Negri / Lambertenghi (ITA) Win Star Worlds
Marblehead, USA: A solid third place in the final race from Italy's Diego Negri/Sergio Lambertenghi was more than enough to reward them with gold at the 2022 Star Worlds.

For Negri, winning the 100th Anniversary Championship marks a successful defense of his 2021 Worlds title, while Lambertenghi debuts his hands on the trophy. A return to light shifty conditions for the final day was the perfect conclusion for Negri/Lambertenghi.

Negri already has a bucket full of Star World Championship medals, adding gold in 2022 and 2021 to his three silvers (2016, 2014, 2008) and bronze (2015). A Star Worlds victory has until today proved elusive for Lambertenghi, after two silvers (2016, 2014) and a bronze (2015).

The final race was finely balanced with four teams in contention for the podium. The final race was a battle of the big names jockeying for position. While out of contention for a medal, Mateusz Kusznierewicz (POL)/Bruno Prada (USA) led to the first mark, chased by Negri/Lambertenghi, and Croatia's Tonci Stipanovic/Tudor Bilic, who had their work cut out to close the points needed for a podium finish.

Today's bronze medal represents the seventh time Cayard has stood on the Star Worlds podium, and it was thirty-four years ago in 1988 that he won gold with Steve Erickson. More recent glory days for Kleen saw him secure top spot last year with Diego Negri, and previously in 2014 with Robert Stanjek. -- Rachele Vitello

Fernandez and Giovanelli take European Finn titles in Spain
Miguel Fernandez Vasco, from Spain, has won the 2022 Open Finn European Championship after one final race was possible on the final day at Club Nautic Hospitalet-Vandellòs, at Hospitalet de l'Infant, Spain. Italy's Giacomo Giovanelli won the 2022 Finn European Masters title, while Laurent Hay of France dropped to third overall and second in the Masters.

With an early start planned to get two races ion the forecast finally proved correct and 25-35 knots of wind delayed racing until early afternoon, and then promptly died when the fleet was sent out. Finally, a sea breeze developed, and the final race was started just 15 minutes before the 15.00 cut off.

Lawrence Crispin, from Britain, led the race all the way to the end of the second downwind, when Florian Faucheux, from France, found the best side to sail through and take the win. Crispin crossed second with Italy's Matteo Iovenitti, sailing another great race to cross third.

The close of this championship brings to an end a fantastic international championship season and 2023 already beckons with the Finn Gold Cup in Miami, the Open Europeans on Balaton the World Masters in Greece, The Silver Cup on Como and the European Masters on Garda. -- Robert Deaves

Corinthian Yacht Club Wins 2022 Resolute Cup
Newport, Rhode Island, USA: After displaying remarkable consistency across a range of conditions over the first three days of the 2022 Resolute Cup, Corinthian Yacht Club of Marblehead, Mass., decided to dispense with the pleasantries. The team representing the storied northeast yacht club won both races today to emphatically claim the Resolute Cup and a berth in the 2023 Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup.

The unique format of the two-stage event - which features two different fleets of equalized boats - has traditionally favored sailors that have been here before. But skipper Wade Waddell, all of 25, and his team of Doug Sabin, Duncan Swain and Miranda Bakos - Resolute Cup rookies, all four - turned that paradigm on its head by finishing 14 of 16 races inside of the top five and winning the regatta by nine points.

As the defending champion of the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, Southern Yacht Club already has a berth in next year's event. LeBlanc was the only one of the four sailors with previous experience in this event or Invitational Cup.

While there is no longer any obligation for the winner of the Resolute Cup to compete in the Invitational Cup, Waddell says that was a big part of the reason for Corinthian's participation this year.

The next edition of the the Resolute Cup will take place in September 2024. The request for invitation process will be announced in 2023.

470 European Championships: Sweden Secure Gold After Match Race With Spain
Anton Dahlberg & Lovisa Karlsson (SWE) had to fight hard for the gold medal but the Swedes came through to win the 470 European Championships in Cesme, Turkey. Jordi Xammar & Nora Brugman (ESP) had their opportunities to seize gold during a tense medal race in 16 to 18 knot southerly breeze, but in the end they couldn't quite get past the Swedes and had to settle for silver. Giacomo Ferrari & Bianca Caruso (ITA) bounced back from a disastrous start to climb up to fourth in the medal race and take the bronze medal.

The Swedes had hinted that they would go on a match race offensive against Xammar & Brugman, the Spanish being the only team that could take the gold away from them. So it proved, with SWE349 going on the attack after the five-minute warning signal. At start time, both boats crossed the line on port tack behind the rest of the fleet. So long as Sweden stayed close to ESP44, the gold would be theirs.

One of the most enduring images from Olympic competition is the moment Paul Foerster & Kevin Burnham (USA) crossed the finish line of the Olympic Regatta at Athens 2004 as winners of Olympic gold. Aged 48 at the time, Kevin rolled back the years to beat his younger rivals and celebrated with an exuberant backflip out of the boat. In November 2020, Kevin died before his time, aged just 63, after a long battle with pulmonary disease.

Today at the prizegiving at Arkas Cesme Sailing Club, Dahlberg & Karlsson received the Kevin Burnham Trophy along with their winners' gold medals. "Kevin embodied everything that is great about 470 competition," said Andreas Kosmatopoulos, President of the International 470 Class Association. "He was a fierce competitor on the race course and was always having fun in the boat park. His enthusiasm was infectious and inspirational. In the 60-year history of the 470, Kevin was and will always be one of the great characters of our class." -- Andy Rice

Get Set for the Etchells World Championship
Cowes, IOW, United Kingdom: The glitterati of the sailing world has gathered in Cowes for the 2022 Etchells Worlds hosted by the Royal Yacht Squadron. At least ten past Etchells World Champions will be competing. No racing will take place on Monday 19th September to pay respect for the State Funeral of Her Majesty The Queen. Nine races are scheduled starting on Tuesday 20th September with five days of intense competition expected. A host of trophies will be awarded, and the 2022 Etchells World Champion will be decided.

42 teams are entered from Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, Switzerland, and the United States of America. Entry List on YachtScoring.com

Over half the entries are from the host nation Great Britain and Lawrie Smith's Mila (GBR 1502) is considered to be one of the favourites. This will be Smith's fourth Etchells Worlds, but he has yet to win the Founders Trophy. Mila was in fine form winning the Etchells Pre-Worlds and was top European team for the 2022 Etchells European Championship. Smith's team for the Worlds is past Fireball World Champion Richard Parslow, Portugal's Gonçalo Almeida Ribeiro, and 2017 Nacra 17 World Champion Ben Saxton.

Ante Razmilovic will be racing Swedish Blue (GBR 1438) at his seventh Etchells World Championship. Razmilovic has been runner-up on two occasions, 2014 and 2010. Swedish Blue's crew is Australian Noel Drennan runner-up in 2011, and Brian Hammersley who was third with Razmilovic in 2013. Swedish Blue was leading the 2022 Etchells Pre-Worlds going into the last race but retired after going aground.

Eight teams from the United States will be in action for the Etchells World Championship. The American teams boast five past Etchells World champions. Steve Benjamin won the Worlds in 2017 and will be racing in Cowes with two of his crew from that triumph; Dave Hughes and Ian Liberty. Steve Benjamin's Stella Blue (USA 1427) was the top international team at the 2022 Etchells European Championship but failed to shine at the Pre-worlds, placing 16th. However, nobody would be surprised if Benjamin wins the 2022 Etchells Worlds. -- Louay Habib

Defi Azimut
The Defi Azimut-Lorient Agglomeration 48 Hours served up the perfect short test for the 2022 IMOCA fleet, as the boats heading for The Ocean Race, and the majority in solo configuration, took on a triangle course in the Bay of Biscay.

In the four strong fully-crewed fleet, tackling a 545-nautical mile course, the 11th Hour Racing Team crew on board Mālama, skippered by the American sailor Charlie Enright, dominated from start to finish. In the solo division, it was another uncompromising display by Charlie Dalin on APIVIA, on a slightly shorter 505-mile track.

The races started with a nice medium-air downwind leg to the Azimut 1 mark, 215 miles southwest of Lorient, before the boats then reached in light winds to Azimut 2 - 200 miles due south of Lorient - before heading upwind to the finish in variable winds that increased for a while overnight.

For Paul Meilhat and his crew, it had been a mad rush to get the brand new Biotherm ready for the start and, in the end, they had to abandon the race short of the finish and head for Port-la-Foret because of problems with the winch unit in the cockpit.

n the 24-strong solo division, Charlie Dalin took the lead early on. He never looked back, despite having Thomas Ruyant in LinkedOut, who was second 48 minutes behind him, and Jeremie Beyou on the new Charal 2, who was third - another 9 minutes back - on his tail.

This was Dalin's third consecutive victory in the Class, following his win in this year's Guyader Bermudes 1000 Race in May and the Vendee Arctique in June.

The 2022 Defi Azimut concluded on Sunday with the traditional fun race around the Ile de Groix -- Ed Gorman

Yoann Richomme: "The Intensity Of The Racing In Class40 Is Very Close To What You See In Figaro"
On Friday morning Yoann Richomme took the second place in the Lamotte Malouine 40 24-hour race, an event which mustered 31 Class40s in Saint-Malo and runs until Sunday. The 2018 Class40 Route du Rhum winner was just over two minutes behind the winner, Corentin Douguet. Two hours after his arrival, Tip & Shaft spoke with the skipper of Paprec Arkéa, who is very busy, between preparing for the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe and building his new Imoca.

How was this 24 hour race?
It was a really intense format, with four course sections in 24 hours, including one, upwind, of more than 12 hours. This tack was a little complicated for me, I had a little trouble finding the right gears, Corentin (Douguet) did this section better, but I saw a lot of things in terms of the rig and sail settings that I can improve. Afterwards, it was very strategic, we constantly changed sails, with one gybe under spinnaker, one under gennaker and again under spinnaker to finish. We maneuvered a lot with a rough sea in which the boats were burying the bows, it was a real challenge to make the boat work and to prepare for the next maneuver. In the end, it wasn't so 'Rhum', in the sense that I think we did as many maneuvers in one day as on the whole Route du Rhum!

What was the difference in the standings?
It was a good tussle with five or six boats, the final ranking was mainly sorted on the reaching leg: the Lift 2 [Lombard design which he has, as has winner Corentin Douguet, editor's note] has a real advantage in these conditions, we were going much faster, almost a knot, it hurt the others! As for the win, it was decided on the upwind leg, Corentin took a 2-3 mile lead, he played quite well, because even if I got a little closer at the end, I was far enough from being able to overtake him.
