Perfect First Day For 21st Rolex Swan Cup

Rolex Swan Cup Porto Cervo, Italy: The Costa Smeralda put on its very best show for the first day of the Rolex Swan Cup, with a fresh south-easterly breeze blowing at around 12 knots and increasing to 15 providing the entire fleet with a fantastic day's sailing.

The Rolex Swan Cup is a biennial regatta organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) in collaboration with the Nautor Swan shipyard and with the support of title sponsor Rolex. Now in its 21st edition, the event will conclude on Sunday 18th September.

The Swans racing in the Maxi and Mini Maxi classes took on a coastal course of approximately 27 miles, while the Grand Prix and Classic Sparkman & Stephens classes raced on a similar route, with the length reduced to around 23 miles. After rounding the offset mark, the fleet sailed south to round the islands of Mortorio and Soffi, before hoisting their spinnakers, headed for the Secca di Tre Monti via the Bisce pass.

From here the boats turned upwind to round Monaci island and descend towards the finish line off Porto Cervo. For the one-design classes, the Race Committee set two windward-leeward races, as per schedule. These featured precision starts, hard-fought mark roundings, perfectly executed manoeuvres, and the kind of tactical finesse that only champions of the level on display in this fleet are capable of producing.

Winners in their respective classes are: Plis-Play, Flow, Mascalzone Latino XXXIII, Crilia, Giuliana, G Spot, Selene Alifax, Ulika.

Tomorrow, 14 September, racing will continue with the first warning signal scheduled for 12 midday CEST.

AP Hotel & Resorts brilliantly wins SB20 World Championship
What a week it has been at the Provident CRM SB20 World Championship! The participants have experienced all types of Irish weather from rainy squalls to blasting sunshine. If the wind worked more on a decline from howling 30 knots on Monday to a light and shifty breeze on the last day, the emotions, on the contrary, kept heating up.

With the SB20 Worlds 2024 coming in Dubai it was great to have all the UAE teams and welcome them to the international level of SB20 racing. "See you in Dubai 2024" spinnakers over the racecourse showing a good level of competitive sailing.

Star World Championship
Marblehead, USA: An impressive run of form gave the race 2 win to Jørgen Schönherr (DEN) and Markus Koy (GER) who controlled the fleet from start to finish and end the day in 4th overall.

Headlining the leader board though are Italy's Diego Negri/Sergio Lambertenghi, who now count two second places, to lead over Paul Cayard (USA)/Frithjof Kleen (GER), with Croatia's Tonci Stipanovic/Tudor Bilic in third.

A postponed start, followed by a general recall saw racing get underway at 1409 hours. The 6-knot breeze remained steady with a short chop, significant current, super close racing and some supreme performances throughout the 8 nm race. A frustrating day though for the five teams who gave themselves a points mountain to climb after adding a UFD penalty to their scorecards.

470 Europeans
Cesme, Turkey: Day one of the 470 European Championships launched with a bang. The first day of qualifying was a big test as the strong northerly wind got stronger throughout the day.

With old teams from Tokyo 2020 forced to form new alliances in the new era of 470 Mixed competition, the men's 470 Olympic bronze medallists from Spain - Xammar & Rodriguez - were competing on opposite sides of qualifying.

Winners of the day in blue fleet were Spain's Nico Rodriguez now crewing for Silvia Mas. Winners of the day in yellow fleet were Spain's Nora Brugman with Jordi Xammar at the helm. Xammar only just flew into Turkey in time for the first race after a hectic weekend competing in St Tropez as Team Spain's skipper on the high-speed SailGP circuit at the weekend. -- Andy Rice

Class A European Championship
Second day more generous with wind at the Class A European Championship scheduled until Friday on Upper Lake Garda with Circolo Vela Arco organising the event. T

The open foil fleet was able to race three more races, bringing the total to five in all, in average southerly conditions from 13 knots upwards. And in the fierce flying fleet there was a renewed challenge between the two world champions Mischa Heemskerk (Netherlands) and Australian Steve Brewin, who today scored three firsts against the Dutchman's 2-4-2, thus moving into second place overall, two points behind Brewin.

Nine points behind Poland's Bendyk. Italian Lamberto Cesari (CN Bardolino) moved up one position, finishing fourth in the last race of the day and currently seventh overall. A good third in the last race also for Dutchman Thijs Visser, sixth overall.

A shorter classification for the "classic" non-foil fleet: after two races of the day and four races in all, the leadership of German Weis remains unchanged, just one point ahead of Australian Scott Anderson, who is definitely on the upswing with two firsts. In a tie, although third, is the Spaniard Gustavo Doreste (3-2). Eighth is Italian Alessandro Rosi (CN Donoratico), improved with a 6-7 on the day, compared to two 14ths on Monday.

Nineteen Nations Open J/70 European Championship
Hyeres France; Sunny skies, warm temperatures and winds at 7-8 knots greeted 88 boats for the J/70 European Championship in Hyeres France. Earning the early advantage in both the Open and One-Pro Division was Jorge Martinez Doreste's Bodega Can Marles (ESP). One race was completed, but decreasing winds then sent teams ashore. Two Americans stand in second and third place overall: Richard Witzel's Rowdy and Laura Grondin's Dark Energy. More than 40 boats are competing for the Corinthian title, currently led by Ludovico Fassitelli's Junda (MON) who is fifth in the Open also.

Nineteen nations are on hand: AUS, BRA, DEN, ESP, EST, FRA, GBR, GER, IRL, ITA, MEX, MON, NED, NOR, POR, SUI, SWE, TUR, USA.

Racing continues through Saturday. -- Julie and Christopher Howell

Finn Europeans opened in hospitable Hospitalet
The Open Finn European Masters Championship was opened Tuesday night at Club Nàutic Hospitalet-Vandellòs, at L'Hospitalet de l'Infant, Spain. Around 70 sailors from 20 nations are ready to compete for the Open and Masters European titles over the coming week.

The weather forecast for the week already looks challenging with very light winds for two days followed by moderate to strong offshore winds by the end of the week. Registration and equipment checks began Tuesday morning and continue through to Wednesday morning, with the first races scheduled from 14.00 on Wednesday.

12 Foot Sailing Pathway to the future, pathway to the 18 footers

When nine times JJ Giltinan world 18 footer champion Seve Jarvin recently presented the prizes to the junior sailors of the Vaucluse Amateur 12 Foot Sailing Club, he was not only returning to his former club, he was also reinforcing the link between the Vaucluse Amateur club and the Australian 18 Footers League.

It's a link which goes back almost 100 years.

League President and 2000 JJ Giltinan world champion John (Woody) Winning tells of his family's long association with the Vaucluse Amateur club, "my father John and his brother Richard, joined the club in the late 1920s, and the Winning family has been involved with the club ever since."

In 1946-47 John and Richard Winning were champion 12ft skiff sailors in Sydney when they were recruited by Brisbane skipper Bill Stanley to join his Australia crew for the 1946-47 Australian 18 footer Championship on Sydney Harbour.

The move was a great success when Australia won the title and the link between the Vaucluse Amateur club and the 18s was already on-its-way.

Their success in the Australia 18 footer was hardly surprising. When the Vaucluse Amateur club was founded and began racing in 1926, the only class being sailed was the 12ft skiff, which was a logical progression to the 18s.

Latest member of the family was John Winning Jr., who competed at the club for more than ten years prior to going on to win the 29er World Championship in 2002, and the NSW 18ft Skiff Championship.

The Australian 18 Footers League Commodore and past Committee member of the VA12SC, Simon Nearn, also had his son Max competing successfully at the club in both the Sabot and Flying Elevens, and is extremely complimentary about the experience.

While ever the Vaucluse Amateur 12 Foot Sailing Club continues to produce the quality of sailing talent it has done for so many years, the Australian 18 Footers League's fleet will continue to provide great racing on Sydney Harbour. -- Frank Quealey Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

The Last Word
It's a game. A game played on the streets of New York, for as long as anyone can remember. It is called Ringolevio, and the rules are simple. There are two sides, each with the same number of players. There are no time limits, no intermissions, no substitutes and no weapons allowed. There are two jails. There is one objective. -- Emmett Grogan
