Windward-leewards begin at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup While coastal races around northeast Sardinia's Costa Smeralda are among the most attractive in the world, the possibility of passing lanes and more regular shifts are greater when sailing windward-leewards on open water. So today among the 50 boat Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup fleet it was the turn of the J Class and Mini Maxi 1's former Maxi 72s to sail these. The southeasterly wind reached the low teens and occasionally dropped to 6-7 for the other classes racing coastals.

Among the former Maxi 72s it was again the turn of the 'less pimped' examples to prevail – of the two races sailed today George Sakellaris' Proteus won the first by 10 seconds on corrected time from Hap Fauth's Bella Mente, while yesterday's winner, Jim Swartz's peppermint-coloured Vesper, claimed the second and now leads Mini Maxi 1 by three points from Proteus with Dario Ferrari's heavily modified Cannonball holding third.

In the Super Maxi class that was another Swedish victory for yesterday's winner, the Swan 115 Shamanna, her time correcting out to 1 minutes 2 seconds ahead of the Spirit Yachts 111 Geist.

Meanwhile in the largest class competing, the 13-strong Maxi class, there was upset when initially it appeared that Claus Peter Offen's Wally 100 Y3K had won, only to lose out to Massimiliano Florio's Southern Wind 82 Grande Orazio following a protest over a start line infringement. Nonetheless Y3K won the unofficial 'battle of the 100s' of which there are five racing here.

The tightest leaderboard after two days is in Mini Maxi 2 where one point separates yesterday's leader, Sven Wackerhagen's Wally 80 Rose, from Alessandro Del Bono's ILC maxi Capricorno and Luciano Gandini's Mylius 80 Twin Soul B, winner of last year's 151 Miglia-Trofeo Cetilar.

Tomorrow the wind is forecast to be from the southwest and slightly lighter than today. The Maxi class is scheduled to race windward-leewards with everyone else on coastal courses. -- James Boyd / International Maxi Association

Superior Svea Score Windward-Leewards Double

JCLass Two wins today around windward-leeward courses sees the Swedish flagged Svea unbeaten in the J Class so far at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup on Sardinia's Costa Smeralda.

Solid, uncomplicated, well-timed starts were the foundations of Svea's double today. With Swedish co-owner Niklas Zennstrom on the helm, Bouwe Bekking calling tactics and navigator Steve Hayles running the magic numbers, Svea was ahead at the first windward mark both times and could not be caught by her rivals.

Second places today were shared between Velsheda and Topaz whilst the consistent Ranger placed third twice. With the wind at 10-12 kts from the SE again, in the days first race Topaz had the best start in terms of time on distance and positioning but Svea, who were happy to start off the left end of the line, were able to outpoint and outpace Velsheda to lead around the first turn by four boat lengths.

Svea led Velsheda comfortably around the course, the leading two opening space on the chasing pair of Ranger and Topaz who were very close at the finish.

Svea finished one minute and 19 seconds ahead of Velsheda which took second place. On corrected time just three seconds separated Ranger from Topaz who were fourth.

And the second race was very much a repeat performance from the regatta leaders who again started closest to the pin, lining up at close to full pace and height and were once more able to outgun Velsheda who ended up squeezed between Svea and Topaz for much of the upwind. Both of their winning margins were more than one minute on corrected time.

Racing continues Wednesday with a return to coastal courses.

Race 2, corrected times
1 Svea 1:07:12
2 Velsheda 1:09:30
3 Ranger 1:10:09
4 Topaz 1:10:12

Race 3, corrected times

A Dutch double defense in skiff
Day four was a classic 'Bay Day' with 12 to 14 knots of steady sea breeze for the 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 World Championships in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Odile van Aanholt and Annette Duetz (NED) have secured the 2022 49erFX World Championship. In the medal race the Dutch pair outdueled the Swedish challenge from Vilma Bobeck and Rebecca Netzler (SWE) who took the silver. Twice winners of the 49erFX World Championship from Spain, Tamara Echegoyen and Paula Barcelo (ESP) took the bronze medal.

Bart Lambriex and Floris van der Werken (NED) have secured their second straight 49er world title. The Dutch pair had a strong scoreline heading into the final race, making their lead mathematically insurmountable.

The story of the 2022 NACRA 17 World Championships in Halifax was easily that Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti won 14 of 16 fleet races winning the title before the medal race. It can't be denied that, as Australian coach Darren Bundock put it, the pairing is a "class above" the rest of the world.

Medal Races

Cascais Welcomes Six Metre European Championship
Cascais, Portugal: The opening day of the 2022 Six Metre European Championship in Cascais produced champagne sailing conditions enabling both scheduled races to be completed in an eight to twelve knot westerly breeze which clocked gently right as the afternoon wore on.

A third in race one and a convincing win in race two put Portuguese Olympian Patrick Monteiro de Barros and his Pelle Petterson designed Seljm into the lead in the Open Division. Reigning Six Metre World Champion Momo, with owner Dieter Schoen of Switzerland at the helm, won the first racing in style from Violeta Alvarez's Stella but was then over eager on the second start and had to return. Momo dug deep and fought back to sixth place, putting her into second overall. Fellow Swiss Jan Eckert's Ginkgo Too finished fifth and second so counts the same points as Momo, but takes third place overall on countback.

In the Classic Division Ross Macdonald at the helm of Bribon 500 and Andy Postle and Brian Pope's Nirvana gave notice that they will be the boats to beat. Nirvana took the first race from Bribon 500 with Thomas Kuhmann's Hanko III third. In race two Bribon 500 took an early lead on the fleet which she then extend impressively all the way to the finish. Mauricio Sanchez Bella's Titia took second and Nirvana was third. In the Classic Division overall standings Bribon 500 has a single point lead over Nirvana with Titia and Hanko III both counting eight points but Titia lying third on countback.-- Fiona Brown

Six Metre European Championship

The A-Class European Championships preview
Click on image for photo gallery.

A-Class There are currently gathering this week at the iconic Lake Garda, some 100 sailors of the World's fastest single-handed cat class. The A-Class Catamaran European Championships kicks off on Monday Sept 12th under the auspices of the Circolo Vela Arco on the North shore of the lake., and is in joint conjunction with the German and Italian A-Class Associations. In this class the Euros are usually held whenever the World Champs are outside Europe. This year was the first opportunity since Warnemunde in 2018 to hold the event, as COVID put a stop to everything. The 2022 Beacon Group A Cat Worlds was the first International event to be held within the class, taking place in Houston Tx, back in early May and seeing a turnout of nearly 70 boats.

The 100 boat turnout in Garda is the result a limit imposed on the class by the host CVA club to allow a manageable number in a limited space. As a result, all National Associations fell back on their National ranking positions when handing out the limited place numbers for each county decided by the International Association. However, as there are two categories within this class; the Classic non-foilers and the Open foilers, the local Associations were left to decide on the split between two. The final split is about 2:1 in favour of the Open Foilers. Hardly surprising as this place is a foiling nirvana. The entries are spread over 17 countries, with only the USA, ARG and NZL not represented.

We have the Aussie Double act of Brewin and Bundy on station. Multiple A-Cat World Champ Stevie Brewin was a little unlucky at Houston, the OCS in the 7th race saw him finishing 5th, losing by a single point to his training buddy Darren Bundock. Bundy, a multiple Tornado Champ, will be striving to get an A-Cat championship under his belt. He couldn't quite match the pace and agility of Riley Gibbs at Houston, but still saved his best until last, winning the final race in the short Texas chop in fine style. There is another Multiple A-class World Champion, Mischa Heemskerk NED (DNA F1x). He has been somewhat out of the major circuit over since his World Championship win at Weymouth. House building took priority. This will be the first major outing for him and it will be interesting to see if he still has the pace. -- Gordon Upton

Sunfish Worlds
The Sunfish World Championship started on Lake Garda Trentino, Italy: spectacular setting with all the sails with the tricolour, in honour of the host country

At Circolo Vela Torbole the most popular boat in the world is colouring the Upper Garda with almost 100 boats at the start; 14 Italians

After the first three races, the ranking is very short in the top positions: Peru in the lead with Jean Paul De Trazegnies followed at one point by compatriot Romero

The event, organised by the Circolo Vela Torbole in collaboration with the Italian Sailing Federation, Garda Trentino Vela Consorzio, and the Italian and international Sunfish class, began on Monday with a practice race and opening ceremony, while the official races began on 6 September, with the first three races held in optimal conditions of warm sun and medium wind. The fleet is truly heterogeneous with helmsmen of all ages, from the youngest to the over seventies who still enjoy racing, travelling the world: 12 nations are present, mainly from America and South America with the United States having the largest number of participants.

Peru got off to a good start straight away with two of its helmsmen in the top two positions after the first three races: with a 2-10-5 it was Jean Paul De Trazegnies in the lead, followed by his compatriot Caterina Romero, who took a twelfth followed by two thirds. With a fifteenth and two second places, he occupies third position just one point behind Romero and in a tie with the fourth, David Hernandez (Guatemala), flanked by Just van Aanholt (Aruba).

Bestaven pays tribute to Maitre CoQ as his defence of his Vendee Globe title begins
Click on image for photo gallery.

The new Guillaume Verdier-designed Maitre CoQ V is based on the molds of 11th Hour Racing Team-Mālama. It emerged from its build shed at CDK Technologies in Port La Forêt a bit later than Bestaven may have planned, but it is going to give the 2020/21 Vendee Globe winner a potent platform to defend his title.

Speaking to the IMOCA Class, Bestaven, 49 who is based in La Rochelle, paid tribute to his sponsor, the French poultry foods producer that is taking part in the Vendee Globe for the fourth time in 2024.

"Maitre CoQ is really committed to sailing," said Bestaven, who showed superb consistency of performance in the deep south during his first full Vendee Globe on board the 2015 VPLP-Verdier designed Maitre CoQ IV. "They also support the Figaro class with the Solo Maitre CoQ and they've been an IMOCA partner for a long time."

An engineer by training and a successful entrepreneur and businessman whose company, Watt & Sea, has developed hydro-generators that are fitted to many IMOCA yachts, Bestaven says the sponsorship is based on far more than just financial backing.

"What I like about this company is the values they carry," he said. "It's a family company. I feel at home here. It's the first time I've had a partner with so many employees who follow me when I'm at sea, so that motivates me too. There is a real internal programme to bring the project to life, both internally and externally. It's an interesting culture." -- Ed Gorman

At HH Catamarans we are always moving. Always innovating. Always looking ahead. We will never be satisfied when we know there is opportunity to improve, to grow, to lead.

HH52

Over the past several months we have been working with our design partners at Morrelli & Melvin in California on the next addition to our model lineup. Joining the all new HH44, HH60 and HH88 will be the HH52.

The all new HH52 is an evolution of our award-winning HH50 platform, which we have completely redesigned with electrification in mind. Featuring an all new cabin top with 4,900 watts of solar, a new deck plan, a new interior layout, and increased sail area, this yacht brings the very latest design features and performance improvements to our mid-size luxury cruising catamaran.

The HH52 draws on many of the learnings gained in the development of the HH44 and HH60. New interior features include the popular L-shaped settee and galley island found on our larger boats, and a more spacious guest head to starboard. Forward windows will open for maximum ventilation and safari-style windows aft will create a sense of openness not found on many comparable cats. The traveler has been moved to the coachroof to allow for an extended cabin top and safe and comfortable aft beam seating. Most striking is the option for two different helm positions: a forward cockpit with two doors around a central helm station, or dual aft swing helms placed lower and further aft a la the HH44. www.hhcatamarans.com/hh52
