Shelter Island and Larchmont Rise to the Occasion, Punch Ticket to Resolute Cup Gold Fleet
Newport, R.I. USA: Mike Tyson is famous for saying that everyone has a good plan until they get punched in the mouth. For the Shelter Island Yacht Club team competing in the 2022 Resolute Cup, Day 1 wasn’t much different than a stiff jab from the former heavyweight champion. After six races and just one finish better than mid-fleet, the team was in ninth place, three places removed from a coveted spot in the Gold Fleet. With a two-time Olympian at the helm and a summer of practice to get ready, this wasn’t the way things were supposed to go for the venerable club at the eastern end of Long Island.

One of the unique aspects of the Resolute Cup is that the four-day event is really two separate regattas. The first two days is the Qualifying Series; the goal is simply to be top half in your respective fleet. That earns a spot in the Gold Fleet for the final two days of the event, and a chance at the Resolute Cup and the associated invitation to the 2023 Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup. Since the scores from the first half do not carry forward, it’s really a binary result, either a team makes the Gold Fleet or is relegated to the Silver Fleet.

The Shelter Island team is among the teams breathing a lot more easily this evening. Despite yesterday’s subpar performance, they maintained faith in their collective skill and teamwork. After four solid races today, including a pair of second-place finishes, Clark and her crew locked up sixth place in the Blue Fleet and a spot in the Gold Fleet, which starts tomorrow. -- Stuart Streuli

Big Breeze Shakes Up The Racetrack At Star Worlds
Strong winds kept the Star fleet postponed ashore, before easing enough to get race 4 underway at 1509 hours in 18 knots with some gusts up to 25 knots.

Hiking hard and sailing fast gave Luke Lawrence/Andrew Macrae (USA) race glory, with Paul Cayard (USA)/Frithjof Kleen (GER) coming in behind and third to Eric Doyle/Payson Infelise (USA). A 4th place was enough to maintain the overall lead for Diego Negri/Sergio Lambertenghi (ITA).

The race played out dramatically in the roller coaster conditions, with some thrilling downwind planing, a few dicey mark roundings and a lot of fun. Broken masts ended racing for several teams, including Mateusz Kusznierewicz (POL)/Bruno Prada (BRA) whose race wrapped up in the second downwind.

Four races down and four different winners, evidence enough of the calibre of teams competing. The leader board reads like a who’s who of sailing talent, with plenty of World Champions, Continental Champions and Olympic honors. Just two more races to crown the 2022 Star World Champions and there is plenty of unfinished business ahead.

Race 5 is scheduled to get underway at 1130 hours on Friday, September 16.

Provisional Top 10 Results - after Race 4

Royal Thames J/80s
Royal Thames J/80s RTYC are in process of replacing their fleet of 9 matched J/80s with a new fleet of 12 Sonars.

The J/80s are matched and well maintained as a fleet but are not in class as they are primarily used for team/match racing and therefore adapted with furling jibs and symmetric spinnakers.

They each have 4 wheel road trailers and an extensive inventory of sails – North mains, jibs and symmetric spinnakers. As they have been used for top level events the sails have been graded Gold, Silver and Bronze and there is a full set of each with Gold being in first class condition used only a few times a year.

There is also an extensive inventory of spares ranging from a brand new rudder and tiller, spare winches, masts and furlers etc etc.

The fleet is available immediately for sale and expressions of interest are invited either for the whole fleet or a lesser set of boats.

IRC pleases all at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup
The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup once again proved that the RORC/UNCL’s IRC rating system is thriving at one of the most prestigious events in the sailing calendar. This year’s event, organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in conjunction with the International Maxi Association, saw a return to a pre-pandemic fleet size with 37 boats competing under IRC across five classes. The longest - the four J Class yachts, Velsheda, Topaz, Ranger and Svea - raced under their own rule.

Among them was Roberto Lacorte’s 60ft FlyingNikka, the first ever flying maxi, based on AC75 technology, with flip-up T-foils to port and starboard and a single rudder with an adjustable elevator. The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup was the first event she has entered so to protect the fleet, she was given a conservative IRC TCC of 3.866, comfortably surpassing the previous record TCC - the ClubSwan 125 Skorpios' 2.149. FlyingNikka also sailed alone in Mini Maxi 0, starting last and sailing up through the fleet.

As usual IRC performed well across the fleet despite a range of conditions, from light winds at the start to 20+ knots on the Friday. This produced tight racing and varied winners, further supporting the benefit of a single number rating system.

In the largest class - the 13-strong Maxi (LH: 24.09-30.50m) across five races there were four winners ranging from the lowest rated, Massimiliano Florio's Southern Wind 82 Grande Orazio to one of the highest, David M. Leuschen's Wallycento Galateia. In her first ever race, Pier Luigi Loro Piana’s brand new ClubSwan 80 My Song, fitted with a canting keel and a single tack-able lifting daggerboard, scored her first bullet. However the outright victor was Lord Irvine Laidlaw's Reichel/Pugh 82 Highland Fling XI.

It was also supremely close in Mini Maxi 2 where Alessandro Del Bono’s Reichel/Pugh 78 Capricorno defended her title, just a point ahead of Luciano Gandini’s Mylius 80 FD Twin Soul B followed by Sven Wackerhagen's Wally 80 Rose and Jean-Pierre Barjon's new Botin 65 Spirit of Lorina. -- James Boyd

Miguel Fernandez extends lead at Finn Europeans in Spain
Spain’s Miguel Fernandez Vasco has extended his lead at the 2022 Open Finn European Masters at Club Nàutic Hospitalet-Vandellòs, at Hospitalet de l'Infant, Spain, after a long day on Thursday with two more races eventually sailed. Laurent Hay from France remains second while Paul McKenzie from Australia remains third.

It was a day defined by changeable winds and a close and intense battle between Fernandez and Hay, resulting in Fernendez taking a two point lead after four races. The race wins went to Italy’s Giacomo Gionvanelli and Fernandez.

Race 3 was a close fight between Hay, Fernandez and Gionvanelli, with each of them having a turn at leading the race. Gionvanelli led at the first top mark, but then lost the lead downwind only to retake it on the second upwind to win the race.

The next race was led at the top by Finland’s Kristian Sjöberg, however he was one of five boats picking up a black flag. Eventually the race turned into a fight between Fernandez, Hay and Italy’s Matteo Iovenitti. Fernandez secured the lead on the second upwind and held on to take his first win of the championship, while Iovenitti pipped Hay on the line to take second.

The event is now at the half way stage. Two more races are scheduled for Friday. Racing continues until Saturday.

J/70 European Championship Day Three: Magnifique!
Hyeres France: Spectacular conditions allowed three races for the middle day of the J/70 European Championship in Hyeres France. Winds began at an average of 8 knots, but came on beautifully during the second contest, ending around 17 knots. Six races are complete, with the discard now in effect. Richard Witzel’s Rowdy (USA) surged to the overall lead, tossing a 32, and ending Thursday with 33 net points. Top Corinthian Ahmet Eker’s Eker Kaymak (TUR) is lurking only one point behind in second place. Jonathan Calascione’s Calypso (GBR) compiled consistent scores on the day to move into third place at 37 points and also commanding the One-Pro Division. Laura Grondin’s Dark Energy (USA) is always in the hunt, currently in fourth place.

Sunny skies returned Thursday along with continued warm temperatures. The leaders in the opening battle were Nick Phillips’ Chaotic (GBR), Enrique Freire Faria’s Marnatura (ESP) and Tommaso de Bellis Viti’s Five for Fighting 4.0 (ITA). Witzel’s Rowdy made their move in the next match, keeping Thomas Studer’s Jerry (SUI) and de Bellis Viti’s Five for Fighting 4.0 behind. As the breeze piped up for the last race of the day, Calascione’s Calypso thrived, ahead of Jorge Martinez Doreste’s Can Marles Car Solutions (ESP) and Craig Burlton’s Spitfire (GBR).

Forty-one boats are participating fully amateur and 19 with one professional, out of 88 total. Nineteen nations are on hand: AUS, BRA, DEN, ESP, EST, FRA, GBR, GER, IRL, ITA, MEX, MON, NED, NOR, POR, SUI, SWE, TUR, USA.

Day 1 Master’s Division at Hobie 16 Worlds
Costa Brava Pirineu de Girona, Spain: Day 1 of racing got underway at the 2022 Hobie 16 world championships with the 38 teams competing in the masters division. The Hobie 16 world championships are composed of multiple preliminary events starting with the masters, followed by the women, youth, grand masters and finally the open world championships. All the boats are provided by Hobie Cat Company, we have 50 brand new identical boats that are used throughout the competition. It’s a huge convenience for sailors who travel long distances, as they only need to bring their personal gear. These boats are all brand new and their was feel in the air of adjusting these news boats for the conditions.

After a long on-shore postponement while we waited for the breeze to fill, boats were sent out at 1:45 in 7 knots of breeze that quickly built to 10-12 knots for the East-Southeast. There was a good on swell running which made for some very wet conditions on board but that is something Hobie Cats were designed for.

Three races were completed on the first day in some beautiful sailing conditions.

After the first day, Cam Owen / Susan Ghent (AUS) lead followed by European champions, Stefan Griesmeyer / Caterina Degli Uberti (ITA) and Darren Smith / Claire Bisgood (AUS).

Masters racing continues through September 18, when the next division starts.

Saltash & Diamonds
The one and only genius Jack Holt with Cosmo Kramer hairstyle. Click on image to enlarge.

Jack Holt The Diamond has been called the ‘Mother of all Sport Boats’. Sadly, this fast lightweight day-sailor has almost disappeared, taken over by the Soling and Etchell. They also have been superseded by boats like the J70. The class has an interesting design and social history. The 1950’s was the time of UK Prime Minister Harold Macmillan’s ‘you’ve never had it so good’ after the austerity of WW2. Yachting World magazine wanted to introduce ‘everyman’ to sailing and break the perceived elitism around yachting. They wanted an inexpensive stitch-and-glue plywood keelboat, capable of being home-built by D-I-Y enthusiasts. Jack Holt was commissioned to draw the new design. He came up with a 30ft double chine design with alloy spars and a powerful 313 sq foot rig. This light keel boat could be quickly lifted out by crane rather than rail hauled.

Yachting World Keelboat #1 ZEST was presented ‘on the pool’ at Earls Court Boat Show 1961 in London and in Yachting World magazine as A-BUILD-HER-YOURSELF DESIGN BY JACK HOLT. In 1967 the boat was renamed the YW Diamond. Holt followed on using the same construction technique with his Daily Mirror Dinghy. See SWS REFLECTIONS and MIRRORS. -- By Charlie Salter
