lead to finish ahead of Eugenia V (Rhodes 1968) in corrected time. This scenario was echoed in the Epoque Aurique Group which Spartan, the speedy Herreshoff designed New York 50, dominated play on the line, but her handicap let her down against Torben Grael's formidable Scud (Herreshoff 1903).

Shenandoah of Sark, the impressive three-masted schooner (Ferris 1902), was the big threat in the group vying for the Rolex Trophy. Beaten in race 1 by the amazing Paine design Viveka, she came right back into the game in the breeze, securing victory in today's race and with it the prestigious Rolex Trophy.

8 other Trophies were awarded this evening to the champions in the 8 remaining groups of Classics: Torpez Trophy (Classic Marconi A), Eugenia V (Rhodes 1968), Turquoise Trophy (Classic Marconi B), Espar II (Sangermani 1968). Mercantour Trophy (Epoque Aurique A), Scud (Herreshoff 1903) Byblos Trophy (Epoque Aurique B), Lulu (Rabot 1897), Marshall Trophy (Epoque Marconi A) Skylark 1937 (Olin Stephens 1937), SNSM Trophy (Epoque Marconi B) Bona (Baglietto 1934), Besserat de Bellefon Trophy (Grand Tradition) Sumurun (Fife 1914) and the Pierre Basset Trophy, won by Jap (Fife 1897) for the best yacht in the 'Guests' group.

Building cool stuff right - Moore Brothers
Moore Brothers Aviation buffs and better read naval architects will already be up to speed about the Soviet Ekranoplan ground effect craft programme which ran from the early 1950s to the late 1970s. Out of that programme emerged the famed Caspian Sea Monster which had military analysts around the world scratching their heads. Now the same ground effect flight concept is back in modern guise and with the benefit of today's materials and design tools to a completely different new level of refinement, delivered through ambitious design allied with the best composite engineering and build craftsmanship. Carol Cronin paid a visit to a well-known maritime town and the famous boatbuilding family who still call it home

There's a long-standing tradition in Bristol, RI, of building both boats and their high-tech equipment right - and right at the leading edge of technology. Today, the Moore Brothers Company is carrying that heritage forward by creating bespoke composites, all built on site by a handpicked staff from the highest echelons of grand prix sailing that's more than doubled in number since 2020.

Bo Petersen wins OK Dinghy European title
Bo Petersen has won his third OK Dinghy European Championship at Société Nautique de Bandol, France, after one final race was sailed on Saturday in Bandol. Stefan de Vries takes the silver while race winner Valerian Lebrun takes the bronze.

It has been a tough event with first a mistral, and then strong winds for the rest of the week, bringing colder than expected conditions, but it is still Bandol and a very pleasant place to be. Petersen never finished worse than third in an 80 boat fleet, which is impressive, but the top four boats were a level apart from the rest of the fleet and it was very tight at the top.

The final race was sailed in 18-22 knots and big waves with a close battle between de Vries and Petersen, who started the day on level points. De Vries had a good lead at the top, but Petersen was ahead at the bottom mark. De Vries passed him up the final beat to cross in second behind Lebrun and take the title. However de Vries was scored UFD for being over the line at the start, handing the title to Petersen.

Final top ten after 7 races
1. Bo Petersen, DEN, 11 points
2. Stefan De Vries, NED, 14
3. Valerian Lebrun, FRA, 16
4. Nick Craig, GBR, 16
5. Laurent Hay, FRA, 34
6. Russel Clark, GBR, 35
7. Andy Davis, GBR, 42
8. Sonke Behrens, GER, 55

Armel Le Cleac'h: "Of Course I Want To Win The Gold Medal!"
Four Ultims set off on Saturday from Lorient for the 24H Ultim, a solo race of around 500 miles, which is designed to serve as a dress rehearsal at just over a month before the start of the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe. Among these starters will be Banque Populaire XI, whose skipper Armel Le Cleac'h took time out to answer questions from Tip & Shaft.

So Armel this Ultim race is what you say you need to really test yourself one last time before the Route du Rhum? Yes, I had an exchange last winter with Jean-Marie Corteville of the Azimut Challenge to try and encourage them to have the Azimut Ultim back in place like last year but it proved complicated for him, so I posed the question a bit to Emmanuel Bachellerie and Mathieu Sarrot at the finish of the Finistère Atlantique [which they had organized with their company Ultim Saling, Ed]. They told me that they were interested, and here we are. This event is good, it's the last meet for us to get into race configuration, timed best to be able to be at the start, on a decent course, with weather to manage, racing solo [in fact a 'false solo' as Sebastien Josse and Pierre-Emmanuel Herisse will be on board to keep watch, Ed].

The forecasted conditions seem set to be quite hard with a fair bit of upwind in strong winds in the first hours, so it will look like a Rhum start. It's going to acclimatise us a bit to the autumn mood. And it is good to do this rehearsal now as we know very well that we're all going to be on the dock for more than ten days in Saint-Malo during which you lose your sailing feel and often the start is a rude awakening too much time off the boat. And this Route du Rhum is very much going to be a sprint, you will have get right into the match straight off.

Sutton Medal to be presented at Royal Thames
The Herreshoff Marine Museum / America's Cup Hall of Fame is pleased to announce that the Sutton Medal, named in honor of Sir Richard Francis Sutton 5th Bt, will be presented to Antony Matusch and the family of the late Maldwin Drummond on the 12th of November for volunteering thousands of hours of their time to lead the Royal Yacht Squadron's effort to produce the 2001 America's Cup Jubilee, one of the finest moments in yachting history.

The Sir Richard Francis Sutton Medal, instituted by the America's Cup Hall of Fame in 2018, recognizes the spirit of the America's Cup, as set down by the founding donors in their Deed of Gift "to promote friendly competition between foreign countries." It is awarded, from time-to-time, to persons or entities that have exemplified that spirit, in the course of their association with the America's Cup.

The Hall of Fame will also recognize the America's Cup Hall of Fame Class of 2020 inductees Bryan Willis and Rolf Vrolijk who were previously honored via a virtual program - given the pandemic - in 2020. They will finally be honored in a traditional, in-person ceremony.

The evening will begin with cocktails on the Royal Thames Yacht Club terrace followed by dinner in the iconic Coffee Room overlooking Hyde Park.

Tickets to the event are £200 and can be purchased at herreshoff.org/sutton or email to reserve a full table.
