Laperche Leads to Channel Islands Ready For The Fast Reach to Eddystone
With some 25 nautical miles of hard upwind sailing into a building easterly breeze the leading group on Stage 2 of La Solitaire du Figaro can anticipate rounding the Desormes Bank buoy between 22.00hrs and 23.00hrs this evening. After the day long beat up the Channel to the mark between Jersey and Guernsey there will be no time to relax. Indeed the fast, wet 90 miles reach to Eddystone Rock light will require careful sail selection as the wind is forecast to top 25kts through what promises to be a key stage of the 635 nautical miles leg to Royan which started Sunday afternoon from Port-la-Foret.

Tom Laperche (Region Bretagne-CMB Performance) has been a solid leader through the day even if his margin over second placed Achille Nebout (Amarris-Primeo Energie) has hovered around the half a mile mark all through the day. Beating into a growing sea in 15-19kts of wind he has been preserving himself as best as possible, knowing what lies ahead through tonight and tomorrow.

In contrast Tom Dolan (Smurfit Kappa-Kingspan) of Ireland, Brit Alan Roberts (Seacat Services) and Germany's Jorg Riechers(Alva Yachts) - top international on Leg 1 in fourth - dropped last night and are in the 20s but will be keeping their powder dry for the fast reaching and knowing the final stage back down the Brittany and Vendee coasts to Royan look set to offer opportunities all the way to the finish.

Flying Fifteen Cowes, Isle of Wight, UK: Andy Mckee and Richard Jones are worthy new 2022 European Champions

The 75th Anniversary Flying Fifteen European Championship came to a fitting close on another semi-overcast but warm, humid (for the Solent!) day. There was a short delay of an hour to wait for the wind to fill, which it did, to start one final 3 lap race at 1330hrs on the second attempt.

The wind averaged 10 - 12 knots from around NW in direction, with a slightly stronger ebbing tide improving upwind boat speeds by a shade. With a second series race discard coming into play the maths was a bit complicated but Andy Mckee and Richard Jones did enough with an 18th finish in the last race to win the championship. The pair from Dovestone SC / Shotwick Lake SC counted four race wins and an overall net points score of 25 points.

Their nearest threat before the last race of the series was Richard Lovering and Matt Alvarado (WYC / HISC) but the Hyde Sails pair suffered a bad start and struggled deep in the pack for the first two laps, deciding to throw in the towel and retire.

The Classic fleet trophy went to Graham Latham and Sara Briscoe from Parkstone YC. The trophy for best local sailors went to Henry Bagnall and James Downer.

This event staged by Cowes Corinthian YC brings to a close two weeks of thoroughly successful and enjoyable F15 sailing on the Solent on this the 75th anniversary of the class. -- Jonny Fullerton of Regatta Services on behalf of FFI

Alex Thomson: "I Would Definitely Like To Do Another Competitive Vendee Campaign"
On Wednesday Canadian businessman Scott Shawyer announced the launch of Canada Ocean Racing an initiative intended to take him to the Vendee Globe 2028. It is a long term a project which will be a collaboration with Alex Thomson Racing across all the facets of the business. And it was an overdue opportunity for Tip & Shaft to catch up with Thomson who is obviously not finished with the Vendee Globe.

What was the genesis of this project Alex, where did it all start? It was when Scott was locked down in Canada. He knew about the race before - he is an A Class catamaran sailor, he has a cruising catamaran, he is a lifetime sailor, he knew about the Vendee Globe and Gerry Roufs, but he had never followed it like everyone ended up doing so last time. He was completely inspired by the race, the stories of resilience and so on. And he told me all about Kevin Escoffier's rescue story. He could not understand why more Canadians did not know about it. He is a successful businessman in his own right. He saw how big it is in France, and people outside of France still don't understand how big is the Vendee Globe, and then he touched base with us. And he could see how it all works in other markets - for Koji (Kojiro Shiraishi) in Japan, in Germany with Boris (Herrmann) and us. He thought 'why can't I do this?' He wants to be the first Canadian person to complete the race. Overall he wants to build up the skills levels in Canada.

Who spoke to who first? He came to us one year ago. As an international team we get a lot of people come to us with the idea, the dream to do the Vendee Globe but really don't realise what it takes. Most are put off really by the schedule and what you have to achieve before you get to the start line. I gave him a realistic idea of the amount of sailing he will need to do if he wanted me to take on this project and work with him. He was not phased. But the exciting bit that gets me is the opportunity to break into a new market, to go to a new country where 30 per cent already speak French, that is an advantage, Canada already has an ocean race Quebec Saint Malo which starts there. I have been to Canada twice in the last 15 years with our programme, in 2019 with the last Hugo Boss, I can see what people feel about it straight away. I can see that fans travelled from half way across Canada to see the boat and meet the team. And so I think that is the big motivation for us is to be able to create an audience and help build a sustainable business model in Canada.

Light in every sense - McConaghy boats
McConaghy Put designer Malcolm McKeon together with McConaghy Boats and the result could never be less than extraordinary... also in every sense

McConaghy Boats have partnered with Malcolm McKeon to launch a range of stylish highperformance cruiser-racers from 78ft to 120ft in length. A conscious decision has been taken to eschew exaggerated reverse sheer lines and other "modern" design clues in favour of a minimalist, understated and slightly classical look. The aim here is to produce a boat whose performance surpasses expectations, rather than a boat that just looks the part.

McConaghy knows a thing or two about building cutting edge raceboats; the company's reputation is founded on building yachts such as the all-conquering Wild Oats XI, and as a result it is no surprise to hear they are currently building nine AC40 foiling one-designs for America's Cup teams. This sort of pedigree means they should be taken seriously when they say they want to shake up the Maxi racing scene.
