rolex Maxi The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup got off to a perfect start today. Organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in collaboration with the IMA (International Maxi Association) and with the support of long-standing title sponsor Rolex, the event is now in its 32nd edition. The fleet of maxi yachts taking part, divided into 7 classes according to their respective characteristics, took advantage of an ideal east-south easterly wind of 14 to 18 knots, to show what these beautiful boats are capable of on the regatta course. The starting procedure began right on time at 12 midday, with the various groupings starting separately in order to guarantee the best race conditions for everyone, in a sequence that ran for approximately one hour.

The Race Committee selected a 35-mile coastal course that took the competitors from Porto Cervo on an anticlockwise circumnavigation of the islands of Caprera and Maddalena, up to the Secca di Tre Monti shallows in the Saline Gulf, then on a reach to the Monaci island, and from there upwind towards the finish line off Porto Cervo.

The route for the Mini Maxi divisions 2, 3 and 4 was reduced to 29 miles: after passing the Secca di Tre Monti the yachts continued upwind via the Bisce pass and on to the finish line. All classes were able to complete the race in 3 to 4 hours.

Racing continues tomorrow with the starting procedure scheduled for 12 midday and winds similar to today forecast. -- Marialisa Panu / Giuliano Luzzatto

Svea open the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup with a win
Photo by Max Ranchi, www.maxranchi.com. Click on image for photo gallery.

JCLass Triumphant on their debut as a team at the Superyacht Cup Palma in July, Swedish flagged Svea continued their winning ways today when they took first blood in the four-boat J Class at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, racing a 34.5-mile coastal course round Caprera and La Maddalena on Sardinia's beautiful Costa Smeralda.

Although Velsheda conclusively won the start and seemed to sail a textbook race crossing the YCCS finish line first, Svea came back from a poorly timed and executed start to take victory on corrected time by just over one minute from Ranger, who themselves were winners of the first event of the season, the Saint Barth's Bucket. Velsheda took third, one minute and 10 seconds behind Ranger. Unfortunately, Topaz's jib blew up when the bow buried in a wave on their final approach to the start, and with less than a minute to the start gun they had to trail round ten minutes behind the leading trio.

For the first day back racing as a class at the annual so called 'Maxi Worlds' since 2014, the Costa Smeralda revealed a glamour day of 12-17kts of south-easterly breeze, with perfect sunshine and a few fluffy clouds. Through the islands the Js were at full speed, close reaching just metres from the rocks at times.

Racing continues Tuesday with two windward leeward courses planned.

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup Day 1, J Class
1. Svea corrected time 3hrs 16m 00s
2. Ranger 3:17:06
3. Velsheda 3:18:16
4. Topaz 3:24:06

A head to head title match?
With just over 120 nautical miles to sail to the Farallones turning mark which lies just off the rugged north Spanish coast near to Gijon, the two leading title contenders on the third and final leg of the 53rd La Solitaire du Figaro continue to race sid- by-side, in clear sight of each other after over 30 hours of racing since the fleet left Royan on Sunday lunchtime.

The Normandy region's Guillaume Pirouelle left the start line on Sunday carrying a 14 minutes aggregate lead over Brittany's second placed Tom Laperche. This afternoon as the leading peloton race upwind towards the most southerly turning mark of the 640 nautical miles stage to Saint-Nazaire, rivals Pirouelle and Laperche remain no more than 100 metres apart, watching each other's every move.

Last night when the Arcachon buoy – the first mark of the course - was reached Pirouelle collected his first Intermediate Sprint bonus of the race, gaining five minutes, Laperche getting three minutes in second. So close are these two adversaries racing on this race-deciding third leg it is not inconceivable that the net two minutes of bonus Pirouelle collected over his rival may yet prove decisive. They are that close.

Veteran Fred Duthil (Le Journal de Entreprises) , third on the first stage, has had to abandon the race due to a back injury.

M32 European Championships
A splendid sunny day and five more races in medium winds brought the M32 European Championships, the 4th and final stage of the European Circuit of the class, organised by Fraglia Vela Riva, to a close on Garda Trentino. As expected it was a hard-fought final, especially for second and third place, as the Dutch of Bliksem won by a margin of 10 points. Redemption of the Italian Andrea Lacorte on Vitamina Veloce, who after a negative day on Saturday, managed to climb up the ranking by one position, confirming his second place overall and winning the overall classification of the European Circuit after the four stages held in 2022. In third place by a single point was China One Ningbo. Once again the logistic base offered by Fraglia Vela Riva proved to be an excellent solution for this type of catamarans and their teams, who found the necessary spaces.

Bournemouth Digital Poole Week - Day 6
Photo by David Harding. Click on image for photo gallery.

Bournemouth Digital Poole Week Friday was a glorious day to bring the 74th Poole Week to a close. Even when the sun wasn't actually shining, the weather was still warm and bright, and there was enough wind for all the fleets to sail up to two races as scheduled.

Of course there were plenty of 'if only' stories from competitors who found themselves on the wrong side of the wind-shifts all week. Someone up there in the clouds was having fun, scattering catspaws around the harbour like confetti and seeing who made the best of them.

For the race officers - Bob Jennings on the Parkstone Platform and Fiona Linford on the committee boat in the Top Triangle - conditions were somewhat testing. Setting a course when the wind is swinging randomly back and forth through 100 degrees is a challenge in anyone's books, but somehow they managed to get the fleets away and nearly always set a surprisingly true first windward leg.

Undoubtedly the most delighted race-winner on Friday was Emma Hartley. Emma's helm in the RS200s, Ben Whalley, hadn't been able to sail on Thursday or Friday. Peter Loretto, without a Friday crew himself, handed the helm to Emma who brought them home in first place to record her first-ever race win in Friday's first race. That's a lot of firsts. In his capacity as chairman of Poole Week's organising committee, Loretto had had more than enough to think about in the run-up to the event - and for many months before - so finishing second overall in the 200s was a very pleasing result. -- David Harding

How The Golden Globe Race Has Changed Between Two Editions
Sixteen solo sailors set off on Sunday from Les Sables d'Olonne for the second edition of the Golden Globe Race, an "old-school" solo round-the-world race. The first one was won in 2018-2019 by Jean-Luc Van den Heede. Tip & Shaft talks organization, rules, favorites, all about this GGR V 2.0

There will be sixteen solo racers, including 4 returning for a second go, setting off on Sunday for a solo race around the world which was first contested four years ago by the Australian adventurer Don McIntyre, who was eager to offer a race which mirrored the early pioneering philosophies of mythical Golden Globe of 1968. So there 16 compared with 18 on the first edition. "If Covid did not exist we would have had about 26 entrants. Travel restrictions and other issues killed it. We are very happy, the quality is high and the characters are grand! So we are very healthy, with many also lining up for 2026", explains Don McIntyre.

The organizer has made some changes to the rules compared to the previous edition: "The most important was moving the start date back two months which "may'' give less or softer storms in the Southern Ocean. An extra 2000 mile qualifying voyage in the entered GGR yacht was added, making 4000 solo and 8000 ocean miles minimum. Most have much more than that", says Don McIntyre. Another notable change is a ban on amateur radio : "The last time, it allowed participants to have information to which they should not have had access", the race director, the Frenchman Sebastien Delasnerie explains.

But there is an objective bring the race to much more to life than in 2018 and so the sailors will be able to send text messages via their Yellow Brick tracker, these being transformed into daily tweets, "without any filter from the organization", specifies the race director, while the course now has two additional gates at Cape Town and Punta del Este (in addition to the Canary Islands and Hobart), where sailors will deposit SD cards containing the images they have taken at sea and "for media organisations, we allow twice a week an exclusive 20 minute interview with every entrant" adds Don McIntyre.

SLAM Dream Team: Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti - Tokyo 2020 Nacra 17 Olympic gold medallists (Pictured at right, click to enlarge).
SLAM TEAM Genoa, 3st September: 13 months after a key shift in ownership, 'SLAM IS BACK', a commitment made on 31st May in Milan during an event held by the historic sportswear company founded in Genoa in 1979 to launch its new direction, has now become a reality as SLAM.com presents its brand new FOIL Collection.

This collection is our contribution to the future of sailing - announced Enrico Chieffi, CEO of SLAM.com since July 2021 and first to have pushed for and to have believed in this exclusive and innovative sportswear line - last year we started working on this new project, with the idea of engaging with our Dream Team of athletes during its design phase, since they are the ones who have adapted successfully to using foiling technology and who know what it takes to compete at the highest levels of sailing.Their contribution has been essential for developing innovative solutions dedicated to sailing safely."

This entire collection was first conceived to create innovative, streamlined and extremely high-performing items of clothing, implementing the very latest cutting-edge technology currently available on the market. In fact, the first layer designed for the collection features Seamless technology which allows for items of clothing to be produced without any seams coming into contact with the wearer's skin and for complete freedom of movement. The collection also features the use of Body Mapping techniques that allow for the yarn to be applied on the basis of which points require more or less compression.

Both innovations, paired with an extremely dynamic style, make SLAM's Seamless sportswear ideal for the Winter or for Northern climates, whether at the gym, in the mountains or biking, making it an exceptionally versatile line.

As for colours, SLAM started out with a more traditional palette then mixed in a few new ideas to give this brand new collection its own clear identity. The red sleeve, black body and grey sides represent the colour block for this line, a strong, decisive palette that defines the collection's uniqueness.

A brand new look has also been given to SLAM's flagship stores, where customers can now experience the new collection first-hand, and to the official website, now sporting a brand new style, redesigned to be more dynamic and innovative while remaining in line with the brand's new direction, featuring SLAM's Dream Team of athletes wearing the new collection.

British Marine's latest insight into consumer boating habits shows that the pandemic had a profound effect on the UK's relationship with the outdoors with visits to canals, rivers, lakes and the coast increasing in popularity from 18% pre-pandemic to 49% last year.

"The results of the survey really go to show there is a real appetite for people to get on the water in the UK, as an industry our job now is to look at ways we can continue to encourage people to take to the water in the UK and build on the momentum of the previous two years," said Lesley Robinson, CEO, British Marine.

The report reveals that nearly a quarter (24%) of participants who took part in 2020 did so for the first time.

This trend was particularly pronounced in 'gateway' boating activities like paddleboarding and kayaking, with nearly a third of respondents (31% and 28%, respectively) starting within the last 12 months.

Approximately 58% of participants took part in an activity using their own craft, with other forms of third-party rental experiences accounting for most other experiences.
