Laperche and Dolan Lead As Figaro Stage 1 Course is Shortened
With the course now shortened by 85 miles to 559 nautical miles because of intermittent periods of light winds, the leaders on Stage 1 of the 2002 La Solitaire du Figaro should round a virtual waypoint at the mouth of the Bristol channel late this Tuesday night where they will turn for the finish line in Port-la-Forêt, Brittany some 230 miles to the south.

The stage winners are expected some time on Thursday morning, the course being shortened to ensure that all 34 competing solo racers get sufficient time to recover before Sunday's re-start for Stage 2.

Pre-race favourite Tom Laperche (Region Bretagne-CMB Performance) who has two overall podium finishes already has slightly extended his lead, moving out to be 2.7 nautical miles ahead of Ireleand's Tom Dolan (Smurfit Kappa-Kingspan) who in turn is just over one mile ahead of audacious French rookie Basile Bourgnon (eDeNReD). The 20-year-old, whose Swiss dad Laurent won the 1988 La Solitaire on his first attempt, made a big move to the west last night and gained 19 places, stealing third from Brit Alan Roberts (Seacat Services). Roberts is in a tightly spaced group alongside Corentin Horeau (Mutuelle Bleue) both tussling over fourth and fifth place.

Laperche led at Bishop Rock, 16 minutes up on Dolan and 27 minutes ahead of Bourgnon.

Snipe World Championship Day 2
Day 2 of the Snipe World Championship in Cascais, Portugal started with a delayed starting time giving the sailors some time to reserve energy. As the sailors set off for the race course, the wind was light leaving the harbor, but began to build steadily with big shifts, causing the Race Committee to move the course 3 times to find suitable conditions for racing. After 2 hours, the sequence began in 18 knots with the RC signaling a double triangle course, as recommended by the Snipe Class rules.

The new leader is Alfredo Gonzalez and Cristian Sanchez (eSP) who have sailed a consistent 4–9-3 to put them atop the leaderboard. Henrique Haddad/Gustavo Nascimento (BRA) posted a 6-14-8, Americans enrique Quintero and Charlie Bess moved into 3rd overall with a 14-8-9, Perez Campos and Noguera move into 4th with a 27-1-5 and yesterdays leaders Mario Sergio de Jesus and Henrique Wisneiwski (BRA) falling to 5th overall due to a check-in failure when arriving back to shore.

The championship continues tomorrow with 2 races scheduled and the possibility of a 3rd since the schedule is behind 1 race. The discard does not factor in until 7 races are completed. The wind forecast for the remainder of the week looks to be more manageable. The final races scheduled for Thursday, August 25. -- Jerelyn Biehl

Harken MKIV and MKIV Ocean Furlers: Family Resemblance, Yes. Identical Twins, No. Here's How To Tell Them Apart.
Harken Early indications are that Harken's new MKIV Ocean headsail furler is a hit. We think that might be because we asked cruising sailors what they wanted—and we built that.

The Ocean furler, as we call it, is built on the chassis of our trusted MKIV furler. Owners and riggers alike praise MKIV for the component efficiency which makes furling easier and for how smoothly it converts from racing foil to furling drum for deliveries or all vacation long. It's been proven over thousands of miles of combined duty both inshore and offshore.

Their names are similar. They share components. Both are designed for intuitive assembly and retrofit. Both can be installed at the dock…without taking the mast down…in an afternoon. So just how do MKIV and MKIV Ocean differ? Which features were voted off to assure MKIV Ocean comes with its less racy price? The Harken Tech Team compares and contrasts the two in this new video.

SITraN Challenge finished, Golden Globe Race Ready to go
With the finish of the SITraN Challenge from Gijon to Le Sables D'Olonne, the GGR Fleet is assembled for the first time on the Golden Globe Race dock.

Damien Guillou (FR) on his Rustler 36 PRB was the first to cross the finish line in the dark at 0630 local time, having sailed solo from Gijon, mostly under spinnaker. The race was "pretty full-on" Damien said on arrival, as he had to contain the attacks of Simon and Nikki Curwen (UK) who also flew spinnakers on the Biscay 36 Clara, for a long beam reach from the Asturian coastline, arriving just 53 minutes behind PRB. One hour later, South African sailor Kirsten Neuschäfer on her Cape George 36 Minnehaha arrived 3rd on the finish line, having reached under working jib and staysail only in what she considered fast cruising! All three have staked a claim on the ultimate prize of winning the GGR!

GGR Veteran Abhilash Tomy (IN) on his Rustler 36 Bayanat was doing well and in the lead with Damien Guillou, before a collision with a bulk carrier in the morning of the second day. Abhilash was below deck with his manager on watch at the time. There were no injuries and the ship stood by for two hours while the crew checked the yacht then resumed sailing. The yacht's bow needs serious composite work before the race starts on Sept. 4th just three weeks away. Abhilash has taken the mast off for a complete rig check, and has a team coming from Belgium led by Dutch designer and builder Dick Koopmans bringing a full Rustler bow with them. Bayanat will be back in the water and functional on August 29.

Other skippers are in Les Sables d'Olonne meeting with the fleet for the first time, with Graham Dalton (NZ) back from his 2,000 nm GGR qualification. He has submitted a new application to re-join having previously resigned, which was accepted by the organisers, and the fleet now has 17 official entrants.

The GGR departs from Les Sables-d'Olonne, France on September 4th, 2022 and sail solo, non-stop around the world, via the five Great Capes and return to Les Sables-d'Olonne.

Bar Talk - Bellino & Mzungu!
In the 2022 Sevenstar Round Britain & Ireland Race the battle to be the first Two-Handed team to finish was extraordinary, with two teams in sight of each other for 15 days of match racing. Rob Craigie & Deb Fish racing Sun Fast 3600 Bellino was the first double-handed team to cross the line. After 1,805 miles of racing, JPK 1080 Mzungu! raced by Sam White & Sam North was just 10 minutes behind.
