Epic Duels in the Sevenstar Round Britain & Ireland Race
At 1000 BST on Day 11, sixteen teams have rounded Muckle Flugga and turned their bows south into the North Sea. Finally the majority of the fleet are enjoying fast downwind conditions. Four teams are still to round the lighthouse on the rocky outcrop on the 61st Parallel. Rob Craigie & Deb Fish racing Sun Fast 3600 Bellino are the latest team in pole position for the best corrected time under IRC. At least seven teams in IRC Two-Handed are still very much in contention for overall glory. Three Class40s are having an intense and tactical battle in the North Sea and Pip Hare's IMOCA Medallia is 140 miles from the finish and expected to take Line Honours tonight - Wednesday 17th August.

Rob Craigie racing Sun Fast 3600 Bellino with Deb Fish is ranked first in IRC Overall and in IRC Two-Handed. Second in the ranking is Richard Palmer's Jangada racing with Rupert Holmes. Nick Martin's Sun Fast 3600 Diablo is third. However, the battle in the double-handed warriors is not just among the top three; the class win and potentially overall victory is still wide open.

Sam White & Sam North racing JPK 1080 Mzungu! was the first Two-Handed team to round Muckle Flugga and was second after time correction. However, Mzungu! hit a wind hole just as the pair were readying for the downwind sleigh ride. The close nature of the race was exemplified by the fact that by just hitting one wind hole, it sent the team from second to fourth in a matter of a few hours. Mzungu! is the highest rated boat of the leading pack and has especially been battling through thick and thin for 11 days with Bellino. As Mzungu! wallowed in the wind hole, Bellino escaped to lead Mzungu! on the water by 11 miles.

While the gradient wind is currently from the north, it is decreasing in speed and the split gybes are probably a result of searching for the best wind lines. By tomorrow the wind is forecast to go south and increase to over 20 knots. However, the centre of this high pressure system is directly on the rhumb line. Mussulo 40 will have sailed many more miles but may get fast downwind conditions around the high. Positioning for this major change is going to be a crucial strategy for the Class40s. -- Louay Habib

Red Funnel Regatta
The Etchells class gathered for the 2022 Red Funnel regatta organised by RLYC. 15 boats turned out, including visitors from the USA and AUS, despite a forecast for light airs before an unstable sea breeze each afternoon. The race officer Bob Milner, wisely chose to put the AP up for one hour, waiting for the sea breeze to fill. The boats went out early to practice. The sea breeze was stable just south of due east, and the windward mark was laid at around 120 all day. This left the prospect of the north channel in play for those going left up the beat, while in the centre of the course the adverse tide was expected to be weaker.

With a fourth race brought forward on Saturday based on a forecast of a late start on Sunday, the fleet were forced to look at the exciting transition part of winning tides, with the tide swinging more to be North to South, across the racecourse. The wind had built to produce consistent white horses. A single boat was caught by the U flag, and the fleet continued to race to the lefthand corner, taking the tide as a starboard lee bow. The fourth race was the closest, with all 14 boats between the windward mark and the spreader at one point. Laurie Smith was able to collect a second race win, but with no discard until five races sailed Peter Duncan on Oatmeal led overnight.

The race committee listened to the suggestion of the fleet to announce a 1 hour AP for Sunday morning.

Arriving at the dock on Sunday morning, the fleet found no wind. After a further delay the wind did fill in at the race area at around 1pm, but there was no wind in the Medina, and after a discussion with the fleet, and with any start needing to be before 3pm, the race committee flew N over A at 1.30.

The visitors were well rewarded, both finished on the podium.
1. USA 1506 - Oatmeal - Peter Duncan/Andrew Palfrey/Mark Mandleblatt
2. GBR 1502 - Mila - Lawrie Smith / Richard Parslow / Gonçalo Ribeiro / Ruairidh Scott
3. AUS 1503 - Tango - Chris Hampton / Elliot Hanson / Sam Haines

Aspire wins 5.5 Metre Swiss Open at Brunnen after Ali Baba fight back
Aspire (POL 17, Mateusz Kusznierewicz, Przemysław Gacek, Edward Wright) has won the 5.5 Metre Swiss Open at Brunnen on Lake Lucerne, hosted by Regattaverein Brunnen, on Wednesday. Ali Baba (BAH 23, Flavio Marazzi, Gregoire Siegwart, Max Salminen) won both races on the final day to move up to second overall, with New Moon III (BAH 25, Mark Holowesko, Christoph Burger, Hervé Cunningham) placing 2,3 to end the event in third.

For the second day in a row, the fleet of 16 boats from six countries were treated to tropical blue water sailing conditions. The ridiculous beauty of Lake Lucerne was intensified by the fabulous hot and sunny weather, though that is forecast to disappear for the rest of the week, with the second regatta starting Thursday.

The results may indicate a domination by Aspire, but the racing was incredibly close at times with just a few boat lengths separating many at the finish.

Final Results - Swiss Open

Alan Roberts Leads British Hopes On 53rd La Solitaire du Figaro
alan Roberts Setting out on his ninth challenge Alan Roberts (Seacat Services) is the top hope of the three British solo sailors who start the 53rd edition of La Solitaire du Figaro on Sunday off Saint Michel Chef Chef, a pretty seaside town on the south side of the Loire estuary opposite Saint Nazaire. David Paul, 26, (Just A Drop) returns for his second La Solitaire after a baptism by fire last year whilst La Solitaire first timer Piers Copham, 60, (Voile des Anges) is a business consultant who taught himself to sail as a child in the NW of Scotland, after tens of thousands of and is continuing a Mini650 program this season alongside his Figaro Benetau 3 training and racing.

Roberts, career best 9th in 2015, 11th in 2021 and 10th in 2020, has posted an encouraging set of consistent results so far this season, third in the Solo Maitre Coq, fifth in the Le Havre All Mer Cup and tenth on the Solo Concarneau and believes he has everything in place to mount a realistic challenge for overall victory or a place on the podium.

Even though he is on a tight budget compared with his leading French counterparts, Roberts has built himself a small support team to relieve some of the stress and pressure on shore by fine tuning and managing his logistics and schedule, not least to maximise his rest and recovery times, as well as on shore meteo and strategy support from Volvo Round the World winners Jules Salter and French based Jack Bouttell, an experienced Figarist who last raced the 2020 edition. Salter advises on big picture meteo forecasting whilst Bouttell is like an on-shore, remote co-skipper, a second brain to back up on small scale timings and developments.

Atlantic 55 Javelin For Sale
Atlantic 55 Javelin For Sale Launched in 2003, Atlantic 55 Javelin is the designer's personal boat. She is light, fast, safe and comfortable. The Atlantic 55 and her siblings are sought after by cruising sailors who know sailing.

The A55 was designed from the start to be a high performance world cruising catamaran. She turns heads in every cruising anchorage. With huge underwing clearance, sleek hulls, lightweight but super strong epoxy/glass/carbon construction and a powerful sailplan the Atlantic 55 delivers ALL the oft promised but seldom realized advantages of a cruising catamaran.

Neither race boat nor charter barge, the Atlantic 55 design is 100% focused on providing for the needs of cruising sailors. Combining a superior blend of ease of handling, excellent windward ability and full crew protection in the unique pilothouse layout there is not another catamaran design built anywhere in the world that offers a better blend of features.

The powerful sailplan with self tacking jib allows tacking upwind with only a push of the autopilot button. Consistently able to make good 90 degrees between tacks (over the bottom) with excellent speed, there is no production cruising catamaran that will outsail an Atlantic Catamaran. And most often the differences are enormous.

Ease of handling.
Sail Handling functions are performed for most situations from the midship cockpit, a unique feature developed in the Atlantic Catamarans for the last 35 years (although there have been some recent imitators). Anchoring, sail hoisting, reefing and tacking all happens within easy reach of the wheel and with complete forward visibility. A true singlehanders boat!

Seakeeping is exceptional.
Where the majority of cruising cats pound their underwings when sailing in the open ocean the generous clearance of the wing deck and slender hull forebody of the Atlantic 55 makes pounding practically non-existent.

Atlantic 55 Javelin is located in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Cocktail Hour With The Albariño Gimlet
Gimlet August 1 was International Albariño Day, a holiday created by two men determined to discover the best wine of 1952, using the Albariño grape, a Spanish variety used in white wines. The grape has a botanical aroma with a citrus undertone and this recipe from harneylane.com offers a perfect summertime drink. Mixing mint tea, sugar, Albariño wine, gin and lime juice creates a crisp, clean tasting gimlet. Read more.

Albariño's universal appeal and bright fruit character make it an excellent pairing wine. We opted to take that to the next level with this summer-ready Albariño Gimlet.

Syrup Ingredients:
2 Cups sugar
1 Cup water
1 Mint tea bag

Cocktail Ingredients:
1/2 oz Mint simple syrup, above
1 1/2 oz Albariño (or crisp white wine)
1 1/2 oz Gin
1 oz Fresh lime juice
A pinch of sea salt
1 Fresh spring mint for garnish

Instructions: To make the mint tea syrup, heat water over medium low heat until warmed. Add sugar and stir until fully dissolved. Do not boil. Once dissolved, remove from heat and add 1 mint tea bag to steep, approximately 5 minutes. We are going for just a hint of mint! Cool to room temperature and store remaining syrup in the refrigerator for later use.

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add all ingredients, above. Shake very well. Strain into a glass with one ice cube or serve neat, depending on your glassware. Top with mint or garnish of your choice. -- Hat tip to George Day at CruisingOdyssey.com
