Royal Cup leaders Quantum Racing are back on form in Scarlino

Scarlino After two races in winds which topped 27kts in the gusts Quantum Racing lead the Royal Cup Scarlino 52 SUPER SERIES regatta. With American owner driver Doug DeVos back as helmsman after missing the last event in July in Mallorca, the 2022 World Champions posted two second places in challenging, shifting breezes to finish the day on top of the leaderboard.

While Thailand’s Whitcraft family won the first contest – their victory meaning every team on the circuit has now won at least one race this season – it was Takashi Okura’s 2021 circuit champions Sled which took the winning gun for the second race. They outmanoeuvred Quantum Racing at the top of the second beat to take the lead just before the wind dropped and a 120 degree shift in direction upended the race course.

Even if there were no significant place changes caused by the big rain cloud and its effects, it came at just the wrong time for the Race 1 winning Vayu crew who were starved of wind just as they were trying to get around the final turn. Unfortunately they touched the buoy and the resulting penalty dropped them from a potential fourth to ninth place, to lie fourth overall.

Breezes are expected to be lighter for the next few days on Scarlino’s Gulf of Follonica.

Provisional Standings Royal Cup 52 SUPER SERIES Scarlino:
1. Quantum Racing (USA), Doug Devos, 2+2 = 4 points
2. Sled (USA), Takashi Okura, 5+1 = 6
3. Phoenix (RSA), Hasso & Tina Plattner, 3+4 = 7
4. Vayu (THAI), Whitcraft Family, 1+9 = 10
5. Alegre (GBR), Andy Soriano, 7+3 = 10
6. Platoon (GER), Harm Muller-Spreer, 4+7 = 11 Pts.
7. Provezza (TUR), Ergin Imre, 8+5 = 13 Pts.
8. Gladiator (GBR), Tony Langley, 6+8 = 14 Pts.
9. Interlodge (USA), Austin & Gwen Fragomen, 9+6 = 15 Pts.

Voiles de Saint-Tropez: The Mistral Colours the Gulf!

Voiles de Saint-Tropez Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez brings together all the ingredients of a festive extravaganza: sea, sun, sublime sailboats and breeze. For once though, the latter component got a little overeager today, forcing Race Management to keep one of the most beautiful fleets in the world in the port of Saint Tropez. 30 knots of established wind were served up in the gulf itself, gusting to 50 around the edges... Without a moment’s hesitation, the 132 Modern sailboats and the 85 Classic yachts wisely remained dockside, enabling the big crowds to get up close to these delicious racing steeds of all shapes and sizes. Georges Korhel and all the teams at the Societe Nautique de Saint-Tropez are keeping a close eye on the weather data as they wait for the Mistral to ease so that the marvellous show can go on...

The 54.35-metre Shenandoah of Sark is undoubtedly one of the stars of Les Voiles and the 17th edition of the prestigious Rolex Trophy. Originally commissioned from naval architect Theodore Ferris by the American investment banker Charles Fahnestock and inspired by the lines of Meteor III, a yacht belonging to German emperor and King of Prussia, Kaiser Wilhelm II, the fabulous three-master built by the Townsend & Downey shipyard in New York was launched in 1902.

Rescued by Baron Marcel Bich, she took to the water again in Newport for France’s first America’s Cup campaigns. Following a complete overhaul, she flies the equivalent of the original downwind sail area, namely 2,000 m2, but some of the spars and mastheads have been reinforced.

To celebrate her centenary, her owner at the time treated her to a circumnavigation of the globe, which notably included skirting around Cape Horn in close to 50 knots of breeze during an extraordinary cruise through the majestic channels of Patagonia.

The name Shenandoah has Native American roots and means ‘The daughter of the stars’ as well as being the title of an iconic American folk song or sea shanty designed to keep the sailors motivated during arduous manoeuvres.

Mega - in every sense - HH Catamarans
HH Catamarans With Morrelli and Melvin on design, Paul Hakes in charge of build and industrial tycoon Hudson Wang investing and guiding his large team it's no wonder the exceptional skills and financial resources of HH Catamarans continues to allow them to keep driving the large electrified performance catamaran genre forwards

When Hudson Wang decided to expand his industrial empire to include boatbuilding he didn’t mess around; he invested $35M building a new yard from the ground up, filled it with state-of-the art CNC machines, and tasked veteran Kiwi boatbuilder Paul Hakes with creating the world’s leading catamaran brand. The new HH60 is a breathtaking boat, as stylish and luxurious as it is quick, and is a fitting model for a brand with such lofty ambitions.

It hasn’t all been plain sailing since the business was launched, but Hakes has homed in on a winning formula.

OK Dinghy Europeans in Bandol
Once again, the beach at Bandol, France, has filled up with OK Dinghies from all over Europe ahead of the 2022 European Championship, which was opened on Tuesday at the Société Nautique de Bandol. The OK Dinghy class loves coming to Bandol and this event marks a much-anticipated return to the home of OK Dinghy sailing on the Mediterranean.

Around 80 boats from 11 nations have arrived in Bandol to be greeted by a mistral that caused the cancellation of Tuesday’s practice race. However, those who arrived early have been training in some amazing sailing conditions, with big waves, sunshine and 20 knot winds on the bay over the past few days.

The OK Dinghy European championship was last held here in 2018 and looking for any excuse to return, the class also initiated an Autumn Trophy which was held in Bandol last year for the first time and that largely acted as a catalyst to attract the high entry this year.

The entry list is a who’s who of OK Dinghy sailing and includes five times world champion Nick Craig, from Britain, twice European champion Bo Petersen, from Denmark, plus past world champions Greg Wilcox, from New Zealand, and Thomas Hansson-Mild, from Sweden. In addition, other top sailors here include Valerian Lebrun and Laurent Hay from France, Stefan de Vries, from the Netherlands, and Andy Davis, from Britain.

Racing is scheduled to begin Wednesday at 11.00. Ten races are planned until Saturday 1 October. It is hoped the mistral will moderate overnight but the rest of the event could present some challenging conditions to the fleet with more strong winds forecast.

The Hobie 16 Worlds Semi's are in the books. Who made the cut?
Similar to yesterday, racing for the final day of the semi-finals got underway shortly after 11:00 AM in the offshore breeze. The early race started off in 12 knots of breeze but, it didn’t hold. As the wind got lighter during the race it became shifty. Finding the favored side and managing the shifts became the priority. One race was completed in this session before the wind died and sailors were sent to shore.

Session two sailors were held onshore waiting for the onshore thermal that finally arrived in the late afternoon. This race was a light and lumpy one with oscillating winds of 6-10 knots. Those that picked the correct shift pattern did well but it was easy to make a mistake and lose many places.

At the front, the battle for the lead continues with incredibly consistent finishes from Darren SMITH/Claire BISGOOD (AUS) lead followed closely by Cam OWEN/Susan Ghent (AUS) in second and Yamil SABA FUENTES/Gonzolo CENDRA FALCON (VEN) in third.

With the semi-finals concluded the field will now but cut to the top 48 teams who will continue on for the final two days.

Match Race Denmark
Skovshoved, Denmark: Sweden’s Anna Ostling and the Wings Sailing Team have won the inaugural Women’s Match Race Denmark at Skovshoved Harbour in Copenhagen, hosted by the Royal Danish Yacht Club. The event is the second stage of the 2022 Women’s World Match Racing Tour, attracting twelve international women’s match racing teams to the three day event.

Östling and team secured the event win with a 2-0 win over French world no.1 ranked match racer Pauline Courtois and her Match in Pink Normandy Elite Team.

With less experience sailing the DS37 match racing boats, Courtois and her team were quick to find their stride in the heavier boats and remained unbeaten in the qualifying and semi-final rounds. However, it was Ostling and her formidable and long standing Wings Sailing crew that brought their experience in the DS37’s to the finals when it counted most.
