Penultimate Day at J/24 World Championship
Corpus Christi, Texas USA: Four points separate the top four boats heading into the final day of the J/24 World Championship hosted by Corpus Christi Yacht Club in Texas USA. Paul Foerster's Grand Slam 2 remains atop the leaderboard with 21 points, after posting a 4,7 on Thursday. Mike Marshall's American Garage and Nobuyuki Imai's Siesta are tied at 24 points for second and third, respectively. John Mollicone's New England Ropes is only one point further back with 25 points. Foerster also leads the 27-boat Corinthian division, ahead of Imai's Siesta and James Freedman's LOL.

Race 7 started on time with legs of 1.5 nautical miles. Wind speeds were 19-22 knots with peak gusts in the high twenties. Notable BFDs were Marshall's American Garage, Keith Whittemore's Furio and Travis Odenbach's Bogus. Race 8 was also course four at a distance of 1.5 nautical miles. The Black Flag start was all clear. Wind speeds averaged 22 knots with a top gust of 33.

Imai's Siesta gained their first victory of the Championship to kick off the day, while William Fastiggi's Fawn Liebowitz stayed on a hot streak in second and Mollicone's New England Ropes placed third. Odenbach's Bogus rebounded in Thursday's second race, as did Marshall's American Garage. Mollicone repeated a third in this contest as well.

Racing concludes Friday with two scheduled races. Thirty-eight boats are representing Argentina, Chile, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Sweden, Trinidad and the United States.

Roschier Baltic Sea Race
Helsinki: The inaugural Roschier Baltic Sea Race started on time outside the historic Port City of Helsinki Finland. Twenty seven boats with over 213 sailors from 18 different nations started the first chapter of the 635-nautical mile race in the Baltic Sea, organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club together with the Ocean Racing Alliance.

Helsinki is north of the 60th Parallel and in July sunlight is virtually continuous, so the early evening start was witnessed by an armada of orderly spectator boats, with Helsinkians basking in the warm sunshine and a light southerly breeze. The Roschier Baltic Sea Race is a marathon not a sprint, but all three IRC starts were extremely competitive. In the big boat IRC Zero Class, TP52 Outsider respectfully took penalty turns within minutes of the start after a port-starboard incident with Ambersail 2. The breeze filled in as the international fleet made their way past the Helsinki Lighthouse, 12 miles into the 635-mile race.

Three hours after the start, leading the race for Line Honours was VO65 Ambersail 2, with American skipper Clarke Murphy at the helm, just ahead of Volvo 70 I Love Poland, skippered by Grzegorz Baranowski. Tilmar Hansen's German TP52 Outsider was third on the water. The early tactical decision was whether to hug the coast of Suomenlinna Island or stay nearer the rhumb line to Helsinki Island. Outsider chose the latter, while the three canting keelers went inshore. Ambersail 2 was visibly lifted inshore and looked to make an early gain.

The Roschier Baltic Sea Race looks set for a complex weather scenario in the coming days. The dock talk before the start had a recurring theme. A crucial part of the entire race was making good speed to the Almagrundet Lighthouse outside the Stockholm archipelago. Good wind speed is expected to last until the afternoon of day two. After that, boats may see the wind dissipate giving a big change to the end game.

Stella Timoa Wins The Long Inshore On Day Five At British Classic Week
Ladies day on Wednesday. Photo by Ingrid Abery, www.ingridabery.com. Click on image for photo gallery.

British Classic Week Day five of British Classic Week saw Stella Timoa win the Long Inshore Race sponsored by Classic Boat magazine. This was Timoa's second passage race win of the week following the Nab Tower Race victory on day two.

With 5-6 knots from the south east, the fleet started on the combined line to the east with the tide. Spinnakers were hoisted as the yachts crossed the line and meandered down to Royal Yacht Squadron.

As the first yachts in the fleet approached Royal Yacht Squadron to round the mark to starboard, spinnakers were dropped for the reach across to Kemps Quay. As the leg began, the wind shifted and the reach became a beat, with much of the fleet becalmed in a wind hole in the middle of the Solent.

The tide slowly took the yachts down onto Kemps Quay, which they rounded to starboard. The wind filled in from the east as the fleet reached across the tide to the north shore and went upwind in 8-9 knots, creeping up the shore out of the oncoming tide.

Rounding Howden Fastnet to port, the fleet reached back across the Solent in the declining breeze where the Royal Yacht Squadron committee boat was waiting at Contessa 32 to finish the feet on a shortened the course.

Andrew Gilmour, owner of yacht Timoa, commented, "It was an intense race, we had to watch the wind all the time as it was constantly flicking around, with the yachts all bunched together and looking for clean air. It was a great challenging race, and you couldn't rest for a minute."

Spirit 37 Strega won Class 1, Whooper won Class 2, Fife gaff cutter Viola won Class 3, and Stella Timoa took first in Class 4.

Crews were rewarded at the end of the race with Hattiers Rum cocktails and Dartmouth Gin and tonics dropped to their yachts as they made their way back into Cowes.

Three Peaks Yacht Race and Challenge
This year's Three Peaks Yacht Race showed, once again, why it has endured since 1977 as one of the world's great adventure races.

The 44th race was won on handicap by a skipper and boat combination which first won in 1999, while the Challenge event was successfully completed by two school teams for the first time, with 16 and 17 year old pupils taking part. The 44th race was one for the record books.

The first race boat to arrive in Corpach was the J111 of team 'Roaring Forties' who at one point after leaving Whitehaven had a 35 mile lead. Most of that was lost at the Mull of Kintyre, where precious hours were spent circling in the tidal eddies. The Three Peaks Yacht Race is always an emotional rollercoaster, the highs and lows often coinciding with the 9 tidal gates on the course.

Roaring Forties took line honours and the Daily Telegraph Cup, but knew the race win had slipped from their grasp. Skipper Cris Miles commented, "This was a race where we really had to grind it out."

Behind them and finishing quickly were two previous race winning skippers, in two previous race winning boats.

Osprey Meadows (X99) and Wild Spirit (Reflex 38) had been close racing for the last 75nm of the course, in sight of each other all the way from the Mull of Kintyre.

Wild Spirit, skippered by Paul Jackson, had the advantage of the fastest runners on their team. Matt Knowles and Edward Cordon are both GB and N. Ireland international mountain runners, and they comfortably set the fastest time of 14 hours 42 minutes for all the mountain stages to win the title of 'Kings of the Mountains'.

ISORA and SCORA to Discuss Timing of Future K2Q Offshore Race
Kinsale Yacht Club's second offshore race of the season indicates a south coast demand for this type of racing. Still, the absence of any Cork boats on July's K2Q 260 race course means organisers look set to alter the timing of future editions of the Dun Laoghaire to Cork Race.

The gun for Kinsale's next race will fire on August 19th for an All-In race around the Fastnet Rock. It's another offshore fixture that ISORA chief Peter Ryan says proves 'there is interest in offshore racing'.

Ryan has been in the vanguard of an offshore revival on the east coast over recent seasons bringing together Dublin and Welsh crews for cross-channel racing and local coastal races.

Ryan, as one of the K2Q race organisers, accepts that the timing of the July 1 K2Q race (with both 160 and 260-mile course options) was too close to June's Round Ireland Race, but he also says it 'went well' for its first staging.

As regular Afloat readers know, the K2Q is a Dun Laoghaire to Cork Race. Its staging was a collaboration between the Munster-based SCORA and the Irish Sea ISORA offshore racing associations.

As previously reported, the K2Q was a replay of the first recorded Irish offshore race of 1860.

Fisher & Paykel: A successful 18 footers return for a familiar name
Click on image for photo gallery.

Fisher & Paykel Over the years, the Australian 18 Footers League has had a number of wonderful relationships with many of its sponsorship supporting companies and their individual owners and representatives, and the recent 2021-22 season produced the latest situation when the Fisher & Paykel company re-commenced an 18ft Skiff sponsorship it previously had for ten years.

This time it also produced a 'unique situation' along with a successful season for the racing team.

During the ten seasons, the name Fisher & Paykel was prominent on Sydney Harbour as a boat sponsor in the Australian 18 Footers League's 18ft Skiff fleet, having first appeared on the sails of Andrew Cuddihy's skiff in the 2005-06 season and remained in the fleet, through a number of different skiffs and teams, until the end of the 2014-15 season.

The highlight came at the 2010 JJ Giltinan world Championship when Trevor Barnabas, as a late replacement for the team's usual skipper, won Race 3 of the regatta and gave the team a good 10th place overall in a very strong 32-boat fleet from five countries.

The Fisher & Paykel name came back into the League's Sydney Harbour fleet again during the 2021-22 season, this time in a skiff skippered by Jordan Girdis.

Girdis originally brought his regular two crew members with him to the new team but suffered a critical setback and had to make late changes just before the season began when both members of his team had to withdraw due to injury and interstate university studies.

It was a critical set-back for Jordan in such a high-pressure fleet but the team's performance was consistently good throughout the season. After finishing 5th in the NSW Championship, the Fisher & Paykel team finished eleven in the nationals then a very good 8th in the 25-strong JJ Giltinan world Championship in March.

Fisher & Paykel, which is a premium appliance brand with a New Zealand origin, has been closely involved with sailing over many years so it's not surprising that it has returned to the 18s. The most memorable involvement being the 1989-90 Whitbread Round the World Race in which the Fisher & Paykel NZ 82' Farr campaign, skippered by Grant Dalton, finished second. -- Frank Quealey Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.
