Tuesday Shoot Out In New Offshore Wind Regime Will Decide Puerto Portals Title

WHAT After eight races have been sailed in light to moderate sea breeze conditions Phoenix carry a two points margin over second placed Sled into Tuesday, the last day of racing. But with a brisk Mistral northerly breeze due to spread across the Mediterranean from the north the finale looks set to be battled out in a shifty, puffy difficult offshore wind which present a whole new challenge for the fleet.

South African Phoenix, which has Tom Slingsby calling tactics supported by Cameron Dunn, and Sled which unites Francesco Bruni and six times America's Cup winner Murray Jones in their afterguard, have built a ten points cushion over the third placed Quantum Racing.

The welcome change of wind regime will see the race fleet head out for an earlier start, around 1100hrs, as the race committee seek to catch the best of the N'ly wind before it is diminished by the sea breeze.

Phoenix booked their position as final day title favourites with an excellent 1,2 scoreline today, out-sailing their American flagged rivals Sled in the second race to effectively double their margin. Sled, the current 52 SUPER SERIES overall champions made their worst score of the regtta, fifth, in the first race and actually led Phoenix in the second race.

The title decider is finely balanced. After a modest start to their 2022 season, sixth in Baiona and fifth two points behind Phoenix at last month's Rolex TP52 World Championship Sled are fired up and have the confidence of having won here last August. That was the launch pad to them then closing out the double - the world and the circuit titles - on the Bay of Palma in November. The Plattner family's Phoenix have been knocking on the door at nearly every regatta but have yet to win a regatta title.

Ergin Imre's Provezza won the first race today to move up to fifth.

Standings after Day 4, eight races sailed
1 Phoenix (RSA), Hasso & Tina Plattner, 21 points
2 Sled (USA), Takashi Okura, 23
3 Quantum Racing (USA), Doug DeVos, 33
4 Interlodge (USA), Austin & Gwen Fragomen, 35
5 Provezza (TUR), Ergin Imre, 38
6 Platoon (GER), Harm Muller-Spreer, 39
7 Alegre (GBR), Andy Soriano, 48
8 Gladiator (GBR), Tony Langley, 60
9 Vayu (THAI), Familia Whitcraft, 61

A True Blue Ocean Adventure
Antigua Bermuda Race After a three-year Covid hiatus, the fourth edition of the Antigua Bermuda Race will start from Antigua May 9th 2023. The 935nm oceanic race is managed by the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club in association with Antigua Sailing Week, and supported by the Bermuda Tourism Authority and Goslings Rum. The race is designed to suit a wide range of yachts and crew, with memorable parties both in Antigua and Bermuda.

After leaving Antigua the fleet pass Barbuda and will be out of sight of land until the finish in Bermuda. The race is an experience of about 1,000 miles of tropical Atlantic sailing - a true blue ocean adventure. Sailing in the deep, competitors will experience reaching conditions in warm oceanic swell and a magical night sky.

The 935nm oceanic offshore race is open to IRC and CSA Racing Yachts, Cruiser Racers, Super Yachts, and Multihulls. Classic yachts and double-handed teams have their own category, and a secondary motor sailing handicap in the CSA Classes, allows yachts to use their engines and still get a result, subject to a time penalty. The Antigua Bermuda Race is governed by CAT 1 World Sailing Offshore Safety Requirements, with additional requirements for offshore communications.

The Antigua Bermuda Race is timed to coincide with the end of Antigua Sailing Week, when many yachts are planning to sail north back to North America or east from Bermuda across the Atlantic Ocean. The origin of the modern Antigua Bermuda Race is as a feeder race for the 2017 America's Cup, however the course from Antigua to Bermuda is a long established route for oceanic yachts.

The 2023 Notice of Race will be published shortly. The 2020 NoR and 2019 SI's remain posted for reference. The online survey of interest is now open. Whole Boat Race charters with an owner's rep should be available, as well as Head Boats offering individual crew places on a competing boat - a great way to experience the event and meet new people.

A Tale of two Mackinac Races: Bayview and Chicago
Mackinac Island, Michigan, USA: two largest freshwater races in the US have been held in succession within the last 10 days and provide a study in contrasting offshore racing challenge.

The Bayview to Mackinac and Chicago to Mackinac races are both approximately the same length and end at the same finish line, but are raced from different starts and traverse courses on two different Great Lakes, Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. Both also have many entries who choose to race both races, a total commitment of 1200 miles in racing and deliveries in the month of July. It's no wonder these races dominate the big boat racing scene in the US Midwest.

Both hosting clubs - the Chicago and the Bayview Yacht Clubs - cooperate by switching who runs first before the other. This year its Bayview's turn, and it's the 98th edition of this race first sailed in 1925 - which means it's been running continuously every year despite world wars and pandemics. BYC is located on the Detroit River in Detroit, 60 miles south of the race start in Port Huron.

This race is different than Chicago's in having two course options: the 290-mile Cove Island Course which has the boats ORC rated faster than 0.9900 TCC racing from the start at the south end of Lake Huron to a mark positioned in the northeast corner of the Canadian coast of the lake before turning due west to the finish at Mackinac Island. This race tends to be either downwind to Cove Island then a headsail fetch to the finish, or a reach to Cove Island followed by a long beat to the finish.

At press time the finishers have been arriving already in the 289-mile Chicago to Mackinac Race, which started on Friday 22 July for 33 entries in the Cruising Division and Saturday 23 July for the remaining entries. This year's 240 entries have been split into several divisions and classes (locally they call these "sections"). With a fleet this large race managers can form several classes of one-designs who race in an agreed trim on the same ORC rating to be scored in class results and with each having an ORC certificate they can be scored for overall results as well.

And unlike the BYC race where both ORC Club and ORC International certificates are acceptable, in the Chicago race those boats with ORC GPH ratings faster than 515 sec/mile must have a measured ORCi certificate (for reference a Farr 40 in one-design trim has an ORC GPH rating of 527 sec/mile). -- Dobbs Davis

Newport Harbor Rules at Global Team Race Regatta
Newport, R.I. USA: You could be forgiven for thinking that Newport Harbor Yacht Club was the home team at the 2022 Global Team Race Regatta. There's the name, for starters. 55th Governor's Cup
Newport Beach, California, USA: In Tour de France cycling, the winner of each stage wears a yellow jersey. No such identification will be necessary for Jeffrey Petersen (USA), the 2021 GovCup champion from host Balboa Yacht Club, who, as of last week, is the youth match racing World Champion. "I've always preferred to be the 'underdog' going into a regatta. I guess that will be more difficult this year!" said Petersen.

Last year's 10th place Governor's Cup finisher, Marius Westerlind (SWE), obviously learned a lot over the past year as he finished second to Petersen in the Youth Match Racing Worlds completed Saturday in Pornichet, France. Westerlind is a three-time Swedish Youth MR Champion. At last year's GovCup, observers noted that, while his starts were generally good, Westerlind and his team struggled with boat speed in the Governor's Cup 22 sloops that BYC provides to each team. Given his performance in France, that is unlikely to be a problem this year.

Petersen and Westerlind will face plenty of competition in this year's fleet.

Teams from Australia return in force after COVID-affected years. Australia will send two teams from New South Wales and one from Western Australia. For decades the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia in Sydney has sent teams to the Governor's Cup and have won numerous times— including Harry Price's two wins in 2015 and 2018. This year the club has three well-qualified skippers. GovCup veteran Finn Tapper will crew for his younger brother Cole, and Will Sargent will steer for a different CYCA team. The three sailed in the Worlds with Finn steering. Can Cole outdo his brother in the Governor's Cup, or will Sargent, the first competitor from the Australian state of Tasmania, be the new star?

Live racing coverage airs Friday and Saturday at 11:30 PDT / 18:30 UTC. Friday evening a press conference with the four semi-finals skippers will air at 18:30 PDT / 01:30+1 UTC. The final press conference and awards ceremony will also be covered live at 16:45 PDT / 23:45 UTC. All the foregoing will be live-streamed, and available for later viewing on demand, on both the Balboa Yacht Club YouTube channel as well as the Governor's Cup Facebook page.

The Ocean Race: New Signings
The 11th Hour Racing Team (USA) and Team Malizia (GER) IMOCA teams have both announced significant new additions to their sailing team lineups for The Ocean Race 2022-23.

The American syndicate 11th Hour Racing Team, skippered by Charlie Enright, has recruited the Australian-born yachtsman Jack Bouttell - a highly accomplished ocean racer and past winner of The Ocean Race.

Bouttell - who is based in Lorient, France - won the 2017-18 edition of The Ocean Race with Dongfeng Race Team and has since established an enviable reputation as a true ocean racing all-rounder capable of expertly filling any role offshore.

Meanwhile, Boris Herrmann's Team Malizia has brought on renowned French sailor Nicolas Lunven to race aboard the team's brand new boat, Malizia-Seaexplorer, which was launched in France this week. Lunven first made his name as a solo sailor, winning the prestigious Solitaire du Figaro trophy in 2009 at the age of 26, and again in 2017, as well as finishing on the podium in 2012 and 2016.

His first edition of The Ocean Race was in 2014-15 when he sailed with the Spanish MAPFRE team. In the last edition he raced as navigator aboard the VO65 Turn the Tide on Plastic and has since found himself much in demand among professional ocean racing teams.

Lunven Team Malizia crewmates for The Ocean Race 2022-23 include Boris Herrmann (GER), Will Harris (GBR), Rosalin Kuiper (NED) as well as OBR Antoine Auriol (FRA).
