Rookie Pirouelle Takes Stage 2 Win Into Royan, Ireland's Dolan Fifth
French rookie Guillaume Pirouelle (Region Normandie) crossed the finish line off Royan at the mouth of the Gironde estuary at 06:28:26hrs (CEST/FRANCE) in this morning's breaking dawn to claim victory on the 655 nautical Stage 2 of the 53rd La Solitaire du Figaro. After Davy Beaudart (Nauty'mor) won the first stage into Port La Forêt, Pirouelle's is the second consecutive stage win by a rookie skipper.

Of his inshore breakaway from the fleet Dolan said, "Basically it wasn't planned for me to to take that option I just wanted to be upwind of the fleet. I had seen on the files that there was more wind to the north, well I had the impression. During the night, the fleet broke up and I lost everyone a bit. I ended up with 2 or 3 boats, I told myself that I was going to stay on this plan and stay with the North-East wind. Overall the leg was a tough one. In strong winds, I spent 14 hours sitting at the helm, it was a bit hard. But I had anticipated well, I had slept well on the upwind leg. When it came, I had my pockets full of protein bars and bottled water and off we went! It was mental, under small spinnaker, incredible.

Leg 2 provisional:
1. Guillaume Pirouelle - Region Normandie 6:28'26, 3d 17hrs 28mis 26secs.
2. Achille Nebout - Amarris Primeo energie 6:31'45 3d 17hrs 31mis 45sec, + 3mins 19secs.
3. Tom Laperche - Bretagne CMB Performance - 6:44'14 3d 17hrs 44mins 14sec Time behind the winner: 15mins 48sec.
4. Benoit Mariette - Generation Senioriales - 6h 52'10, + 23mins 44 secs.
5. Tom Dolan - IRL, Smurfit Kappa-Kingspan - 7:19'33, + 51 mins 07 secs.

Provisional overall after 2 legs
1. Guillaume Pirouelle - Region Normandie
2. Tom Laperche - Bretagne CMB Performance
3. Achille Nebout - Amarris Primeo energi
4. Benoit Mariette - Generation Senioriales
5. Tom Dolan - IRL, Smurfit Kappa-Kingspan

Leg three takes the fleet from Royan to the Loire-Atlantique (Saint-Nazare) 700 nm offshore.

Bold start launches Dutch into 49er lead - 49er, 49er FX and NACRA Worlds
Nova Scotia, Canada: Bart Lambriex & Floris van der Werken (NED) launched into the lead with a sensational scoreline of 2,1,1 on their side of the qualifying draw in today's three 49er heats. All the Dutch starts were good, but particularly in race 3 when the reigning World Champions risked a port tack start and fired across the front of the blue fleet into the lead.

49er FX
"It's one of those days you're full on, all day," said veteran British FX crew Saskia Tidey, standing on her toes, shaking a bit with goosebumps on her arms, mimicking the flat-out trapezing technique needed in today's solid 15 to 18-knot sea breeze on St. Margaret's Bay.

Even though Tidey and her driver Freya Black moved well up the leaderboard into 8th by winning race four, it seemed like a ton of effort after three races to have the top three in the 49er FX remain virtually unchanged.

NACRA 17
Six wins from six races is unheard of in Olympic class competition, yet that is the standard being set by Tita & Banti a year after winning Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020. The Italian team have embraced the new era of full foiling and the young crew Gianluigi Ugolini and Maria Giubilei (ITA) were easily the second best team of the day with scores of 4,2,2 lifting them to second overall and nine points ahead of the Finnish crew.

Racing at the World Championship runs from August 31 - September 5, 2022

Bournemouth Digital Poole Week - Day 5

Bournemouth Digital Poole Week Although there's still a day to go, the top boats in several of the Poole Week fleets have already secured their victories.

For some it might come as a relief not to have to battle with fickle easterlies for another day. That said, the breeze in the main part of the harbour on Thursday was a good deal steadier than earlier in the week, even if it was on the light side most of the time. And compared with the fleets racing from the committee boat line in the harbour's Top Triangle, those starting from the Parkstone Platform had nothing to complain about. To the west of Brownsea the wind was so light and shifty that the ILCA 6s and 7s, Flying Fifteens and RS200s only managed one race. The crews who won might have been happy, but a significant number of the top boats were down the pan and generally it was considered a race to forget.

The day's action was very much centred around the Parkstone Platform, and it was in these fleets that several of the week's winners were decided. Some even had the luxury of being able to discard a first place - or, in the case of Steve and Ally Tyler in the fast handicap fleet, two of their nine first places. Their Merlin Rocket has an unassailable lead in the overall standings, while Nick Scroggie and Mimi Gorringe, also in a Merlin Rocket, are looking comfortable in second, ahead of the MRX of Mark Candelas and Julie Cronshaw.

Discarding only one first place, along with a second and a third, are Peter Stacey and Suzie Clayton in the Dart 18s - the only fleet to race up South Deep on Thursday. They have a 12-point cushion at the top.

The other boat that can't be beaten is Nigel Yeoman's Dolphin, though Gill Linford wasn't that far behind on Thursday and is now lying fourth, only one point behind Peter and Gaye Harris in third. The Dolphins might have been racing at Parkstone Yacht Club for longer than any other class, and are perhaps not always the first choice of today's youth, but the racing is still pretty keen.

The XODs saw Eric Williams - who has the distinction of having won the class in Cowes Week for three years in succession - score his first win in this year's Poole Week when he ran away with the second race. David Law had the best score of the day, clocking up a 1st and a 3rd to sit in second place overall behind Willie McNeill and Andrew Tredrea.

Friday's forecast is for more light winds. With the added distraction of activities in the sky from the Bournemouth Air Festival, those who continue to concentrate hardest are likely to find their beers tasting best come the end of Friday. -- David Harding

Four J Class Rivals Set for Class Racing at Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup
When four J Class yachts, Ranger, Svea, Topaz and Velsheda line up next week on the beautiful waters of the Costa Smeralda at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, it will be the first time that there has been stand-alone J Class racing at the annual pinnacle event since 2014.

This strong fleet highlights the bourgeoning interest in the J Class once again. Indeed, the first two regattas this season have been won by passionate owners who are new to the class. A debuting Ranger crew triumphed in the Spring in Saint Barths for her new American owner, whilst in early July on the Bay of Palma, Svea now racing under her native Swedish flag with a trio of new Swedish co-owners, won the Superyacht Cup Palma regatta.

But the stakes at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup are undoubtedly the highest since 2014 when Lionheart last lifted the title on the very last race. After six races, the showdown started all-square - any of Ranger, Lionheart, Rainbow could have won the title - but the Dutch flagged team prevailed.

It is entirely possible that this 2022 regatta for the J Class will go to the wire again, there is so little to choose between the four teams. All have very similar levels of experience and successes on the Costa Smeralda and racing up through the La Maddalena archipelago. Velsheda won her class here in 2009, 2013, 2019 and most recently last year in 2021, whilst Topaz won in 2018 against Velsheda and Svea in their mixed Maxi division.

Racing starts Monday 5th September with one day of windward-leewards and four days of coastal courses during the week including a layday Thursday.

Alinghi Red Bull Racing capsizes after first sail in Barcelona
In a statement issued only on social media by the team, they disclosed that after what was described as "a successful day of sailing, Alinghi Red Bull Racing's BoatZero was hit by the violent rain squall, which developed over the city of Barcelona on Wednesday afternoon."

"While towing back with sails down, the boat bounced into the wind and was pushed on to her side.

"Some of the crew members were knocked overboard but were promptly recovered by the support team.

"Everyone returned safe and sound to the team base.

"Alinghi Red Bull Racing's BoatZero suffered minor damage to the port foil arm and to the hull. We will be back on the water soon, carrying on with our preparation for the 37th America´s Cup." says Silvio Arrivabene, Co-General Manager of Alinghi Red Bull Racing.""Some of the crew members were knocked overboard but were promptly recovered by the support team.

Wind recordings from a nearby land based station show a relatively light breeze changing rapidly in direction, and increasing to an average of 25kts, and likely gusts well into the mid-30's accompanied by driving rain. These readings could have been higher on the sailing area.

It is not known if Boat Zero, or Emirates former first generation AC75, was able to get foiling on her first sail. From the land based wind observations the breeze may have been too light for the AC75 to have got foiling without the assistance of a tow from the chase boat. The lazy, but nevertheless significant cross-swell in Barcelona, could also have been a factor.

Specifics of the damage or when Alinghi Red Bull Racing's "Boat Zero" will sail again, are not known.

Ireland's Solo Sailor in the Golden Globe Race Penalised Before Race Starts
Ireland's solo sailor in the Golden Globe Race, Pat Lawless, has been penalised by the organisers even before the race has started.

From Les Sables d'olonne in France this evening (Friday) he sent this message; "I have just been told by the GGR22 people that I have to do a 300-mile sail, as I don't have my logs from the 2,000-mile qualifying trip in 2020. This is such a disappointing thing. But I will head out tonight and get it done. Hoping to make good time. But it will be Monday before I get back to Les Sables d'Olonne, I would think. The GGR22 people need to know that I am able to navigate to the standard needed. "

The GGR non-stop, solo race around the world will start from Les Sables d'olonne on September 4.

Vigilance saved by grant
Vigilance. Photo from National Historic Ships. Click on image to enlarge.

Vigilance Vigilance BM76, the classic Brixham sailing trawler, has been awarded an 820k GBP grant from the Cultural Assets Fund, which is administered by the National Heritage Memorial Fund. The grant will finance vital 'below the waterline' repairs.

The award is a huge relief for all the volunteers as the classic sailing trawler faced an uncertain future without substantial funding.

Brixham would not be the world famous fishing port it is today without boats like Vigilance and this grant is especially important for future generations as it will enable them to understand the fishing heritage of the area.

Vigilance will go into dry dock in Plymouth in September and the work is expected to last around 20 months. The initial task is massive and involves the replacement of the hull and supporting beams. This grant covers just Phase One of the repairs. Further funds are needed to complete the repairs and when Vigilance leaves the shipyard she will be as good as new. Brixham sailing trawlers were built as disposable boats with an expected life of 12 to 15 years. It is a testimony the efforts of the many volunteers over the years that she has survived 96 years and she will now celebrate her centenary in 1926 in fine style.
