WHAT With two days of racing still to sail, winners last year Sled have taken control of Puerto Portals 52 SUPER SERIES Sailing Week but only by a couple of points. The US flagged team which are the reigning 52 SUPER SERIES champions finished third in the first race today and then won the second contest by the tiniest of margins, just one second as they pipped 2022 circuit leaders Quantum Racing on the finish line.

After six races of the ten scheduled for this, the third regatta of the five event 2022 52 SUPER SERIES season, Sled have still not finished worse than fourth. Today their four points aggregate was only matched by the resurgent Quantum Racing who went 2-2 for the day, clearly back on form after a very modest opening to this event.

Since accumulating 21 points over the first three races Quantum have now sailed three consecutive second places and only missed out on their first win of this week when they were wrong-footed in the dying minutes of the second contest in what Sled's Don Cowie called an 'old school match racing move'.

The Plattner family team Phoenix atoned for an eighth in Race 4 when they ran out winners of Race 5, holding off the attacking Quantum Racing at the finish line. Phoenix could not match the precision and speed of Quantum Racing's perfect pin end start in the second race and while Terry Hutchinson drove Quantum Racing to a substantial early lead, able to cross the fleet to round the top mark with nearly 80 metres in hand, Phoenix could only get round in seventh. That they pulled back to fourth means it is the South African team steered by Tony Norris which is, again, Sled's biggest threat.

Standings after six races
1. Sled (USA), Takashi Okura, 2,2,4,4,3,1 16 pts
2. Phoenix (RSA), Hasso & Tina Plattner, 1,3,1,8,1,4 18 pts
3. INTERLODGE (USA), Austin & Gwen Fragomen, 4,1,3,3,9,3 23 pts
4. Quantum Racing (USA), Doug DeVos 8,6,7,2,2,2 27 pts
5. Platoon (GER), Harm Müller Spreer 5,4,8,1,5,7 30 pts
6. Provezza (TUR), Ergin Imre, 3,8,5,5,4,5 30 pts
7. Alegre (GBR), Andy Soriano, 6,7,2,7,7,8 37 pts
8. Gladiator (GBR), Tony Langley, 7,5,6,9,6,9 42 pts
9. Vayu (THAI), Family Whitcraft, 9,9,9,6,8,6 47pts

Roschier Baltic Sea Race
Line Honours for the Roschier Baltic Sea Race is expected to be decided today after four days and three nights of intense racing for the front runners. Under the IRC Rating Rule a large variety of boats are emerging as contenders for the overall win. Conditions in the Baltic Sea are ever changing, adding to the thrill of the 635-mile race organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club together with the Ocean Racing Alliance.

At 1000 local time on 24 July, Ambersail 2 had taken the lead on the water and was 42 miles from the finish of the Roschier Baltic Sea Race. GP Bullhound was a mile astern and I Love Poland two miles from pole position. Tilmar Hansen's German TP52 Outsider was coming in hot and is only four miles behind the leaders. Outsider by name and nature, the German team should not be discounted for the battle for Line Honours in the Roschier Baltic Sea Race.

SailGP 'Indefinitely Pauses' Japanese Team's Participation in Season 3
SailGP organisers made the surprise announcement on Friday 15 July that they were pausing the participation of Japan SailGP Team "indefinitely".

According to Sail-World, the move was prompted by a shortage of boats, with only nine vessels ready to sail for the 10 confirmed teams in Season 3. A tenth is under construction but was not expected to be available until after Season 3's third event in Portsmouth later this month.

It's understood that SailGP Japan, skippered by Nathan Outteridge, was believed to be the team with the least sponsorship among those without a full franchise, despite their second-place finish in Season 2. Organisers cited "logistical and commercial considerations" in their decision.

SailGP's statement added: "The league would like to thank Nathan Outteridge and all of the athletes and staff involved in the Team for their outstanding performance in the first two seasons of SailGP and wish them all the very best for the future.

"Season 3 will continue with nine teams racing for the remainder of the season."

The current season kicked off in Bermuda on 14-15 May, with Chicago hosting the second state on 18-19 June. Australia, skippered by Tom Slingsby, has won both events thus far - with Great Britain (Sir Ben Ainslie) and Canada (Phil Robertson) trading the other podium positions.

Melges 24 European Sailing Series 2022 Event 4
Riva del Garda, Italy -The fourth event of the 2022 Melges 24 European Sailing Series, and Act 3 of the Italian Melges 24 Tour 2022, organized by the Fraglia Vela Riva, finished with a great day of Peler: the last two races, held under some strong northerly breeze, were by far the best of the series and put big smiles on the sailors' faces.

By winning both today races, Andrea Racchelli's Altea (ITA; 1-1) was able to jump on the third spot of the podium, six points behind from Richard Thompson's Black Seal (GBR; 4-3) helmed by an enthusiastic Stefano Cherin, being second on the podium and grateful to the owner.

The overall victory belongs to Michele Paoletti's Strambapapa (ITA; 12-5), again on the top of the podium after the success grabbed in Rovinj, at the seasonal opening of the series. Sailing with his wife Giovanna Micol, former Italian Olympian Paoletti had an easy time taking command of operations on the water and defending the leading position since the end of day one.

The final day was also good for Paolo Brescia's Melgina (ITA; 5-2), that climbed the ranking up to the fourth position, right into front of Peter Karrie's Nefeli (GER; 8-14), rounding up the top five.

The Spirit of Conor O'Brien's Pioneering Saoirse is Afloat Again in West Cork

Saoirse The 42ft world-girdling Saoirse is re-born at Oldcourt near Baltimore a Century after the original little ship first took to the seas in West Cork

Down in West Cork, they have a way of quietly getting on with things until a major waypoint is inevitably passed in the project, and then we're into new territory. For two or three years now, Liam Hegarty and his team of master shipwrights at Oldcourt Boatyard on the River Ilen have been engaged in constructing a re-creation of the 42ft Baltimore-built Saoirse. Aboard her, Conor O'Brien (1880-1952) of Foynes Island in the Shannon Estuary sailed round the world with several crew south of the great Capes and back to Ireland in exactly two years, between June 20th 1923, and June 20th 1925.

This means that Saoirse was being completed, commissioned and trial-sailed during the Civil War. While we don't precisely know her launching date, it's a fact that in August 1922 she was carrying passengers and mail out of West Cork, as the area's road and rail communications had been cut off in the ongoing conflict.

It's a side-story to an already extraordinary saga, and in retrospect it seems inevitable that the Centenary would be greeted with the appearance of a Saoirse replica, for the original - or most of her - was lost in a hurricane in Jamaica in 1979. But while virtually all of the fabric of the first Saoirse was gone, Gary Mac Mahon of the Ilen Project in Limerick has a very comprehensive archive of Saoirse data and drawings, including a set of hull lines take off by Uffa Fox in Cowes in 1927.

Bosham Sailing Club Finn Festival 2022
A three-day celebration of seventy years of sailing Finns at Bosham took place over the 15th-17th July. It was also an opportunity to mark seventy years since the Finn first sailed in the Olympics in Helsinki. Bosham SC has a fleet of eleven boats and is hoping to have more soon. Some have called Bosham SC the ancestral home of UK Finn sailing as the fleet started there soon after the design was finalised in 1949.

Twenty-six boats had entered but COVID took its toll and 23 actually competed over two days with three races per day. The event had a retro feel, not only because it was the 70th anniversary for the Finn fleet as an international class, but also within the fleet there were three wooden-hulled 1950's and 60's classics, sailing with wooden and aluminium masts and Dacron sails. Moreover, adding spice to the sailing, the courses set were around Chichester harbour using the local racing marks, several of which date from this early period in dinghy racing.

All competitors received a commemorative hoodie and several product prizes from Force 4, Musto, Harken, Kingfisher ropes, Allen Brothers and Sandiline. Winner of The Bosham Plate as overall top boat was Mathew Walker, who also received a 25% discount off a new North sail. Winner of the Amoeba Trophy for overall fastest Classic (and fourth overall) was Martin Hughes, who also received a pair of new Musto Hiking Pants. Dan Belton took overall second place and Cameron Tweedle took third. All these winners also won traditional Bosham Sailing Club glassware.

5,000 boats dismantled
The Association for Eco-Responsible Pleasure Craft - APER - has dismantled more than 5,000 since it was set up three years' ago.

The figures released by the French organisation, which is financed by boat builders, approved dismantling centres, administrations, local authorities and marinas, show 33% of the boats were motorboats, around 32% were small sport sailboats - both monohulls and multihulls and just over 29% were monohull sailboats.

The figures include the dismantling of more than 1,100 boats that have been collected from sailing clubs since a partnership was signed with the French Sailing Federation in 2020, with APER undertaking to finance the transport and processing of old school boats.

"The wrecks, dilapidated hulls and scattered sucker boats on our banks and shores, our gardens, our marinas, are not inevitable," said Jean-Paul Chapeleau président de l'APER.

"Get rid of, deconstruct, recycle and recovering pleasure boats at the end of their life, this is the mission that APER has set itself, under the impetus of the Federation of nautical industries."

The organisation works to help boatbuilders and owners from the concept and design including choice of materials through to production and then the end of life of the boat.

The organisation covers boats from 2.5m to 24m that are registered in France. There are 26 dismantling centres across the country.
