Voiles Saint Tropez Thursday at Les Voiles has the spirit of the Nioulargue and the breeze at its centre, wrapped up in the sheer madness of sailors on a quest for fun and friendly nautical challenges, all of them imbued with the sense of fair play so cherished by the teams at the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez. Owners, captains and crews challenge one over a drink, with the winner treated to a meal or the simple pleasure of a great day at sea. Competing in the Club 55 Cup, the Centenary Trophy and a good dozen or so challenges between 2, 3, 4 and even 6 boats, the boats had all their sails set to take on the gulf today. This evening’s ever popular crew procession through the town’s streets gave the sailors yet another reason to set the small port in France’s Var region alight and rounded off a wondrous day in style.

Crazy and sometimes unlikely Challenges
From 13:00 hours, Le Portalet bore witness to a steady stream of protagonists competing for the Club 55 Cup, the Centenary Trophy and a dozen or so battles with two, three or even six boats, with some evenly matched challenges like the one that grouped together the magnificent Bermudan yawls Skylark (Stephens 1937), Manitou (Stephens 1937) and Blitzen (Sparkman&Stephens 1938), that of the large craft pitting Cambria (Fife 1929) against Halloween (Fife 1926) and Mariella (Mylne 1938) or the more unlikely battles involving the gunter rig Alcyon (Scotto/Vaton 2013) and the 10mR sloop Marge (Anker 1936). The Modern sailboats also joined in this exotic mix of groups when the Grand Soleil 50 MadIV, one of the stars of IRC B (North Sails Trophy), challenged Bernina X, the brilliant X41 in IRC D (Suzuki Trophy).

To Kismet the Centenary Trophy
21 centenarian yachts contested today’s Centenary Trophy offered by the Yacht Club de Gstaad. A mixture of rigs, sizes and styles, this original event at Les Voiles saw the smallest sailboat of the fleet, Dainty (Wesmacott 1922) with a waterline of 8.20 m, vie with the giant Shenandoah of Sark (Ferris 1902) measuring 55 m, and a whole series of boats created at the start of the 20th century, each more legendary than the next. Enjoying a pursuit race format, with the boats crossing the start line according to their rating and the first to cross the finish line being declared the winner, the Centenary Trophy enables competitors to race on an equal footing. As such, after 3 delicious hours of racing, Sir Richard Matthews’ gaff cutter Kismet (Fife 1896) scored a brilliant victory, just ahead of the two Herreshoff designs, Scud (1903) helmed by Torben Grael, and Oriole, the 1905 gaff sloop.

Hobie 16 World Championships
Costa Brava Pirineu de Girona, Spain: Congratulations to our 2022 Hobie 16 World Champions, Cam Owen and Susan Ghent from Australia. After a long day of waiting and an eventual abandoned race Cam and Susie took the top spot in an incredibly talented pool of sailors. They were followed by 2019 World Champions Yamil Saba Fuentes & Gonzalo Cendra Falcon (VEN) in second and Darren Smith & Claire Bisgood (AUS) in third with multiple other World Champions filling out the top 10.

The second day of the finals was not to be. Clouds, intermittent rain, and light winds held sailors on shore for the final day. The breeze did fill in afternoon with more rain. The race committee called the fleet off for the final day of racing but shortly after the start of the race, the wind quit again forcing an abandonment.

15 days of racing, 60 races, 353 sailors from 22 countries participated in this event together

The 23rd Hobie 16 World Champions are: Cam OWEN/Susan Ghent (AUS) followed by Yamil Saba Fuentes/Gonzolo Cendra Falcon (VEN) in second and Darren Smith/Claire Bisgood (AUS) in third.

Royal Cup 52 Super Series Scarlino The waters of the Golfo di Follonica, Tuscany continue to deliver excellent racing conditions for the Royal Cup 52 Super Series Scarlino. With winds gusting over 25kts for Race 5 of the ten race series and a slight drop to 12-15 for Race 6, the 2021 52 Super Series champions Sled, steered by Takashi Okura, eked out a four points lead Thursday in their quest to land the Royal Cup.

Sled’s afterguard of Francesco Bruni, Murray Jones and Andrea Visintini seem to have the best handle on the wind changes on the race areas, once again finding small gains which other teams either miss or are not best positioned to take advantage of. This sixth sense, or particular magice, saw them pull through race leaders Quantum Racing on the final downwind to win Race 5. Complementing this with a third behind Platoon and Phoenix in the second race Sled moved clear of Quantum Racing with whom they had started the day tied.

There are up to four race left to sail.

Provisional Standings Royal Cup 52 Super Series Scarlino:
1. Sled (USA), Takashi Okura, 17 points
2. Quantum Racing (USA), Doug Devos, 21
3. Phoenix (RSA), Hasso & Tina Plattner, 23
4. Alegre (GBR), Andy Soriano, 27
5. Platoon (GER), Harm Müller-Spreer, 29
6. Vayu (THA), Whitcraft Family, 34
7. Provezza (TUR), Ergin Imre, 37
8. Interlodge (USA), Austin & Gwen Fragomen, 38
9. Gladiator (GBR), Tony Langley, 44 Pts.

Seahorse Sailor Of The Month
This month's nominees:

Voiles Saint Tropez Peter Duncan (USA)
A kind of consolation prize this time… Peter Duncan did not win this year’s Etchells Worlds in Cowes, in fact he finished a (for him) lowly 4th sailing with now Cowes-local Andrew ‘Dog’ Palfrey and Mark Mendelblatt. However, a look at Duncan’s CV shows just how long overdue his nomination is: twice winner of the J/70 world title and currently the holder of both that and the Melges 24 title. But what seals it is Duncan’s 1st J/70 title, discarding a 3rd place in a 160-strong fleet

Voiles Saint Tropez Richard Palmer (GBR)
It’s been a long time since you had to look far down the two-handed results sheet for a RORC offshore race before you found the name Jangada. Palmer’s increasingly high-mileage JPK has been at the front in RORC races, often at the front among the crewed division too, since the UK double-handed movement really took off. He most recently won the Round Britain Race - both two-handed and overall - racing the long and complicated course with co-skipper Rupert Holmes

Voiles Saint Tropez September's winner:
John Greenwood (GBR)
‘John has been a Finn class legend for over 30 years’ - Lawrence Crispin (Laser World Champion); ‘An exceptional supporter of young sailors’ - Tim Saunders; ‘Kia kaha, John, a true Finn class hero’ - Debbie Howarth; ‘Bravo, John!’ - Rafa Trujillo; ‘Can’t dance or sing but handy in a Finn’ - Simon Fry; ‘Always a story to listen to!’ - Charlie Cumley; ‘Big hugs’ - Spud Howarth; ‘Super-generous with all of those youngsters’ - Sandra Verity.

Kismet wins Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy
Kismet crossing the line. Photo by Juerg Kaufmann / GYC
Kismet Kismet (1898) skippered by British Richard Matthews has won the 2022 edition of the Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy, with only a tiny margin on Scud (1903) owned by Italian Patrizio Bertelli with Torben Grael calling tactics in second, and Oriole (1905) sailed by a young Spanish crew completing the podium.

Kismet is a gaff cutter designed by William Fife III and built in Scotland in 1898, after a long racing career she was used as a houseboat until 2005 and was later restored and went back to regattas, winning several events. This was her third participation to the Centenary Trophy.

The Centenary Trophy was raced on a nine nautical miles course set in the Gulf of Saint Tropez, with the start and finish line just off the breakwater to allow the public and the fans to admire the show of the old ladies battling for victory.

Kismet started seventh, but managed to catch up already on the initial stretch to the first downwind mark, and from then on maintained the lead until the finish line, where her crew celebrated the victory in style!

Women’s & Youth America’s Cup Notice Of Race Released
The rapidly re-vamping Port Olímpic, a short and pleasant stroll down the palm-lined promenade that stretches the length of Barcelona’s waterfront, is set to be the stunning new base for the future stars of the America’s Cup.

The Women’s and Youth teams lucky enough to be selected will experience a regatta simply like no other placing them in the epicentre of the America’s Cup crucible of competition.

Running sequentially, the Youth America’s Cup starts on Thursday 19th September 2024 and the Women’s America’s Cup on Thursday 3rd October 2024. Those successful teams will then move forward to a ‘Final Series’ of four fleet races on one day to produce the top two teams who will advance on to the respective Youth and Women’s America’s Cup Single Matches to determine the respective winners.

Already a local team has been created, representing the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona, Sail Team BCN, which will represent the city, the region and the country in both the Youth and Women’s America's Cup 2024. The team, that will be managed by professional sailor Guillermo Altadill and international teams' director Stewart Hosford, received the approval from America's Cup Management (ACE) and Emirates Team New Zealand to be the Spanish challenge in the 2024 event.

Prospective entries will be invited to submit Initial Information Documentation from the 1st November 2022 running through to the 30th June 2023 with the organisers intending to publish a full entry list by Wednesday 1st May 2024.

"World on Water" September 30.22 Global Sailing Highlights
This is the weekly "Sailing World on Water" for September 30, 2022. It features global highlights of the sport which have been released in the last seven days.

It was the first ever event win for Quentin Delapierre’s France SailGP Team, defeating Jimmy Spithill’s USA team and Tom Slingsby’s Australia in the final at Spain Sail Grand Prix. The French team rocket into the all-important top three of the championship standings after six events of Season 3.

For the fourth regatta of the 2022 52 SUPER SERIES, the world's leading grand prix regatta series, returns to Italy for the first time since 2019, this time going back to the Marina di Scarlino in beautiful Tuscany. In late September there should be a good range of wind and weather conditions and usually it is an open race course area. There are several changes in crew line ups. . . . it is going to be a truly fascinating week of racing, seeing if any one team can build themselves a decent cushion to carry forwards to the season's grand finale in Barcelona. -- Geoff Waller
