ORCi Europeans
It came down to the last inshore race of the series for the winners and podium positions to be determined at the 2022 ORCi European Championship.

In Class A going into the final day, the Gold medal was assured to go to Michael Berghorn’s team on his Mills 45 Custom HALBTROCKEN (GER) for their outstanding record of straight bullets in the inshore races and 2nd and 4th places, respectively, in the Mills Long and Short Offshore Races. Berghorn earned a Class A ORC Worlds title last year, and this is his first ORC European title.\

In Class B there was a battle for Gold among some of the two highest-rated boats in the 21-entry class: these were two Mark Mills-designed Landmark 43’s – Jens Kuphal’s INTERMEZZO (GER) and Torkjel Valland’s WHITE SHADOW (NOR). The two have been replicating their similar rivalry at the 2018 ORC/IRC Worlds in The Hague when INTERMEZZO was sailed as SANTA under its previous Norwegian owner, Claus Landmark. In both the same boat won by a close margin.

In Class C today the leading team had things well in hand for their ORC European Champion title, with two firsts, four seconds and one third place in their score line. With another bullet earned in today’s race Aivar Tuulberg’s Arcona 340 KATARIINA II (EST) has won their third Europeans title, the first in 2016 in Porto Carras, Greece and the next in Limassal, Cyprus in 2018. This is his first earned in northern Europe closer to his home waters in Estonia. -- Dobbs Davis

Aspire returns to 5.5 Metre circuit to dominate opening day of Swiss Open
The 5.5 Metre class is famous for going to nice venues, but no one was really prepared for how nice the first day of the 2022 Swiss Open turned out. Aspire (POL 17, Mateusz Kusznierewicz, Przemysław Gacek, Edward Wright) took three race wins to lead overnight with Caracole (SUI 214, Bernard Haissly, Nicolas Berthoud, Daniel Stampfli) winning the third race to sit in second on equal points with Ali Baba (BAH 23, Flavio Marazzi, Max Salminen, Gregoire Siegwart).

With the forecast for the next few days looking less than pleasant, the race officer took the decision to run four races on Tuesday and with 8-12 knots and searing temperatures it was a day of tropical sailing in Switzerland. The two-day Swiss Open is being hosted by Regattaverein Brunnen, on Lake Lucerne, followed by the two-day Rigi Cup. The fleet consisted o 16 5.5 Metres from six nations.

There were a couple of new, though familiar, faces sailing today. Former Finn world champions Max Salminen, from Sweden, and Brit, Ed Wright were competing in their first 5.5 races.

Aspire has been absent all season due to injury and had to pull out of the recent world championship, but they returned to the circuit today with Ed Wright replacing Simon Fry at the front and put on a good showing, winning three races and coming a close second in the third. -- Robert Deaves

Top five after 4 races
1. Aspire (POL 17, Mateusz Kusznierewicz, Przemysław Gacek, Edward Wright) 3 points
2. Caracole (SUI 214, Bernard Haissly, Nicolas Berthoud, Daniel Stampfli) 7
3. Ali Baba (BAH 23, Flavio Marazzi, Max Salminen, Gregoire Siegwart) 7
4. New Moon III (BAH 25, Mark Holowesko, Christoph Burger, Hervé Cunningham) 10
5. Marie Françoise XXII (SUI 232, Jürg Menzi-Schmid, Jürgen Eiermann, Andreas Honegger) 14

505 World Championship
Cork, Ireland: The final day again dawned with no wind and again the wind filled in from the NE out to sea. Today the conditions were even better than yesterday with the wind filling in slightly stronger and holding for longer. Nearly all racing was conducted in 10-12 maybe 14kn of wind. Late in the day it did move slightly right and start to fade, but by then boats were turning onto their last upwind of the final race.

Three races again were conducted today allowing seven races in total and bringing a discard into play.

The second race of the day (R6) was a return to form for McNay & Payne, but Batchelor & Pascoe were a little deep. Nicholas & Payne were again near the front and this time would make no mistake finishing second. Former champions Mike Holt & Adam Lowry emerged from the forest they had been lost in all regatta to give us a flash of brilliance to pick up third.

And the final race (R7), well it was an exhibition really. McNay & Paine just sailed away from the fleet. It was impressive! In second was the other form boat Batchelor & Pascoe with third going to Mike Martin & Adam Lowry.

Next year the Worlds return to the US West Coast in Santa Cruz and given the size of the US fleet here in Cork, it should be a great success.

Coweslip. Photo by Beken of Cowes. Click on image to enlarge.

Coweslip https://eurosailnews.com/photo-galleries/6-articles/detail/21794-coweslip-photo-by-beken-of-cowes In her heyday she was probably one of the most photographed boats in the world, though good looking as she is, it was her skipper who was the centre of attention. Coweslip, the Flying Fifteen owned by His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was sailed regularly in Cowes Week by The Prince and Uffa Fox.

Coweslip is to return to her original home, Commodores House on the Cowes waterfront, for a few days in August during the Uffa Fox 50 Celebration regatta organised by the Royal London Yacht Club. Coweslip is being lent by Her Majesty The Queen from the Royal Collection. The loan has been arranged with the Classic Boat Museum and the current owner of Commodores House, John Terry, who is making the dock available.

Coweslip is Flying Fifteen number 192, and was a wedding present from the people of Cowes to the then Princess Elizabeth and Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten, RN. The class is one of Uffa’s most enduring and internationally sailed designs, with over 4,000 having been built, and new boats being launched every year.

Coweslip was first sailed by her royal owner in the Grand Harbour, Malta, following her delivery there in December 1949 on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier HMS Glory. Prince Philip was stationed with the Royal Navy at Malta between 1949 and 1951. Coweslip subsequently sailed regularly in Cowes Week from 1951.

She was also used frequently when both Prince Charles and Princess Anne were growing up and learning to sail, during holidays in Scotland as well as in the Solent. With her bulb keel being simple to detach, at 20 ft. Coweslip was just small enough to be transported on the roof of Uffa’s big Packard car, and Uffa took her to several regattas around the coast to race her successfully on The Prince’s behalf. -- John Roberson

Historic Ketch Sandefjord
Dreamship from a different world - the world-girdling Colin Archer Ketch Sandefjord in Dun Laoghaire Marina this week. Photo by W M Nixon. Click on for the article's many photos.

Sandefjord There’s a small but sure glow of stardust in Dun Laoghaire Marina at the moment. Rugged stardust perhaps, but unmistakably genuine stardust nevertheless. The Norwegian gaff ketch Sandefjord, the quintessential Colin Archer-created rescue vessel of 1913 vintage which added ocean voyaging and global circumnavigation to her extraordinary life-path after she’d been retired from at-sea support and life-saving work for the national fishing fleet in 1935, is in port primarily to visit a legendary Dublin Bay seafarer who was on her crew when she sailed round the world in 1965-66.

Sandefjord is 15 metres (49ft) hull length and all boat, as her beam of 5 metres gives an unusually hefty 1/3 ratio. Her gaff rig is squat but powerful, while the scantlings of her hull construction are massive. Officially numbered R28 when built at Risor, she was the 28th redningsskoyte constructed for the Norwegian Lifeboat Society to Archer’s designs, and in 22 years of service was credited with saving 117 lives and guiding 258 vessels to safety, while also providing medical assistance as she was a miniature hospital ship.

Colin Archer (1832-1921), the Norwegian naval architect and shipwright of Scottish descent, was widely renowned for his successful yachts of which our own Asgard (1905) is now the best-known. But his sailing lifeboats had such a special cachet that even before they were replaced by powered craft in the 1930s, many clients had commissioned cruising yachts based directly on the classic rescue boat hull.

Paper charts to be withdrawn
The UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) is preparing to stop paper chart production by late 2026 to instead increase its focus on digital navigation products and services.

The organisation says its plans to withdraw Admiralty Standard Nautical Charts (SNCs) and Thematic Charts are in response to more marine, naval and leisure users primarily using digital products and services for navigation.

The Admiralty Maritime Data Solutions digital navigation portfolio can be updated in near real-time, which the organisation says will enhance safety of life at sea (SOLAS).

The phased withdrawal of paper charts from production will take place over a number of years and is anticipated to conclude in late 2026.

In parallel, the UKHO will develop ‘viable, official digital alternatives’ for sectors still using paper chart products.
