Charlie Cumbley lifts 2022 OK Dinghy World title in Marstrand after windless final day
Charlie Cumbley from Britain has won the 2022 OK Dinghy World Championship after a stressful final day in Marstrand, Sweden. Niklas Edler from Sweden takes the silver with Lars Johan Brodtkorb from Norway wins the bronze. No more races were possible on the final day with a very light wind all day

The last day was always going to be the hardest, with the first onshore AP of the week. The forecast was for very light winds and in the early morning there was less than five knots. The fleet was released shortly after midday with a light wind in place and under hot sunny skies. However soon after that the breeze dropped and all further racing was abandoned shortly before the 15.00 time limit.

It has been a great championship, fantastically hosted by the Marstrands Segelsällskap with eight great races, fantastic weather, hospitality and race management. Originally planned for 2020, it was a long wait for this event, fifty years after it was last held in Marstrand. Perhaps a return won't take so long.

Top 10 Final results
1. Charlie Cumbley, GBR, 22
2. Niklas Edler, SWE, 22.4
3. Lars Johan Brodtkorb, NOR, 29
4. Jens Eckardt, DEN, 39
5. Thomas Hansson-Mild, SWE, 45
6. Jonas Qvist, SWE, 59
7. Mats Caap, SWE, 62

Royal Thames J/80s
Royal Thames J/80s RTYC are in process of replacing their fleet of 9 matched J/80s with a new fleet of 12 Sonars.

The J/80s are matched and well maintained as a fleet but are not in class as they are primarily used for team/match racing and therefore adapted with furling jibs and symmetric spinnakers.

They each have 4 wheel road trailers and an extensive inventory of sails – North mains, jibs and symmetric spinnakers. As they have been used for top level events the sails have been graded Gold, Silver and Bronze and there is a full set of each with Gold being in first class condition used only a few times a year.

There is also an extensive inventory of spares ranging from a brand new rudder and tiller, spare winches, masts and furlers etc etc.

The fleet is available immediately for sale and expressions of interest are invited either for the whole fleet or a lesser set of boats.

Golden Globe Race 2022 fleet sets sail
Gijon, Spain: It was a beautiful day in Gijon, and an emotional send-off from local sailors and boats who came in great numbers to wave goodbye to the 15 Golden Globe Race yachts after a week of briefings and festivities. Yannick Moreau, mayor of Les Sables d'Olonne, Ana Gonzalez, mayor of Gijon, Enrique Fernandez Consejero de Industria, Empleo y Promocion Economica also went out on the water, accompanying the sailors out of Asturian waters into the Bay of Biscay.

The fifteen boats of the GGR are for the first time sailing as a fleet and measuring up to each other for this 240-mile friendly race towards les Sables d'Olonne in a nice westerly breeze, under the sun. The SITraN Challenge has no racing rules and allows boats to be sailed solo or fully crewed, with friends and family, spending quality time together before the build-up of the village leading up to the start in three weeks.

It also allows the organizers to check and validate critical safety and communication systems on this offshore voyage, including the Yellow Brick tracking and 2-way satellite communications systems, before they set off around the world. All this before final safety briefings and safety checks in Les Sables d'Olonne when entrants receive the much anticipated "Green Card" that finally lets them start!

The Fast Lines Half Ton Classics Cup
With exactly twenty announced - and the rumors of even more unannounced - participants in this event, there are many other reasons to look forward to next weekend in Cowes, Isle of Wight.

The fleet consists of 7 British, 4 Belgian, 5 Irish, 2 French, 1 Finnish and 1 Norwegian team.

The Half Ton Class is very happy to be back in Cowes, courtesy of the Royal Ocean Racing Club. The regatta program is finalized, with fine races that - perfectly according to the Half Ton Class spirit - will be very varied: for now there are seven windward - leeward races, four round the cans and one round the island race on the program.

The big unknown factor of course remains how much time one has been able to spend during the many lockdowns pimping the boat during many, many hours of hard work.

For Top Team Racers, Newport in August is a Mandatory Pilgrimage
The most respected events [in Team Racing] are held annually in the same location: the Wilson Trophy on England's West Kirby Marine Lake, the Baldwin Cup in California's Newport Harbor and the trio of team races hosted out of the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court in Newport, R.I., each August: the Morgan Cup (August 12 to 14), the Hinman Trophy (August 19 to 21) and the Grandmasters Team Race (August 26 to 28). While this arrangement provides the respective host clubs with a home-court advantage in each event, for the moment competitor satisfaction far outweighs any worry regarding a slight tilt to the playing field.

The New York Yacht Club helped usher in a new era of adult team racing with the creation of the New York Yacht Club Invitational Team Race Regatta for the Commodore George R. Hinman Masters Trophy in 2000. That race, which requires skippers to be at least 45 years of age and crew to be over 40, was soon followed by the New York Yacht Club Invitational Team Race Regatta for the Morgan Cup, an all-ages event, in 2003 and, in 2010, the New York Yacht Club Grandmasters Team Race Regatta, which mandates skippers be at least 60 years of age and crew at least 50. The three team races are traditionally held over consecutive weekends in August at the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court, using the Club's fleet of 22 Sonar keelboats, and annually attract some of the best adult team racers in the United States and Europe. New York Yacht Club Regatta Association sponsors for 2022 are Helly Hansen, Hammetts Hotel and Safe Harbor Marinas. -- Stuart Streuli

Olympian 'home' at Airlie Beach Race Week
Australian Olympian Mara Stransky is among the record numbers taking part in the Whitsunday Sailing Club's 34th Airlie Beach Race Week (ABRW), which started off Airlie Beach in the Whitsunday Islands on Friday.

The 23-year-old competed at the 2020 Tokyo Games, representing in the Laser Radial class, these days known as the ILCA 6 class. She is on track to represent Australia again at the Paris Games after winning Gold at the Olympic classes Kiel Week in late June. However, she has strong Australian competition for the one place allocated per country in each sailing class.

Now the genial sailor is back 'home' between international competitions. Home is her parents Andrew and Carolyn Stransky's 15.6 metre catamaran, Fantasia, on which Stransky has lived and still does when she is in Australia.

Going into Day 3 at Airlie Beach, Fantasia is fourth in Multihull Racing Division 2.

Ross Chisholm, Event Chairman said of the proposed start this morning "I'm hopeful we will have sufficient breeze around the Molles to have good racing today, once we get them away. It's likely we will postpone the proposed 10am start until the breeze has filled in, though."

Airlie Beach Race Week Festival of Sailing is being held from 11 to 18 August. It is supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland and is a feature on the It's Live! in Queensland events calendar. -- Di Pearson/ABRW media

Covid Finally Caught Me...
Covid Test There was no Friday issue because from Wednesday evening on, I was flattened by Covid. Photo at right is my home test result. The T bar at right is the one that confirms a positive. The instructions say to wait a full 15 minutes as sometimes that bar can be faint. Mine turned dark red in under a minute, signifying a very high viral load.

In what's sadly (for my wife and other family members living under this roof) rather typical modern male, dick-swinging, testosterone-poisoned behavior, i immediately compared my test strip to the other resident male primates, loudly boasting that mine was the darkest, baddest-ass test result of all. And emailed it to others for similarly idiotic boasts.

It's the little things in life that make it all worthwhile.

Given that level of immaturity, no reader here should really pay attention to what I'm going to say. But you should... I only got flattened for 3 days. Nearly past it now, just suffering lack of taste save the metallic aftertaste from the antivirals Paxlovid. I've been fully vaxxed and double boosted as soon as I could. I've lost friends and colleagues to Covid. It does not fool around. If you haven't gotten your shots... PLEASE do so now. Hell I'd sprinkle it on my breakfast cereal if they made it available in powdered form. The vaccine quite possibly saved my life (I'm high risk).

All the absurd bullshit you've heard about Covid vaccines being a plot to control or track or, or infest us with alien DNA or reptilian mind control... is just that. Bullshit from mouth-breathing, drooling idiots who should be mocked, scorned and shunned from society. I take morbid smirking pleasure reading that yet another prominent anti-vaxxer has died of Covid. Sorry for this rant, but if I can move even one person from an anti-vax position to getting their shots, well, it's worth it. -- Your Humble Narrator
