Dice Are Rolling Into The Final Night Of Stage 2
With just over 100 nautical miles to the finish line of the 655 miles Stage 2 of La Solitaire du Figaro at 17.00hrs French time this late afternoon the leading group are tightly packed, the solo skippers doing all they can to sniff out the best of the breeze.

Light winds and a patchwork of calms have now prevailed for 24 hours since the leaders slowed first, punching first into contrary tidal current at the Occidental du Sein and the big, beautiful Audierne Bay. The chasing pack came down on the remaining breeze and after a beautiful, almost glassy evening yesterday by this morning there were less than five miles between first and 16th.

Three solo racers have largely profited inshore, closer to the Vendee coast. Ireland’s Tom Dolan (Smurfit Kappa-Kingspan) wriggled clear of 20 year old rookie Basile Bourgnon (EDENRED) around lunchtime, making between two and five knots through periods of the day, almost 20 miles further east than the main peloton and is the nominal leader.

Dolan and Bourgnon were still holding first and second places but their boatspeeds were a crawling 2.5 to 3kts each while their rivals offshore seemed to have the new breeze and were making more than seven knots. The inshore duo still had three miles in hand but it appears the breeze offshore , perhaps thermally enhanced, did not appear to have rolled in far enough for them to profit.

The top three French skippers in the peloton have been glued together since before the turning mark at the Channel Islands on Monday evening, Achille Nebout (Amarris-Primeo Energie) leading rookie Guillaume Pirouelle (Region Normandie) and Tom Laperche (Region Bretagne-CMB Performance) being less than 0.2 of a mile apart as they hunt together as a pack.

Early Shuffle at J/24 European Championship
Howth, Ireland: Two points are separating the top three boats after the second day of the J/24 European Championship, hosted by Howth Yacht Club in Ireland. Another warm, sunny day welcomed the 34 J/24s who completed an additional couple races in winds of 10-12 knots, bringing the current race total to four. Stelios Sotitiou helmed JMania (GRE) to the top of Tuesday’s leaderboard with 23 points. Denny Vaughan’s Easy Street (USA) kept pace to move into second place with 24 points. Another notch back is Stefan Karsunke’s Schwere Jungs (GER).

Comprising the top three of the 21-boat Corinthian Division are Vaughan’s Easy Street, David Hale’s Cacoon (GBR) and James Torr’s MaJic (GBR).

Reigning J/24 European Champions from the Marina Militare Italiana on La Superba (ITA) took line honors in Wednesday’s opening battle, while JP McCaldin’s IL Riccio (IRL) and Hale’s Cacoon (GBR) followed. JMania (GRE) secured the day’s top position by winning the next contest, in advance of Vaughan’s Easy Street (USA) and Louis Mulloy’s Headcase (IRL).

Provident CRM SB20 World Championships
Royal Irish Yacht Club, Dun Laoghaire Harbour, Co. Dublin, Ireland: With less than a week remaining until the biggest annual event for our Class one will be guessing who can be the winner of the coveted trophy this year? Realistically this may be the most open championship for many teams to claim victory. There is a healthy number of registered boats and we are proud to welcome the participants from as far as Australia, Singapore, Dubai and especially from Ukraine.

There will be six new boats delivered for this World Championship. One of the newest boats in the fleet #3821 will be raced by SportsboatWorld’s director Liam Pardy himself, so do stop by to have a look and maybe consider an upgrade/purchase. With all the interest toward new boats the manufacturer has prepared another two new SB20s that are ready to look for their new owners straight after the event.

Another one of the new boats, from the anniversary edition (#3819) will be delivered for the Ares Team from Tasmania. Will Sargent and his team are the 2020 national champions, having also claimed the Youth title and winning the 2022 Tasmanian trophy back in February this year. Sargent, sailing with Eddie Reid, Ed Broadby and Eirini Marios (same crew as for the Worlds), won nine points clear of Michael Cooper’s Export Roo and 13 points in front of sailing legend Nick Rogers on Karabos.

The Australian fleet is also represented by Brett Cooper, who was 5th at the 2019 SB20 Worlds in Hyères, he will be sailing again with Darren Jones and Sam Tiedemann as crew. We will also greet the 2021 Australian National champion - Tasmanian team Mind Games, skippered by Phil Reid sailing with Rohan Langford, Andre Declerck and Esther Read.

The largest fleet, is a mixture of old and new faces from the hosting nation with 17 boats.

Racing for the SB20 World Championship 2022 starts on the 5th September and concludes on the 9th September followed by a prize-giving ceremony. You can follow through SB20 Class social media and website updates on www.sb20class.org for daily results.

Royal Thames J/80s
Royal Thames J/80s RTYC are in process of replacing their fleet of 9 matched J/80s with a new fleet of 12 Sonars.

The J/80s are matched and well maintained as a fleet but are not in class as they are primarily used for team/match racing and therefore adapted with furling jibs and symmetric spinnakers.

They each have 4 wheel road trailers and an extensive inventory of sails – North mains, jibs and symmetric spinnakers. As they have been used for top level events the sails have been graded Gold, Silver and Bronze and there is a full set of each with Gold being in first class condition used only a few times a year.

There is also an extensive inventory of spares ranging from a brand new rudder and tiller, spare winches, masts and furlers etc etc.

The fleet is available immediately for sale and expressions of interest are invited either for the whole fleet or a lesser set of boats.

The Foil Academy FIV Powered By Luna Rossa Makes A Stop On Lake Garda

The Foil Academy FIV Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli's sailors support the young "foiling" athletes with an eye on tomorrow's champions

After the stages in Tuscany and Emilia Romagna, the Foil Academy FIV Powered by Luna Rossa gets to the heart of the matter with the appointment on Lake Garda (3-5 and 12-14 September), where the young athletes who have successfully passed the first phase of the Flight Test on foiling boats (Skeeta, iQFOiL and Waszp) will now also compete on the brand new Persico 69F crewed foiling monohulls.

This second phase of the Academy - called Clinic - will be preparatory for the passage to the final step, the Work Out, where the best sailors will be engaged in real training sessions and in a demo regatta organized within the Barcolana in Trieste.

As in the previous stages, some members of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team will support the young sailors, teaching them the tricks of the flying boats and the secrets of a winning regatta. For the Italian challenger to the 37th America's Cup, the Garda stage will also be an opportunity to closely observe the promising young sailors aboard the Persico 69F and perhaps pick some talent to be trained onboard the AC40, the one-design monohull with which Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli will participate in the Women's and Youth America's Cup events in Barcelona in 2024.

H.C.Press : A famous name in Australian 18 footers sailing
Click on image for photo gallery.

H.C.Press One of the most famous names in Australian 18 footer history is H.C.Press, which must represent a world and Australian record, for continuous sailing of 16 boats bearing the same name and ‘two red horizontal bars’ logo , for a period of 45 years on Sydney Harbour.

The story of the man, Henry Christian Press, after whom the boats are named, and the generations of the Press family which has played such a significant part in the 18 footers’ history, is just as incredible as the record.

Henry Christian Press arrived in Australia as a cabin boy on a ship from Denmark in 1874 and found his way to the Palmer gold fields in 1875 where he was successful in finding gold said to be worth 350 pounds.

He returned to Sydney in 1876 and soon purchased his first boatshed, containing 13 rowing skiffs, on the eastern side of Woolloomooloo Bay, Sydney Harbour. He rented out the rowing skiffs as well as 22-24 sailing skiffs and hired a boat builder who taught him to build boats himself.

Henry married Annie in 1884 and had six children, including three boys Carl, George (Ned), and Syd.

Henry Press encouraged his son George (also known as Ned) to take up sailing seriously, and with family assistance George built two 16 footers before deciding that he wanted to compete against the best open boat racing, and built the first H.C.Press 18 footer, which began its racing career in 1913.

George built a total of 12 H.C.Press 18 footers between 1913 and 1955, ten of which won championship races. He chose the 'two red horizontal bars' (his father's racing colours) logo, which remained the colours on each of the H.C.Press 18 footers and sailed his H.C.Press boats with family members in the crew.

George's follow-up H.C.Press II, in 1921, was the most successful boat racing in Australian waters during the 1920s and was the most successful of all his creations. According to Sydney Flying Squadron (SFS) records, “as owner, his boats won 27 club, Northern Rivers, Port Macquarie, State and Australian championships. As an owner-builder, he also won 15 cups and various other trophies." -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.
