Rolex Swan Cup concludes the 2022 ClubSwan Racing season
The 2022 Rolex Swan Cup signed-off in style on Sunday with deciding races across all the classes settling the final positions after a week of intense but friendly racing.

Teams competing in the four ClubSwan One-Design classes settled matters with two closely fought windward-leeward races, while the varied and diverse 56-strong fleet of Swans taking part in the Rating classes took on a long coastal race around the La Maddalena archipelago, taking in the islands of Santo Stefano, Caprera and La Maddalena itself.

The level of competition across all classes was self-evident, from the Maxi Rating class of 100ft-plus racers, through the one-design classes and all the way to the 22-strong Swan Grand Prix class and the Classic

Nowhere was the competitive element clearer than in the Rating classes, and no more so than in the Maxi class where the Swan 90 Freya took the class on countback from Vincente Torres' Swan 80 Plis-Play, both edging out Pierluigi Loro Piana's brand new ClubSwan 80 My Song.

The performance of yachts - including the ClubSwan 50s Hatari and Earlybird - helped Germany to the top of The Nations League 2022 table, repeating their success of last year. Italy again took second place, with Monaco completing the podium after edging out Austria and Belgium, who finished only a point apart after the season-long competition concluded in Porto Cervo.

Rolex Big Boat San Francisco, Californi, USA: Final exams are stern for a reason and the final day of racing at the 2022 Rolex Big Boat Series, hosted by St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, California, delivered stiff - if not downright nautical - conditions. Crews arrived at dock call to seldom-seen southerly airs, big puffs and scattered rain. While this year's Rolex Big Boat Series had plenty of breeze-on racing, the hounds howled a rare tune today, with uncommon Cityfront-created lees, big swells, squalls and gusts that registered in the low-30 knot range.

Fortunately for boat-battered bodies, squally conditions moderated as the day progressed.

Heading into today's racing the eight classes competing, six class wins - including five perpetual trophies and three Rolex Submariner timepieces - were still up for grabs. Only Scott Sellers, Geoff McDonald, and Harrison Turner's J/70 1FA team and Don Jesberg's Cal 40 Viva crew could rest ashore, thanks to sterling leaderboard results that, after six races, both read 1-1-1-1-1-1. 1FA remained dockside, while Viva hoisted sail in the sporty conditions.

Following longstanding StFYC tradition, some crews elected to drop flowers at Buoy A in remembrance of recently departed sailors and friends before the regatta's three race committee teams sent their respective fleets on a single long-course Bay tour to cap off four days of world-class sailboat racing.

This year StFYC presented a new Yacht Club Team Trophy, recognizing the top three boats sailing from the same yacht club - one from an ORC class, one from a One Design class and the third from any class. The trio that earned the best cumulative results hails from San Francisco Yacht Club: David Halliwill's Peregrine, Randy Hecht's Niuhi and Don Jesberg's Viva.

BSI Rigging looks at the attraction of the Golden Globe Race
BSI Rigging Jean-Luc Van den Heede, maths teacher, full-time sailor, and now on the Cape Horners roll of honour. We spoke with Jean-Luc ahead of the Golden Globe Race 2022 to find out what attracted him after five circumnavigations to compete in the 2018 edition.

"This is a race completely different to every other race," commented Jean-Luc. "It's not about the money. The race was anybody's to win. The sailor who prepares their boat the best would win."

He talked about his preparation and how if differed from other campaigns. "In the Vendee there is a team of people around you, this was different. You are competing as a team of one." He refers to the race as sailing in its simplest form, just the skipper, the boat, and a windvane. No electronic aids.

Ahead of the GGR 2018 his Rustler 36 had an extensive refit of the mast, rigging, sails, ropes, and engine. "Arrive at the start line as the best prepared boat in the fleet. Choose your equipment wisely," explains Jean-Luc.

Jean-Luc had experienced the reliability of BSI Rigging, Moonlight Hatches and Easy Blocks. One of his yachts circumnavigated the world five times plus 10 transats. He knows the equipment he needs.

During the GGR 2018, Jean-Luc capsized. A turn of events that could have put him out of the race. However, due to his preparation this capsize wasn't catastrophic. He continued. He won the race.

Was Jean-Luc tempted to compete in the Golden Globe Race 2022?

A Catamaran European Championships
A Cat Europeans. Photos by Gordon Upton. Click on image for photo gallery.

A Catamaran The final day of many championship regattas can sometimes be a foregone conclusion. One sailor can totally dominate, leaving the rest to battle for the crumbs. At Garda, although a few looked pretty much a shoe-in, neither fleet overnight leader could rest on their laurels. A breakage, an OCS, a capsize could snatch away their potential crowns.

Looking up towards the North, it looked possible that a storm could be forming. The wind had started to increase as though it could happen. A storm is not anything you want to be out on Garda in. All the sailors would be sent ashore as fast as they can. The storm would tend to suck air North up the lake. The result, especially for thoroughbred racers such as the A-Cat, could be fatal. The whole fleet arriving at the launch site more or less at once would result in boats running into the rocks, each other or ending up on the lee shore. But fortunately it blew off North, up the valley. And a few were probably blissfully unaware.

As the wind had swung more to the left than previous days, most of the fleet decided to stock with the left rather that the usual 'bang right and sail at the cliffs' tactics Garda tends to offer. That of course didn't stop Scott Anderson AUS 31 and Marek Zabrowski POL 2 from doing that. At the top though, it was that little German Fox, Moritz Weis GER 121 coming in from the left, who led Scotty around the mark, followed by Gustavo Doreste ESP 72. The rest of the race consisted of those little battles that you tend to get amongst sailors of a similar level, and is always talked about ashore. Moritz got the bullet, Scotty 2nd and Gustavo 3rd.

Their final race saw the wind pick up a bit more maybe 15-16kts, although well in the envelope of the fleet this time, it was Champagne sailing again. -- Gordon Upton

Yes we can! - 52 Super Series
52 Super Series Four years in the making, or five if you count an introductory toein- the water 2017 season during which the Plattners' first TP52 Phoenix raced the IRC Europeans and the Copa del Rey, and so Phoenix winning Puerto Portals 52 Super Series Sailing Week on the Bay of Palma was getting to feel overdue. So too seeing Sled second - with owner-driver Mr Okura steering after missing all of last season - and Ergin Imre's Provezza taking the third step. Portals certainly delivered plenty of good cheer and smiling faces.

Provezza have had a tough season so far, starting with enforced last-minute crew changes in Baiona due to health issues and a forestay fitting failure which meant missing several races. Then in Cascais their mood remained overcast with bright spells; but the confidence and speed were all back on the Bay of Palma.

SailGP Season 4
The fourth season of SailGP will deliver more events than ever as the league's season-on-season expansion continues at impressive pace. SailGP's national teams will compete around the world with the aim to reach fourteen events - nearly triple the number of events seen in Season 1 - in a bumper season that will span 14 months.

SailGP Season 4 will launch in Chicago on June 17-18, 2023, in a city where this summer crowds packed onto Navy Pier for an extremely successful Season 3 edition of the T-Mobile United States Sail Grand Prix. That event will be followed by a northern hemisphere Summer sweep across Europe, featuring a return to fan-favorite Season 2 location Taranto, Southern Italy, on September 23-24 and a third visit for the league to Cádiz in Andalucía, for the Spain Sail Grand Prix on October 14-15.

After the planned five events in Europe, the league will head to the Middle East before going on to Asia, where the second edition of the Singapore Sail Grand Prix will take place on January 13-14, 2024.

Sydney will then host SailGP for a record fifth time as the KPMG Australia Sail Grand Prix takes place on February 17-18, 2024 before the league heads to New Zealand. In Season 4, the action switches from Christchurch to Auckland as part of a four-season, alternating multi-city hosting arrangement and Auckland will play host on March 16-17.

SailGP Season 4 will then finish back in the northern hemisphere, stopping for the Bermuda Sail Grand Prix on May 4-5 before a further two North America events, including a potential first home event for the Canada SailGP Team following the launch of a competitive bid process earlier this year. The season will finish July 13-14, 2024, and culminate with the Grand Final in the United States.

GGR entrant Guy deBoer runs onto rocks
Guy deBoer (USA) crashes into rocks at night on the north coast of Fuerteventura, Las Palmas in the Canaries, his yacht now stranded but he is safe. Salvage under investigation. Picture Credit: GGR2022 / Alex Craig. Click on image to enlarge.

Guy deBoer Lanzarote: It was South African GGR entrant Kirsten Neuschäfer (SA) who relayed Guy deBoer's VHF radio Mayday call to GGR Race Control on Friday morning at 03:10 am UTC. Guy's Tashiba 36 had run aground on the North coast of Fuerteventura, just 10 miles from the Lanzarote Marina Rubicon film drop gate he had passed a few hours before. He had activated his EPIRB and at 04:24 UTC rang the GGR Race control on his Sat phone.

"Spirit" was sitting on rocks, away from the beach, tilting 45 degrees, being pounded by heavy seas crashing over the boat. The surf was pushing her slowly forward grinding over rocks. Guy who was in constant contact with Salvamento Maritimo, the local Rescue Coordination Center and GGR Race Control, was in a serious situation. He had his life raft ready, but decided to remain inside Spirit, which was holding up. He planned to wait for daylight since he could not see the coast. The conditions for a safe use of the life raft, or exit onto the rocks beaten by the surf were not right.

At 04:10 UTC the MRCC Las Palmas informed GGR Control that first responders were on the beach, 50 metres from the boat sitting on the bedrock. Conditions were difficult and Guy decided not to evacuate the yacht. At 04:36 UTC Guy finally abandoned his yacht by foot, greatly assisted by the local police and firefighters. A Government salvage tow boat was already en route towards them. Guy was taken to a local hotel without injuries.

Film "The Sailor"
Viewable for free (with a sign up).

Slovak director Lucia Kasova tells the story of an extraordinary individual who ends up alone and lonely in the twilight years of his illustrious life.

We meet the protagonist, Paul Johnson, at 80 years old, living on his small boat, CHERUB, anchored off the island of Carriacou in the Southern Caribbean. Just by looking at him, one would hardly guess that once upon a time, he was a famous boat designer: an old man with the eyes of a child, he is now living on a diet of beer and vodka, his body giving out just like his vessel.

It's a slow, delicious and melancholy journey, watching this film. The access that the producers gained to a very private life is intriguing. The charming Johnson is another of these Bluewater legends, no doubt with skeletons in his closet, but despite being grumpy and opinionated we find ourselves wanting to help ease the old man's journey into a painless oblivion.

If you're looking for maritime action and adventure then this isn't the film for you. But if you are interested in trying to understand what makes some people choose a life outside of our established norms, you will no doubt be rewarded.
