Bluebottle Dragon The 2022 Edinburgh Cup was won by Provezza Dragon TUR 1212, Andy Beadsworth, Simon Fry and Edward Salter. While not his first Edinburgh Cup win, Andy Beadsworth has achieved his first Edinburgh Cup title as a helm.

There was no fourth win for Graham Bailey, but his team of Julia Bailey and David Heritage sailed an excellent week on Bluebottle showing that the restored, vintage Dragon is still extremely competitive.

After claiming the 2022 BDA Southwest championship title, third place overall and top placed Corinthian Dragon, Martin Byrne’s Jaguar Racing Team were delighted. “We are very happy with how we went and the whole week, we enjoyed ourselves.”

Bluebottle helm, Graham Bailey commented “We are still on a learning curve with Bluebottle, but our averages were good enough through week to put us in contention going into the final day. The start lines had been excellent all week so in the final race we opted for mid-line and put the hammer down. Andy (Beadsworth) split tacks and we each held our nerve as the separation grew, then it was all down to the last shift to see who was ahead. We tried a close cover on the second beat, but this was never going to deliver the points we needed so we changed to “sail the course” mode hoping we could put enough distance on Andy and the fleet for us to survive any volatility which may put Andy at risk.

“Having Provezza in the Edinburgh Cup did wonders for the profile of the event and many teams noticeably raised their game to meet the challenge including several class stalwarts such as Owen Pay who regularly put Furious GBR 777’s bow ahead of us all at the top mark.”

Next year’s event and 75th celebration of the Edinburgh Cup with be in Cowes, August 2023.

The 14th edition of the Seldén SailJuice Winter Series kicks off in just under four months’ time, starting with the Fernhurst Books Draycote Dash on 19 & 20 November 2022.

Seldén is back for the fourth year as title sponsor of the series which since 2009 has aimed to provide the fairest possible handicap racing for small boats in the UK.

Some fleets choose to use some of the events as their class championships, such as the RS Aero which typically brings up to 50 boats for the concluding event of the season, the Oxford Blue, which in recent years has served as the Aero Winter Championships. If you’re interested in choosing one, some or even all of the events in the Series to construct your own class championships, email Simon Lovesey for more details:

Dubarry Do anything successfully enough for long enough and every future improvement will come more easily and most importantly with greater confidence

When a piece of clothing becomes as much a statement as a practical solution for outdoor life, as a company you’ve hit the bullseye. Footwear specialist Dubarry is 85 this year and they’ve hit the target on many occasions. But as their marketing director Michael Walsh explains, one product in particular stands out for its continued success, and has helped provide a template for the next chapter for this famous Irish company with the launch of the Dubarry Aquatech collection.

‘The Crosshaven Sailing Boot is our flagship sailing product,’ says Walsh. ‘It has been and continues to be extremely popular with a wide range of sailors who know precisely what they want and what it delivers. And while this is a fantastic situation to be in, the development of the Crosshaven Boot has also helped us significantly in the design and development of other specialist outdoor clothing.’

This month's nominees:

British Dragon Edinburgh Cup 2022 Falmouth Merritt Sellers (USA)
St Francis Yacht Club rocks. Especially their youngsters, including Merritt Sellers who won the two-handed division in the Bayview-Mack Race sailing with her dad Scot. 'We got 'em at night,' said dad. 'We went from 2nm back to 2nm in front.' What had to be squeezed out of the pair was that Merritt was on the helm most of the race and all of the night. 'I'm at a point as a sailor where I'm able to do this,' said the 14-year-old. 'Everything was pretty mellow… it feels pretty cool'

British Dragon Edinburgh Cup 2022 Falmouth Ioannis Maragkoudakis (GRE)
The creator of the Aegean 600 has a lot to be proud of, launching a new 600-miler last year. The race was an instant hit and he quickly switched plans from a biennial event to a race every year. Now for 2023 a record entry of grand prix designs is already lining up as the word spreads. Line-honours winner Henri de Bokay read about last year's race in Seahorse… then headed out and bought his friend Tilmar Hansen's Outsider. Very smart

A Hell of a Start to Summer! - OnCourse Ep20
After two years of uncertainty there is no doubt that this year the sailing season is well underway. It’s been a very busy and exciting summer so far with a huge range of events filling the calendar to bursting point. And what a variety we've had already.

From a race into unknown territory for the IMOCA 60s, to the launch of a radical new design for one of the biggest offshore rockstars in the scene. Plus, we've seen the ProSailing Tour demonstrate why it could be the next hottest thing offshore.

There have been world championships aplenty too, the TP52s in Portugal, the 6metres in Switzerland and three impressive ClubSwan fleets in Spain to name just a few.

We talk to PlanetSail regular and round the world multiple record holder Dee Caffari about her path to the big event of her season with her sailing partner, double Olympic Gold medalist Shirley Robertson about their path to the Round Britain and Ireland Race.

And then we take a look at an innovative and inspirational project that strikes at the heart of both leading edge foiling and the quest to show the way towards a greener future for our sport.

All this crammed into an episode that is exploding at the seams.......It's been a hell of a start to summer!

Little change in final OK Dinghy World Ranking ahead of 2022 World Championship
The final OK Dinghy World Ranking list ahead of next week’s World Championship in Marstrand, Sweden, has changed little since the previous release, with Thomas Hansson-Mild, from Sweden going into the first world championship since 2019 as the World No 1.

Fellow Swede, Fredrik Loof and Poland’s Tomazs Gaz, are still second and third but both will be absent in Marstrand.

The two events included in this release are the British Nationals at Herne Bay and Warnemunde Woche, in Germany.

Russ Clark won a very close British championship from Paul Childs, with Swede, Patric Mure in third. In Warnemunde, the series was significantly shortened due to extreme weather with Ulli Kurfeld, from Germany, taking the win from Denmark's, Bo Petersen, and Sweden’s Benjamin Hammero.

The Swedes have been waiting for a home worlds for two years after the 2020 championship in Marstrand had to be cancelled due to the pandemic, but with 115 entries this year, and a lot of new faces entered, it will be a fascinating title chase.

Also, with maximum ranking list points on offer at the worlds, and only a small number of sailors making the trip from down under, there are sure to be some major changes to the ranking list in the near future.

WHAT Cantiere doors open for an exclusive look behind the scenes: work continues on the construction of the first Grand Soleil 72. Through Alberto Cocchi’s shots, we can observe the craftsmen of Cantiere del Pardo working hard to complete the very latest project by Grand Soleil Yachts. The new flagship of the Grand Soleil fleet will be launched in few weeks ahead of its world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2022.

The 72-footer will be the result of a totally Made in Italy design process, with a team of professionals representing Italian excellence in the international nautical industry. The creation of the new yacht is being overseen by project manager Franco Corazza, while designer Matteo Polli took care of naval architecture. Marco Lostuzzi also contributed to the realization of this project, focusing on the structures, and Nauta Design, for the general layout and design of the deck and interiors. The team was guided by the goal of creating a boat with an avowedly Italian aesthetic, elegant and modern design, and high comfort ergonomics both on deck and inside.

Crosshaven Boatyard, Irish distributors for Dufour Yachts, have shared their excitement at the upcoming debut of the Dufour 37.

As previously noted on Afloat.ie, this unique, high-performance and spacious sailing boat will be on display afloat for her world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival from 6-11 September.

Dufour 37

“The new Dufour 37 is a stunning looking yacht,” Crosshaven Boatyard’s Hugh Mockler tells Afloat.ie. “She comes with a number of new features that will appeal to a variety of sailors.

“Her standard keel has a draft of 1.90m with the option of a deeper keel for more performance. There is excellent flexibility in relation to how the boat is set up for any potential owner.

“Speed and comfort are very much to the fore with the Dufour 37,” Mockler adds. “Her forward cabin is amazing for this size boat with her double berth easily accessible from either side. She will certainly fit the needs of the Irish sailor whether it be for racing or cruising.

“This model along with a number of the Dufour models are nearly sold out already for the 2023 season.”

Building work has already begun on the first unit of the wallywind110, scheduled to be launched in May 2024. She will sport a full carbon hull drawing on the world-class quality of Wally’s expert laminators, who have always been at the forefront of exploiting this sophisticated technology. Just as importantly, she features Wally’s simplified sail handling system, which has proven itself over time and is now widely adopted by the whole industry.

wallywind110

The project once again unites Wally know-how with naval architecture by judel/vrolijk & co, the studio that has signed some of the fastest sloops on the water today. The fruit of this collaboration is a boat whose lines display Wally’s characteristic simplicity and elegance, while offering beguiling pace and stability.

Besides the full carbon lay-up, there is a high-performance carbon rig and the choice of three keel types: a fixed 4.5m keel, a 3.95-6.10 m telescopic keel or a high-tech 4.50-6.80 m lifting keel. Not for nothing does this boat have an impressive 40% ballast to weight ratio.

Other technical highlights include the use of lightweight lithium-ion batteries and auxiliary equipment, multiple high-pressure hydraulic pumps for maximum redundancy, and a low-profile twin rudder set-up. Naturally, the wallywind110 also features Wally’s underwater anchoring system, and famous Magic Trim hydraulic system for the main and jib sheets.

German shipyard YYachts once again presents an exciting line-up at the Cannes Yachting Festival (6 - 11 September). The Y9, a 27.40-meter world premiere, will moor at Port Canto. The shipyard’s new flagship is a Bill Tripp design while the interior was developed by Norm Architects in cooparation with Design Unlimited and YYachts` in-house design team. YYachts Y9

With a length of 27.40 m, the Y9 presents the same volume of a 100ft yacht with a private owners’ apartment to offer maximum privacy, comfortable guest cabins and a large and flexible crew area.

With an exterior design and naval architecture form Bill Tripp the Y9 is built completely from carbon fibre optimizing performance and making her extremely competitive. nerator at night.

The interior of the Y9 was jointly developed by two design studios. Norm Architects from Copenhagen and Design Unlimited from Lymington combined their architectural and yachting experience and created a Scandinavian elegant look for the Y9 that follows the principle of "soft minimalism". The owner has chosen smoked oak which conveys perfectly the feeling of Copenhagen design.

The Aura 51 marks a new stage in the evolution of the Fountaine Pajot Sailing Catamarans range and the desire of the shipyard in La Rochelle to go further in its environmental approach.

A new Deck design that’s easier to move around

Aura 51

The deck layout of the Aura 51, which has been completely redesigned, marks a new era for the Fountaine Pajot range and provides even more space and comfort. A great new feature for this 51-foot cruising catamaran is its complete opening between the saloon and the cockpit. An innovation that facilitates communication between the galley and the large cockpit table, and which will offer you an even greater feeling of freedom and space, characteristic of the Fountaine Pajot range.

Renewable energy with large capacity

The Fountaine Pajot design office, in collaboration with the Olivier Racoupeau Design team of naval architects, imagined the Aura 51 to be able to accommodate a large surface area of solar panels without compromising on design.

Its large flybridge, with its friendly lounge and sunbathing area, is fitted with solar panels that are totally flush-decked, integrating with the lines, capable of producing 2000 Watts of renewable energy. A successful gamble that allows the Aura 51 to generate 5 times more solar energy than other yachts equipped with solar panels.

Space and a multitude of layouts including a 6-cabin/6-bathroom version

To suit the greatest number of people, the Aura 51 adapts to your desires and your cruising needs, available in 4 different layouts. Each cabin has its own bathroom area, including the 6-cabin version - a first on the catamaran market for a 51-foot model, as is the double Maestro version, another yard exclusive. The Full Maestro version offers a huge owner’s cabin in the entire port hull.
