Phoenix Lay To Rest Ghosts Of Regattas Past With Comfortable Puerto Portals Regatta Title Win
The Plattner family’s South African flagged Phoenix laid to rest the ghosts of November past when they today clinched the third regatta title of the 2022 52 Super Series season, the Puerto Portals 52 Super Series Sailing Week, which finished in perfect 17-20kts NE’ly offshore breezes.

After going on the water carrying a two points lead over the 52 Super Series 2021 circuit title holders Sled, Phoenix completed their first regatta win with two assured second places to win by 12 points, the biggest winning margin of the 2022 season yet.

And with Quantum Racing returning a fourth place, 19 points behind the winners - two shy of the Mallorca podium - Phoenix now top the circuit season standings by two points as the fleet now head to Scarlino, Tuscany in September.

Theirs is a popular, some might say overdue title triumph. In November at the world championships they led the penultimate race and were on course for the world title and a potential late tilt at the 2021 overall when their spinnaker blew up spectacularly on the last run.

The circuit now moves to Scarlino, Italy for the fourth regatta September 26th - October 1st

Putting performance first - Mainfurl
Mainfurl Modern in-mast and in-boom furlings systems really can allow you to enjoy the right sail shapes... (but not all of them!)

Mainfurl is the brainchild of Steen Kjolhede and his stepson Peter Westfal from Denmark. Steen is an ex-Olympic Finn sailor who has a lifetime of experience working on or around boats as a sailor, naval architect, sailmaker and sparmaker, whilst Peter also has more than 20 years’ experience as a sailmaker working for Elvstrøm and North. Together they have set out to revolutionise the furling boom industry with a focus on making safe, reliable and elegant furling booms that are also available for smaller yachts.

They founded the company in 2019 along with two other partners, CEO Claus Hulegaard who manages production and strategist Carsten Mikkelsen who is head of the board. Together they first targeted boats in the 40ft to 60ft size range, quickly building links with the world’s major spar-makers whose products are typically aimed at the 55-foot-plus market segment. They now have eight boom moulds, which enables them to select a mould that is ideally sized for boats ranging from 35ft all the way up to 90ft.

Cereste Wins 20th British Classic Week
Photo by Chris Brown. Click on image for photo gallery.

British Classic Week This year’s British Classic Week, hosted by British Classic Yacht Club in Cowes, was won by Robert Clarke designed Bermudan sloop Cereste.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, British Classic Week attracted 50 classic sailing and motor yachts for a week of sailing, cruising, and socialising in the Solent. Yachts ranged from 19.6m Spirit 65 modern classic Chloe Giselle down to the smallest yacht in the fleet, a 7.7m folkboat named Folkdance sailed by a double-handed crew.

Class 1 was won by Sean McMillan in his Spirit 52 Flight of Ufford, only 1 point ahead of Christian Oldendorff’s Happy Forever. Equally competitive was Class 2, which was narrowly won by Louise Morton in her Andre Mauric sloop Lak II. With four wins in class to her name, Stiletto triumphed in Class 3.

One of the smallest yachts in the fleet, Stella Timoa, won both the Spirit Yachts Nab Tower and the Classic Boat Long Inshore races.

Hot off the heels of the Fife Regatta in Scotland, the beautiful gaff cutter Viola returned to British Classic Week from her home in France to win the Je Ne Sais Quoi trophy overall.

American David Linger is the 51st entry in the Global Solo Challenge 2023/2024
David Linger David Linger from Seattle is the 4th American to sign up for the Global Solo Challenge, the 11th Class40/Open40 in the fleet, which is proving to be a popular choice of boat in the event. David had been in touch with the organisers for some time and recently took the big leap to buy “Koloa Maoli”, an Owen Clarke Design Class40 built by Jazz Marine formerly known as “Bolands Mills”.

Inspired by his sailing heroes and by his lifelong dream of a solo circumnavigation the right time and planets alignment has come for David to be able to undertake this great adventure. The number of entries keeps growing and there’s still a few that may enter and as one of the participants recently put it, even if just half of the entries made it to the start the GSC would be a tremendous success. We are very please to have hit the nail with the format and spirit for this event and hope to grow it organically and sustainably over the years.

Marstrand belongs to the U.S.
The M32 fleet gathered in Marstrand over the weekend for the 3rd event in the European Series and were joined by teams from the U.S. Reigning World Champions, team Convexity, having had a break since winning the Miami Winter Series showed they still got what it takes and aced the regatta with winning 5 of the 9 races.

New team constellation in China One Ningbo with skipper PJ Postma was seen in the lead several times and will be a team to look out for in the future. Same goes for Dutch team Leeloo with skipper Harold Vermeulen who has consistently increased the performance throughout the season.

Marstrand did not deliver the typical Swedish July weather. The first day brought shifty winds and a pulsating current giving the tacticians quite a challenge with many passing lanes. Saturday the breeze never quite filled in but Sunday showed a westerly slowly increasing to well over 20 knots giving the fleet some proper Marstrand fjord sea-state to handle.

Next stop is the European Championship in Riva del Garda where the fleet will be joined by another three American teams. Lake Garda is one of the favourites for the M32 class and has been frequently visited in the past and will be in the future. The Europeans is also the last event before the major happening of the year, the World Championship in Cascais in October.

Junior Offshore Group (JOG) and Henri Lloyd partnership drives youth participation up
Since the partnership between offshore yacht racing club, Junior Offshore Group (JOG), and Henri Lloyd kicked off last year, youth membership has increased by 72% and now comprises 25% of the entire membership base.

Henri Lloyd have become valuable supporters of JOG’s youth programme, Generation JOG. With the cost of kit being one of the major obstacles to youth entry and retention in offshore yacht racing, Henri Lloyd have donated multiple sets of performance racing shells to Gen-JOG Members upon them achieving sailing milestones or targets in the past 12 months.

The success of the partnership has meant both parties have agreed to renew their partnership for at least another 18 months with the focus on scaling the positive impact even further.

Commenting on the importance of this partnership renewal, Race Captain, Stuart Lawrence said, “Partnerships are crucial in scaling positive impact. What we have with Henri Lloyd is a true testament to that. They have helped us enormously in driving youth engagement up and enabling the younger members to overcome some obstacles that have previously been considered fairly insurmountable. We really look forward to the coming months ahead and excited to see the partnership continue.”

Ross Partridge, Partnership Manager states: “Helping to grow true grass-root youth sailing within JOG has been great. These young sailors are achieving new milestones in their racing careers and we are proud to support this. We are also pleased to be partnering with many other yachts, skippers and crews of the JOG fleet.”

Raceboats Only 2002 60' Canting Keel Mini Maxi 'Wild Joe'. 440 000 EUR. Located in Croatia.

In 2018 WILD JOE underwent a complete refit, including the installation of a DSS foil. The DSS foil, coupled with a completely new sail inventory from Doyle Sails, supervised and developed by Stu Bannatyne, has meant that the performance of the yacht has been increased as much as 40%. Speed increases of 6 knots in moderate wind strengths are not uncommon and the thrill factor for the owner and crew is at a completely different level.
