Team Eker Kaymak Rises at J/70 European Championship
Hyeres France: Two more races were completed (now three total) on day two of the J/70 European Championship in Hyeres France with fluctuating wind and recurring showers. The constant for the day was the Turkish team Eker Kaymak, helmed by Ahmet Eker, who notched a 2, 5 for 14 total points and the lead. This all-Corinthian team gained a 15-point advantage over second place Tim Ryan's Vamos (AUS) who is also the top boat in the One-Pro Division. Forty-one boats are participating fully amateur and 19 with one professional. Nick Phillips' Chaotic (GBR) moved into third overall with 31 points.

Eighty-eight J/70s took to the water on time at 11:00 am, however a pending line of storms sent them onshore briefly. Wednesday's pair of races were held in variable wind, choppy seas and intermittent showers. Martin Dent's Jelvis (GBR) took the first gun, chased by Eker and Gulboy Guryel's Denizcik (TUR). Vasco Serpa's Fake News (POR) led the pack back to shore after race three, along with two Swedish groups: Patrik Forsgren's Team Pro4u and Jon Sindeman's Pandion Racing.

Nineteen nations are on hand: AUS, BRA, DEN, ESP, EST, FRA, GBR, GER, IRL, ITA, MEX, MON, NED, NOR, POR, SUI, SWE, TUR, USA.

Racing continues through Saturday.

Rolex Swan Cup gets serious
Porto Cervo, Sardinia: The second day of the Rolex Swan Cup kicked off on schedule at 12 midday for boats in both Division 1, on a coastal course, and Division 2, who completed two windward-leeward races. Tacticians and strategists in particular were put to the test, as they strived to get to grips with a south-easterly wind blowing at anywhere from 8 to 20 knots in different areas of the course.

Given the south-easterly wind, the Race Committee set a course of approximately 29 miles for Division 1, taking the Swan Maxi and Mini Maxi classes up the eastern coast of the islands of Caprera and La Maddalena, and on to the lighthouse at Barrettinelli di Fuori, before turning for the finish, which had been brought forward to Capo Ferro. A similar route, but covering approximately 25 miles, was set for the Classic S&S and Grand Prix groups, while their finish line was moved up to the Monaci islands.

The fleet raced in an average wind of about 15 knots, which fell away sharply in the northernmost portion of the course. The windward-leeward course for Division 2, set up just off Porto Cervo, had a more consistent breeze, but challenging choppy seas.

Winners of the second day are: Plis-Play, Flow, Josian, OM II, Stella Maris, G Spot, Nadir, Blue Sky.

The Swan 80 Plis-Play repeated yesterday's winning performance in the Maxi Class, strengthening her position at the top of the group. Second and third place of the day respectively went to the Swan 100 Onyx, with Gavin Brady on tactics, and the Swan 90 Freya, with tactician Mike Toppa. In the overall classification, Plis-Play sits in the top spot ahead of Freya and Onyx.

Tomorrow a long coastal race is scheduled for all classes, with the first warning signal set to sound at 12 midday.

Germans Move Ahead In Wind And Waves at 470 Europeans
The wind was whistling through the rigging for the second day of the 470 European Championships in the holiday resort of Cesme on the east coast of Turkey. With a similar wind strength and direction to day one, the fleet knew that the left-hand side of the course would be the place to be. That put good starting at a premium.

Thursday marks the start of the split into gold and silver fleet competition. Past Women's 470 World Champion from Japan, Ai Kondo Yoshida and her crew Naoya Kimura picked up a UFD disqualification for starting too early in the first race of today's session. Agonisingly this puts the Japanese team just two points out of making the cut for gold fleet. -- Andy Rice

Regates Royales de Cannes

Regates Royales In order to cultivate tradition, it is fashionable to invite members of a royal family, entrusting them with a sailboat for the week of racing. This is precisely what the Yacht Club of Monaco and Prince Albert II did last year, lending their sublime 15 M Tuiga to a friendly crew from the Royal family of Denmark. And to make the story even more beautiful, the Danes won with mastery. This year, Prince Charles of Bourbon of the two Sicilies, a distinguished sailor, will be at the helm of the Smeralda 888 one-design designed by the Argentinian German Frers. Cannes is not only the capital of cinema and its famous International Festival. According to sailors, it is a unique and exceptional body of water, with a bay protected from strong westerly winds by Cap Roux and from those coming from the East by Cap d'Antibes. Sure, the "dirty" character of the Mediterranean is not usurped, and it happens that a blow of the Mistral or of the Southeast under the influence of a depression on the Gulf of Genoa, invites itself, transforming the terrain of game in mogul fields. It also happens that the Big Blue finds itself like a lake, the water just rippled by a light zephyr.

The Fife spirit

In Cannes, most of the prestigious Metric and Classic class sailboats were designed by the legendary Scotsman William Fife from father to son, then built at Fairlie on the Clyde River in Scotland. It's a tradition, there are necessarily also the Dragon, 9-meter keelboats designed by Johan Anker in 1929, because nicknamed "the sailboat of Kings" and which will compete in one of the most important regattas of the international season, just like the 5.5 MJI also led by former Olympic sailors during this French Open. If today's all-carbon racing machines now look like airplanes, the most beautiful sailboats in the world are certainly in Cannes, racing all under the International Rating (JI), according to a convoluted mathematical equation, founded in 1903 by American architect Nathanael Herreshoff.

The link-up between the IMOCA Class and The Ocean Race is formally announced in Lorient
The participation of the IMOCA Class in the next edition of The Ocean Race was formally launched in Lorient this week as the skippers of five teams were presented to the media ahead of the start of the race from Alicante in January.

This will be the 14th edition of The Ocean Race – formerly the Whitbread Round the World Race and the Volvo Ocean Race (VOR) – which is regarded as the unofficial world championship of fully-crewed ocean racing.

The IMOCA crews will take on the 32,000-nautical mile challenge, that features seven legs and nine host cities, alongside the one-design VO65 fleet. So far five IMOCA teams have been unveiled, but there are a few more expected.

Those announced are the Malizia-Seaexplorer team skippered by Boris Herrmann of Germany, the US-based 11th Hour Racing Team skippered by Charlie Enright, and three French teams – Guyot Environnement-Team Europe led by Benjamin Dutreux, Biotherm skippered by Paul Meilhat and finally Holcim-PRB skippered by two-time VOR veteran Kevin Escoffier.

The participation of the IMOCA Class in this race is the result of a long process of evaluation, co-ordination and negotiation between the Class and the race organisers, represented at the press conference in Lorient by the Swedish Ocean Race managing director Johan Salen. -- Ed Gorman

Hobie 16 World Championships
Costa Brava Pirineu de Girona, Spain: The 2022 Hobie 16 World Championships head to Europe after a 25-year hiatus. Following our last world championship event in 2019, there was a strong desire to return to Europe, however this didn't come easy as the pandemic complicated every aspect of a Worlds event planning. Despite having to reschedule a few times, we are pleased to be hosting this event in the Costa Brava region of Spain. The Mediterranean Sea has influenced human culture for thousands of years and sailing on the "Med" is an aspiration for many sailors.

This September, 225 teams composed of 450 sailors will compete in six events that compromise the Hobie 16 World Championships. The Hobie Cat Company provides 50 brand new identical boats that are used in a round robin format throughout the event. Sailors only need to bring their personal gear as all the boats are identical and are exchanged between races. Provided boat events have been a long-standing approach to World Championship racing in the Hobie class going back to the first Hobie 16 World Championships held in Hawaii in 1976.

The Costa Brava Pirineu de Girona area, a coastal region of northeast Spain provides six kilometers of beach in an area perfect for sailing. The host venue Camping La Ballena Alegre is a popular destination for sailing regattas and kiteboarding.

Teams to watch include 2019 world champions Yamil Saba/ Anakarina Luna Mendoza (VEN), past champions Daniel Christensen/Josephine Frederiksen (DEN). Cam Owen/Susan Ghent (AUS) and Gavin Colby/Josephine Mark (AUS) who have been practicing hard throughout the south hemisphere winter and are hungry for a win.

Highlights of what happened globally in the sport of sailing in the last 7 days. The Alinghi Red Bull Americas' Cup Team, took their new boat out last week, and they had a day to remember. They were hit by a "Barcelona Weather Bomb".

This the weekly "Sailing World on Water" September 09, 2022. Highlights in the Sport of Sailing in the last seven days.

While doing a "dock-walk" in the Golden Globe marina, Organizer Don McIntyre, spoke about one of the other upcoming Round the World races, The 2024, Mini Globe, and he has 15 entrants registered so far. The boats are a third of the size of a Vendee Globe IMOCA 60's. But will they be foiling?

The opening exchanges of the 32nd Maxi-Yacht Rolex Cup have reinforced the event's reputation as an impressive gathering of sailing power, and prowess. From the traditional designs of the J Class, through the all-carbon Mini Maxi, and Maxi Racers, the thunderous Supermaxis to the ultimate innovation of the first ever foiling Maxi, the 2022 fleet is a true demonstration of what makes large yacht racing so compelling.

Peter Hunter
Peter Hunter The world of sailing has lost one of its great characters. Hunter - the "Peter" or "PCC" are unnecessary prefixes, when people of a certain era in sailing refer to Hunter, we know exactly who they are talking about. A former world class International 14, Finn and Dragon sailor from the amateur time of our sport, Hunter died at Newport on the Isle of Wight, 3rd September.

Sailing with Olympic Gold Medallist Stuart Morris he won the prestigious Prince of Wales Cup for International 14s, and sailed Olympic trials in the Finn and Dragon. He also served as Vice Commodore and Trustee of the Royal Thames Yacht Club, as Terrestrial Commodore of the tongue in cheek Imperial Poona Yacht Club and was an active member of the Royal Yacht Squadron and Seaview Yacht Club.

For Hunter sailing always had to be fun and as in all areas of his life, he was not impressed by people who take themselves too seriously. In one Finn race, at an important Olympic selection regatta on a particularly cold day, he was leading at the windward mark and whipped out a hip flask to self administer a large slug of scotch. The then Olympic manager of the Finn class was apoplectic with rage that his races weren't being taken seriously enough.

His view was that grass roots and club level sailing is the lifeblood of our sport and needs to be cared for and nurtured so that people coming into the sport stay in it. This, and his accounting background made him a valuable member of club committees. He was on the founding committee of Datchet Water Sailing Club before his long term service on various Royal Thames committees.

When remembering Hunter one is reminded of the lines from Rudyard Kiplings poem "If" - "If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch..."

Through his membership of Imperial Poona and the Royal Yacht Squadron he was on first name terms with the late Duke of Edinburgh, and yet was comfortable rubbing shoulders with locals at the bar of any pub. It was Hunter's humour, joie de vivre and huge personality that stood him out from the crowd. You could fill more volumes than the Encyclopedia Britannica with "Hunter stories", many of them he would happily tell against himself.

It was the Duke of Edinburgh who invited Hunter to become the Terrestrial Commodore of Imperial Poona, receiving a phone call claiming to be from Buckingham Palace he was about to reply, "and I'm the Queen of Sheeba", before realizing it was genuine. The club's mantra "life can be significantly improved by not taking it too seriously all the time," suited Hunter well.

No tribute to Hunter would be complete without mention of his late wife Jenny, who was the perfect foil to his larger than life character. They were a great and enduring double act and the world of sailing is a poorer place without them. -- John Roberson
