In the second of five ocean sprints that make up the Velux 5 Oceans, Derek, Canada's top solo yachtsman, sailed more than 7,500 nautical miles through the Southern Ocean from Cape Town in South Africa in 32 days and 17 hours. "It's been a long, difficult and brutal leg and I'm glad to be here," Derek said as he stepped off Active House for the first time in over a month. "It was just relentless storms, high pressure systems, low pressure systems... It's good to have it over with. This is my third race around the world and this last leg was the toughest sailing I've ever done." "I was a lot more competitive this time," Derek added. "Gutek and I found ourselves in the same patch of water, it was great to have such close competition. At one point we were getting so close I called him in the middle of a storm just to make sure his radar was on. I made one slip up by tacking too soon about a week ago and that set the scene for the rest of the race with Gutek just beating me by a day." After yesterday afternoon's update from race headquarters at the Royal Cape Yacht Club, Prodigy was heading due west at an average speed of 10,58 knots and had completed 723nm, followed by City of Cape Town, a 42ft Lavranos skippered by Gerrie Heggie (691nm), the 63ft maxi Grand Filou II (602nm) and the 42ft Xtra-Link (549nm). Heggie put in the most impressive 24-hour run, clocking up 261,5nm, about eight miles more than what Prodigy achieved over the same period. Given their respective boat sizes and a demanding IRC rating, City of Cape Town will be well chuffed with their performance so far. Before the race got underway, Michael Robb, first mate and trimmer on board City of Cape Town, was quietly optimistic about their chances, but he added that Prodigy could also upset the apple cart by winning the race overall as well. Xtra-Link, skippered by Dale Kushner, is in second place behind Prodigy on handicap, City of Cape Town third, Cape Storm, fourth, Yachtport SA fifth and Grand Filou II sixth. Development Theo Yon, who is crewing on board Grand Filou II, is loving every moment being out on a maxi in the South Atlantic: "Yesterday we had very light conditions but that's good for our boat," he said. "The last few days we have had a lot of breakages and we damaged a spinnaker, but that's been repaired and it's up and going again. Barcelona World Race The Barcelona duo have enjoyed their relatively easy days at the top of the fleet, last night appearing live from the boat on one of Spain's most-watched late evening TV programmes 'Buenafuente' and have also done all they can to prepare mentally and physically for this critical phase of this long leg down the Atlantic to Gough Island. This afternoon Pella and Ribes had 1,466 miles to sail to the key way-point while Michel Desjoyeaux (FRA) and François Gabart (FRA), barrelling down the Brazilian coast on Foncia, at the latitude of Rio de Janeiro, between four and six knots quicker had 1,788 miles to Gough Island. The lonely island, which will effectively act as watch-keeper for the Barcelona World Race fleet before the gateway to the Southern Ocean, is a dependency of the British overseas territory of Saint Helena. It has a significant problem in being overrun by giant carnivorous mice which eat young seabirds, threatening the future of the Tristan Albatrossand the Atlantic Petrelto extinction. The island is largely uninhabited other than a meteorological team from the South African Meteorological Bureau - who monitor the hostile South Atlantic low pressure systems as they approach South Africa and scientific researchers. Routing predictions still suggest there is little to choose between the pathfinder's direct passage through the jungle of unstable weather of Estrella Damm, and the fast route west down the Brazilian coast. The ETA for the first boat has advanced to around Sunday morning as the Saint Helena high pressure system takes on an increasingly ordered shape. Join the team www.dyneemaexperience.com ORC Sailor Services Now Available This new service will be of value to anyone interested in viewing a boat's rating certificate under the new 2011 VPP, as well as to understand how changes in some parameters, such as rig and sail dimensions, will affect their 2011 ratings. Test certificates are not valid for racing, and valid 2011 ORC Club and ORC International certificates will still be offered only through each country's ORC Rating Office. Those interested in doing more comprehensive rating investigations are asked to contact their designers, who can then use the 2011 ORC VPP Designer's version (DVP) to make changes to appendages, hull forms and related measurements to run test certificates through their local rating offices. This DVP is available for download at the ORC website for €500. The ORC DVP is a Windows-based software programme, easy to use, with user-friendly interface and standard Windows functions. The new Sailor Services joins two other features offered to the sailors with ORC certificates, the Stability and Hydrostatics Datasheet and the ORC Speed Guide, which includes polar diagrams as well as theoretical speeds in various wind conditions for every possible sail combination. Golding Up For Grabs It began when Golding was allocated Group 4 as sponsor in Chay Blyth's 1992 British Steel Challenge. Philip-Sorensen was chairman and took a shine to the ambitious, focused and scrupulously organised 31-year-old former fireman. His backing extended beyond another Challenge round the world race in 1996 to a westabout solo record, a foray into the Admiral's Cup, the Vendee Globe and IMOCA 60 circuit and latterly through his company Ecover a team in Extreme 40s. Jorgen Philip-Sorensen died last year and his personal and professional backing came to an end. Ecover has decided not to renew its sponsorship for either the 60 or the Extreme 40. Mike has bought the monohull and chartered it to Jean Le Cam for the Barcelona World Race (Le Cam sadly was dismasted last week) and the catamaran he owns with Mark Turner is being sailed by Team New Zealand. "I'm a charter company now," he laughs. But to make the start line of the Vendee Globe in 2012, Mike Golding needs sponsorship, something he is less experienced at raising than most of his contemporaries. Eighty-two boats, the largest fleet this season, started dramatically with shredded sails and a man over board who was miraculously recovered by his crew mates at the start line. Lively wind conditions and a choppy sea contributed to a spectacular race, which witnessed more split sails along the way and more men over board who were quickly recovered by the support craft. 'We moved the race to start at Deira Palm and finished at the Burj Al Arab because of the wind direction,' said Marwan Al Tayer from the DIMC organising committee and Race Officer of the Day. 'The conditions were superb for a really exciting race and I am pleased with the amount of boats on the start line, this sport is truly growing in popularity which it's very encouraging.' "We Live Like Animals" The mariners assembled by Ian Walker, the skipper of the first UAE entry in the round-the-world challenge, are acutely aware of the dangers they will face when the race departs from Alicante, Spain, in October. Several new sailors will soon be selected to share the hardships, too, when Walker completes the crew this week by naming an Emirati sailor as well as three crew members under the age of 30, which is a condition of the race. "We live like animals," said Walker as he gave a tour of the cramped space he and his colleagues will call home for nine months. "The hardest part of living the rough-and-ready life being at sea for long periods is readjusting to domestic life when you get home. "My wife always has to remind me of table manners when we sit down to eat a leisurely meal when I have become accustomed to scavenging for whatever there is on board." A brief inspection of the living area was carried out as he manoeuvred his boat across calm Gulf waters in a warm breeze. How gut-wrenching that claustrophobic and nauseous below-deck zone must be in the wilder regions of the Southern Ocean or North Atlantic, one had to wonder. Craig Satterthwaite, one of two watch leaders in the team, said: "You have to choose wisely who you go round the world with. It is a test of character and compatibility as much as sailing skill. That's why we are taking our time picking the people who are going to fit into the group. The world-wide number one ranked Dragon sailor, Anatoly Loginov from Russia, as well as the vice-world champion 2009, Lars Hendriksen from Denmark, will also be at the starting line. The Dragon class supports a major charitable foundation. For the 7th time in succession and as a prelude to the European Championship the CHILDHOOD Race will be sailed, on Sunday, 3rd of July 2011. in favor of the World Childhood Foundation, founded by her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden.
