J/24 World Championship Corpus Christi, Texas USA: Mike Marshall's American Garage may have never been in first place overall during races one through nine, but he was after the tenth and final race to claim the title of 2022 J/24 World Champion. With crew Dave Hughes, Allan Terhune, Jeffrey Hayden and Rod Favela, the Newport, Rhode Island-based skipper overcame a Black Flag in Race 7 to finish with 29 net points.

Paul Foerster's Grand Slam 2 compiled a stellar week of racing, but a 10 in the last race became their discard, and they finished a mere point behind Marshall for second place. Nobuyuki Imai's Siesta always impresses, and this Championship was no different as they placed third with 32 points. John Mollicone's New England Ropes was in the hunt all week and ended just a notch behind Siesta for fourth place. Foerster's Grand Slam 2 won the strong 27-boat Corinthian division, ahead of Imai's Siesta and James Freedman's LOL. This year is the inaugural presentation of the Corinthian perpetual trophy, generously donated by long-time J/24 sailor Jim Farmer.

1. American Garage, Mike Marshall, 29
2. Grand Slam 2, Paul Foerster, 30
3. Siesta, Nobuyuki Imai, 32

Balboa Yacht Club Governor's Cup
Photo by Longpré Photos. Click on image to enlarge.

Governor's Cup Newport Beach, CA Defending "GovCup" champ and newly crowned Youth Match Racing World Champion Jeffrey Petersen (USA) of host Balboa Yacht Club remains in the lead. With six wins against no losses on the day for a two-day 12-1 record, four points clear of the next teams.

Marius Westerlind (SWE) was in second with an overall 8-5 score - but no longer alone in second. Two other teams made major gains today: Jordan Stevenson (NZL) and Jack Egan (USA), the latter of whom was undefeated on the day. Westerlind, Stevenson, and Egan are all tied for second with eight wins.

Members of the Governor's Cup Selection Committee had predicted that this would be the most evenly matched group of sailors in recent GovCup history. While there were signs of that yesterday, today it became quite clear: 2nd through 10th places are now separated by only three points. With nine races still to go in the second round-robin, any of those teams could get through to the semi-finals.

Over 50 Entries For Uffa Fox Event
Uffa Fox Event Cowes, Isle of Wight: The Uffa Fox 50 Celebration in Cowes has already attracted 58 entries, a month before the 18th – 21st August event. With boats ranging from his famous series of Atalanta cruising designs down to the humble Firefly, this promises to be a feast of nostalgia and some great sailing.

While the most numerous entry is from the Flying Fifteen class, whose European championships are the following week, the oldest boats are to be found amongst the vintage International 14s, with boats dating back to the 1930s. Other classes with entries in already include the Albacore, Firefly, National 12, National 18, National Redwing and a very rare Flying 10.

One of the event originators Mark McNeill said yesterday, "we are thrilled at the number of entries at this early stage and look forward to more people entering in the coming weeks. It has also been fabulous how the Cowes community has got behind this event, that celebrates an important part of their history."

The opening reception for the event will be held at the "Commodore's House", right on the shores of Cowes Harbour, the building where Uffa lived, had his design office and built a few boats. The dinghies taking part will be berthed on Cowes Parade when not sailing, so on view for the public to admire, while there is rumour that a very famous Flying Fifteen may also be on display.

The event was instigated by the Atalanta association, who approached Mark McNeill, Chair of the Classic Boat Museum, Cowes. The event will be hosted by the Royal London Yacht Club, and has pulled in support from a wide selection of Cowes businesses and charitable organisations. They have received sufficient support from the local community that entry is free, Red Funnel ferries are offered half price fares, and those who bring a boat to the Island get a £100 rebate when they register. -- John 'Robo' Roberson

Special 50th edition Rolex Fastnet Race to take place in 2023
A year from now the start gun will fire on what will be the most significant, historic edition of the world's largest offshore yacht race. Setting sail from Cowes on Saturday 22nd July 2023 will be the 50th edition of the Royal Ocean Racing Club's Rolex Fastnet Race. For a second consecutive occasion, this will finish in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin via a 695 nautical mile course via the Fastnet Rock. Because this is a special edition, complete with celebrations taking place on both sides of the Channel prior to the start and at the finish, it is expected to attract a record-sized fleet.

The first race, then simply known as the 'Ocean Race' and held on a course from Ryde to Plymouth via the Fastnet Rock, took place in 1925 with seven starters. A dinner immediately after the finish resulted in the Ocean Racing Club being established with Lt Cmdr EG Martin, owner of the first race's winner, Jolie Brise, appointed Commodore.

Since then, top sailors from all over the world have competed in this most famous of the world's 'classic 600 mile offshore races'. The Rolex Fastnet Race was inspired by the Newport-Bermuda offshore race (first held in 1906) and US entries have remained strong. Notable US winners include yacht designer Rod Stephens Snr with Dorade (1931 and 1933); Dick Nye with Carina II (1955 and 1957); innovative designer Dick Carter with Rabbit (1965) and Red Rooster (1969); CNN founder Ted Turner's Tenacious which won the infamous 1979 race; and, most recently, David and Peter Askew on Wizard (2019).

The race has always attracted a powerful entry from the continent and especially France, with the great Eric Tabarly winning on board Pen Duick III in 1967. As France has come to dominate all walks of offshore racing, so four of the last 10 races have been won by their yachts.

Rolex Middle Sea Race Fleet is Hotting Up
There are three months to the start of the 2022 Rolex Middle Sea Race. Some 61 yachts have entered, with crews from Australia, the United States, Canada and most of Europe slated to participate. The fleet comprises the usual array of professionals, amateurs and adventurers. At the faster end, debutant Frank Slootman's MOD70 Snowflake has been joined by Giovanni Soldini's Maserati Multi 70, on the Italian multihull's fifth appearance.

Among the monohulls, the 30.5 metre Leopard 3 is currently the largest entry, making a welcome return after a five-year absence. Within the main body of IRC entries, the impressive two-time winning Maltese co-skipper combo, Lee Satariano and Christian Ripard, are back hoping for a three-peat, with Satariano's latest Artie.

The cut-off date for entry is officially Friday, 23 September 2022, but the Royal Malta Yacht Club (RMYC), has retained the discretion to accept late entries up to Friday, 30 September. The race itself starts from Grand Harbour, Valletta, on Saturday, 22 October.

One entry to catch the eye is Maverick. The Infiniti 46R has been campaigned around the 606 nautical mile course with great success on two previous occasions by Quentin Stewart, winning class both times and finishing third overall in 2016. This year Maverick has been chartered by Michael Firmin, who raced on the DSS foil equipped flyer at the 2017 Rolex Fastnet and 2019 Rolex Sydney Hobart (third in class).

In contrast to Firmin, Chris Sherlock is no stranger to the Rolex Middle Sea Race, having first competed back in 1997 onboard Mike Slade's IOR maxi, Longobarda. Sherlock has competed four times since as the skipper of Leopard of London in 2002, and Leopard 3 in 2009, 2010 and 2017.

For 2022, Leopard is under new ownership, as Sherlock explains: "We have a new owner who is currently building his familiarity with the boat. He is young, likes to helm, and is keen to go offshore. We did the RORC Caribbean 600 as a taster and that went well. The Rolex Middle Sea Race is the next challenge."

"It is one of my favourite races," concludes Sherlock. "This year we have got a great crew, with a lot of Ocean Race experience, but also experience on Leopard: Mitch Booth, Ian Budgen, Jan Dekker, Juanpa Marcos, and Will Best as navigator.

Is the ProSailing Tour the future for multihull racing?
The fifty foot trimarans of the ProSailing tour have proved themselves to be nimble and potent performers inshore and offshore. Small enough to be sailed single handed or by a crew of five, yet big enough to be a handful. The fleet has plenty of accomplished sailors, among them Sam Goodchild who skippers Leyton. Matt Sheahan caught up with him to find out more about this class and a circuit that is on the rise as the fleet arrived in Cowes at the end of an offshore leg from Brittany.

Mapping the Seabed

Mapping the Seabed We know less about the ocean floor than we do about the surface of the moon and Mars. But by the end of the decade we may know the general outline of our undersea contours and crevasses, thanks to an international project called Seabed 2030. The mapping initiative - formally known as The Nippon Foundation-General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans Seabed 2030 Project - launched in 2017 to "produce the definitive map of the world ocean floor by 2030."

In June 2022, NOAA Administrator Rick Spinrad signed a memorandum of understanding in conjunction with the United Nations Ocean Conference that formalizes U.S. participation in Seabed 2030. The memorandum also describes best practices and protocols for this type of data collection, which will help build positive collaboration between all involved countries and partners.

Seabed data is foundational for determining how the ocean works. Beyond navigation, the shape of the ocean floor plays a big role in the movement of ocean debris and pollution on its surfaces and currents. Knowledge about the depths can provide insights into sustainable fisheries management. Ocean acidification is also directly linked to depth; some areas may experience more chemical change and be less able to sustain healthy ecosystems than others.

Climate change impacts can also vary widely depending on depth since deeper areas may experience different temperature fluctuations than shallow areas. Identifying and monitoring underwater volcanoes also helps scientists predict tsunamis more effectively, potentially helping to save lives across huge swaths of coastline around the world.

Vonny could always cook up a few one-liners
Paul von Zalinski' It was a measure of Paul von Zalinski's abilities as a sailor - and shortcomings as a chef - that Peter Blake signed him up for his crew on board Lion New Zealand for the 1985/86 Whitbread Round the World Race as long as he didn't cook.

Von Zalinski, or Vonny to his mates, had been around the world with Blake previously on Blake's first campaign as skipper on Ceramco New Zealand in 1981/82, when Vonny was enlisted as cook.

It was the days when a chef, complete with fresh meat and vegetables, was included in teams and Blake summed up von Zalinski's abilities in his 1982 book Blake's Odyssey.

Von Zalinski is being remembered as a generous, often larger-than-life figure who loved the ocean and sailing with his mates after he passed away last week aged 79.

Simon Gundry met von Zalinski when they teamed up on Ceramco and developed a close friendship. Banter was a constant companion along with mutual respect.

"He was hardly a cook at times, let alone a chef," Gundry laughed. "But he was a magnificent guy to have at sea because he was a big, tough bastard. He could turn his hand to anything. He was a very good crewmate, good helmsman, but also very funny.

"A week out from Cape Town [on the first leg of the race], I said, 'hey Von, this food is crap', and he looked at me and said, 'if you don't like it, brother, go somewhere else tomorrow night'. He always had a good answer."

Von Zalinski was a constant figure at the mast party held each year on September 21 to mark the anniversary of Ceramco dismasting in lumpy seas on their way to Cape Town.

Gundry said von Zalinski would always be there with a big bottle of Coke, already mixed with a large helping of rum, and a collection of good stories to tell.

Some of them stemmed from the numerous deliveries he did, often to and from Hawaii for the Clipper Cup, or his involvement as a surf lifesaver at Piha beach, where his ashes will be spread.

There would invariably be a heavy dose of self-deprecation or friendly barbs aimed at friends and plenty directed in return about his 'cooking'.
