40th Copa del Rey MAPFRE opens in perfect conditions

Copa del Rey MAPFRE The Bay of Palma switched on a perfect 14kts sea breeze to open the 40th anniversary edition of the Copa del Rey MAPFRE. And though it built a little there was more than enough going on with small shifts and changes in wind pressure to ensure this first of six days of racing was much more than a one sided Palma speed test.

Defending Copa del Rey champions EarlyBird were over early at the start of the first race and had to restart whilst the double world champions Hatari started only modestly with a sixth and tenth to lie ninth. The format of the regatta, where the finishing position from the preliminary series carries forwards as points into the three day Final, does not punish such openings.

Racing goes on Tuesday with the first start due at 1300hrs and the Herbalife J/70s and Sotheby’s Mallorca Women’s Cup fleet opening their regatta scorings.

Cowes Week Day Three
After a relaxed morning waiting for wind, Cowes Week competitors enjoyed a third successive day of glorious sailing and close racing in ideal conditions. Highlights included the Quarter Ton class, where the top two boats finished in a dead heat, and the XOD fleet in which more than 20 XODs crossed the line overlapped.

The larger Black Group yachts started from a committee boat in the Western Solent at a similar time, however, the smaller IRC classes scheduled to start on a committee boat in the eastern Solent had a longer wait for the new wind, with the Quarter Ton class finally getting away a little after 1500. This is also a small class this year, but the competition could not be more intense. Jullian Metherell’s Bullit and Ian Southworth’s Protis had a dead tie for first place, while most of the fleet finished in under three minutes.

Among them was Cote, sailed by Jaydon Desmond, Christopher Frederick, Kai Hockley and Jessye Opoku-Ware of inner London state school Greig City Academy, whose sailing activities are funded by Cowes Week official charity, the Scaramouche Sailing Trust.

The Sonar class, which is holding its national championship during Cowes Week, was very punchy at the start today. A big bunch of boats at the outer end of the line luffed prematurely, resulting in a general recall. In their second start the fleet generally approached the line more cautiously, but a group of boats were still early and didn’t respond to the individual recall signal.

In the 26-strong Redwing fleet the front-runners timed their start almost to perfection, despite the strong stream sweeping them on course side. However, a couple were marginally too early - Robin Ebsworth’s Quintessence returned to start correctly, but Mike Toogood’s Tara and Bella Janson’s Gannet were eventually scored OCS. Mark Downer and family’s Enigma, along with Serena Gosling’s Gosling, led the pack away from the line, with Andrew and Edward Eddy’s Plover plus James Wilson’s Quail, also looking well placed in the early stages of the first beat.

Bumper entry in prospect for 2024 Women’s and Youth America’s Cup events
The organisers of the 37th America’s Cup are planning for as many as 12 teams to compete in both the Women’s and Youth America’s Cup regattas scheduled to take place in Barcelona, Spain in 2024 in parallel with the main event.

The Youth and Women’s events will both take place using the new AC40 one-design foiling monohull class with the entries split into two pools of six for an initial fleet race series.

The first pool will be made up of entries from the America’s Cup syndicates, leaving the second pool for independent yacht club entries that qualify to enter under the nationality clause of the 37th America’s Cup Protocol.

In both events each six team pool will race a series of six to nine fleet races with the top three teams from each pool progressing to the final series of three to four fleet races to decide the top two teams to compete in a single winner-takes-all match race final.

The AC37 organisers are hoping for the two events to be major highlights of the 37th America’s Cup cycle with both the Women’s and Youth America’s Cup racing planned to take place on the full America’s Cup racecourse off the Barcelona waterfront during the final stages of the Challenger Selection Series and the opening days of America’s Cup Match itself.

The AC organisers are also hoping to attract independent yacht club entries for both the Youth and the Women’s America’s Cups and have made provision to relax the nationality rules for entries from ‘Emerging Nations’ to allow approved non-nationals to be included as part for the sailing team.

The AC organisers say there has already been significant global interest from yacht clubs hoping to be able to field teams in both events. More details of the entry criteria will be made available in due course and the window for expressions of interest from prospective teams will be opened on October 1st, 2022. -- Justin Chisholm

Ard Matthews Signs Up For Cape2Rio Race 2023
Ard Matthews Ard Matthews is one of South Africa’s most prized singers, song writers and award-winning artists. He is a beloved household name and personality. He is also entry no 16 to the Cape2Rio race on his boat The Impossible Machine (TIM) on 2 January 2023.

The Cape2Rio race takes place every three years between the Royal Cape Yacht Club and the Iate Clube do Rio De Janeiro. It’s a daunting but thrilling cross-Atlantic adventure of on average 22 days. Ard Matthews will take part in this 50th celebration of the Cape2Rio race, in a vessel that original took the trip to Rio 50 years ago in the inaugural race.

Matthews launched his debut solo album in 2012 and his second studio album ‘Impossible Machines’ in 2017. It is therefore fitting that the boat that will take him from Cape to Rio, is named after this album.

The Impossible Machine (TIM), formerly known as The Howard Davis, was designed by Kurt Oehlman and built by Louw and Halvorson. It is a classic 66-foot wooden sailing vessel commissioned by the SA Navy in 1966, made of Mahogany on Oroko frames, with a 16-ton lead keel and approximate 200sqm sail area.

Matthews will have a mobile studio on the boat with the aim of continuing his recordings, all while documenting as much as possible for the world to see. We are hoping that this incredible sailing journey of approximately 3300 nautical miles across the Atlantic will spark creative moments for all his fans to enjoy in the near future.
