Dolan profits from fast, productive night in the Channel
After two of the toughest, fastest and most demanding spinnaker reaching legs of recent editions of La Solitaire du Figaro - totaling nearly 220 relentless nautical miles - accomplished in winds gusting to over 30kts, only one minute separated the top two leading skippers, Tom Laperche and Guillaume Pirouelle, as they passed the Cardinale Chaussée de Sein buoy mid afternoon today.

One of the quickest skippers overnight was Irishman Tom Dolan on Smurfit Kappa-Kingspan. He was 19th to round the Channel Islands mark last night but by Eddystone - nine miles south of Plymouth - had taken 11 places, sailing fast on a smooth direct course. Others, probably with big kites, sailed low and struggled on the tight reach to the turning mark off south Devon.

Twelfth on the first leg Dolan is up to sixth this evening having made up four miles on the leader since Eddystone. He is more or less side- by-side with his Spanish counterpart and Lorient Grand Large training partner Pep Costa (Team Play 2 B-Terravia) who has not been out of the top ten since Sunday where he sailed well at the point of Penmarch.

But there will be nothing straightforward about the final miles which will be sailed in unsettled, unpredictable light breezes and so there will opportunities for changes right to the finish line.

J/24 European Championship
Howth, Ireland: 34 J/24s vied in two races in winds of 6-10 knots to open to 2022 J/24 European Championship, hosted by Howth Yacht Club in Ireland. Six nations are represented: Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Ireland, Italy and the United States. American Kurt Dammeier, with newly crowned J/24 World Champion Mike Marshall on the crew, took Amuse Bouche to the early advantage with a pair of thirds for 6 points. James Torr's MaJic from Great Britain kept consistent on the day with a 4,5 for 9 points and second place. Fellow American Denny Vaughan on Easy Street holds third place at 11 points.

Comprising the top three of the 21-boat Corinthian Division are Torr's MaJic, Konstantinos Tridimas/Kynthia Skotida on JMania (GRE) and David Hale's Cacoon (GBR).

Sunny skies and warm temperatures greeted competitors for the 11am start to the Championship. Vaughan's Easy Street earned the regatta's first bullet, trailed by Louis Mulloy's Headcase (IRL) and Dammeier's Amuse Bouche. Hale's Cacoon snagged the next victory, ahead of the team from Kinsale Yacht Club (IRL) and again Dammeier in third.

Genoa International Boat Show - New designs
Genoa International Boat Show 7.20 metres wide by 12.58 metres long (the sail area is 111 square meters), the Astréa 42, which Fountaine Pajot will be presenting at the 62nd Genoa International Boat Show, offers large volumes combined with large open spaces.

This cat, which in terms of length follows the Isla 40, was designed by French studio Berret Racoupeau and has retained a number of elements such as the upturned bow and a slender profile which have ensured the success of other shipyard models.

Among the features that stand out, on the flybridge, next to the wheelhouse with a double seat, is a large sundeck in addition to the one on the foredeck. The cockpit, with dining area to port and sofa to starboard, is directly connected to the interior living area with the L-shaped galley to port and sofa forward of the saloon.

There are two versions for the night area: the Maestro version with the owner’s cabin, bathroom and two double cabins with two bathrooms, or the Quatuor, equipped with four double cabins and four bathrooms. The auxiliary power comes from two 30 Hp or 50 Hp engines.

The Genoa Boat Show represents an unmissable event both for the international boating market and for sea lovers and is a global platform for institutional, technical and market comparison for the whole sector 365 days a year. The 2022 edition opens September 22.

It’s is not just the tools - UK Sailmakers
UK Sailmakers ...it's about how you use them. And after 30-plus years of intensive development UK Sailmakers reckon they can use them pretty well!

UK Sailmakers' lead designer Pat Considine's capabilities and skills in the use of state-of-the-art sail design software are at world-class level. There are many things in life that you may know how to do... but can you do it on a world-class level? Sure, you know how to drive, but could you win a Formula One race? You know how the pieces on a backgammon board are moved, but can you beat a master backgammon player? You know how to sail, but can you win a foiling moth championship?

Sure, your sailmaker may know how to use a computer to design a sail, but does your sailmaker know how to make that design software perform at a level comparable with winning that F-1 race, making a living playing backgammon, or being the foiling Moth World Champ? Probably not.

Cascais Vela 2022
The 22nd edition of Cascais Vela took place from August 26th to 29th , already traditional in Cascais on the last weekend of August.

In addition to the colossal sports program, the championship also had a strong social component: "happy hours" and the mythical "Bye Bye Summer" party, which brought together around 2,000 people at Clube Naval de Cascais.

The approximately 220 sailors, distributed among the four classes - SB20, Finn, ORC and NHC - had three days of excellent conditions for practicing the sport, as usual in Cascais.

During the race, the competitors were able to compete with all kinds of conditions, from light wind to strong wind, as well as from all directions.

In SB20, Desafio Mitsubishi, 9 races were held, the winner being BTeam, Stanislav Gordienko with Artem Basalkin and Ilava Pavlov, who was unstoppable today and won the three races of the last day.

At the Finns, Frederico Pinheiro de Melo, Olympic sailor, won 7 of the 8 races held, thus rising to the highest place on the podium. -- Maria Jose Cardoso

XVIII Copa del Rey - Repsol / Vela Clasica Menorca
Photo by Luis Fernandez / lamarsalada.info. Click on image for photo gallery.

Vela Clasica Menorca This past week, 49 boats from 10 countries moored at the docks of the port of Menorca, opposite the Mahón Maritime Club, to compete in the XVIII Copa del Rey Repsol de Barcos de Epoca, a competition considered to be the most important of its kind in Spain and one of the five most prestigious in the Mediterranean.

Friday saw the start of the competition with an unprecedented start on the island: the line located inside the bay, in front of the Club's facilities. The north wind encouraged the Race Committee, led by official Ariane Mainemare, to make this risky start, complicated by the size and restricted manoeuvring of some of the boats, as well as the number of boats and the usual traffic in the port. But without any problem, five separate starts were possible, one per class, at intervals of several minutes, which filled this natural harbour, considered one of the largest in the world, with beautiful wooden sailing boats rigged with crab and Bermudian sails.

The rest of the days the sailings took place in front of La Mola to sail routes of between 7 and 20 miles depending on the class and the intensity and direction of the wind. These routes ran along the beautiful crust of the island, which alternates cliffs, coves, beaches, defence and watchtowers, caves... and of course, the emblematic Isla del Aire, with its photogenic lighthouse, the King's Island inside the port and the natural cliff crowned with canyons of La Mola... quite a visual spectacle! The arrivals were scheduled every day in front of the club year, and they could be carried out except during the second day, when the fall of the wind made it advisable to shorten the competition at the entrance of the port. -- Luis Fernandez

The Jubilee Sailing Trust Ltd, subsidiary of The Jubilee Sailing Trust has been put into administration

The decision was made after a principal creditor threatened imminent legal proceedings to reclaim owed credit.

The Jubilee Sailing Trust, a registered charity, operates through two subsidiaries - Jubilee Sailing Trust Ltd, and Jubilee Sailing Trust (Tenacious) Ltd.

Jubilee Sailing Trust Ltd owns the decommissioned STS Lord Nelson

The Jubilee Sailing Trust (Tenacious) Ltd owns and operates the tall ship SV Tenacious and will remain trading with the Trust emphasising that Tenacious remains operational and will continue delivering the current voyage programme as planned.

The Trust was badly hit during Covid and launched its Covid Recovery Campaign to raise funds to help it continue trading.

Since April 2022 £890,897 has been raised, however the Trust says despite this support, the difficult decision to enter administration needed to be made.

The Trust is attempting to sell Lord Nelson but says this is not possible within the timeframe given.

Spirit Yachts will show two electric drive sailing yachts at this year's Southampton International Boat Show, its new Spirit 44CR cruiser racer and a Spirit 30.

Spirit Yachts' new 44CR and Spirit 30 will be on show at SIBS 2022

The 44ft (13.4m) Spirit 44CR has a 65kgs Oceanvolt ServoProp15 sail drive, which is powered by a battery bank of eight 7.2kWh batteries totalling 57.6kWh in capacity.

Weather dependent, the yacht has a range of 53nm at 6 knots.

Total regeneration capability of the Spirit 44CR depends on weather conditions, but test sails have seen 1.5kW at 8knots of sailing speed.
