New Zealand SailGP Team triumphs in first ever SailGP event final
It was a day to remember at the Great Britain Sail Grand Prix in Plymouth for Peter Burling and Blair Tuke's New Zealand SailGP Team, as it first competed against The Duchess of Cambridge on the waters of Plymouth Sound before claiming its first ever event win in SailGP.

In the three-team final match race, New Zealand triumphed over fellow event final debutants, Nicolai Sehested's Denmark and season standing leaders, Tom Slingsby's Australia in challenging conditions on Plymouth Sound.

The Denmark SailGP Team presented by ROCKWOOL warmed up in the best possible way for its home event in just three weeks' time with an impressive day two performance, delivering two second place finishes to secure a place in the three-boat podium final for the first time ever.

Great Britain missed the final – and the chance of winning its first event of the season – in controversial circumstances with a late penalty against Australia meters from the finish line in the day's final fleet race.

The European leg of the championship continues in Copenhagen for the ROCKWOOL Denmark Sail Grand Prix on August 19-20. For tickets, head to SailGP.com/Copenhagen for more information, and for details on how to watch the action in Denmark head to SailGP.com/watch.

40th Copa del Rey MAPFRE
After a weekend of preliminary build up onshore events and today's official practice race, the 40th anniversary edition of the Copa del Rey MAPFRE opens with points racing on the Bay of Palma Monday.

The annual showcase regatta sees nine classes set to line up, four racing on corrected time under ORC handicap, four One Design classes including the ultra competitive ClubSwan 50 which made its debut here in 2017, the ClubSwan 36s, ClubSwan 42s and a J/70 fleet. The Mallorca Sotheby's Women's Cup is raced in J/80s.

This year's event has attracted more than 100 teams racing under the national flags of nearly 20 nations.

Coming just three weeks after the Swan One Design World Championship in Valencia there are scores to settle, raw wounds to salve and rivalries to resume when the three ClubSwan classes start racing Monday.

Among the classes there are six 2021 champions returning to defend their title: Óscar Chaves' DK46 HM Hospitales (2021 champion as Hydra) in BMW ORC 1, Javier Banderas' Swan 42 Teatro Soho Caixabank in BMW ORC 2, Earlybird in ClubSwan 50, G-Spot in ClubSwan 36, Marcelo Baltzer's Let it Be in Herbalife J/70 and Nuria Sánchez's J80 Dorsia Covirán in Mallorca Sotheby's Women's Cup.

Rooted in experience - Dubarry
Dubarry Do anything successfully enough for long enough and every future improvement will come more easily and most importantly with greater confidence

When a piece of clothing becomes as much a statement as a practical solution for outdoor life, as a company you’ve hit the bullseye. Footwear specialist Dubarry is 85 this year and they’ve hit the target on many occasions. But as their marketing director Michael Walsh explains, one product in particular stands out for its continued success, and has helped provide a template for the next chapter for this famous Irish company with the launch of the Dubarry Aquatech collection.

‘The Crosshaven Sailing Boot is our flagship sailing product,’ says Walsh. ‘It has been and continues to be extremely popular with a wide range of sailors who know precisely what they want and what it delivers. And while this is a fantastic situation to be in, the development of the Crosshaven Boot has also helped us significantly in the design and development of other specialist outdoor clothing.’

Cowes Week

Cowes Week Warm weather, combined with winds gusting above 25 knots, provided lashings of excitement, thrills, spills and adrenaline for competitors across all fleets at Cowes Week Sunday. Long downwind legs for many classes ensured competitors came ashore with big grins.

In IRC Class Zero, for instance, Emmy Walker is sailing onboard the GP42 Dark n Stormy, with her father Ian, who is the team's tactician. Similarly, Huw Neville is sailing with his dad James on the HH42 Ino XXX, while Jacintha Hamilton is racing with dad Christian on his GP42 Khumbu.

These big boats had a gruelling 25 mile race, with around 80 tacks along the mainland shore, according to Ian Walker, as well as high-speed downwind blasts at boat speeds that topped 24 knots. Yet the first three boats crossed the finish line just 25 seconds apart. Christian Zugel's Fast 40 Tschuss took victory on corrected time, 10 seconds ahead of Dark n Stormy, with Khumbu third.

At the other end of the spectrum, the 20ft long Uffa Fox designed Flying 15 was born in Cowes 75 years ago. Yet it's still one of the fastest small keelboats at Cowes Week, where competitors are honing their skills ahead of the European Championship, with 65 entries, that will be hosted by Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club later this month. Today, several teams recorded boat speeds in the 14-15 knot range. "It was an exhilarating day," says Rupert Mander of Men Behaving Badly, "especially our first reach, which was a super-quick blast." He also reported a "very confused" sea state each side of South Bramble buoy.

34 solo skippers expected to compete on this summer's 53rd La Solitaire du Figaro The starting gun for the first stage of the 53rd edition of La Solitaire du Figaro will sound on August 21, off Saint-Michel-Chef-Chef in the Loire-Atlantique after the fleet has paraded up the Loire from Nantes.

And this year's edition promises to be every bit as tough and challenging as usual. The three stage course will cover an aggregate 2000 nautical miles (3700kms) with 34 solo skippers set to take on the annual multi stage solo race. The field includes five women and nine rookies.

Since 2019 it has been raced on the Figaro Beneteau 3, a 36ft foil assisted one design which means that the sailors compete on equal terms. It is the yearly pinnacle event on the Figaro circuit as well as the highlight of the French Elite Offshore Racing Championship.

This year's course comprises three long, tough stages all more than 635 miles in length. Starting from Nantes the stages stop in Royan and Port La -Foret before finishing in Saint Nazaire. The focus is very much on the start port of Nantes and the finish into Saint Nazaire, key cities in the Loire-Atlantique region which is a Major Partner of the race, complementing new main partner Paprec.

The Grand Depart takes place in Nantes on the 21st August and the finish, the Grand Final is some three weeks later in Saint Nazaire. Both the start and finish cities will offer popular exhibitions and festivals for visitors to enjoy in the respective race villages.

Stage 1 / Nantes - Port-La-Foret
From Sunday August 21 to Thursday August 25

Stage 2 / Port-La-Foret - Royan
From Sunday August 28 to Thursday September 1

100 days before the start of La Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe
138 competitors are preparing to take on the classic Transatlantic course from Saint Malo to Guadeloupe. 100 days may sound and feel like a long time for those who can't wait to be in Saint Malo to enjoy the buzz and see the giant fleet, but for competitors with seemingly endless job lists this time will pass all too rapidly.

Qualifications: the same rule for everyone!
Since April 5 for most, or April 27 for the 18 beneficiaries of the Wild Card entries, those who will race have been allocated a place subject to a certain number of essential formalities to validate their registration. Whatever the size of the boat or the skipper's track record, the obligations are the same for everyone, starting with qualifying for the event. The Race Direction requires each sailor to complete a 1,200-mile solo course aboard his boat before October 6*. This navigation can be done on a free route, validated by the organization, on the condition that it includes a minimum of 120 miles (10% of the course) upwind in steady wind. But qualification can also be granted by participating and finishing a so-called "qualifying" race. Thus, many sailors have done so by finishing the 1000 miles Les Sables (Ocean Fifty and Class40), the Guyader Bermudes 1000 Race (Imoca), the Vendée Arctic (Imoca) or more recently the Drheam Cup (Ultim 32/23, Ocean Fifty, Imoca, Class40).

And so at 100 days from the start 7 Ultim 32/23, 6 Ocean Fifty, 22 Imoca, 39 Class40, 9 Rhum Multi and 6 Rhum Mono, i.e. 64.5% of the fleet, have now already completed their qualification. For the others this will be the sole focus over the coming weeks Once this essential box is checked and the administrative formalities (measurement certificate, medical file, etc.) have been completed.

Then all that remains is just delivering the boat to Saint-Malo on time for the opening of the village on October 25.

Pleasure Craft Reporting has Changed
The UK Government, via the UK Border Force, has developed a new digital reporting service, known as 'single Pleasure Craft Reporting (sPCR)', which pleasure craft are asked to use as the preferred method when leaving or entering the UK on passage to EU countries, the Channel Islands or the rest of the world.

There has long been a requirement to notify UK Customs of your voyage plan to destinations outside the UK and arrivals into the UK, including travel to/from the EU since the UK left the EU in 2020. From 1 January 2022, this requirement has been actively enforced using the 'Pleasure Craft Report Template' e-C1331 email form and C1331 postal form.

New Online Service
The new online service - www.spcr.homeoffice.gov.uk - which is currently in 'beta' mode will eventually replace its predecessors, the e-C1331 and C1331 forms. For the time being the UK Border Force will accept reporting of a voyage plan online or by completing either the e-C1331 (now renamed 'Pleasure craft on non-UK voyages: leaving or arriving in the UK (pleasure craft report (sPCR) fallback template)') by email, as well as submission by post of the C1331 form, but reporting via the new online service is the preferred option.

"The Cruising Association has been liaising with UK Border Force for a number of years on this project with a view to ensuring that the new system fits the needs of the cruising community," commented Derek Lumb, President of the Cruising Association. "Together with the RYA, British Marine and other marine organisations, CA representatives have attended and been active in discussions at the General Maritime Leisure Sector Liaison Meetings in order to influence a positive outcome for cruisers.

"The change to a new online service delivers a far more accessible and user-friendly experience, making it easy to log new and alter existing passages."
