International Etchells Worlds
Three races were completed on the third day of the Etchells World Championship with the competitors spending close to ten hours on the water. Race winners today were Peter Duncan's Oatmeal (USA 1453), Anatole Masfen's New Order (NZL 1499), and Shaun Frohlich's Exabyte (GBR 1459).

While conditions were not totally stable, through determination and endeavour the Royal Yacht Squadron Race Committee produced three battles in the Eastern Solent. 8-10 knots of shifty gradient breeze, with almost a full double tidal range was an intense examination of focus and stamina.

Today's action takes the race count to four in the Etchells World Championship. The regatta leader is still Stephen Benjamin's Stella Blue (USA 1427), Peter Duncan's Oatmeal (USA 1453) moves up to second and Lawrie Smith's Mila (GBR 1502) climbs up to third on countback from Andrew Lawson's No Dramas (GBR 1490). -- Louay Habib

Hobie 16 Worlds Open Qualifying Series
Testing conditions on the first day of the onsite qualifier. More wave than wind made surf launching a challenge today as boats left shore. Winds were more moderated today 8-10 knots but with large waves leftover from yesterday's stronger conditions. Getting everyone out through the surf was a carefully orchestrated process. Once on the racecourse, the lighter breezes required careful technique to keep the boat moving upwind. Downwind sailors would try to surf the waves to catch every advantage. Four races were completed today over two sessions with sailors coming to shore to swap boats between sessions.

Seventy-seven teams are competing to qualify for entry into the semi-final round of the open world championships. Fifty teams have prequalified from their home countries and this qualifying round will select the remainder of the semi-final field.

At the end of day one, Gavin Luxton and Carmen Andrews (AUS) are in the lead, followed by Nicklas Heide-Joergensen and Emilie Strom Jacobsesn (DEN) and Alberto Sonino and Virginia Jacquemod (ITA) respectively.

The qualfying series continues through September 24

Melges 20 And 32 World Championships
Puntaldia Sardinia, Italy: The second day of racing in Puntaldia begins to outline the rankings in both classes of the Melges 20 and 32 World Championship 2022.

Really complicated wind conditions today on the Puntaldia race course which with a 025 wind, wave formed and variable intensity between 10 and 15 knots proved to be not easy tactical interpretation.

In the Melges 32 fleet we are witnessing a strong battle with an incredible balance at the top: four teams are closed in a single point at the top of the standings with the top three on same points. After six races, the German Wilma of Fritz Homann (with Nico Celon at the tactic) takes the lead, canceling yesterday's day with two bullets in today's fifth and sixth races.

On equal points the Italian Enfant Terrible of Alberto Rossi (with Vasco Vascotto) who runs into an early start in the second race of the day, however proving that he can get back into the fight thanks to great speed and important comebacks. The leading trio is completed by the Norwegian Pippa of Lasse Petterson (Gabriele Benussi tactician). In fourth place the German Corinthian Team of Heat of Max Augustin which with great consistency of performance, even without any partial victory, is the fight for the title of World Champion with still five races to go.

In the Melges 20 class, the history of this World Championship seems to turn everything towards a head-to-head duel between the leader, the Monegasque Nika (pt. 8) of Vladimir Prosikhin (with Manu Weiller as tactician) and the reigning European champion, the Italian Brontolo ( pt.11) by Filippo Pacinotti (with the American Taylor Canfield). Meanwhile, Dario Levi's Fremito d'Arja (with Stefano Cherin on the tactical calls) returns to the fight for the podium and climbs up the standings even if is now 9 points away from the top of the standings.

WHAT After two decades spent leading Nautor's Swan to ever great innovation and success, Star world champion and America's Cup veteran Enrico Chieffi has now taken over the helm at SLAM Clothing...

To succeed in the clothing world means accepting that the environment will be fiercely competitive. The pace of change at the high-performance end of the sport has triggered a new wave of technical clothing which has seen the competition increase even further. Which is one reason why SLAM's new CEO Enrico Chieffi is not only well-suited to the job, but is fired up about the task ahead.

Many will know Chieffi as the highly accomplished Italian Olympic sailor, a multiple world champion, America's Cup tactician and lifelong devotee to sailing. Others know him for his pivotal role at Nautor's Swan as vice president where he spent well over two decades shaping a new future for the shipyard, most notably in the performance world. Chieffi likes nothing more than a big challenge and fierce competition, which makes him perfect for SLAM.

Provident CRM SB20 World Championship
On the second racing day, third day overall here in Dun Laoghaire the waves were still big and the winds remained in top teens and twenties. After a short waiting ashore the fleet was sent to the water where the start of Race 4 was called at 13:15.

After two general recalls in about 20 knots of breeze we were under way.

After the first racing day team AP Hotels & Resorts were sitting 7th with a 5th, one win and a 22nd result, which now became their discard. So what do we know about them? That they come from Portugal, from a picturesque town and a sailing mecca called Cascais. The local Club has been running Cascais Winter Series for about 10 years now. The events became so popular that many Class sailors move their boats there for the cold season back at home.

And that’s where they all meet AP Hotels & Resorts skipper Jose Paulo Ramada. Even if he doesn’t start a regatta with a win on the first day, his name will be among the top results by the end of it.

After two days and five races that give one discard the points game kicks in. We witness the top two teams tied on points with the third only 1 point away from them. With lighter winds on the forecast, let’s see how the game unfolds and who gets the gaming right.

Current top 5 leaders:
1. AP Hotels & Resort - Jose Paulo Ramada, Artem Basalkin, Goncalo Lopes, Carlota Gala - Club Naval de Cascais (10 pts)
2. Xcellent - John Pollard, Jack Wetherell, Henry Wetherell - Royal Torbay YC (10 pts)
3. Glasgow Kiss - Nils Razmilovic, David Salembier, Nik Burfoot - RHKYC (11 pts)
4. Solyd Sailing Team/ SailCascais - Vasco Serpa, Diogo Pinto, Nathan Van Steenberge - CNCascais (21 pts)
5. Ares - Will Sargent, Eddie Reid, Ed Broadby, Eirni Marios - Derwent Sailing Squadron (24 pts)

Battle for the Bosphorus about to Begin
The 21st edition of the Bosphorus Cup is about to begin, as an international fleet of racing yachts converges on Istanbul, Turkey's ancient maritime city. Once discovered, sailors return year after year to race on a stretch of water that usually is closed to all but commercial vessels. With special permission to sail on the spectacular Bosphorus Strait for four days from 22 to 25 September, around 900 sailors from 10 nations will enjoy some of the most challenging but rewarding racing in this spectacular setting in the heart of Istanbul. The slogan for the Bosphorus Cup: 'Istanbul is Sailing'.

With 73 boats entered, the fleet will be divided into eight categories including five IRC divisions, ORC, sportsboats and cruising boats. After an opening day on 22 September, the first around-the-cans races take place off Caddebostan on Friday 23 September. Saturday 24 September sees the fleet take part in the Bosphorus Race, as the sailors take on the mighty Strait, spanned by three spectacular suspension bridges. Finally on Sunday 25 September it's back to Caddebostan to complete the series of races and see who becomes the overall winner of the Bosphorus Cup 2022.

The density of commercial traffic - cargo ships and oil tankers for example - is more than three times that of the Suez or Panama Canals, so securing permission to hold an annual yacht race in these economically vital waters has not been easy. -- Andy Rice

British set to launch test boat
The 'LEQ12' test boat is the team's first design and construction project since partnering with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team

When the British America's Cup syndicate INEOS Britannia signed off on the Protocol for AC37 they made certain that, in addition to the obligatory purchase of an AC40, the Cup rules allowed the teams the option of building their own scaled down development boats.

In official America's Cup language this type of sailing boat (or, in fact, towing platform) - which must be longer than six metres and no more than 12 metres - is known as an LEQ12 (standing for 'less or equal to 12').

This Autumn will see the British team launch their LEQ12 at their newly commissioned training base in Palma, Mallorca where the team expects to be based until next summer.

The British test boat is codenamed T6 and has been constructed at Carrington Boats on the English south coast - the same builder as the team's two AC75s from the last Cup. -- Justin Chisholm

Golden Globe Race, High and Lows, Snakes and Ladders
Damien Guillou, the French favourite for the Golden Globe Race made it through the Lanzarote Rubicon Marina film drop under his biggest spinnaker on a tight reach, this morning. A wind vane repair returning to Les Sables d'Olonne had cost him six days on the rest of the fleet. The last 12 twelve days have been an impressive comeback. He is consistently posting the top 24 hour distances of the fleet, having already caught up with the other French sailor Arnaud Gaist and the Australian mariner and GGR 2018 Mark Sinclair "Captain Coconut".

A lack of weather information this week from a defective Weather Fax, and a high-pressure system with light winds, while the wind came back in the south, favouring the leaders, hampered his efforts to catch-up. The leader is 700 miles ahead. The mid-fleet pack is only 3 to 4 days ahead.

Another impressive comeback is Kirsten Neuschäfer (SA) who exited the Bay of Biscay in 10th position. She did not hide her disappointment at being 6th at the Lanzarote gate. She has now joined the lead pack in 5th position and has been working very hard, spending a lot of time at the helm of Minnehaha, to catch up. This morning, she averaged 7 knots over the last 24 hours, clocking 170 miles and gaining 55 miles over her closest competitor Abhilash Tomy (IND)!

With strong Northerlies today where Minnehaha and Kirsten excel, there's no doubt she will close further onto the leaders. The other South African in the race, Jeremy Bagshaw, 6th in the fleet sailing the smallest and lightest yacht in the fleet, posted the second-best performance over 24 hours with 154 miles, nearly 6,5 knots average, clearly pushing Oleanna in those favourable conditions.

The 18 Footer League's Spectator Ferry
Circa 1935. Click on image for photo gallery.

18 Footer League Eighty-seven years of continuous tradition will continue next month when the Australian 18 Footers League's iconic 18 footer spectator ferry will again follow all the club's racing on Sydney Harbour.

On Sunday, October 16, the League will conduct Race 1 of the annual Spring Championship, which is a seven-race championship series contested by a fleet of around 20 teams, which will continue each Sunday until its finale on Sunday, November 20.

The incredible Australian tradition goes back to January 1892 when the a leading Sydney retailer, named Mark Foy, who was also a keen sailor as well as being a very successful businessman with an acute eye for promotion, formulated his plan to popularise sailing as a sport on Sydney Harbour.

A critical component of his plan was a spectator ferry, which would become a floating grandstand to give patrons a close up view of the action-packed racing.

The success of Foy's plan was instant and has maintained its relevance to 18ft Skiff racing over the following 130 years with spectator ferries still following the Australian 18 Footers League's 'modern boat' racing each Sunday during each Australian summer season.

When the NSW 18 Footers Sailing League (now known as the Australian 18 Footers League) was established in 1935, the newly-formed club began to conduct its races each Sunday.

It was a situation which created the greatest era of 18 Footer ferry patronage since Mark Foy's first day. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.
