Wind seeking in the Celtic Sea
The international fleet in the Sevenstar Round Britain & Ireland Race is now in the Celtic Sea heading for the West Coast of Ireland. Pip Hare's IMOCA Medallia has raced 217 miles in the last 24 hours and is just over 30 miles from passing Bull Rock on the South West tip of Ireland. Rival IMOCA, Oliver Heer Ocean Racing retired from the race at 22:00 on 08 August. Antoine Magre's Palanad 3 leads the Class40 Division but has one eye on Andrea Fornaro's Influence. Nick Martin's Sun Fast 3600 Diablo continues to impress in IRC Two-Handed, plus updates from double-handed warriors Marco Polo and Snifix Dry reveal how yesterday's strategy played out, and life on board some of the more adventurous entries.

IMOCA Medallia alone as rival retires
Pip Hare's IMOCA Medallia is 40 miles ahead of Ross Hobson's Open 50 Pegasus of Northumberland. Medallia surfed past the Isles of Scilly at 16 knots at around midday yesterday but high pressure has now slowed progress. The centre of the high is right over Bull Rock which they must leave to starboard. Medallia is to the south west of Ireland looking to get round the high to reach the low pressure system to the north.

Unfortunate news came in last night from Oliver Heer Ocean Racing: "IMOCA Oliver Heer Ocean Racing has had to make the tough decision to retire from the round Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race after a medical incident on board. All crew and boat are safe and heading back to base," commented Ollie Heer to the RORC Race Team.

Changing gears in the Class40s
Antoine Magre on board leading Class 40 Palanad 3 contacted the media team via satellite phone from the middle of the Celtic Sea at 0800 BST. "It has been a good start for us. We managed to stick with the Class40s that are built for lighter weather. We took off during the first night which was good, but yesterday was difficult when we were stuck in the light wind for a few hours. However, the wind came back and we were on our way and through the second night progress was great. Now, we are in the middle of the Celtic Sea, once again stuck in very light winds! We are still going but at only about three knots. This is difficult especially as we have just had position reports of a group of Class40s to the north (Kite, Influence & Mussulo 40). It is tricky to navigate but let's see how it goes. We are hoping to get to the corner of Ireland in 15-20 hours."

IRC Two-Handed
Nick Martin's Sun Fast 3600 Diablo, racing with Cal Finlayson continues to lead the ranking for the double-handed class. At 1000 BST on Day 3 Diablo was estimated to be 83 minutes ahead after IRC time correction from Sam White & Sam North racing JPK 1080 Mzungu! Ranked third is Rob Craigie racing Sun Fast 3600 Bellino with Deb Fish. One of the big rises in ranking is Shirley Robertson & Dee Caffari racing Sun Fast 3300 Rockit, which has raced 159 miles in the last 24 hours. Of the leading pack of double-handers only Diablo has raced more and then just by one mile. Rockit is the furthest north of the pack.

Early leaders emerge in the 2022 ORCi European Championship
Hanko, Norway: With the results now available from the Mills Long Offshore Race that started yesterday and concluded today, we have three leaders in each class competing at this week's 2022 ORCi European Championship. This event is hosted by the Royal Norwegian Yacht Club (KNS) and co-organized by the Offshore Racing Congress (ORC).

The race was an appropriate challenge of navigation, strategy and tactics for all 58 teams in the event, featuring variations in wind strength and direction, current factors in some areas of the race course, and choices in sail selections not generally found in inshore windward/leeward race formats. This race was important for all teams because scores earned today cannot be discarded in the final results.

Il Salone Nautico 2022
Genoa International Boat Show The Genoa International Boat Show is an unmissable event both for the international nautical market and for sea enthusiasts and is a global platform for institutional, technical and market comparison for the whole sector 365 days a year.

The Genoa Boat Show is a strategic sector for the economy of the country, ambassador of Made in Italy in the world. The event is synonymous with excellence and prestige with a positioning that guarantees a unique stage and ensures the involvement, in presence and online, of an international audience oriented and strongly interested in high-end products and services.

Debuts at the show:
* Elan's Impression 43 is the brand new model to be presented by Adria Ship at this year's 62nd Genoa International Boat Show.

The second model from the Impression line which also counts the 50.1, the Impression 43 offers a completely new design with an unintrusive deckhouse and large open spaces for living on deck and enjoying a truly comfortable cruise.

At 12.82 metres long (13.60 metres with the dolphin striker) and 4.25 metres wide (sail area of just over 80 square meters), the Impression 43 is built entirely, hull and deck, using an infusion technique. The cockpit can sit up to seated people and the wide passage between the two wheelhouses allows easy access to the aft terrace.

The oak interiors can be organised with three or four cabins, always with two bathrooms and with the large central living room with a kitchen on the left, next to the mast. The auxiliary engine is a 45 Hp Yanmar with an optional 57 or 80 Hp Yanmar.

* A full roster of hallmark names from the yachting industry have come together to bring the new flagship of the Grand Soleil fleet to life: the new model is the Grand Soleil 72, which Cantiere del Pardo plans to unveil at the 62nd Genoa International Boat Show.

And those names are Franco Corazza, Matteo Polli, Nauta Design and Marco Lostuzzi, all key contributors when it comes to creating a true expression of the Made in Italy brand that combines modern lines with tailored ergonomics ensuring the highest standards of comfort.

The deck, visible only in its low and long deckhouse with the windows that, together with those on the hull, bathe the interiors in natural light, the large guest cockpit and the large free deck aft of the wheelhouses, these are all characterising elements of the exterior design of this 23-long sloop, 75 metres long and 6.20 metres wide (displacement 31 tons) with a sail area of 320 square meters.

Golden Globe 2022 entrants meet for the first time in Gijon, Spain
The City of Gijon, the Gijon Tourism Office, the Real Astur Club de Regatas and the Puerto Deportivo de Gijon have been instrumental in making the skippers experience the legendary hospitality, maritime history and gastronomic tradition of the Asturian capital. Skippers have an occasion to gather with friends and family, sometimes flying from afar, to enjoy the summer festival of Semana Grande, a staple in the city's cultural program, and visit the city and the surrounding areas of Asturias.

"I have been here three times for the Figaro class and it is always a pleasure to return to Gijon," said Damien. "It is also a great opportunity for the competitors to get to know the Bay of Biscay during the Prologue, as our circumnavigation will start and finish in this maritime area."

All have received a warm welcome at the Real Club Astur de Regatas by the club's President Alfredo Alegría Díaz, Commodore Guillermo Marqués Prendes, and many enthusiastic sailors from Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country who coincided at the Club for the prize giving ceremony of the Regata de Aproches, who have been offering help and local knowledge to the participants throughout the weekend.

The week will continue with entrants finishing their boat preparation, attending safety briefings, video training for race media content and planned documentary, and the SITraN Challenge back to Les Sables d'Olonne for the opening of the Race Village on August 20th.

Damien Seguin, patron of the 53rd edition of La Solitaire du Figaro
Damien Seguin will be the patron of the 53rd edition of La Solitaire du Figaro. The French three-time Paralympic Games medalist, winner of two gold and once silver who is a five-time world champion became the first disabled sports skipper to complete the Vendée Globe when he finished the 2020-2021 edition in seventh place. Seguin, who is preparing for his second tilt at the Vendée Globe with an IMOCA which is new to him, the race winning former Maitre Coq IV, says he is incredibly proud to be chosen to be patron of the 2022 La Solitaire du Figaro.

Born without a left hand in 1979, Damien Seguin was brought up in Briancon in the Alps but spent a large part of his youth in Guadeloupe. It was at the finish of the 1990 Route du Rhum that gave him the desire to go sailing and especially to cross the oceans alone.

Preparing for his fourth Route du Rhum his second in the IMOCA after a first two in Class40, the founder of the association Des pieds et des Mains, between his training sessions in August and September with his Groupe Apicil will visit the stopovers and the finish in Saint Nazaire. He says:

" In 2006 I said that I would return to this race one day, and the promise still holds! "

Topper World Championship
170 International Toppers from across Europe, Asia and North America gathered at Fraglia Vela Riva, at the northern tip of Lake Garda for the 27th edition of the Topper World Championships. The entry would have been even greater if the 50-strong team from China had been able to travel, proving the enduring popularity of the Ian Proctor design. With many recent Olympians first making their name at the Topper Worlds, the championships are always an intriguing insight into the young talent developing in this gender equal single hander.

Making a welcome return at the 2022 World Championships was the 4 strong team from Vikings Sailing Club of Malta. The very active and enthusiastic club led by Commodore Sandra Agius has introduced many local youngsters to sailing through their club Topper training programme and after a qualification series the top four sailors; Toby Piasecki, Daniel Agius, Andrea Vella and Gary Mercieca, were selected to travel to Riva del Garda for the Topper Worlds, led by coach Mathew Micallef.

Also making a long journey to Garda was Michaela Capolicchio from the Royal St Lawrence YC in Quebec, Canada. The 21-year-old Canadian sailor had never sailed a Topper before, but her coach had attended the 2019 championships in Medemblik and recommended the experience to Michaela, who as a petite sailor found the ILCA 5 dinghy she raced at home too heavy and hardwork to race successfully.

Points were all extremely tight within the top 10, with just 16 points separating the first to tenth – underlining the high level of competition in the International Topper Class.

International Topper 4.2 World Championships

International Topper 5.3 World Championships

The 23rd Match Race Germany celebrates its comeback over Whitsun 2023!
The 23rd edition of the leading German match race classic had to be postponed once again: Match Race Germany sails back to its regular date over Whitsun. The next festival under sail will take place off Langenargen from 24 to 29 May 2023. The extreme low water level in Lake Constance and existing planning uncertainties for the autumn have left the organizers from Match Center Germany no choice but to relocate their crowd puller once again.

"We are a sailing festival that lives for the audience and with the fans. With an uncertain pandemic outlook and conditions for the autumn and without enough water in Lake Constance, we cannot deliver the show that Match Race Germany is all about and that our audience and our partners deserve," says event director Harald Thierer, explaining the difficult step.

Currently, the threateningly low water level in Lake Constance is approaching its historic low mark. Little snow and the early melting in winter, plus great heat and far too little rain this summer have contributed to the tense situation. The level is less than 20 centimeters away from its historic low. With no prospect of heavy rainfall in the near future, Lake Constance in the border triangle between Germany, Austria and Switzerland is losing another four centimetres a day. Many harbours in the region have already dried up completely, others are no longer accessible due to lack of water depth. There is also a mood of alarm in the home port of the Match Race Germany: ships with a draught of more than 1.20 metres can already no longer call at Langenargen's Gondola Harbour.

The World Match Racing Tour, under whose umbrella Match Race Germany is one of the oldest and most prestigious events, has been forced to miss out on the German classic once again in its comeback season after a series of Corona-related cancellations last year.

METSTRADE is to introduce a 'Superyacht Sustainability Route' at this year's event, in collaboration with the Water Revolution Foundation, a non-profit public benefit organisation founded to drive sustainability through collaboration and innovation.

Focused on the superyacht industry, the initiative is designed to raise the profile of exhibitors on the METSTRADE 2022 show floor who have passed the Foundation's rigorous Life Cycle Assessment.

The Water Revolution Foundation, based in the Netherlands, grew out of a small group of superyacht industry leaders who shared a belief that the marine industry must change course to better look after the planet and guarantee its future. The Foundation was launched at The Superyacht Forum in 2018, held next door to METSTRADE in RAI Amsterdam.

One of the Foundation's key activities is the creation of a Database of Sustainable Solutions, to be launched later this year. Anyone seeking a listing in this online database submits to a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), conducted by the Foundation. If the submission is assessed as sustainable from cradle to grave and supports identified UN Sustainability Development Goals, then it can be validated.
