Fantastic Finn Masters sailing in Helsinki
The Finn World Masters in Helsinki, Finland was once against blessed with fantastic sailing conditions for the fourth day of competition. Current world champion, Pieter-Jan Postma, from The Netherlands put the Masters title beyond doubt by winning both races on Thursday for a clean slate so far with just one race left to sail on Friday.

Again, a solid wind of 12-18 knots and wall to wall sunshine welcomed the 120 boat fleet for a great day of racing. After the first race was abandoned on the first downwind due to a major wind shift the following two starts went ahead in the building breeze.

It seems whatever Postma does at the start, he is leading at the top and sails away from the fleet. His performance today highlights the difference between a seasoned Olympic campaigner and a bunch of very good sailors. However, they all love the fact that he is here and enjoying being part of the huge Finn family worldwide.

Filipe Silva was the best of the rest on Thursday with a 3,2, though the top three remain unchanged with Laurent Hay leading Peter Peet. The Dutch team also put on a consistent display with Sanders Willems picking up a 2,9, Jan Willem Kok a 5,4 and Karel von Hellemond an 8,8. The Dutch team look set to collect the Nations Cup this week.

The event concludes Friday with one more race scheduled against a forecast of light winds in the morning building to 7-10 knots by the afternoon

Strong international line-up for next week's Lagos GC32 World Championship
Following on from mid-June's GC32 Lagos Cup, the GC32 World Championship, annual highlight of the GC32 Racing Tour and the only official World Sailing-endorsed championship for foiling catamaran 'yachts', will take place over 13-17 July in Lagos, Portugal.

The 10 teams, from afar away as Australia and the USA, comprise the most competitive GC32 fleet ever, including America's Cup winners, challengers and SailGP teams. Among these a favourite is Alinghi Red Bull Racing. Red Bull Sailing Team won the last GC32 World Championship when it was held in September 2021 in Villasimius, Sardinia, while Alinghi won the previous World Championship two years earlier, also in Lagos. However, although Red Bull has come on board with Alinghi to challenge for the 37th America's Cup, Alinghi Red Bull Racing's GC32 crew exclusively comprises members of its AC sailing squad.

Taking place off Lagos over 13-17 July, the GC32 World Championship is supported by the City of Lagos and Tourism Portugal, plus Sopromar, Marina de Lagos and Clube de Vela de Lagos.

Teams:
Alinghi Red Bull Racing (SUI) Skipper: TBC
Argo (USA) Owner: Jason Carroll
Black Star Sailing Team (SUI) Owner: Christian Zuerrer
.film AUS Racing (AUS) Owner-driver: Simon Delzoppo
HRM Racing Team (POL) Owner-driver: Piotr Harasimowicz
K-Challenge Team France (FRA) Skipper: Quentin Delapierre
Team Rockwool Racing (DEN) Skipper: Nicolai Sehested
Team Canada (CAN) Skipper: Graeme Sutherland
Team Tilt (SUI) Skipper: Sébastien Schneiter
Zoulou (FRA) Owner-driver: Erik Maris

2022 is the ninth season of the GC32 Racing Tour. This southern European-centred circuit for one design foiling catamarans, seeks to attract both private owner-driven boats and commercially-backed teams with a race format aimed at providing the best foiling catamaran experience for participants. This remit includes visiting venues where there is the most likelihood of seeing optimum wind conditions for foiling and setting up race courses large enough to enable the GC32s to hit maximum 30+ knot speeds.

Seahorse Sailor Of The Month
This month's nominees:

Fantastic Finn Masters sailing in Helsinki Kenichi Horie (JPN)
It's hard to argue that the largely low-dairy Japanese national diet has its benefits. Kenichi Horie knows his way across the Pacific Ocean having successfully traversed it in a curious range of boat types including one built out of aluminium drinks' cans. He has lost count of all these various voyages but we know his latest was completed at the age of 83 aboard a 'compact' 19-foot sloop. Asked if he had concerns about the trip he laughed... 'maybe a little about being old'

Fantastic Finn Masters sailing in Helsinki Ossie Stewart (GBR)
We have tried before, Ossie, really we have. Still a nipper at 68, the Olympic Soling bronze medallist of 1992 has amassed a huge tally of major national and international titles but always as a crew. Winning the 2022 RS Elite title marked his first ever in the back of the bus. Crewed by his son Tom and renowned one design sailor Geoff Carveth, Stewart took his big win by just 1pt ahead of old friend and rival Russell Peters who was taking time out from his own full-on Cape 31 campaign

Fantastic Finn Masters sailing in Helsinki June's winner:
Sviatoslav Madonich (UKR)
'Of course I am voting for Sviatoslav. Slava Ukraini!' - Ian Williams; 'Ukrainians are the strongest and the bravest. Love for Ukraine' - Vitaliy Kuznyetsov; 'Super! Gloria for Ukraine!' - Oleksandr Blavatnyi; 'The greatest youth sailor Ukraine has ever been blessed with' - Valentyn Klymentyev; 'Sviatoslav is simply brilliant!' - Debbie Smith; 'Slava is young, strong and a straightforward Ukrainian sportsman' - Denys Silchenko.

IC37s at Narragansett Bay
Over the next eight days, IC37s will dominate Narragansett Bay between six race days and two practice days for the Sail Newport Regatta this weekend (July 9-10) and the IC37 Nationals held during Race Week in Newport presented by Rolex hosted by New York Yacht Club (July 13-16). Fourteen teams will compete in the first weekend with then a record 24 boats will be on the line for Nationals starting on Wednesday.

With sunny weather in the forecast for this weekend, the crews will be hoping for the patented Newport seabreeze to fill to give them the ideal racing conditions on Rhode Island Sound. With the 2 of the top 3 teams from the Annual Regatta last month sitting out the Newport Regatta, it will be Terry McLaughlin's Defiant in the favored position. However, do not count out some of the new teams like Peter Wagner's Skeleton Key who started finding their stride towards the end of the Annual Regatta, their first event since making the switch from a successful J/111 program.

Will the teams who sail over the weekend have an edge over the 10 additional teams who join a few days later? Only time will tell but Annual Regatta winner, Chris Lewis' Qubit Texan crew will be back along with the Winter Series winner Steve Liebel's New Wave. All the teams will also have access to the IC37 Coach, Moose McClintock, who will be on the water every day offering tips and help to all the sailors.

The National Championship title is up for grabs as the 2021 winners, Drew Freides & Bill Ruh's Pacific Yankee will not be back but the North American Champions, the Sertl Family with Das Blau Max, will be on both starting lines with their family of four plus friends who make up the crew. With so many different champions from the last few years, it is sure to be anyone's regattas this July.

Wharram Women - Then And Now
The current spate of Bluewater Cruising YouTube vloggers for some reason annoy me. They are usually well tanned, fit young couples on large plastic cruising yachts or catamarans who face the "adversities" of the ocean with Prozac smiles and saccharine cliches. Or perhaps I'm just not as young and beautiful as they are anymore, and I'm trying to rationalise my jealousy.

However, this week I stumbled across a couple of videos of the same genre, but somehow less disingenuous. Six months after the death of James Wharram and almost 70 years since he set sail from Falmouth in a Polynesian inspired 23½ft flat-bottomed double canoe (now called a catamaran) that he had built himself at a cost of £200, his craft still have a low level cult following.

Star Europeans
Strong breeze, sun and a very eager fleet are the ingredients that made Day One of the 2022 Star Europeans a memorable one. The wind was coming from West/North-West at 10 to 15 knots with gusts of 18, making it challenging yet compelling, for the 53-boat fleet to manage their way on the course on both races.

The first race was brilliantly won by the freshly crowned North American Champions Jack Jennings and Pedro Trouche (USA/BRA), they were chased by Piet Eckert and Frederico Melo (SUI/POR), the best of the day, and local skipper Jorgen Shönherr with crew Markus Koy (DEN/GER).

The second race started right on time, about 30 minutes after the end of the first one. The wind was still a bit shifty both in intensity and direction, but not so that it would affect fair racing. The best ones this time were Germans: former Star Class President Hubert Merkelbach with his crew Kilian Weise. They sailed a flawless race that combined with a sixth in the first one have them close the day in second while the overall provisional leaders Eckert/Melo closed race two in third place.

On Friday July 8th the first race is scheduled for 11,30 am (GMT+1) with two races. Same time for both Saturday and Sunday July 10th, but only one race is planned on the last day.

Top 5 After Day 1
1. Piet Eckert / Frederico Melo, 5 points
2. Hubert Merkelbach / Kilian Weise, 7
3. Lars Hendriksen / Jan Eli Gravad, 8
4. Jorgen Shonherr / Markus Koy, 10
5. Jack Jennings / Pedro Trouche, 11

The Last Word
How gullible are you? Is your gullibility located in some "gullibility center" in your brain? Could a neurosurgeon reach in and perform some delicate operation to lower your gullibility, otherwise leaving you alone? If you believe this, you are pretty gullible, and should perhaps consider such an operation. -- Douglas R. Hofstadter
