Cowes Week Day Five

Cowes Week Lighter winds this morning increased to give competitors another great day on the water, predominately in breezes of 10-18 knots.

In the HP30 class Alain Waha's Far East 28R Gowest-Cogital is defending the Musto Young Skipper's Trophy he won last year. Today he judged the approach to the downwind, down tide start very nicely, as did Jerry Hill's Farr 280 Moral Compass, with both boats starting closest to the line and first in the fleet to hoist spinnakers.

Sture Wickman's Swedish McConaghy 31 Vitres was also nicely placed as the leaders passed inshore of the HMS Severn, which is on station as Cowes Week guard ship for the rest of the week. By the finish, another Farr 280, Chris Townsend and Richard Powell's Gweilo, had risen to the fore, taking line honours and winning on corrected time by a margin of 96 seconds. Moral Compass took second and Vitres third, pushing Gowest-Cogital down into fourth place.

As a result, Waha lost his second place overall in the standings for the Musto Young Skipper's Trophy, falling to fourth, but only 0.4 points behind Charlie, Tom and Harry White's Squib Kestrel. The Rouse-Allen family's Contessa 32 Andaxi now tops the rankings for this prize with a commanding lead, with two races to go, while a fourth place today for Carl Hentges' Oceanis 38.1 Veritas in Club Cruiser White class, lifted him to second place.

Among the big boats at the Regatta, Ian Atkins' Dark n Stormy picked up one of the sailing world's most prestigious trophies, the Britannia Cup, which was first awarded to King George Vl in 1950. Atkins, who is sailing in his 33rd Cowes Week, stormed around the 25 mile course to take line honours three minutes ahead of another GP42, Guy Gillon and Christian Hamilton's Khumbu, with both boats saving their time on the lower rating boats in the fleet.

Copa del Rey MAPFRE Moves Into The Finals Stage
Photo by Max Ranchi, www.maxranchi.com. Click on image for photo gallery.

Copa del Rey As the 40th Copa del Rey MAPFRE passes from the Preliminary Series which finished today to the three day Finals there are winners and losers as the points scores carried forwards are those of the Preliminary finishing position.

In the highly competitive ClubSwan 50 division which has 14 boats competing there are just three points separating the top four boats but 12 points between fourth placed Hatari - the double world champions who had to relinquish a big points lead this time last year - and fifth placed Regina.

Hendrik Brandis' Earlybird - last year's winner - holds the overall lead after a 2,5 today. The German flagged boat has Aussie double Olympic medallist Will Ryan calling tactics at his first Copa del Rey MAPFRE. Pablo Garriga's second placed Tenaz is a lone Spanish boat in a top seven composed otherwise of German, Swiss and Swedish teams.

Santander native Antonio 'Talpi' Piris is one of Spain's most talented allrounders and is calling tactics on Tenaz for the Barcelona owner and a crew which includes Pablo Santurde, a J/80 world champion also from Santander, Italian America's Cup winning trimmer Lorenzo Mazza and Spanish navigator Alicia Ageno.

Italy's ClubSwan 42 leaders Koyre-Spirit of Nerina have leading tactician Flavio Favini calling tactics. He has huge experience on the Bay of Palma, recalling that his first Copa del Rey was in 1990 on the Italian two tonner Mandrake.

Italy lead the ClubSwan 36 class too as Farstar went 1, 2 today.

In BMW ORC Class 1 the three DK46s continue to dominate led by HM Hospitales which had a 2,3 today. But the format may yet work in the favour of the German youngsters on Carl-Peter Forster's TP52 Red Bandit which took a first and second today and have amassed only 10 points over the five races since being disqualified from Race 1 following a protest.

Sambo Social at Cowes Week
Click on image for photo gallery.

Sambo Social Sam Richmond loved Cowes Week and over 300 family, friends and sailors gathered on the Tuesday of Cowes Week, to celebrate in true Sambo style. The Royal Ocean Racing Clubhouse flung open its doors for the event and Mount Gay Rum provided the spirit for a great evening.

Colette Richmond was joined by Freddie Carr and RORC Commodore James Neville to toast the main man. All of the door fees and donations went to the Scaramouche Sailing Trust. A project that Sam was a huge fan of and contributor.

The evening was all about celebrating the man and in total raised £5000 for the Scaramouche Sailing Trust.

The Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race
The Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race starts at midday on Sunday 7th August. Thirty-two teams from around the world will be racing, equalling the record entry for the non-stop version of the tough 1,805nm race. Organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club every four years since 1976, it has been a non-stop unassisted race since 2006. In this modern version of the race, 78 teams have achieved the honour of finishing, 39 have failed.

The 2022 edition features 120 professional and corinthian sailors from 14 different nations, including four female skippers and seven crew under the age of 21. The overall winner will be decided by the best corrected time under the IRC Rating Rule and will be awarded the John Illingworth Trophy. IRC Classes will have individual trophies.

IMOCA Class
Two IMOCAs will be gunning for Line Honours and the Monohull 60ft or less Race Record set by Artemis - Team Endeavour, skippered by Brian Thompson. (2014: 5 days 14:00:54). The outright Monohull Course Record was set by Volvo 70 Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, skippered by Ian Walker (2014: 4 days 13:10:28).

Pip Hare's IMOCA Medallia is the former Bureau Vallée, third in the last Vendée Globe sailed by Louis Burton. As Banque Populaire it won the 2016 race in the hands of Armel Le Cleach. Pip Hare's Medallia will be racing with a stellar crew: Watch leader Paul Larsen with Nick Bubb, and Kevin George. In 2021, Pip Hare became the 8th woman to finish the Vendée Globe, taking just over 90 days.

IRC Two-Handed
Over half the entries will be racing double-handed. A record 17 teams in IRC Two-Handed will challenge for the Rebel Maid Trophy and the overall win. Sailors racing Two-Handed come from Belgium, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Poland and the USA. The largest entry racing double-handed is the Open 50 Pegasus of Northumberland, skippered by Ross Hobson with Jonathan McColl.

Four Sun Fast 3300 will be competing, including Fastrak XII (Nigel Colley & David Bowdler) and Wild Pilgrim (Daniel Jones & Jon Tyrrell). Chilli Pepper will be racing with the father and daughter team of Jim and Ellie Driver.

Foiling into the future - King Marine
King Marine King Marine's latest achievements include building the world's first fully flying maxi monohull for shortrange offshore racing

The most recent America's Cup cycle demonstrated the pros (and cons) of achieving high performance on a large monohull with designs and builds focused on specific course types in a specific location and a well-defined context of competition. Advances in smaller sail and power foiling craft are also becoming interesting and relevant in the marketplace. The cutting-edge technologies needed to achieve the performance targets in these projects require the very best in design and boatbuilding fabrication, and King Marine has recently demonstrated its ability to meet this challenge with its four latest projects being foiling boats.

For example, the recent launch of Roberto Lacorte's Maxi-sized foiling Flying Nikka represents a huge forward step in applying foiling technology to offshore monohull performance. While the Imoca class yachts have demonstrated the application of monohull foiling in the oceanic passage context, until now no boat had been designed and built in this size range to have a wide range of foiling performance in a non-oceanic setting, such as the Mediterranean.

Double-handers targeting 50th Melbourne to Hobart Yacht Race glory
Amid the double-handed entries already received for the 2022 Melbourne to Hobart Yacht Race, there are some serious contenders for the Heemskerk Trophy, awarded to the overall winner of the race each year.

Being the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria's (ORCV) 50th anniversary race, everyone wants to win it and Ryujin's owner, Alex Toomey and his co-skipper, Andrew Hibbert, are no different.

Like their double-handed opponents, they know it's possible because it's already been achieved. The first was Simon Kellett's Bobby Dazzler, winner in 1990 with Chris Pullin.

In 1994, Kellett returned, one of three double-handed entries and took line honours and the Double-Handed Championship on Fast Forward with Ian Rushton.

Toomey is determined to give it a good crack. He owns the proven Sayer 12, Ryujin. He is racing with Andrew Hibbert, with who he won ORCV's Apollo Bay Race in May.

Also lining up as a Double-Handed entry is ORCV Commodore, Grant Dunoon, whose co-skipper is a past ORCV Commodore and Life member, Neville Rose. Stalwarts of the Club, their boat is Dunoon's beautifully appointed Moody 54 Ds, Blue Water Tracks.

The Commodore is under no illusion as to their chances of winning, his yacht is 28 tons, but that is not the point.

"Blue Water Tracks is a cruising boat not a full-on racer. We won't be able to compete on handicap, but it is the perfect boat for double-handed sailing, it's set up nicely.

"I quite enjoy the challenge of short-handed sailing. It's a little bit less stressful than fully crewed. You have to train and get crew up to speed for the boat to perform well. Short-handed presents a series of different challenges, such as sail changes. I enjoy that side of it and the fact Neville is an experienced short-handed sailor." -- Di Pearson/ORCV media

Entries open for the 16th edition of Transat Paprec with the release of the Notice of Race
Entries are now open for the 16th edition of the Transat Paprec - the first ever transatlantic race for mixed male/female double-handed crews, starting on April 30th, 2023.

Plotting a course of nearly 3,900nm between Concarneau in Brittany, France and Saint-Barthelemy in the Caribbean, the Transat Paprec, formerly the Transat Ag2r - la Mondiale, is raced on equal terms on the Figaro Beneteau 3 one-design, placing the emphasise on the skills and teamwork of the skippers.

The landmark move to a mixed male/female format comes as part of a joint commitment to increase the participation and opportunities for female skippers from the organisers OC Sport Pen Duick, Title Partner Paprec and the Figaro class

Established in 1992 when the legendary Michel Desjoyeaux racing with now well-known race director Jacques Caraès took the first victory, the race has been contested every two years since. A postponement of the 2020 edition to 2021 due to Covid meant the race has never missed an edition. The most recent winners are Swiss-skipper Nils Palmieri and France's Julien Villion, who set the standard to beat in 2021 with a new race record of 18d 05h 08min 03s.

The publication of the Notice of Race marks an important milestone for the Transat Paprec with entries now open. Teams who enter before August 30th will benefit from a special early bird entry fee.

Teams will also be supported through a contribution to their return logistics, and accommodation provision in Saint-Barthelemy.

All teams will also benefit from the installation of an onboard Iridium satellite communication system with data costs covered by the organisers, allowing them to communicate on their race and share their stories with followers from around the world. A prize pot of €50,000 which will be shared amongst the top teams is also likely to be a big draw for teams.

The Notice of Race is available to download here.

Skippers interested in taking part should contact Alex Picot, Project Manager at OC Sport on or Marcus Hutchinson, Figaro Beneteau Class representative at

Halfway Point In The Globe40's Longest Leg
The front runners in the GLOBE40 round the world yacht race reached the halfway point in this second leg having covered 3,600 miles since setting sail from Cape Verde on Sunday 17 July, which equates to an average speed of 9.1 knots for the top duos. They now have 3,500 miles left to go until they reach the leg two finish in Port-Louis in Mauritius. The entire distance for this leg is the equivalent of two back-to-back Route du Rhum transatlantic races.

The first week of racing after leaving Mindelo involved a long sprint towards the African coast in search of a SE'ly trade wind, whilst the second section towards the South Atlantic consisted of a seemingly endless beat spanning nearly two weeks, with a brief but lively passage through the doldrums and across the equator. A fairly relaxed section of racetrack ensued with an average of around fifteen knots of breeze and balmy temperatures offshore of Brazil, together with a few little tactical pitfalls dotted along the course. For the past few days, the skippers have launched onto the third phase of this epic leg, having gradually gained some ground to the east to get around the Saint Helena High and make towards South Africa, which is still some 1,500 miles ahead of their bows.

Currently sailing downwind, the pace has accelerated across the fleet and the skippers have had to raise their game as they try to adapt their strategies to what is a complex situation, slinking along in a corridor of breeze between 2 windless zones of high pressure. Inevitably, the duos will be keen to make hay while the sun shines as the door at the end of the corridor may well be closed, leaving them to punch into headwinds with the threat of their first gale under the tip of South Africa.
