The fleet is flying in the Aegean 600
Lavrion, Greece - After a beautiful sunny start and a glorious moonlit night of downwind sailing, the fleet in the second edition of the Hellenic Ocean Racing Club's (HORC) Aegean 600 is flying around the race course with the fleet leaders passing the halfway point of the race at the northeast end of Rhodos (Rhodes). The bulk of the fleet in the late afternoon were still on their final downwind approach to round Kassos, where they head up to a port tack reach to cross east then northeast through the lee of Karpathos before heading up further towards Rhodos.

Like last night, the weather forecast is for a slight lightening in the northwest Meltemi for those approaching and rounding Rhodos to start their way due west to Kandeliousa, while it remains at full strength in the straits between Karpathos and Rhodos for the slower members of the fleet. The longer term forecast continues to look favorable for the same pattern of full strength Meltemi to continue in the daylight hours through the end of the week.

The conditions last night could only be described as "champagne sailing": 12-15 knots of wind, 1-2 meter seas and a clear moonlit sky. -- Dobbs Davis

Big Battles in the Female Doublehanders
Amelie Wehrle and Amelie Rinn (GER) held on to the yellow bibs and the overall lead in the Female Two Person Dinghy 420 after a tricky second day on the water at the Allianz Youth World Sailing Championships in The Hague. With the breeze struggling to get above six knots until later in the afternoon, the strong current of Scheveningen played an even bigger role than usual.

The Germans thought they might have slipped off the top spot and been displaced by the Spanish team, Maria Perello and Marta Cardona (ESP). However, as the Spaniards stepped ashore they discovered the dreaded news - a U-Flag disqualification for prematurely starting from the second of today's two races. They had crossed the finish line in second place behind the Croatian crew. Added to their race win from earlier in the session, a 1, 2 would have launched Spain into the lead. With a 1, UFD, they sit two points behind the Germans. Plenty to play for yet.

Female Skiff 29er: France v Argentina

After just two days and six races, the battle for gold in the Female Skiff fleet looks set to be a match race between France and Argentina. Lucie Gout and Fleur Babin (FRA) hold the yellow jerseys just a point in front of Amparo Stupenego and Julia Pantin (ARG). However it could be argued the Argentinians hold the better set of scores because they're discarding a 3rd place compared with a 7th by the French.

There are so many other great stories developing across the 11 events at the Youth Worlds. Riccardo Pianosi (ITA) has overtaken arch rival in the Male Formula Kite, defending champion Max Maeder (SGP). Three back-to-back wins for the brother/sister duo from Spain, Daniel and Nora Garcia de la Casa, who lead the Multihull Mixed Nacra 15 fleet. -- Andy Rice

Yann Penfornis: "Now, The Third Chapter In The History Of Multiplast"
Managed for 28 years by Gilles Ollier then for 13 by Dominique Dubois, legendary French boatbuilders and multi discipline composites specialists Multiplast has just recently changed hands. On Tuesday the takeover of the Carboman group to which the Vannes shipyard belongs was completed by HBH group which is headed by Damien Harlé and Jean-Denis Bargibant. Yann Penfornis, who remains managing director, explains the implications of this takeover.

Can you tell us about the terms of the takeover of the Carboman group?
Well it all started two years ago when Dominique Dubois, the president of the Carboman group, decided to participate in the Ocean Globe Race in 2023. He then prepared his own departure and spoke to employees about the sale of the company. At the beginning of December 2021, he was in contact with Damien Harlé and Jean-Denis Bargibant, the leaders of the HBH group, which has two production sites, including Ouest Composites Industrie, based in Auray. The initial discussions went well and we entered into almost exclusive discussions at the beginning of 2022. Even before the formalization of the takeover, as potential buyers they were involved in our decisions on long-term projects. And they were at our premises two or three times a week. The sale was finally signed on Tuesday. The transition is done in excellent conditions, there is no break in decisions, no loss of time.

So you will still be the Managing Director of Multiplast?
Indeed. Here we are approaching the third chapter in the history of Multiplast, a beautiful new chapter with two good managers younger than me, their plan is for the three of us to work closely together. From our first meeting, Damien Harlé and Jean-Denis Bargibant wanted to make sure that I stayed in the frame. I said yes, provided I could continue to come to the office every morning at 6:30 a.m. wearing a smile. The new buyers are the type of guys I like, there is no reason for it to go wrong. It's important to have their trust. My responsibilities remain the same. I had already been a shareholder for about ten years, my holdings go back just from Multiplast to the group level.

What do you remember from the 13 years spent alongside Dominique Dubois?
Many things. Superb projects like Groupama 4 or Gitana 17 (the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild, editor's note), the VOR 65s, the creation of the Carboman group, the acceleration of our diversification, building new premises, the involvement in very good research projects, the development of a company that has gone from 49 employees when Dominique took over to 110 today...

Salty Dawgs Add Newport, RI Start to the Fall Caribbean Rally
The Salty Dawg Sailing Association has decided to add a start to the fall rally to the Caribbean in Newport, RI in addition to the traditional starting venue in Hampton, VA.

The Newport start will be sailed in conjunction with and with full cooperation of the North Atlantic Rally for Cruisers. The start will be around November 1. While organizationally the two rallies will remain separate entities, they will share docking facilities, meeting and party spaces and other in-Newport events. The NARC always stops in Bermuda and then ends their rally in St. Martin.

The Salty Dawg Rally offers the option of a Bermuda stop for both the Newport and Hampton fleets and expects there to be some shoreside entertainment and activities available. After a brief stop in Bermuda, the Salty Dawg fleet will head south to Antigua where the rally has organized weeks of fun events, parties and dinners. The NARC fleet will head to St. Martin where a dinner and other activities are planned.

Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy
The 107-foot superyacht Green Eyes and the professional sailing team on board the VO65 Racing for the Planet walked away with line honours after two days and closely fought racing in the bay of Cascais.

The annual 2022 Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy, which took place on 9 and 10 July, in Cascais, Portugal, came to a close on Sunday evening after two days of close and intense racing. The festival of sailing was contested in picture-perfect summer conditions by eighty-five boats battling across five classes.

The regatta, which was established by the Mirpuri Foundation in 2020 to create awareness and raise funds for marine conservation, is organised in conjunction with Clube Naval de Cascais.

After a delay to the start of racing on Saturday due to light winds, sailing finally got underway at 1530 local time to cannon fire from the Navio Patrulha Oceânico Sines of the Portuguese Navy.

The competition for the Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy line honours on day one was a tightly contested duel between two giants of the fleet. The 107-foot Wally design Green Eyes, skippered by Paulo Mirpuri, and the 70-foot VO70 Green Dragon with Johannes Schwartz on the helm, fought it out from the start gun to the finish line. After two and half hours of intense racing, the VO70 crossed the finish line just forty seconds ahead of the superyacht to secure the line honours lead overnight.
