Medallia Takes Line Honours - 20 boats round Muckle Flugga

Morning After IMOCA Medallia, skippered by Pip Hare, took Line Honours in the Sevenstar Round Britain & Ireland Race in an elapsed time of 10 days 13 hours 23 minutes and 22 seconds. High pressure had dominated the early part of the race causing the Medallia team to take over seven days to get to Muckle Flugga. The second half of the course was much quicker with Medallia taking just over three days to finish the race in the early hours of Thursday 18 August. As Medallia crossed the finish line at the southern extremity of the course, the tenacious teams at the back of the fleet were rounding Muckle Flugga to the very north with near gale conditions. James McHugh’s Tquila is leading the Class40s, but fickle breeze, 350 miles from the finish line is making for tense decisions in the North Sea.

IRC Classes Update
For the overall win under IRC, the competition is getting even more intense with less than four hours separating the top three after time correction. Eight of the top 10 ranked teams are all racing in IRC Two-Handed. Rob Craigie & Deb Fish on Sun Fast 3600 Bellino is still in pole position. Sam White & Sam North on JPK 1080 Mzungu! is second and Richard Palmer and Rupert Holmes on JPK 1010 Jangada is third. The most miles raced in the last 24 hours by a Two-Handed team is Gavin Howe and Maggie Adamson’s Sun Fast 3600 Tigris. One of the top performers of the fully crewed boats is the Army Sailing Association’s Sun Fast 3600 Fujitsu British Soldier, which is now ranked fourth overall.

By 0400 on Day 12 of the Sevenstar Round Britain & Ireland Race all of the boats racing had rounded Muckle Flugga, with First 40.7 Polished Manx II raced by Kuba Szymanski & Adrian Kucmin, the 20th to feel the joy of making the top of the course. “Polished Manx is making sure that there is no one left behind, I can safely report,” commented Kuba as Polished Manx headed south.

Bernaz leads Day One of the 2022 Detroit Cup
Detroit, Michigan, USA: After 9 flights completed today among 11 teams from 7 nations, Jean-Baptiste Bernaz (FRA) and his Mistral Gagnant team lead the competition in the Grade 2 Detroit Cup with an unblemished record of 8-0. Runner-up in the standings is Ryan Seago (USA) and his team from the host Bayview Yacht Club.

In this first day of racing conditions were varied, at times with a very steady easterly of 6-10 knots, very sailable in Bayview YC’s stable of ten Ultimate 20’s, to being very shifty in a highly variable 6-12 knot southerly coming off the Canadian shore of the event venue on the Detroit River.

Bernaz and his team demonstrated excellence in all skillsets - pre-starts, course management, speed and superior boat handling - throughout the day, which was impressive given this being their first competition at this venue and in the Ultimate 20’s.

Round Robin match race sailing continues tomorrow in Day Two of the Detroit Cup, which concludes on Sunday, August 21.

Olympic revival suffers from weak wind
Big effort, little return: sailors and race committee struggled for usable results on the second day of the revival of the 1972 Olympic sailing regattas. At around 12 noon, race officers Fabian Bach (Tempest) and Robert Niemczewski (Dragon) sent their fleets onto the course. They gave everything, tried to start several times. What remained in the evening, however, was only one race for the Tempest, who thus have two races in the list for their World Championship ranking. At the top there was a change. Hannes Brochier/Peter Kern are now leading ahead of the opening winners Lars and Leif Bähr.

At the jetty there was a mooring beer and "Hells Bells" by AC/DC, on the water before only a lukewarm breeze. The Dragons struggled on the outer course for a long time, but in the end in vain. "We tried three attempts, in the third I let them go. But the wind shifted and pumped too much, so I had to abort after a few minutes," explained race director Robert Niemczewski. Martin Görge had to pause for a moment when asked if the decision was right, but said: "The wind was difficult, but the decision was okay. For us, though, it was unfortunate. It was just looking so good when it was called off. We were tacking on the layline, had the whole field in the window and would have certainly arrived in a top position at the first buoy," said the Kieler, who would have liked to sail at least a few short test races regardless of official races to make good use of the hours on the water.

The Dragon sailors cannot expect to be spared on the next two days. Since they will only sail until Saturday, race director Niemczewski plans to bring forward the run-out time to start three races each.

There is a little more composure among the Tempest, who are still sailing their World Cup until Sunday and after two days at least already have two races in the list. Lucky winners on the day were defending world champions Markus Wieser/Thomas Auracher.

The forecast is for strong winds on Sunday and Monday with the forecast for decreasing breeze the remainder of the week. F-18 Raid World Championship 2022 Day two
A day of tactics into the fog, and a Swedish team in the lead.

The start of the sailing on the was postponed due to prognosis of light winds. And the teams could have a soft wake up in the morning. The start was set to 11 o’clock and by then there was warm weather and a steady breeze at about 6 to 10 knots. The wind came from Northeast and it became a long upwind to Sandhamn. What also came in was fog.

Despite the sometimes bad visibility it turned out to be a day of a tactical game. Where it really paid off to find the right shifts. And Belgian team Patrick Demesmaeke and Olivier Gagliani won both races. But they are not on top of the podium. After four races Swedish team Jakob Lundqvist and Rasmus Rosengren are number one, second is Australians Brett Burvill and Bailey Skewes and on third Patrick Demesmaeke and Olivier Gagliani from Belgium. The difference however, between the three teams are just two points.

Tomorrow promise to be a highlight of the F18 Raid World Championships. The race will crisscross through the spectacular outer archipelago in three races, with more downwind than we have had up till know.

Irish Trio Flying The Tricolour On La Solitaire du Figaro
After the host nation, France, which fields 25 of the 34 skippers, Ireland -along with England - has the second biggest representation in the 53rd La Solitaire du Figaro, the French solo offshore race which takes place each summer off the Atlantic and Channel coasts. Three Irish solo racers are set to compete on solo sailing’s absolute pinnacle event which starts on Sunday with a 635 miles stage.

French based Tom Dolan (Smurfit Kappa-Kingspan) moved to France 12 years ago to pursue his dreams of top level solo racing. He scored a fifth overall in 2020, the best finish by any non-French skipper for nearly 20 years and is looking to go better this time after a disappointing 16th last year.

Dun Laoghaire’s sailing coach, sailing school owner Kenny Rumball (Offshore Racing Academy), 35 is back for a second attempt after racing as a rookie in 2020. And Howth entrepreneur and amateur offshore racer Conor Fogarty, 51, (Immunex365.co.uk) is out to complete La Solitaire du Figaro for the first time as a learning experience.

Denmark chasing breakthrough SailGP event win on home waters in Copenhagen
Having made its first ever event final last time out at the Great Britain Sail Grand Prix in Plymouth, the Denmark SailGP Team presented by ROCKWOOL is looking to go one better and make a serious statement to the rest of the competition by claiming its first event win this weekend at the ROCKWOOL Denmark Sail Grand Prix | Copenhagen.

The significant hurdle for Danish ambitions is likely to be a resurgent New Zealand team, with Peter Burling finally living up to the high expectations held of his team with a victory at the Great Britain event. It was a win that broke a run of five event victories in a row for Tom Slingsby’s Australia SailGP Team, and the defending champions are sure to feature heavily again over the next two days.

Copenhagen is the fourth of 11 venues that will form the Season 3 calendar. Saint-Tropez in France is the next stop for SailGP, before the fleet visits Cádiz, Dubai, Singapore, Sydney, Christchurch and finally finishing in San Francisco, May 2023.

Racing starts at 3.30pm local time and is live on TV2 in Denmark. For all the details on how to watch around the globe, visit SailGP.com/watch
