Aspire wins on wild and windy Wednesday in Cannes
On the second day of the 2022 5.5 Metre French Open at the Regates Royales in Cannes, Aspire (POL 17, Mateusz Kusznierewicz, Przemysław Gacek, Flavio Marazzi) has extended its lead to two points over Otto (NOR 68, Bent Christian Wilhelmsen, Herve Cunningham, Lasse Berthelsen) with New Moon III (BAH 25, Mark Holowesko, Christoph Burger, Peter Vlasov) one point behind in third.

Despite hopes of three good races with a solid forecast, only one race was possible on the second day. After the fleet headed out early, the predicted strong wind took a while to arrive, but when it did, it picked up very quickly to 20 knots with big waves.

Aspire led all the way round to win. New Moon III had to restart after being judged early and initially trailed round the first mark in fifth. But a prudent inshore tack on the second beat realised a 15 degree shift, which combined with great speed and height, moved them up to second at the top, which they held onto down to the finish. Otto rounded the top mark in second, but after New Moon III passed them and a few downwind problems, finally crossed in third.

Top five results after 3 races
1. Aspire (POL 17, Mateusz Kusznierewicz Przemysław Gacek, Flavio Marazzi) 5
2. Otto (NOR 68, Bent Christian Wilhelmsen Herve Cunningham, Lasse Berthelsen) 6
3. New Moon III (BAH 25, Mark Holowesko Christoph Burger, Peter Vlasov) 8
4. No Stress (SUI 201/GER 122, Jorg Sonntag Jacob Rek, Lina Urbat) 15
5. Pungin (SUI 213, Hans-Peter Schmid Gilbert Durr, Walter Durr) 17

Double Mixed Offshore World Championship
Photo by MMNRT /SGallegati. Click on image to enlarge.

Double Mixed Offshore The Double Mixed Offshore World Championship, organized by SSI with the support of Marina Militare and Difesa Servizi SPA, started this morning at 12.30 local time: leaving from the Slovenian city of Portoroz , the regatta will take the crews on a 252-mile offshore course across the middle and Northern Adriatic.

To push the ten Beneteau Figaro 3s supplied by the organization across the starting line, the first gusts of a Bora wind expected to increase significantly during the day: these conditions will challenge the competitors on their approach towards Ancona, a real mark rounding of the course, before returning towards Slovenia. The weather forecast for the next few hours calls for intense and gusty breezes on the Eastern side of the Adriatic which, after sunset, can be replaced by lighter winds from the East, to then leave room for the typical Adriatic thermal breeze regimes.

In line with forecasts, about five hours after departure, the fleet remains close to the Croatian coast, near the city of Rovinj: the group is currently led by the French crew (Loison/Raguenau), but within less than a mile are also Team Italia (Zorzi/Di Monaco), Team Uruguay (Waksman/Fontanesi) and Team Belgium (Faguet/Gerckens), first on the starting line this morning.

Sixty eight years young - Tre Golfi Sailing week
Tre Golfi Sailing week Next year will see the 68th edition of a spectacular Mediterranean regatta with even more spectacular race courses...

The quest for the perfect race week experience is not easy. Where can you find in only one week the challenge of navigation and seamanship that comes with distance racing and the thrill of boat-on-boat action in competitive inshore racing? Tre Golfi Sailing Week held over 13-20 May 2023 may be the answer to this quest.

Nearly 140 entries from more than a dozen nations participated in 2022 for the 67th edition of the race, a growth trend that validates the attractive qualities of this increasingly international event. This is a regatta with competent and professional event and race management, easy logistics, a location known for its scenery, pleasant weather and agreeable ambience, numerous social events to entertain the teams when not racing, and a position in the yachting calendar that fits well in the season of Mediterranean sailing events. Championship trophies and Rolex watches as prizes are also a nice feature.

Ireland's West Coast Arctic Sailing Fan Logs Tenth Iceland Visit And Third To Greenland
Seldom seen, never forgotten……as recorded on one of Teddy’s ten Arctic cruises, the rarely fully visible Beerenberg on Jan Mayen is one of the most epic sights in high latitudes cruising. Click on image to enlarge.

Beerenberg Nick Kats of Clifden and originally America is always looking to the north for new cruises with his hefty 39ft Danish-built Bermudan ketch Teddy. And when we say "north", we mean Arctic voyaging and a continuing fascination with Iceland and Greenland, for Nick and the Teddy every so often shape their course for high latitudes in much the same way most of the rest of us would contemplate another cruise to West Cork.

When Teddy with her international crew returned recently to Clifden without fuss or fanfare, it marked the completion of Nick's tenth visit to Iceland, and his third detailed cruise in East Greenland. And as his voyages have included going on north to Jan Mayen, one of his crew managed to get a crystal-clear image of that remote island's often fog-shrouded icy peak of Beerenberg, which is a rare pearl indeed.

In fact, thanks to his online-recruited crew inevitably including some top class photographers, the collected images of the Teddy Arctic cruises make for an impressive and informative display. You can get the flavour of it in this year's cruise blog Teddytoarctic2022.blogspot.com. And "flavour" is the operative word , for in addition to many other interests, Nick is a nutritionist and an organic grower at his place in West Connemara, which gives added insight to the many meals – some of them decidedly experimental – consumed during the course of this well-fed venture.

AC40 Up Up And Away
It was up up and away on a very successful maiden sail for Emirates Team New Zealand's AC40 on the familiar waters of the 'back paddock' between Auckland's Waiheke Island and Howick Beachlands.

After a long tow out behind the team's hydrogen powered chase boat 'Chase Zero', the sails hoisted and sheeted on, it took just a handful of minutes for helmsman Nathan Outteridge to go from a cautious displacement mode to popping the AC40 up onto its foils and off on starboard tack at over 20+ knots in the light 8-10 knots of breeze.

It was Outteridge's first day sailing a foiling monohull and it didn't disappoint, "It was obviously a very successful day, it was an impressive boat to sail for my first time sailing this type of boat. A little unnerving when trying to build speed, but once you get a bit of speed and the foil engages it goes from about 10 knots to 20 knots in about 5 seconds. So both pretty impressive, the acceleration and the reliability."

Outteridge, Ray Davies, Nick Burridge and Sam Meech onboard throughout the highly productive full day on the water, initially went through a selection of straight line runs before throwing down their first tack successfully staying up on the foils and carrying on upwind.

The speeds of the AC40 were impressive in a relatively light breeze reaching a top speed of over 34 knots downwind and 27 knots upwind in the steady NW breeze.

The auto pilot is a key component for the Women's and Youth America's Cup regattas and was impressive to the team from the outset explains Dan Bernasconi, "The auto pilot on day one has been fantastic, so with a smaller crew and less experienced crew on these boats for the Women's and Youth racing, the auto pilot will be a really important feature."

UK IRC Nationals to visit Poole
For the first time, the Royal Ocean Racing Club's GBR IRC National Championship in 2024 will not take place from the club's base in Cowes but will form part of the International Paint Poole Regatta. The 26th edition of the IRC Nationals, one of the major annual regattas for the international rating system operated by the RORC, will take place on Poole Bay over 25-27th May 2024.

Held biennially, International Paint Poole Regatta as usual will be organised by the Combined Yacht Clubs of Poole and Poole Yacht Racing Association, with the title sponsor International Paint. This year's event included the IRC Southern Area Championship.

One of the oldest sailing events in the world, the Poole and Bournemouth Regatta, as it was originally known, was first held 1849. At this time yachting was a popular pastime of royalty and the aristocracy with clubs being set up and regattas held around the UK's entire coastline.

Originally the Poole and Bournemouth Regatta was raced for The Canford Cup, a George IV silver vase made in 1822. The trophy was first awarded in 1849 to Gleam, of P Roberts, Esq of the Southern Yacht Club in Southampton. It subsequently disappeared for decades, until it was recovered in 2015. Recently it has been won by Sam Laidlaw's Quarter Tonner Aguila in 2016, Richard Powell's Marvel in 2018 and this year by Ed Wilton's Who's Next.

Raceboats Only YYACHTS Y7. POA EUR.

The Y7 was created in collaboration with US designer Bill Tripp, considered one of the world's best naval architects. Our goal was to combine comfortable sailing performance with competitive sailing performance, even on the regatta course.

In conditions where other yachts still use their engines, the sails are already set on the Y7. A displacement of only 29 tons and almost 300 square meters of sail area at wind make move the yacht even in light winds; Y7 owners don't have to worry about the perfect weather all the time.

All halyards, sheets and stretchers run hidden to the steering columns - so the helmsman can operate the Y7 alone at any time. This is not a matter of course for a 70-foot yacht and allows the owner to sail with a very small crew or even on his own.
